The season is upon us where we find ourselves reflecting on the value of our family and friends a little more regularly than usual. There is something about planning for the upcoming stretch of holidays, events, and social gatherings that surface those thoughts – for us, we feel an overwhelming amount of gratitude, gratefulness, and blessings.

This upcoming season offers us many opportunities to reunite with family, friends, and colleagues, while honouring the vast variety of cultures and beliefs that make us who we are as a community. From November through to February we are blessed with celebrations of Diwali, Hannukah, Las Posadas, Winter Solstice, Christmas, and Kwanzaa shortly followed by New Years Day and the Chinese New Year.

While this year feels heavier as we come up on two full years of a very different way of life, it is the gravely difficult circumstances we have encountered together that spark such gratitude. The resounding theme towards supporting local economics brought forth a renewed sense of community. It also offered an enlightened understanding of how a connected community can move through any obstacle and come out on the other side not only more resilient, but also more aware of what others often endure in silence.

We wish everyone the most rewarding time with the ones you love and care for most. We also encourage you to continue strengthening your connections with your community, meeting your neighbours, and visiting, shopping, and supporting your local businesses as often as possible. Wishing you peace and prosperity.

Sincerely,

Rowe & Brandy

Winter is upon us and that means businesses are closing out the year and preparing for the New Year. This also means we’re officially in the holiday season with celebrations that will carry us into the spring… lights, snow, cookies, and shopping are well underway. In other words, a bit of economic relief for businesses. The shop local mantra has

never been more important than this year. Many businesses were forced to close their doors in the last few years and there are many more just barely holding on. Purchasing gift cards to local restaurants, walking around your downtown core for gift ideas and/or ordering online from local businesses are a few ways to help support this holiday season. As we head into 2022, some business trends to look out for are: sustainability efforts, human experience, flatter organization structures, and authenticity. The consumer trends have been and continue to shift in the direction of quality and experience over quantity. With most industry markets saturated with options,

ARE YOU READY?

Your Guide to

Winter Retail Therapy by Brandy Henderson

veryone knows that there is a seasonality to shopping and getting bargains. Winter is arguably one of the greatest shopping havens – not only because it is the season of so many holidays, celebrations, and gift exchanges, but December through February is historically an excellent time to zone in on some very lucrative and strategic buys for yourself and your home. is that your best strategy is to shop when demand is low, because that is when prices are also low. While it may seem a bit backwards to replace your patio furniture in the winter and buy a snowblower in the summer, its the perfect strategy.

Visit your locally owned retailers online, whether through their website or their social media channels, and get added to their mailing lists. You might be offered a discount coupon just for signing up, but you will also be the first to know of weekend specials and sales. Supporting the local arts is another excellent way to get a great deal on the perfect gift, keeping an eye out for specials being offered by local theatres and arts centres.

Economics play quite heavily when strategizing your retail goals. Most consumers do not plan, they shop for what they need as the needs arises. This is what causes the traditional retail trends that we see as we witness the effects of supply and demand. What that means for you

“Whether you are giving the gift of theatre tickets, a season pass, or a gift card to your favourite local arts organization to family or friends to enjoy, know that you are giving the gift of an experience worth remembering!” Said Chelsea Wilson, General Manager of The Foster Festival. When visiting a retailer’s online store, keep an eye our for coupons. Many retailers are working hard to blend and improve the online and instore experiences, meaning the more creative offers are beneficial to the consumer taking a few extra minutes to compare.

Avoid these common pitfalls to ensure retail success: 1. J ust because its marked down, doesn’t mean it’s a deal. Understand the average cost of an item before buying into what the price tag says. You can accomplish this by doing a quick online comparison before visiting your local stores to make the purchase. 2. Avoid getting caught up in the moment and buying something you don’t need – no matter how good of a deal it is. 3. Consider your method of payment carefully. If you need to leverage credit to take advantage of a great deal, be sure you are prepared to pay it off before the interest outpaces the savings.

Are you looking for a big-ticket item? Brick and Mortar retail stores that carry inventory often have seasonal sales. When purchasing electronics or appliances, do your shopping between December and January when stores are looking to make room for new consumer releases that typically come

available before the spring. Sometimes these discounts can be between 20-50%.

As a sought-after destination, Niagara is home to several world-class venues that support sporting events large and small and entertainment venues varying in scale from intimate arts and culture events to large theatre performances and concerts. The industry itself has seen a tremendous impact over the past two years, however, amidst challenge is a firm focus on advancement, innovation and positive traction forward. As the landscape in Niagara prepares for the upcoming Canadian Summer Games for 2022, the emphasis on environmental sustainability holds a large presence and when it comes to sports there is no reason Niagara cannot lead the world in developing ways that sports can have less environmental impact. With the Walker Sports and Ability Centre at the Canada Games Park generating 45% less greenhouse emissions and being 35% more efficient than a normal Canadian building, the Niagara region has communicated its desire to create a legacy for advocating environmentalism in the sports industry.

