ROLLING OUT

The team poses having just revealed their 2014 challenger

To start this month’s (rather belated!) newsletter the team would like to express their thanks to all that were able to come along and support the team for the rollout. We felt that the evening was a massive success, and it was so great to see so many of you there supporting us! George started the evening off with a presentation of the team’s history and previous cars (and team members), and

then lead into the technical aspects of the new car. Once the presentation was over we headed out into the foyer area, and revealed the car to the many spectators. The feedback from around the room was really positive, and with the weight of the car announced at under 160kg! even the most hardy of the FS Alumni were impressed with the team’s efforts.

FINAL BUILD

The final stages of Carly’s manufacture With the Rollout serving as the team’s final deadline for the completed car, the team were pushing 100% to get the remaining parts manufactured and tested before getting the car to a completed and presentatble state ready for the unveling. The main team goal right from the beginning of the year was to try and achieve 300km of testing mileage before the first competition at Formula Student UK on July 9th, and with the Rollout happening on June 2nd, the completed car would thenbe given a 1 month & 1 week testing period, in order to iron out any problems, and bring any upgrades to the car. The first planned test will be to take the car to the Brooklands College chassis dyno on

Friday 7th of June, to give the complete drivetrain a proof test, and also to start to finalise the engine fuelling map with the new intake system onboard. With the first shakedown of the car happening on the 6th of June, the team is currently running 14 days ahead of this time last year. Plus the FSUK competition is a week later than in 2013, and so the team is overall around 21 days ahead of where we were. This is a marked improvement, and with an aggressive testing schedule of 8 test days, hopefully the team will be able to cover enough mileage to see the new drivers getting up to full speed, and ironing out the gremlins and reliability problems that we have seen in previous years.

OXFORD BROOKES RACING – APRIL 2014 NEWSLETTER

SPONSORSHIP NEWS This month we would like to express a special thankyou to the following companies:

Our Zircotec coated exhaust pipe Thanks very much to Zircotec for coating our new exhaust pipe with their ‘Performance White’ coating, and supplying us with their ‘Zircoflex’ heat shielding material. The coating offers reduced heat transfer from the exhaust, and the Zircoflex creates a thermal barrier that we have found reduces component temperatures by more than 50%.

SECO’s bespoke shifter-barrels As well as supporting us with machining tools all year round, SECO have machined a bespoke shifter barrel for us in house. This barrel allows us to remove the false neutral from the ‘motorbike style’ sequential gearbox, and run the full 6 gears in the box.

510cc piston vs 570 with CamCoat

Thanks to AN for our fuel & air lines Big thanks to AN Motorsport for helping the team out with a new dry-break connection for the fuel system, bespoke fuel lines & bespoke air lines for the car.

Thanks to CamCoat for coating the piston and cylinder head in their thermal management triple piston coating system. This will help to increase the surface hardness and protect from wear and detonation in the combustion chamber. Finally a big thanks to Oxford Carpentry for their help with the front & rear wing CChannel molds. Visit their website here: http://www.oxfordcarpentry.com/

ROLLING ROAD

Carly put through her paces on Brooklands College’s Chassis Dyno

The first outing for Carly will be at Brooklands College’s rolling road facility, within their engineering department. This will be the first opportunity for the car to be loaded up fully, with the engine, gearbox and drivetrain put under maximum loading while the engine map is fine-tuned. The rolling road facility allows the team to understand more of the differences between the in-house engine dyno here at Oxford Brookes Uni and the performance of the engine on the car, and helps us to improve the operating conditions of the

engine back at base, as well as offering the team an opportunity to make changes to the map based on transient running, instead of just steady state as can be observed at Brookes. The powertrain group has already seen an improvement of around 30% in both Torque and Power this year through the combined usage of the Brookes and Brooklands facilities, and when the car hits the track for the first time next week, we are expecting a greatly improved Acceleration time, meaning more points at competition.
