Express Notes In The News: Toledo Blade newspaper reporter Rachel Lenzi stopped by the SHAC earlier this week to interview several players. You can look for a feature article in The Toledo Blade this week, possibly tomorrow. Williams & Williams: Freshman guard Courizma Williams is averaging 15 points, 4.5 rebounds, two assists, 1.5 steals and one block over the past two games. She had 16 points in the previous matchup between Owens and Lakeland. Another freshman guard, Briana Williams, returns to action today after a two-game absence. She is second on the team in assists per game and first in assist/ turnover ratio. Home Stretch: After five straight road games, Owens began a period of five home dates over a six game stretch to close the regular season with the win over Sinclair on Feb. 7. Their final road tilt of the regular season is this Saturday at Edison. 200: Assistant coach Stephen Perry, who is in his eighth season, is in search of his 200th win today with the Express. The team is 199-51 in his seven plus seasons.
Today’s Game
The No. 2 Owens Express women’s basketball team is looking for its 25th straight win as they host the Lakeland Lakers today. It will be the second meeting of the season between the two teams after Owens captured a 73-58 win on Jan. 21. The game was tied with eight minutes left before Owens took control. The Express will be looking to extend multiple streaks - a 24 game overall winning streak, a 40 game home regular season winning streak and a 17 game regular season conference winning streak.
Series History
Owens has a 12 game winning streak against Lakeland. The last win in the series for the Lakers was Feb. 16, 2009 (83-80) on their home court. Since 1992, Owens is 38-15 overall, 21-4 at home, 14-10 on the road, 3-1 on neutral floors and 5-1 in postseason play against Lakeland. The last loss at home for Owens in the series came on Feb. 1, 2006. Head coach Mike Llanas is 17-5 vs Lakeland since he started in 2004-05. Interestingly enough, current assistant coach and former Owens player, Niccole Brown, netted 25 points in a Jan. 12, 2005 win over Lakeland, the first Llanas game vs Lakeland.

Upshaw On The Upswing: Sophomore guard Nicole Upshaw, who had 13 points in her team’s first matchup against Owens, averaged 22 points, 7.5 rebounds, five assists and 3.5 steals in her team’s two wins last week. For her efforts, Upshaw was named the OCCAC player of the week. Missing Duo: Sophomore guard Tyra Turks(6.4 PPG) and freshman guard Alana Stokes (6.2 PPG) have missed the team’s past three games. Turk had four points, eight rebounds and two assists, while Stokes had four points, four rebounds and five assists in the Jan. 21 matchup against Owens. Both players also started in that game. Quite The Turnaround: Over the past two seasons, Lakeland has finished a combined 0-for-24 in league play. This year, the team is 6-3 and have wins over Cincinnati State and Columbus State, the second and third place teams in the conference.