In similar capacity and vision, Niagara College held a virtual summit in March of 2021 to specifically address sustainability and sport, and how this can relate directly to the construction and design of buildings. The assigned Sustainability Committee plans to hold another summit in the Niagara region in March of 2022 to further engage and plan towards the future of sports and environmentalism. With respect to community sports, and

according to a survey from Canadian Tire Jumpstart and Ipsos, the largest impact is directly tied to children and youth sports. Research conducted in January 2021 showed that 3 in 10 sports organizations are permanently closing, and 1 in 3 are facing bankruptcy. The impacts are even greater on children, out of 1,000 parents surveyed with children aged 4 to 17, two thirds of them stated the pandemic played a large part in their ability to participate. They also stated their children are showing signs of anxiety and are participating in less physical activity overall. Jumpstart began an initiative to help sports organizations beginning in 2020, and have helped over 700 sports organizations, impacting over 70,000 kids, as well as supporting equity and diversity inclusions. “Sport is a crucial part of the experience industry and provides people with personal and memorable ways to connect to sport and recreation. Coming out of COVID-19, people need both entertaining and active participation opportunities. Niagara businesses and sporting providers can fulfill this need through creative services and programming.” Said Julie Stevens, Ph. D, Special Advisor to the President – Canada Games. ►►►

|| Expert contribution by: Outside of sports entertainment, the event venue spaces are working to deliver an attractive line up of shows and concerts. Live concerts have been one of the most anticipated events returning since the beginning of COVID-19, For example, and the Niagara Falls Music Live Festival will host over 75 concerts in six days to meet demands and interest. The series will take place December 27th, 2021, through to January 1, 2022, and invite visitors and local music lovers get back to what they enjoyed and make memories with those around them. Whether it be spectator sports, community film and theatre, or live concerts, there does not appear to be a shortage of visitation expected for Niagara, with Niagara Falls specifically being projected to be the highest in the country for hotel occupancy in 2022. According to real estate firm CBRE, Niagara Falls is projected to have 59% occupancy of hotels in the 2022 year. This is a large jump from the 25% and 33% occupancy numbers for 2020 and 2021. CBRE projects that because of the increased demand for domestic travel amongst Canadians during the pandemic, plus the return of U.S. tourists and business travel, Niagara Falls will be at the top of the tourism industry in the nation. CBRE also states that while Niagara is projected to lead in the Canadian tourism industry for next year, their 59% occupancy is still eight points below what they were pre-pandemic. There are several reasons for this, such as resort areas benefiting at a higher rate, a lack of business travel, travel rules and regulations, paused hotel construction, and a lack of hotel transactions. Overall, Niagara is well positioned entering 2022 and is focused on rebuilding and advancing is global positioning as a leader in sports, entertainment and recreation while investing in a more sustainable and community-rooted ecosystem.

The Significance of for Tourisim Destination

To Travel is to Shop by Brandy Henderson

travel & leisure

oday’s shopping trends are evolving, and consumers are looking for new and unique experiences more than ever before. Earlier this year, United Nations reported that global e-commerce sales in 2019 increased 4% from the year previous bringing in a total of $26.7 trillion. Despite this growth online, several studies have shown a large amount of the population is still seeking in-store experiences. For example, Raydiant’s second annual State of Consumer Behavior Report, published in January of 2021, stated that 46% of respondents said that given the choice, they prefer to shop in person rather than online.

22

The activity of shopping, although it will continue to evolve and blend between the digital and physical realms, will always remain an attractive and engaging activity for many, as well as a reason to travel. |

Create A Desirable Shop Local Tourism Destination Driven by recent changes in consumer behaviour, the concept of leveraging shopping as a tourism attraction is growing in popularity. More and more consumers rather travel to shop at the place or in the country where products are originally made as people instinctively crave connected experiences. While you can certainly acquire almost everything by shopping online, you cannot duplicate that same satisfying experience you achieve when you go straight from the source. From this perspective, multiple shopping strategies can be cultivated to create a desirable shop local tourism destination. When developing these strategies, here are the top three factors a destination may need to take into consideration:

ť Identify your consumer shopping segments

based on what’s locally available, made, or produced at your given destination.

ť Identify how to properly communicate

the special connections between the local products/services and your destination that consumers can relate with.

ť Identify how to leverage local amenities along

with shopping, both natural and urban, that can help satisfy the desired experience at your destination and achieve repeat business. ►►► REVEAL NIAGARA BUSINESS MAGAZINE

Understand Current Trends To maximize this opportunity further, it is important to understand the trends that will make this a successful endeavor. Without question, travelers want to feel more connected to the destination they are visiting, whether for cultural purposes or to simply seek out and explore a new and different place. This means that local retail spots have more to offer than the overly familiar big box brands that can be found just about anywhere. travel & leisure

Local retail locations not only provide a unique physical setting but may also provide exclusive product offerings and one-of-akind items.

24

Another critical detail to consider is implementing more popular digitized payment methods. An international audience has been known to spend more when visiting, so why not make it more effortless to accept payments beyond just |

cash and card. Mobile-friendly payment options, such as Apple Pay and WeChat Pay, provide more opportunity to capture revenue from a visiting audience.

Niagara as a Shopping Tourism Destination Niagara’s retail landscape is shopping destination worthy, with boutique shopping villages like Niagara-on-the-Lake and Jordan Village, or urban downtown areas like St. Catharines, to name just a few. Already a global destination, retail businesses in Niagara have an incredible advantage to strategically attract this emerging market. Amidst the shop local movement, what better way to help stimulate local retail businesses than by captivating travelers to spend more time (and money) directly within the local community while visiting Niagara. What isn't as familiar as our iconic Falls are the individual cities and towns that offer world-class experiences, including our retail sector. Look at The Post Office by Shannon Passero™, located in the beautiful downtown district of Thorold, Ontario. Collaborating globally from design to manufacturing, the store delivers a lifestyle clothing brand out of it’s 6,500 sq. ft.- award winning, historic boutique. This is one of many examples of substantial retail presence located in Niagara.

“The revitalized Downtown Thorold attracts daily visitors to our community. This is attributed to the quality of products and customer service that the various shops and retailers provide, as well as the intentional communication strategy that business owners and the BIA collaborate and execute on.” Says, Marco Marino, Manager of Economic Development for the City of Thorold.

Perform An Updated Tourism Strategy Niagara possesses a unique ability to capitalize on the tourist and commercial power that already exists, while leveraging the strength and support of ample destination marketing organizations and encouraging collaborations between hotels, bed and breakfasts, and travel and tour companies. These synergies can and should be used to reinforce the attractiveness of this destination through innovative messaging and programming that will attract the different shopping segments of the tourist market.

