PATH AND PEAK SPRING 2019 The spiritual center at Wentworth is defined by its path and peaks. Beyond its walls is the path that leads the visitor first to the library of enlightenment and then to the chapel. At points the path is concrete and certain and at other times it forms like stepping stones and forces the visitor to question the intentions of their actions. A series of parallel walls occupy the site and block the visitor’s sight from the entire site. This forces the visitor to follow the path to completely understand the landscape. The path at times breaks and is uncertain because at times in life the outcome is foggy and questionable.

BERKLEE COMMONS FALL 2017 The Berklee School of Music on Massachusetts avenue and Boylston street currently lacks a proper gathering space for its students. This project revolves around the idea of making connections ranging from the human scale to the city scale. It is important for students of a music school to be introduced to new styles of music, aided by simple gestures in the architecture. A connection of a larger scale happens with the reaching across the Massachusetts turnpike. The school gives an image of reconnecting with what was separated when the highway was built but also an image of expansion.

AXIS DANCE STUDIO SPRING 2018 (Group project with Olivia Ryan, BSA ‘19) This project is a dance studio for the disabled. The concept of the project draws on the idea that one should celebrate their flaws, our imperfections are what make us unique. The architecture is an investigation into a part versus whole. From concept to final, the project has been a mass that has been subtracted from, much like the amputation of a limb from the human body. The sequence of the building is a journey through voids, each void reminds the visitor of what they have lost, but more importantly teaches them that their is always something to be gained from a seemingly

CHILDREN’S BOOK MUSEUM SUMMER 2017 This project is inspired by the children’s book Madeline and the adventerous spirit of the main character. The project aims to instill a sense of discovery within the user by introducing new thresholds to the user which one must pass through. Once passing through, the space and views completely change. This mirrors Madelilnes random wanderings throughout the city of Paris. The large concrete walls that hold the structure up serve as frames which direct the user to look across Fort Point and admire the skyline.

SPREE HAFEN FALL 2018 The German capital, Berlin, has always had an intimate relationship with the river Spree. The neighborhood of Kreuzberg owes its existance to the Luisenstadt Canal. When the neighborhood was built, many of the supplies were sent to the site via barge. The canal has since been filled in. This project is an attempt to reintroduce a nautical industrial neighborhood back to Kreuzberg. The masterplan calls for large, orthogonal cuts to be made to the shoreline, as if ships should dock there and unload into the Victoria Warehouse. The student housing building addressess the lack of housing in Berlin and draws inspiration from Le Corbusier’s Corbusier Haus in the Tiergarten.

CHILDREN’S PAVILLION SUMMER 2017 This project is a pavillion designed for children on the Fort Point Channel in Boston. It is inspired by the sensation of climing tall objects such as trees and mountains as a child. This pavillion introduces an interactive elevated installation to an otherwise even and uninteresting ground plane. The project invites the user to climb the pavillion and in the process of climbing discover and explore the architecture and construction of the pavillion.

BLOX

The Danish city of Copenhagen has a strong urban fabric that encompasses the Amalienborg Royal Axis. The opera house and Frederiks kirke follow the same axis of symmetry despite them being built hundreds of years apart. Superkilen is an urban development of parks that has since improved the neighborhood it occupies. Havneparken is a waterfront park system that connects the people of the city to the sea. Blox is an OMA project that integrates many different programs into a single, flowing building.

CANDINAVIAN CITY

rk Klopfer | prof. Robert Trumbour

This is a diagram of components of a Scandinavian city. The capital cities of Stockholm and Copenhagen have long histories and have successfully modernized while respecting their past. The old town of Gamla Stan is built on a grid pattern that has been adapted to the hill it is situated on. The Royal Palace establishes an axis for the city. Gunnar Asplund’s Public Library represents a shift towards functionalism and a Scandinavian trend of minimalism. The metro is a comprehensive transit system that connects civilians in a city where cars are expensive. The Skogskyrkogürden brought forth a new accpentance of life and death and the realization that death perhaps is not the end.
