MAKING YOUR MILES COUNT Robert D. Scheper

Love What You Do Rather Than Do What You Love When I was a young lad I worked as a gas pump jockey. For those who are too young to know what that is… it was before the industry was taken over by the self-serve pumps. I have often thought back to those glorious days because I loved the job! It had little to do with splashing gas on my shoes or making change for a $7.60 fill-up with a customer’s $10.00 bill. I loved to tell jokes except I didn’t know very many good ones and not many people have the time to listen to a joke. However, pumping gas gave me 120 seconds of time to a captive audience… one by one. I could tell the same joke over and over again, all day long and get 65 to 125 one-on-one laughs. It was awesome! I found that focusing on keeping others happy is actually the key to keeping me happy in whatever I’m doing. Being in the service industry doesn’t mean you are required to keep the customer happy but you do GET to keep the customer happy. It is one of life’s greatest calling and maybe even life’s ONLY calling. Serving people; making others happy by easing their load or solving their problem should produce a thrill up everyone’s leg. If it doesn’t, you’re not going to be very useful or maybe even happy in this world. Many years later in graduate school, we studied human resource management and development. One part of the study was the 20 • OVER THE ROAD

art of keeping people motivated at their job and career placement. The science of career placement and motivation is primarily focused on keeping the employee ‘happy’. It covers a whole host of various benefits: safety, pay structure, holidays, challenges, authority, bonuses and coffee… on and on and on. Nearly all the focus was on what ‘they’ (the employee) received. Reflecting on my specific experience it seems a little narcissistic to develop a work atmosphere of keeping employees happy rather than keeping customers happy. Don’t get me wrong, I know the benefit of happy employees… it results with supposedly happy customers… who return for our services… so we can make more money for ourselves. Nope! It still comes out selfish. (I know my sarcasm is over simplifying the human resource industry your honor but allow me a little latitude as I work my way back to my original point.) So, what comes first? Is it the chicken or the egg? Is it happy employees or happy customers? I would say developing a personal attitude of service to all those around me comes first. I am responsible for my behavior and usually, co-workers will eventually model what I do. If we act selfishly, eventually so will those around us and selfishness will always work its way towards our customers. MAY 2018

The honor of serving others is the highest and noblest of all personal callings. It embodies civilizations’ truest destiny. When horrendous tragedy strikes a person or family, burdensome enough to sink one or all into deep depression, the most productive of all remedies is for the victim to serve others, work, volunteer and help those who are in need around them. It can be humanities most potent opioid.

What I’ve learned is, it’s not about what you can give me… it’s about what I can provide you! About the Author: Robert D. Scheper is a leading Accountant and Consultant to the Lease/Owner operator industry in Canada. His first book in the Making Your Miles Count series “taxes, taxes, taxes” was released in 2007. His firm exclusively serves Lease/Owner Operators across Canada. His second book “Choosing a Trucking company” is the most in-depth analysis of the operator industry available today. He has a Master degree (MBA) in financial management and has been serving the industry since he and his wife came off the road in 1993. His dedication, commitment and strong opinions can be read and heard in many articles and seminars.

Trucking is a service industry. We pick up loads from people who need it shipped and bring it to people who are in need of receiving it. The service is designed to make all three parties better off; those who want it gone, those who need to receive it and those who serve both. Instead of doing what YOU love, learn to LOVE what you do. Find a way to make other lives better. It’s infinitely easier to get paid to serve others than to find someone who will pay YOU for what you want. It’s also way more satisfying.

You can find him at www.making yourmilescount.com or 1-877-987-9787.

Self-esteem and happiness is not built by acquiring a bunch of stuff you want. In fact, wealthy people are disproportionately plagued with unhappiness and discontentment. However, those who learn to give to others and truly serve others end up with the greatest sense of self-value. It really doesn’t even matter WHAT service they perform, just so long as they see their own contribution to others. You don’t have to perform open heart surgery and save a life to serve your fellow man. Sometimes solving someone’s problem, providing a slap on the back, a compliment, a smile or joke can produce the highest value.

SPEAKING FROM EXPERIENCE Ray J. Haight

You’ll Pay A Lot… I subscribe to Seth Godin’s daily blog which you can find at: http://sethgodin.typepad. com/seths_blog/2018/04/youll-pay-alot-but-youll-get-more-than-you-pay-for. html. This is a useful, freelance marketing document that sets out strategy that you can fit into a single sentence. He recently stated: You’ll pay a lot, but you’ll get far more than you pay for! When I think on this for a few minutes, I reflect on the recent Truckload Carriers Association’s annual convention that was held in Orlando at the end of March of this year. The overall buzz in the meeting rooms and in the hallways was about the themes that prevailed in the round sessions: drivers and the lack thereof. I had the pleasure of moderating a couple of round tables that had the title of “A holistic view of driver retention” that were well attended and received great reviews. It’s hard to lose when you have a panel of some of the best minds in the industry to talk about the driver turnover issue that is industry wide and specifically, what they do inside the walls of their own companies. The panel included my good friend Kevin Burch of Jet Express, Trevor Kurtz of Kurtz Trucking, Lee Michaud of Schilli Transportation and Garth Pitzel of Bison Transportation. My panel along with many