In speaking with Eduardo R. Lafforgue, President & CEO at Niagara-on-theLake Chamber of Commerce & Tourism NOTL, he expressed that a united front in one way or another is crucial. “We are working with other Chambers on multiple campaigns that promote how to take advantage of the many retail possibilities we have in Niagara, for example the recently launched #NiagaraMyWay campaign. Targeting to both a local and surrounding market such as the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) will yield positive results.” Said Eduardo. Sources: https://news.un.org/en/story/2021/05/1091182 https://www.raydiant.com/blog/state-of-consumer-behavior-2021/

Individual businesses can contribute directly by redefining communication strategies. For example, constructing a powerful and suggestive itinerary that takes travelers through an experiential shopping day, from visiting local clothing boutiques, specialty food shops, to local farmer’s markets. Coupled with vehicle charging stations, detailed car wash garages, etc. — also creating itinerary to solve potential situations that travelers may be in.

travel & leisure

26

This does not mean that Niagara should not continue to focus on advancing the global awareness of the wine industry, or the expansive cultural and entertainment offerings, but there is no reason to miss out on the exceptionally lucrative traveler-driven shopping trends. All related establishments should work together to promote targeted shopping tourism campaigns to activate this experience throughout all of Niagara’s unique destinations.

There are numerous reasons that law firms consider a merger, such as a stronger representation of practice areas, geographical areas of service, succession planning, company culture and governance, and profitability. When looking at today’s client needs, many often require service that spans a more national or global scale and to serve those needs best, a merge can provide the geographical and talent profile that is needed in a more time effective manner than acquiring more associates. Discussions of a potential merge between these firms have been underway for quite some time, with the final terms brokered amidst the global pandemic. Strong relationships and aligned values in conjunction with the individual strengths and legal disciplines played a part in the final decisions to merge, deploying a strong and united footing that leads into 2022.

Ryan Harrison CEO and President

Welland Jackfish Baseball Club Ryan Harrison has been with the Intercounty Baseball League franchise since its inaugural season in 2011 as the Burlington Twins. Starting as a game-day employee Ryan quickly became deeply involved becoming the Director of Operations during 2013 under the Burlington Bandits moniker. Ryan, along with partners Jason and Dan formed the Burlington Herd Baseball Club in order to purchase the team from then-President Scott Robinson. Welland Jackfish Baseball Club In the summer of 2017, Ryan Harrison, Jason McKay and Dan Pokoradi purchased the rights to an IBL franchise. After two seasons in Burlington, the club moved to Welland and the 2,340-seat Welland Stadium was rebranded as the Welland Jackfish, just in time for the 2019 season. The 100-year-old summer league is one of the oldest baseball leagues in the world, established in 1919, drawing significantly more fans to a friendly ballpark experience than any league of its kind. At the heart of the team is the community. “We donated over $25,000 to local non-for-profits and charities. We also hold numerous food drives and donate tickets to groups in need,” says Ryan. “Following the 2019 season, the donations from the Jackfish 50/50 drive were enough to purchase a seeing-eye dog. With the Welland Lions Club, we were able to help someone in need.” Fans are also top priority, the heartbeat of the organization and what keeps them going. “We are adopted as fans first,” says Harrison. “Our fans are number one and in everything we do, we make sure it is entertaining and fun for them.” They continue to add new events outside their normal programming in hopes to drive up revenue and bring the community together. This will include the annual cornhole tournament, snowpitch tournament and much more.

She is responsible for the direction and growth of the River Lions through implementing new directives for business development and overseeing employee productivity.

In 2007 the Niagara IceDog’s hosted their inaugural season and Joey has been part of the team since the beginning, supporting the franchise move from Mississauga and working as a goalie scout. He advanced to Assistant General Manager for six seasons and became General Manager in 2016.

Niagara River Lions Niagara River Lions are a Canadian Elite Basketball League. In 2019, the team announced their move to the newly formed Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) with five other teams from across Canada. In the CEBL's three short years of existence, they have made an incredible mark on the game of basketball in Canada, and have grown to nine teams (Niagara, Hamilton, Guelph, Ottawa, Montreal, Scarborough, Saskatchewan, Edmonton & Fraser Valley) heading into the 2022 season, which is set to tip-off in May. “Not many people know this, but our name, the Niagara River Lions, comes from the Niagara Region Coat of Arms which features a mythical creature; a river lion, on it. This creature represents the pride and strength of community, which is something that our organization has strived to live up to from day one,” says Michelle. “It is extremely important for the staff and players to be part of the fabric of the Niagara community. Each season the team dedicates countless hours to the community.” “Our goal is to provide two hours of non-stop entertainment for fans, where you don't need to be a basketball fan to enjoy yourself.” Said Michelle. The River Lions are always trying to set the bar high when it comes to in-game entertainment. Over the years there has been live music, pyrotechnics, half-time performers, activities for kids, a blimp that flies throughout the arena, and so much more.

Community involvement is at the forefront of the team and promote appearances that enrich the experience of their fans. “We are involved with countless charities, have multiple player appearances at local schools every week, provide mentorship and guidance programs for youth, and give back to our community through regular jersey auctions for charity among many other things,” says Joey. “We truly feel we embrace the community, and we have in turn been embraced by the entire region and we thrive on positive community outreach.” Each season includes a teddy bear toss game that occurs just before Christmas. “When we score our first goal on teddy bear toss night everyone in attendance throws donated plush toys for sick children in Niagara area hospitals,” says Joey. “Once the thousands of toys are collected, our players along with the NRPS delivers them to children in need all around the region. Not only is it a highlight of the year to spearhead such an impressive initiative, but to be able to provide these kids with a smile and a positive interaction with our players is something that means a lot to us.” “Certainly, what I am most proud of during my time here so far is building the roster with not only high-end athletes but great young men as well. Every player we bring to Niagara is a high-character person who cares about our community and is a positive role model for the next generation from our region.” Said Joey.

