Express Basketball: Marquette Started It, Welling Achieved Greatness, Clarke Restores Winning Tradition By Nicholas Huenefeld Nearly 50 years ago, Cot Marquette started what has turned out to be one of the most successful NJCAA men’s basketball programs in history. In 1966-67, Marquette formed a team that was then known as the Penta Tech Jaguars. In his second year, he led the team to their first 20 plus win season and its first conference championship in the Turnpike Conference. In those first two years, Marquette coached Jim Penix, who moved on to BGSU, was named the MAC Player of the Year and became the first and only player Owens has ever had selected in the NBA Draft. In 1970, budget cuts forced the college to shut the program down.

the program and, in his final two years, he led the team to back-toback 24 win seasons. Phil Sinkovich took over in 198081 and led the team to a 25-4 record and its second conference championship. After Sinkovich left, DJ Cameron and Jamie Gill coached the next three years. The program wasn’t able to achieve greatness, though, and that’s when Jim Welling entered. In 1986-87, the former assistant on Gill’s staff led the Express to a 20-12 record, their first 20 win season since 1980-81. In his second year, Welling’s team finished 11-17, but that was the only losing season he would encounter in his Owens coaching career.

Then, in 1975, Marquette, the college’s athletic director, brought in Dick Honner to restart the program.

For the next 18 years, Welling never won fewer than 22 games in a season.

For five years, Honner rebuilt

In 1990-81, Welling led the Express to their third conference

championship. The following year, the program captured the first of back-to-back national championships.

After failing to make it out of regionals in 1994-95, Welling took the Express to a 3rd place finish at nationals in 1995-96.

In 1993-94, the team nearly captured their third straight national title, but fell by five points in the title game.

He would coach the team to three more national tournament appearances before his retirement in 2005-06.

In that three-year stretch, the program went 106-6. They continued a streak of four consecutive OCCAC championships and won three straight Region XII championships - the first in program history.

In his time, the program won nearly 550 games and won two national titles, seven Region XII titles and eight OCCAC championships, including their most recent one in 2001-02.

During that time, Jeff Massey joined Penix as one, perhaps, the two most accomplished players Owens has ever had. From 1991-93, he became the program’s all-time leading scorer, was twice named national player of the year and led the two national title teams. Penix still holds the single game scoring record with 51 points, while the duo still holds 14 program records.

Jack Trainer in 2006 and won 22 games, but stepped away after one year. Kevin Skaggs coached the next four years, but after losing the most games in a single season (21) in 2010-11, the program looked in a new direction. Enter Dave Clarke, who went 24-8 in his first season and nearly led the team to its first Region XII title since Welling’s tenure. He looks to continue the resurgence this year.

EXPRESS ATHLETIC FUND

Why give to the Owens Express Athletic Fund? The mission of the Owens Express athletic program is to promote student success. We are proud to have established “A Winning Tradition” both on and off the playing field. Across our eight men’s and women’s athletic teams, we have set a standard for athletic and academic excellence which, over the course of nearly five decades, has resulted in 69 Academic All-Americans, 38 Athletic All-Americans, numerous conference championships and two national championships. Excellence, however, comes at a price. Despite significant public support from the College, the Owens Express athletic program needs regular, private support to ensure that our student-athletes continue to compete at the highest level as well as enjoy an educational environment that fosters achievement.

Your support is needed to: • Fund athletic scholarships for those student-athletes who do not receive a College scholarship. • Raise funds for students to take advantage of preseason conditioning and training opportunities as well as to represent the College at regional and national tournaments. Currently, students must raise their own funds to help defray these expenses. • Pay for expenses not fully covered by the College, such as replacement of equipment and maintenance of playing fields. Please consider supporting the Owens Express Athletic Fund today. Your contribution will help build upon our winning tradition. We pledge to be faithful stewards of your money. Sincerely,

Rudy Yovich Rudy Yovich Director of Athletics
