MAKING YOUR MILES COUNT Robert D. Scheper

The Slippery Slope of Censorship The Ottawa Freedom Convoy may have been ‘de-occupied’ in February 2022 but in spirit it has not actually stopped. In fact, I think the method of disbanding and the aggressive nature of government only multiplied the resolve of many who attached themselves directly or even indirectly to the Convoy. So, instead of having one location with a lot of noise, there ends up being a lot of locations, each with their own voice. Flags are waving from half tons and cars all across our country, more than ever before in Canada. They aren’t having an early celebration of July 1st; they are showing their support to a movement; they are associating with the Freedom Convoy. The sheer volume of flags hanging from vehicles since January is staggering. No, it’s not universal, but it is more pride instilling than any other national affection Canada has had in our generation. The protests and convoys have not stopped either, though admittedly, the media has blacked out nearly all of them. Even so, a media blackout is not as bad as one may assume as less and less, news and information is being sent or adsorbed by classical methods. Though social media does spread much of the planning information, it seems that jurisdictions have even settled into groups or families of participants, congregating around workplace parking lots, water coolers, malls, sporting, and leisure groups. It seems that once the Freedom Convoy opened a conversation, like-minded people eventually found each other and simply bonded socially… and then kept right on bonding. These groups find ways to meet, associate and gather further support. It’s truly a grass roots movement that turned 10 • OVER THE ROAD

the banished participants into popular martyrs and celebrities. The camper with hundreds/ thousands of signatures that was parked in Ottawa is traveling around to various shows, gaining even more publicity and popularity. Last week my best friend went to Vancouver to visit his brother. While there he attended a convoy rally that went through the regions of lower BC. There were thousands attending, speckled all through the area. As he walked through the crowds, he spoke to those attending. It wasn’t long before it became known that he had attended the Ottawa Freedom Convoy in January. One by one people began asking him about it and a small crowd gathered. In its own way he became a local celebrity. The amazing thing was how unifying and bonding the January Convoy was to ‘non-truckers’ in Canada. There have been many spin-off demonstrations, each having its own galvanizing effect. They are not always of the exact focus that January had. There was even one rally called “Bill Gates Isn’t Invited Rally”, a hilarious title no matter how you look at it. I’m not sure who thought of it, but some are saying that associating with negative cohorts seems to be a new ‘thing’. I disagree, it’s not a new thing. My high school years were filled with ‘Robert isn’t invited parties’. Regardless of the media’s blackout, the movement has not slowed in its support. Oppressive situations from various perspectives are being lumped together as some sort of collective and united front. There is a growing national mistrust for all forms of government and leadership. Mistrust is also being assigned to the medical field and even the educational MAY 2022

systems. There is a widening divide between those who use government systems and those who manage them. I have even occasionally found an eagerness by individual government employees to ‘dull’ the authority they usually impose. I’m not talking Sr. Managers but individual government employees. Front line workers have even made snide comments under their breath that they ‘hate’ the imposition they are forced to impose. I think it comes from the good hearts of ordinary people to have compassion on their fellow citizens. In my 35+ years of working with CRA, I have found that 95% of them are fine people, just doing their jobs and getting back to their family at the end of the day. It’s only about 2%-3%-5% of the government workers who habitually instigate abuse (though they certainly don’t call it that, they usually refer to it as ‘justice’ or ‘equity’ or ‘the law’). Working within the CRA system provides good methods to circumvent the abusers (appeals). However, many other government systems don’t allow the public many options or even debate (such as the medical system, ie. my personal Doctor). I’m not sure, but I don’t think the 2-5% of government have thought about what it would take to stamp out a grass roots movement, or for sure a movement that has gained heroic international attention. The Freedom Convoy, to the rest of the world may live in infamy, no

matter what the spin by media is. I think it’s time for government departments to do what they need to do to soften the public’s descent. Oppressing the GOOD hearts of people is a PR nightmare that is rarely won without brutal force, and that is only temporarily. I believe in the incredibly compassionate and strong hearts of Canadian people. I do not believe we are divided as a country unless you refer to the division between those who divide and the rest of us. In the end, I don’t think government can censure TRUE compassion and unity. SAFETY DAWG Chris Harris

Three Common Daily Vehicle Inspection (DVI) Mistakes One thing that I really enjoy doing is performing road evaluations with experienced professional truck drivers. We both get to go on the road together and perform normal driving routines such as city driving, and the driver gets to show me their driving experience on the highway. Of course, before we get onto the road or highway, a Daily Vehicle Inspection (DVI) is required to be performed by the driver. What are the most common items missed, ignored, or not checked correctly, while performing the DVI? First are lights. All drivers regularly turn on their lighting system and make sure that the lights are working. The common errors or omissions here are three. One, they forget to turn on all the lights. Often the fog lights are not checked. If a light is installed on the unit, it must work. Therefore, you need to turn on all the lights. The second common mistake is not checking the high beams of 14 • OVER THE ROAD

the headlights. And the third mistake is thinking that the 4-way flashers are also showing you that the brake lights are functioning correctly. The brake lights need to be checked by applying pressure to the brake pedal. Staying with lights raises my second concern. The ABS lights - when I ask the driver how they check the ABS system, they look at me in a confused state. They often are not familiar with the dashboard indicator that comes on when the ignition is turned on and then goes off after a few seconds. Drivers are not watching for this. They are also not observing the trailer ABS light. When you plug in the trailer electrical cord, the trailer ABS light, when functioning correctly, will again turn on and then turn off after a few seconds. It stands to reason that if the ABS lights don’t come on and then turn off after a set time, the ABS system is not working correctly. Or if the ABS light remains lit, it is not functioning correctly.