Tara Rosling Owner

Jennifer Armstrong Founder & Owner

Sarah Yurkiw Owner

Originally from the west coast, Tara Rosling has been a permanent resident of the Niagara Region since 2009. Tara's primary hat is that of an actress, and she has worked professionally in the worlds of theatre, film & tv for over 20 years. She has been an avid lover of the great outdoors since she can remember and has been a long-time advocate for environmental awareness.

After graduating from Ryerson with a fashion design degree, spending over a decade in the industry, and seeing a lot of dishonest practices and a shift towards cheaper plastic-based fabrics, Jennifer felt it was time to look at clothing in a whole new way: sustainable, comfortable, and flattering.

Little Green Shop

When her previous company moved cities, Jennifer decided it was time to take a leap of faith and focus on making sustainable clothes right here in Canada. Ecolove focuses on sustainability and Canadian-made products. Sustainability is about consciously evaluating and making decisions in all aspects of your company to do no harm to people, or the environment and the goal is to create products within a company that put the people and the planet first.

Sarah wanted to own a shop in Downtown St. Catharines since she was a little girl. After working as a makeup artist in the Niagara Wedding industry for many years, she knew what her clients wanted when shopping for beauty products. Sarah saw a gap in the local market for a cruelty-free beauty shop and was determined to fulfill the need by creating a warm, welcoming, and inclusive space to buy beauty products, with kindness as our core value.

Little Green Shop

The little green shop is an old-school, eco-friendly company offering sustainable products for home & body, providing only green goods hand-crafted with awareness & care. “Launching an eco-friendly company had been an idea in my mind for quite some time; but ultimately, the little green shop was borne out of my daughter's blossoming environmental awareness and desire to be proactive,” says Tara Rosling. “She (Eliana) founded an eco-club at her school in 2019, and I helped her organize an 'eco awareness' table for the school's annual fundraiser. There was product left over after the event, so I made an impulsive decision to just go for it.” The little green shop is an advocate for environmental awareness and has created a new and deep passion within the community. The shop acts as a local resource for the green at heart- whether it’s a blossoming awareness or they are already a devout ‘eco-warrior’. “We have introduced many eco-friendly products to the community; and have already helped reduce consumption of single-use plastics and toxic chemicals in the region.” Said Tara. They are regularly giving back to the community through donations to local charities such as Gillian’s Place and advocating for social justice and environmental awareness by organizing and hosting fundraisers for causes such as the Indigenous Residential School Survivor Society, where the shop raised $1,500.

Ecolove

Ruby Red Beautiful

Ecolove

“Our machines are energy efficient; we use plant-based certified eco-friendly fabrics, non-toxic dyes and sustainable packaging materials. We create soft, comfortable and versatile designs, allowing our customers to be more sustainable by getting more versatility from one garment.” Said Jennifer. Supporting the community through the donation of sales proceeds is one of the ways Ecolove makes a difference. “We recently started a campaign where 40% of the proceeds from all underwear sales are going towards our local women’s shelter, Gillian’s Place,” says Jennifer. “With domestic violence rising during the pandemic, we feel it is very important to support and help women who are suffering in our community during this time.” While sales had climbed over the past few years it came to an abrupt stop with the onset of the pandemic. Ecolove had the time to refocus efforts and decided to find a way to help the community. Jennifer started making masks to help Niagara residents stay safe and donated over $2,000 of proceeds to the Niagara Health Foundation.

Ruby Red Beautiful As a full-service beauty boutique and makeup studio, they carry cruelty-free beauty products with many Canadian-made and plantbased options, in earth-friendly packaging. They offer makeup lessons, workshops, and makeup applications in studio. They partner with hairstylists and local catering company Foodswings Catering to offer a full bridal experience to our bridal clients. “We make it a priority to support BIPOC, LGBTQ and Women lead companies, with ethical practices. Cruelty-Free is of course an important component of that, but also companies that respect their employees' humanity and are using earth-friendly ingredients and packaging,” says Sarah Yurkiw, Owner of Ruby Red Beautiful. “We recently made a pledge that any new brands coming into our shop must use Earth Friendly Packaging. Be it Metal or Glass, which is easier to reuse, or recycle, or Biodegradable Packaging. If plastics cannot be avoided, they must be Post-Consumer Recycled Plastics.” Ruby Red Beautiful’s core values are community and kindness, and this is what sets them apart. “I know that might sound a bit cheesy or cliche. But that’s what drives us. Ruby Red Beautiful is a community. Our customers, our clients, our brands and makers, our neighbours make up that community, and we have so much love and gratitude for all of them.” Said Sarah

Sponsorships Contra Deals

Why Your Marketing Plan Should Include These Strategic Investments

ince the beginning of humankind, before formal currencies were developed, people traded items that had a practical value associated in order to acquire the goods that they needed. When currency was invented, it did not replace bartering but instead created a more organized system.

new networking opportunities. In the long run, this boosts your company’s position within market-micro and macro.

