NFHCA SENIOR ALL STAR GAME

Over the NCAA Championship weekend, Senior Captain Veronica Hardman had the privilege to compete in the NFHCA All Star Game with the top Seniors from all of Division III. Not only did she crush it, but the team showed out in strong support. We might be biased but we think V had the best fan section there!

Aside from our successes this past season, we have a lot to be grateful and excited about! From cheering via the live streams to screaming in the stands, we owe a lot to

Not only were we able to purchase new Game Day goal cages, we we are able to get new Winter Jackets for the entire team!

From the bottom of our hearts, THANK YOU!

LOOKING FORWARD

As we look towards building on this season’s success a few things have jumped out to us as coaches.

Lower body injuries plagued our roster, and while we fought through them with grit and resilience, it has become evident to us the need to supply our players with the best equipment possible. One of our next fundraising inventive will go directly to the players: we plan to provide each athlete with a new pair of turf shoes each season moving forward.

The average player runs 5.6 miles per game (plus at practice) and turf shoes need to be replaced afer approximately 300 miles of use meaning that our athletes need new shoes each season to provide the best traction, support and injury prevention.

Beyond supporting the players on the field, we want to challenge them and help them develop into the most skilled hockey player possible. In order to do that, we need to present them with greater challenges on the pitch in season.

One major goal we have for this program is to play a stronger, more difficult out-ofconference schedule. To make this possible, we are setting our sites on traveling to different regions of the country to play more challenging teams (and hopefully see some of our friends and family on the road).

Strength of Schedule is an official determination of the NCAA and is calculated utilizing our opponents’ win-loss records and our opponents’ opponents’ win loss records. By increasing our SoS with games outside of our region, we set the program up to 1) potentially host first round NCAA games, 2) achieve a national ranking in the NFHCA Coaches Poll and 3) compete at a higher caliber that prepares us for NCAA Tournament play.

With all of this in mind, we are also asking for donations to help fund traveling.

FALL 2022 RECAP | 18

Honoring the year OWU was founded, the 1842 Society provides special recognition to alumni, parents, and friends who give $1,842 or more during the year to the Annual Giving Program funds. The year 1842 was chosen to mark the founding of OWU and to recognize the uncommon loyalty, sacrifice, and commitment of alumni and friends to the university since our founding.

‣ Donors who contribute $1,842 or more annually are members of the 1842 Society.

‣ Young Alumni (Classes of 2013-2022) may join the 1842 Society by making gifs at the following levels:

0-5 years post-graduation: $18.42/month ($221.04/year)

6-10 years post-graduation: $42 /month ($504/year)

A quick note

Dear Fellow Alums, How very proud we all are of this year’s team! Roisin Dougherty, and Dee Dee Manos, who, for the SECOND year in a row, led the team to an NCAC Championship. It has been a joy for us to watch these women athletes mature, improve their skills and playing ability, play well as a team, and set/break records.

In addition to supporting our team as fans we can also support them in other ways, including financially. As loyal alums we are asking you to join us in becoming a member of OWU’s 1842 Society and designating “Field Hockey” as the recipient. It’s so easy! A once-a-month ($153.50) or quarterly ($460.50) payment will quickly add up to $1,842. Of course if you are really feeling it, we would be happy to accept the entire total in one donation! So, please consider joining us in this effort. These extra funds will augment the team’s budget for things like equipment and travel. Thank you!

With Bishop Pride, Diana Poos Roach ‘72

ALUMNI GAME

In coordination with our alumni game this year, the Athletics Department will be hosting a Women In Sports Alumni Day! During the event, there will be a plaque unveiling for Harriet Stewart, a former Athletics Director and a pioneer for Women’s sports at Ohio Wesleyan University. We will also come together to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Title IX.

Dr. Harriet Stewart served as a professor of physical education and coach for 32 years. She earned a national reputation for her contributions to women’s athletics and to field hockey. Harriet served as the first field hockey coach at Ohio Wesleyan and her teams won Ohio state championships in 1974, 1975, and 1979. To this day, Harriet Stewart is still the longest tenured and winningest coach in team history.