MAY 2022

Thirdly, the most concerning item missed or ignored are the brakes. I am sure we all agree that truck brakes are important to road safety. Both for the operator’s safety and for the motoring public. Specifically, take note of ‘Pushrod Travel.’ Nine of ten times that I have been in a truck doing a road test, the driver doesn’t mention pushrod travel. I believe that this is both the responsibility of the carrier and the drivers. For the truck drivers, this is a very common violation found at the inspection scales. Of course, having 20% or more out of adjustment will also result in the vehicle being put Out of Service (OOS). Violations often result in tickets and always result in a major waste of time that most drivers are not paid for. The trucking company could make checking the Pushrod Travel a priority by installing brake stroke indicators. For the carrier, by installing the indicators, it is telling the drivers to inspect the pushrod. Of course, if you install the brake stroke indicators, the trucking company will need to do some truck driver education. They must show the drivers how to use this new device.

maintained. This is not exactly true. Many companies simply use Zip Ties. A Zip Tie when correctly installed shows the driver the amount of travel that the pushrod is moving. The Zip Tie solution is simple, and very inexpensive as well as easily installed by mechanics. Then a simple education of your driver force is all that remains. Drivers - when you are performing your Daily Vehicle Inspection, pay attention to your lights, ABS system and your Push Rod Travel on your brakes. They are all very important and can save you a violation, a ticket, or your life. Stay safe out there. Chris Harris Top Dawg, Safety Dawg Inc. 905-973-7056 chris@safetydawg.com @safety_dawg (twitter)

WOMEN IN TRUCKING Ellen Voie

What is Unconscious Bias? Has anyone ever told you that in order to succeed, you need to lower your voice tone, speak up more often and brag about your accomplishments? If you are a woman working in a male populated environment, these are some of the things you could do to advance your career and earn more money. Wait! What? Yes, these are all forms of unconscious bias that people may be using to limit women’s empowerment. What is unconscious bias? Also known as implicit bias, it is an unintentional way of stereotyping or discriminating against a person or group. It could be a learned bias or systematically ingrained in our brains. Since it is unconscious, we aren’t aware that we’re judging or categorizing someone based on the framework our brain provides. However, by understanding this tendency, we can first recognize it as bias and then work to remove it from our thought process. You cannot eliminate unconscious bias, but you can learn to mitigate it and it’s effect on the people around you. Let me give you some examples of unconscious bias. Managers often assume that a young woman who is growing her 18 • OVER THE ROAD

family is less eager to travel for her job. We form opinions about someone based on the car they drive or the clothes they wear, but this doesn’t always hold true (maybe they borrowed the car, or their luggage was lost on the plane.) We’ve all heard assumptions about millennials and their work ethic. Maybe that’s coming from the baby boomer generation, but a lot of stereotyping is evident when hiring from other generations. In the trucking industry, unconscious bias occurs when recruiters assume a woman won’t apply for a job pulling a flatbed or a car carrier. I’ve often heard people say that automated transmissions are more attractive to female drivers. Since when is learning how to shift gears easier for men? So, what about the tone of your voice? Researchers at Northwestern University found that ‘vocal masculinity’ was associated with a nearly seven percent increase in overall pay. Men who speak more often, regardless of their voice resonance, are viewed as having higher competence than women, who are viewed by both genders as being less competent. MAY 2022

One study found that ‘overconfident’ decision makers are more likely to be appointed to the CEO position. On the opposite end of that bias, research has shown that not only do women minimize their accomplishments, but they are also more likely to downplay their identity on the job. This includes changing hairstyles or covering tattoos. Women are also held back from promotions when they are deemed too bossy. Assertiveness is okay, but intimidation and aggressiveness are not. Be nice! This creates challenges for female executives, who have higher education levels and greater income but often suffer from chronic stress from being judged as ‘unfeminine.’

instinct, but it’s not related to being mothers as much as it is due to being a woman. We want to be liked, and we want everyone on our team to feel important and included. There’s nothing wrong with that, but if a work environment doesn’t value these goals, women will suffer in the process.

A recent article in Inc. claimed women are 25 percent less likely to share a dissenting option at work. Researchers at Bucknell University found the female college students would downplay their grade point average to be liked in an effort to protect the other person’s feelings. A Wharton study reported that women systematically rated themselves lower when it came to self-promotion, even when their work was objectively better then men’s.

Ellen Voie President/CEO/Founder of Women In Trucking, Inc. ellen@womenintrucking.org www.womenintrucking.org

Why are we limiting ourselves when it comes to advancing our careers? It’s not intentional and it’s not warranted. It’s the way we are wired. Women are driven by estrogen which promotes bonding and team building and encourages collaboration. It’s often called a maternal

MAY 2022

Unconscious bias is holding us back, but we’re not blaming just men, as we ALL share these stereotypes. We learn to categorize and then we try to fit people into these roles. By understanding and addressing our own bias, we can learn to avoid it, minimize its effect, or maybe even eliminate it.

Mission: Women In Trucking was established to encourage the employment of women in the trucking industry, promote their accomplishments and minimize obstacles faced by women working in the trucking industry.