A contra deal, also known as a business barter, is when a business exchanges its goods and services for the goods and services of another. It should be mentioned that this is not a loophole for taxes, and that all contra and barter deals must still be documented and accounted for, and your accountant will be happy to guide you accordingly. What you can leverage is only as good as what you have to offer. To begin the negotiating process, you need to understand your strengths and what you have to offer. The key is to emphasize and communicate your strengths to your potential collaborator and thoroughly evaluate the swap before accepting the first offer. Make sure you’re receiving a true value. It is easy to overlook the discrepancy when it feels as though you’re receiving a free service or product, however, it is far from free and must be treated as such (value for value). Contra deals are a tried-and-true marketing method that businesses have been using for years. Contra dealing will ultimately lower your business’s operating cost which allows you to invest in other avenues to grow your business. Staying competitive and sustainable is what equates to healthy growth year after year and the way to do that is by adapting to the ever-changing market. Contra dealing inherently fosters business relationships and cultivates

Contra deals are extremely flexible and can be made in any sector of business with any other sector of business. In digital specifically, you have a lot to leverage. Your service is essentially access to targeted online traffic which is integral to your potential collaborator’s business and its reach. There are a multitude of digital services you can leverage, such as data collection, industry how-to’s, landing pages, SEO support and more. Like contra deals, taking advantage of key sponsorship opportunities can assist you in reaching very specific business goal. As a form of marketing, sponsorship is a strategic approach that allows you to connect with a targeted, niche market and not only build brand awareness, but also offer education and drive sales activity. Banners, booths, brochures, audiovisual displays, and swag are all examples of the varying promotional sponsorship opportunities made available through events like trade shows, award ceremonies, or sporting and charity events. Business benefits aside, sponsorship and contra deals are also great for community support. As mentioned before, measuring value before finalizing a deal is key when the objective is to not lose profit, and understanding the benefit to both organizations will ensure the right deal for the right time. As we move into 2022, be sure to revisit your strategic marketing plan and determine how your business can leverage these critical strategies to connect with new markets. BOUNDARIES

Creative Application of Technology Powers a More Accessible Gaming Industry by Brandy Henderson and Innovate Niagara

echnology has a presence in just about everything we do. It has changed the way people live day to day and has influenced every industry sector; from transportation, to education, medicine, and entertainment to highlight a few.

For years the lack of diversity and accessibility in gaming has been a hot topic, but the movement towards closing the gap has been minimal. The gaming industry is arguably bigger than film, television, and music combined. Yet, the mainstream development of widely accessible gaming materials is insufficient. Falling Squirrel, an independent video game studio located in Niagara, developed a fully audio based game, leveraging 3D audio and haptic controller feedback. Titled

‘The Vale: Shadow of the Crown’, this authentic storydriven, action-adventure game experience was designed for visually impaired and sighted gamers alike. In speaking with Dave Evans, Founder and Creative Director of Falling Squirrel, it was important to recognize that the creative innovation would be just as important, if not more, than the technical innovation required to supply such an invigorating audio-based experience. “The best way to expose and maximize the benefits of technology is to focus on the creative side – to get outside of our traditional mindset that caters to the majority. Thinking about how a specific experience can be heightened without the combination of multiple senses pushes your thinking to be bold and inventive.” Said Dave. REVEAL NIAGARA BUSINESS MAGAZINE

technology

In the entertainment industry, the creative use of technology has acted as a catalyst to provide highly immersive and engaging gaming experiences. There are, however, several companies leveraging existing technology to unleash their creative potential and push standard gaming development boundaries.

| VOL. 2 | ISSUE 4

Dave and his entire team at Falling Squirrel has leveraged the power of collaboration at scale, beginning right here in Niagara. Together with Innovate Niagara, industry-specific organizations, and the visually impaired community, a large cross-collaboration of skilled and talented people throughout Niagara and beyond has been collected. “There is no lack of talent, skill or technical innovation in Niagara, and the community here is well-connected all around the world. We have experienced it first-hand and there really are no limitations.” Said Dave. The right combination of creativity, skill, software, and hardware all join to form a powerful opportunity to break down barriers within the gaming industry. The technology already exists, it just needs to be pulled together, like an orchestra of multiple instruments creating a beautiful melody. From a software perspective, voiced menus, text-to-speech software, and screen readers can be used to turn text and elements of user interfaces into voice. Binaural headsets allow for a more immersive audio experience, combined with 3D sound design, proper story triggers, and motion accessories such as haptic controllers allow for more immersive gameplay.

In the end, this is a novel experience for sighted people that was developed by sighted and blind developers - and is very well received by both communities. Our next step is to do our part in having the popular games more accessible to both communities. This should not be an “Indie” game development goal. It should be mainstream.” Said Dave.

restaurant this Christmas holiday in their honour, especially my mother," said Danny.

Although his culinary specialty is Japanese, Chef Danny Rimando of Danny's Sushi Restaurant is Filipino and has many fond memories of the traditional "Noche Buena."

Noche Buena is a Philippine Christmas tradition that originated during the country’s Spanish colonization in the 16th century. Noche means “evening” and buena means “good” in Spanish. On the day before Christmas, it was a religious practice back then that people fast the entire day until after the mandatory midnight mass. Then festivities were held in households immediately following the mass; they called it “Noche Buena.” Technically Christmas day, celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ became synonymous to a “good evening” celebration with abundance of food. This tradition is kept by millions of Christian Filipinos from around the globe where food offerings include sweet rice cakes called "bibingka" and "puto bumbong," (purple rice cakes steamed in bamboo tubes).

"The day before Christmas was dedicated to cooking. My mother spent all day in the kitchen then laid out a huge buffet for anyone who dropped by our house with holiday wishes. A variety of traditional delicious food would flow all day, all evening, and after the midnight mass; people would visit well into Christmas morning. She kept the tradition alive in Canada from 1979 until 1994 when she became ill. She passed away in 2002, and sadly we lost my father shortly after that. I'm grateful for the traditions I experienced with my parents, and I want to do something at the

Chef Danny Rimando has been part of the Niagara Falls culinary scene for over 30-years. He and his wife Megumi own Danny's Sushi.

Tiffany Sacco, proud mom, event planner, and Pampered Chef consultant, is passing down her love of cooking for her big Italian family with her daughter.

Jessica and Steve Bretzlaff opened The Bagel Oven when they moved to Niagara, bringing their unique take on the classic Montreal-style bagel to the region.