28 • OVER THE ROAD

others, a great exhibition hall, outstanding general sessions and well-attended social events made this a must to attend occasion for any truckload carrier in North America, no matter what segment. Jack Porter, who is the program manager for Truckload Carriers Association’s Profitability Program, put on one of the most popular sessions. Along with Jack was our own Chris Henry, who is a facilitator for the Best Practice Benchmarking program facilitator and a partner of mine at www.tcaingauge.com. Chris and Jack did a session called “The Nine Traits of High Performing Trucking Companies and Their Leaders.” You can find the information on the session at: https:// tcaingauge.com/?s=the+9+trait. This seminar ran three times and was a sell out each session. So let’s go back to the title of my article. Who wouldn’t or doesn’t make decisions based on risk versus reward on a daily basis and what business doesn’t put time and money into harms way on a regular basis in an attempt to increase their businesses ROI (rate of return)? I would love to hear your thoughts on this issue. To me, expanding a business, buying out a competitor or venturing into another sector of the industry when you are not maximizing the rate of return of your primary business makes no sense whatsoever. MAY 2018

I’m speaking specifically to those companies that have high turnover or turnover that they know is heading out of sight of a reasonable number. I’m always asked what the time and monetary investment is in the beginning of a retention effort and my answer looks like this: first there are intersecting lines of both diminishing returns and increased efficiency that occur, meaning that the small investment in up-front cost for a program or a consultant only appears significant when compared to some other hard asset that the company may need. When the proper comparison is made which is the high cost of replacing just a few drivers, it pales in comparison. Secondly, one of the benefits of reducing turnover is that you eventually smooth over many of the rub points within your company that cause turnover. These rub points cost time and money so eliminating them along with reducing the number of drivers that you need to hire, turbocharges the rate of return of the retention investment.

What we experienced once we started to turn the corner on our issue was that our operating ratio began to grow proportionately and eventually exponentially to the turnover numbers we experienced as they dropped. And it continued to grow to twice what it was when we started our retention effort. We also experienced a transition of our workforce from one that might be described as a group of people that checked their brains at the door to one that was fully engaged in their jobs and truly enjoyed working at our company.

I can tell you from personal, first hand experience that when the 275 trucking company I headed decided to tackle the turnover issue that we had, we might have invested a total amount of $50-100K. The consultant portion was a small part of this. Other investments were made in developing and executing a communication strategy, investing in customer service training, developing a recognition program, social events and so on.

Safe Trucking

MAY 2018

I am thoroughly convinced that every carrier out there that has high turnover would realize the same type of benefit if they decided to take their high turnover on, to draw a line in the sand and beat the issue. Develop a strategy, seek help if needed, then persist and resist. Persist in the successful pursuit of your goal, whatever the target is and resist all the naysayers and roadblocks that get in your way. Ray J. Haight Co-founder, tcaingauge.com

WOMEN IN TRUCKING Ellen Voie

Showing Appreciation “Those who have the ability to be grateful are the ones who have the ability to achieve greatness,” wrote Steve Maraboli in Life, the Truth, and Being Free. When was the last time you received a hand written thank you note or a card just to let you know someone was thinking of you? If you’re like most people, it’s probably been too long. When was the last time you wrote a thank you note? If you know me personally, you’ll know that I am a firm believer in writing thank you notes. Apparently, I instilled that same conviction in my children, as the thank you notes from both my son and daughter are sure to follow a gift, party or act of kindness. I keep them to remind myself of the good times we shared. Most people use the excuse that they either don’t have the materials handy or they don’t have the time to write and mail a thank you note. Both excuses are just a reflection of your priorities. Keep notes, pens and stamps in plain sight so you can take a moment to send your thoughts without much effort.

38 • OVER THE ROAD

What’s more fun than receiving a note or card after a long day in the office or truck or a difficult day at school? A note is something tangible that reminds you that the sender is thinking of you. One young woman kept every card her mother had sent her after she left home. Later, she used them as decorations at her wedding by cutting hundreds of little hearts out of the cards and spreading them across the banquet tables. The groom explained to the family and friends that the decorations were the result of over 100 cards his new mother-in-law had sent to his new wife. We were all taught to say thank you and to acknowledge kindness but it seems that civility has been replaced by self-centeredness. We refuse to show our appreciation to someone because THEY haven’t shown appreciation to us! Where does it begin? Perhaps with you! If you’ve been reading my articles, you’ll know about the campaign of #SteeeringTowardKindness. At Women In Trucking Association, we make it a priority to showcase acts of kindness

by our members. From sharing home cooked meals (truck cooked meals?) with strangers, to paying for a shower for a homeless person or even offering money for a ride home, professional drivers are some of the kindest, most generous people I’ve ever met. However, drivers are also some of the most under-appreciated folks as well.

What can you do to show your appreciation? Check out www.randomactsofkindness.org for ideas and then share them with us on the Women In Trucking Association Facebook page. We’ll share them and spread the good vibes. By the way, the young woman who saved her mother’s cards and cut them into hearts for her wedding was my daughter. To this day it gives me overwhelming feelings of being appreciated.

Delivering a load on time doesn’t win any favors but if you miss your appointment you’ll hear about it. Keeping your truck in top shape is expected but if a tail light is out on the trailer, you will be penalized. Do we really need to wait for a week in August to honor our professional drivers for their hard work?

For more information about the Image Team, visit www.womenintrucking.org Ellen Voie President/CEO/Founder of Women In Trucking, Inc. ellen@womenintrucking.org www.womenintrucking.org

Author Gregory Smith asked respondents to list their greatest dissatisfaction at work for his book, Here Today, Here Tomorrow. He found that the top answer was a lack of appreciation. When companies make an effort to show their gratitude, sales increase, productivity is raised and happiness is positively affected by employees. Seems pretty simple, doesn’t it?

Mission: Women In Trucking was established to encourage the employment of women in the trucking industry, promote their accomplishments and minimize obstacles faced by women working in the trucking industry.

How can you help us in our efforts at #SteeringTowardKindness? Share your stories with us. Send someone a note or a card and watch his or her reaction. Stick a post it note where they’ll be sure to see it. Pay for the meal of the person behind you at the fast food restaurant. Donate to a worthy cause in someone else’s name. Leave a generous tip.