Event Planner and Pampered Chef consultant, Tiffany Sacco, her family gathers every year for the traditional "Italian Christmas Fish Dinner." "We enjoy our multi-course fish dinner with fantastic appetizer spread, desserts, and cocktails. Although, what I love the most is our dessert tradition which I'm passing on to my daughter. I'm teaching her how to make Pizzelle cookies. A friend of mine gave me her mother's Pizzelle iron, with a condition that I hand it down to my daughter. These heavenly, thin and crispy, waffle-like cookies are customarily anise flavoured. I've adapted the recipe, but I make vanilla, coconut, Nutella, and almond as my personalized version I share with my daughter." According to Tiffany. Jessica Bretzlaff, CEO of The Bagel Oven, says food played a central role growing up in Toronto's Jewish community. During Chanukah holiday, families sing songs, play games, give children gifts, light the menorah, and have daily scripture readings. “My favourite memory is our own "Family Chanukah Party!" Our house was filled with family and friends enjoying delectable traditional food such as latke. Chanukah celebrates oil; thus, we love latke deep-fried, fresh from the stovetop with sour cream and applesauce! The latke (potato pancake) is typical for most Eastern

European households, and Sufganiyot (deep-fried doughnut) is more Israeli tradition. I've had baked versions of both, and they're not the same." Says Jessica. Everyone agreed that although the real magic of the holidays is in the time-honoured tradition with loved ones around food, it's also good to balance your indulgence with health sensibility. Tiffany says, “keep healthy over the holidays, watch what you eat but don't restrict yourself at your favourite meal.” Jessica pointed out that holiday food can be heavy, but it's full of "Vitamin Joy." Danny adds, “it's okay to eat whatever you want, but don't overdo when it comes to alcohol.” Holiday traditions bring us together in celebration. When food is at the heart of the festivities, it's important to enjoy the dishes that make the season meaningful. We have connected with Diane Archer, from Compassionate Body Pilates, Josh Green, Owner of Go Fitness Niagara, and George Picard, Director of the Village of Healing and Wellness, to deliver you with a winter routine that is realistic and refreshing. We asked for their best 5-minute exercises, which we're combining to bring you a doable 15-minute winter workout. With limited time, Josh and Diane agreed that working on your core is the most productive way to spend your fitness, while George breathing exercises that can add more impact in the beginning and end of your core workouts.

George suggests a book was written by G. Catlin published in 1861 called, The Breath of Life that illustrates adenoid faces in many engravings and advocates nose-breathing. Though with George, The Breath of Life is a simple, effective breathing technique that oxygenates blood cells and reduces stress and anxiety.

DECEMBER 2021 |

To begin, we will get into position for warm up breathing exercise: ͒ Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, hands at your side, knees slightly bent. ͒ Take a deep, slow breath as you raise your arms to shoulder height, palms down. ͒ As you exhale slowly, extend your arms horizontally to the side palms facing inward. ͒ Inhale slowly again and bring your arms back towards the center, shoulder-width apart. ͒ Then slowly exhale as you take your arms back down to your side, palms down. ͒ Remember to keep your arms relaxed.

According to George, "ancient health practices, such as Qigong (pronounced chi-gong) focus on the whole person. Studies show the effectiveness of Qigong not only for good overall health but also in healing many of today's health issues. Simple slow movements combined with slow deep breathing bring the body back into balance, encouraging physical fitness and spiritual well-being. Adding this element to your workout brings peace of mind to the table as well." Next, Diane takes us through a “Seated Partial Rollback Series” – this is a fantastic exercise, but Diane cautions you to skip this positioning if you have existing lower back issues with bulging discs: ͒ Start position: Sit tall, legs parallel, knees bent, arms straight out in front at shoulder level. ͒ Inhale to prepare, exhale to tilt your pelvis, tucking your tail under and rolling back onto your pelvis, creating a c-curve in your spine. ͒ Pause and take a breath in, widening your arms to the sides, then exhale to return to the start position. ͒ Repeat for 4 rotations ͒ You can add a rotation, overhead reach and then advance the difficulty by rolling all the way down to the floor as your strength improves.

According to Diane, "this exercise develops abdominal strength, spinal mobility, and core control. In Pilates, quality of movement is important, so you go slowly through the entire movement to work your muscles efficiently. This is my favorite because it can be adapted to any fitness level, and it's a great way to gain core strength quickly."

|| Expert contribution by:

For the next part of the routine, Josh suggests alternating between the next two exercises for 60 seconds each until the 5-minute counter is up: ͒ The Plank – For beginners, start on your knees, place your forearms on the ground, elbows under your shoulders. (You can advance this by lifting your knees off the ground.) Drop your hips down until your tailbone is slightly lower than the top of your spine. Take a deep breath and pull your navel toward your spine. Once the abdomen is tight, keep it there and go back to regular breathing. ͒ The Vacuum – While seated, standing, or lying down, pull the navel back as far as possible and hold while breathing normally. It's important not to hold your breath on this one, as breathing is a crucial part of the routine. "These exercises strengthen the Transverse Abdominis located under the obliques. It wraps around your spine, providing strength and stability helping draw the abdominal muscles inward. By strengthening them, you can flatten your stomach and reduce back pain at the same time." Josh said. Once these core exercises are completed, return to a standing position, and conclude your workout with the last 2.5 minutes of breathing exercise. Building this into your daily routine places emphasis on core strength and overall well-being. If you have time, follow this workout with a cup of hot tea and do not let winter woes derail you from taking this short time for yourself.

THE RISKS OF

INVESTING And Understanding Your Options

aving a diverse investment portfolio is a great way to reduce volatility and avoid putting all your eggs into one basket. There have been many avenues for investors to earn great rewards, however, with great rewards comes greater risk. It is important to research the varying types of investments and corresponding risk levels to help guide you. Different people have different risk tolerances and understanding these will help you have a more informed discussion with a certified professional about the strategies available to you.

MUTUAL FUNDS One of the oldest ways for investors to grow their portfolio value, mutual funds have the support of other investors pooling money together into stocks. Mutual funds are seen as a safe option because of protection for investors if a firm goes bankrupt with the CIPF and IPC. They also hold different types of stock in one investment instead of needing to fund individual stocks. Despite being considered a low-risk option, that still doesn’t

mean that they don’t have any. They are putting money in the stock market, meaning they are dependent on the market’s whims. Currency risk can be an issue, so if the exchange rate of foreign currency goes up, the returns on an investment can equal a loss. Inflation is also a risk, where if the cost of living goes up, the amount of money made from a return can decrease. There is liquidity risk, where the bond issuer cannot sell an investment because it is declining in value, therefore having no buyers. Regardless of the risks that come with mutual funds, it can be a good way for a new investor to diversify their portfolio and understand the stock market before diving into individual stocks.

PENNY STOCKS Penny stocks have become one of the most popular modes of investment. They’re cheap, but high-risk, yet the returns from investing in a penny stock can also be extremely high. They exploded in popularity over the past year with

companies like Gamestop and AMC, where it was relatively easy for investors to buy stock and gain huge rewards from the fraction of the money they put into it. Because they can yield such high profits, they are extremely high risk. They are highly speculative and depend on the market which can be unpredictable. There’s also the risk of promoters making the penny stock seem bigger, or soon to be bigger, than it really is, which encourages investors to buy more stock or hold their position instead of selling. Any kind of low-quality penny stocks are guaranteed to generate major losses when the bubble bursts. They may be profitable for a short period of time, but low-quality penny stocks are the most volatile out of all penny stock types. While penny stocks may be trendy, they have a lot more risks than benefits, and investors should only invest in penny stocks if they have money they would be fine with losing.

seem tempting because of the possibility for high returns, it is valuable to learn about the risks. Having knowledge of the risks that come with different types of investments can lead to smarter decisions, which can help avoid losses in the long run.

BITCOIN

finance & investment

One of the hottest trends in the investment market, Bitcoin is a digital currency that can be used as both a payment and an investment but has no physical version like paper money. Transactions through Bitcoin are made anonymously, and don’t need to follow currency conversion because the Blockchain records every transaction and connects it to a data system. They can be purchased online for a fraction of a coin and used for different purchases. There is a rule that only 21 million Bitcoin can be produced, making it appealing for investors since this protects against inflation. While these benefits sound enticing, Bitcoin is more volatile than penny stocks and has extreme risks. Transactions are decentralized through the Blockchain, so there is no government protection from criminal activity. The digital wallets that investors use can easily be stolen, as they generally rely on one password to open the wallet. If a government did intervene, they could make Bitcoin illegal. It also has extreme ups and downs in terms of its value. Bitcoin, while emerging as a popular form of investment, comes with great risks and investors should be mindful before deciding if they want to delve into the market.

NFTS A new form of investing, NFT stands for “Non-Fungible Token”. It uses Blockchain technology to produce unique identification 58

codes and metadata for real life objects. Because of the uniqueness in their identity, they cannot be interchangeable. They function very similarly to trading cards. NFTs manifest in many different modes, the most common form of NFT investing is digital artwork, sports highlights, Tweets, and video game skins. They can translate into real-world objects like sports shoes and cars. However, they still carry risks like any form of investing. Like Bitcoin, they are decentralized so there is no protection from the government against criminals, and NFTs use the same digital wallet as Bitcoin. The asset could simply vanish or be deleted because they are stored online, which would make it worthless if it ceases to exist. They are also highly speculative, so they are only worth what people are willing to pay for. Also, investors don’t own anything. When they are sold, the original owner retains the copyright. They may be the newest form of investment, but that doesn’t mean it’s not important to take a step back and be careful of the risks that come with it. Making investments is a good way for people to understand the economy and make some money while doing it. Having a variety of ways to invest can also help diversify a portfolio and help decrease risks when investing. Many new modes of investment have made this easier. While some of these investments like Bitcoin and penny stocks

TO BUY or NOT TO BUY And When It’s Best,

rent

by Brandy Henderson

HE PAST FEW YEARS WE HAVE WITNESSED CANADA’S HOUSING MARKET EXPLODE WITH RISING PRICES ACROSS THE COUNTRY. THE CANADA MORTGAGE AND HOUSING CORPORATION (CMHC) RELEASED ITS SEPTEMBER 2021 HOUSING MARKET ASSESSMENT REPORTING HIGHER VULNERABILITY AT A NATIONAL LEVEL, LARGELY BEING DRIVEN BY SPECIFIC PRICE ACCELERATION AND OVERVALUATIONS IMBALANCES IN

The rising valuations are no longer confined to growing urban markets, but also suburb and rural areas. These market fluctuations are key drivers in the substantial changes we are seeing in homeownership trends through various generations. It also means that there is no simple answer to this debate, and that the best decision for you will be dependant upon your own number-crunching and soulsearching. For the boomer generation, there is a strong value associated to home ownership. When looking at the statistics, real estate valuations throughout their lifetime has had a very positive impact on their net worth, with their home equity being the root of their financial and retirement security. “Owning your own home is one of the biggest investments that you will ever make in your life. Owning your home helps to

build equity over time and in this current market, it is cheaper to own than rent. Being able to purchase a home is a big accomplishment and requires a lot of hard work, but it will give you a great sense of pride and fulfillment for years to come.” Said Michele Cotter, of Colborne, Ontario.

that it is an absolute myth homeownership is a guaranteed investment. Owning a home that is also your principal residence is an expense, and since an investment should generate cashflow, you cannot enter homeownership on the sole pretense that you are investing.

When it comes to the gen-x and millennial generation, the exorbitant housing prices that have far outpaced the income-earning potential, the difficulty in acquiring a home is at its highest point, followed by uncomfortable debt to income ratios and a high possibility of moving into retirement with remaining mortgage debt.

Home ownership comes with substantial financial risks, and market fluctuations, unexpected expenses, taxes, insurance deductibles and of course inflation all cause continued increases in cost over time. To assess whether you are ready for homeownership, the CMHC encourages you to evaluate five components:

All these factors lead many in the typical “home buying” stage of life to question whether it is the right move for them.

1. Compare how much you currently spend on expenses and debt payments with the amount you have saved or invested.

Although the boomer generation has been very blessed with how their homes have generated tremendous equity for them, there is room to make the argument

►►► 2. Understand how much you can afford to spend on housing each month without risking financial health. 3. Assess what you need to save for upfront costs of buying a home. (Includes down payment, inspection and appraisal fees, insurance costs, land registration fees, legal fees, repairs, renovations, moving costs, etc) 4. Know what you be spending each month with homeownership expenses added to your current financial situation. 5. Understand your credit score to demonstrate your ability to consistently pay bills and debts with a copy of your credit report. Depending upon your personal circumstances and short-term vs long-term goals, the benefits of renting can by far outweigh the benefits of purchasing.

Rental Benefits k Limited responsibility for unplanned maintenance and repair costs k No need to save for high down payments and property tax costs k Access to perks and amenities like pools, spas, and gyms that otherwise wouldn’t be affordable in your own home k Flexibility to relocate, upsize or downsize as your lifestyle and needs change Sourcing the right rental arrangement could also lead to financial freedom. With less upfront costs, you have the flexibility to invest more heavily into scalable investments and retirement planning, which could also give you a stronger foothold on homeownership down the line if you decide that its time. “At this time in my life I was downsizing, and renting was the right option. I now have amenities that I did not have in my previous home, such as a gym and a heated, saltwater pool. It was the right choice.” Said Michelle Tessier of St. Catharines, Ontario. Everyone needs a place to call home, and whether that home is one that you rent or one that you own, the most important factor is if it is right for you. Assess your short term and long terms goals, and work with professionals that can answer your questions and guide you. Renting could be the best way to live the lifestyle of your choosing, but if home ownership is your goal that renting could also lead you to a more secure and prosperous home ownership journey down the road. Effective People

The Art of Communication by Erin King

hether you're in charge of the whole operation or one piece of the puzzle, having good work habits in order can be the difference between a workday you love and one you dread. Habits that enhance efficiency and productivity make life easier for everyone, keep morale high and promote a healthy work culture. A known history of good work habits can decide whether you're picked up or passed over by an employer. Most people would probably prefer to work for a well-run company than one that's chaotic if given a choice. You probably won't hear people complain too much about a workplace that operates efficiently. There are many opinions on what makes a workplace successful from different viewpoints. In general, bosses and workers can have different ideas about what's most beneficial. A functional workplace might include good lighting and chairs, a receptive HR department, and essential technology. Employees might look for flexible hours and a job that gives them a sense of purpose, while a manager might value dedication and punctuality. But when it comes to overall work habits for everybody, what's the number one practice that can make all the difference?

When speaking with local business leaders about what they thought was the best habit to have - employee or boss for an optimal working environment, there is one resounding theme at the very top of the list - communication. Effective communication in the workplace benefits everybody. It's a skill that translates across all job descriptions and ranks, enhancing everyone's experience and being good for business overall. Effective workplace communication can avoid and alleviate conflict, cultivate customer relationships, promote innovation and creativity, enhance job satisfaction and employee commitment, boost productivity, and develop teamwork and trust. Laura Petrunick, Financial Advisor with Desjardin, says "Good communication involves listening, learning, sharing, caring, being open and thoughtful for my team and me.” ►►► REVEAL NIAGARA BUSINESS MAGAZINE

“When we're communicating well, we can anticipate each other's needs and feel comfortable expressing ours. Open communication allows us to show appreciation for our team members because everyone is listened to and celebrated for their opinions. It makes everyone more responsive to feedback and suggestions without feeling criticized, enabling everyone to be receptive to new ideas. This dynamic builds loyalty and trust, developing a stronger team where everyone feels valued, and if our team is strong, we can provide better service to our clients.” Said Laura. At the office, the teams Executive Assistant, Judy, has been integral in introducing many improvements to office communication. Proactively sharing ideas and seeking solutions to openly share with the team shows leadership in communication. “We appreciate when Judy communicates proactively because it makes our work lives better, and ideas that improve our methods benefit our clients as much as us.” Said Laura. Communication is critical not only to highlight the positives, but also to identify struggles and challenges. Work environments, regardless of industry, can be demanding and if team members are not comfortable sharing when they are overwhelmed, other team members wouldn't be aware to assist. “Not sharing when you are overwhelmed quickly leads to burnout and possibly the loss of an outstanding employee. We want everyone on the team to feel valued and

validated." Said Laura. Jeff Chesebrough, CEO of Innovate Niagara, leads not only his team at Innovate but also several entrepreneurs and business leaders. Building an accessible and open culture that drives growth and innovation, Jeff has often reflected on what habits truly drive effective leadership across the board. "When I posed this question to our team, the leading answer is effective communication. Communication is crucial now more than ever, with remote work being the norm and people often unable to be physically next to each other. Virtual meetings and one-on-one check-ins need to be appropriately structured each week to give team members enough time to work together in groups and pairs. There needs to be enough virtual intermingling for each team member to reach the others to enable circulation of everyone's input and shared ideas." Said Jeff. It's interesting to note that even though communication can mean different things to different people, it's clear that it's an essential building block to a successful workplace—one of the best habits to have no matter your role, your industry, or your influence. If you are looking to build a better business, be a better employee, or shine as a leader, working on your communication skills can help you create a productive, peaceful workplace where everyone feels seen, heard, and validated.
