a Each year
seems a little bit easier - and harder - all at the same time. We start talking about next year’s festival before the current one ever takes place and stop only long enough each year to enjoy new and old friends as filmmakers descend on Oxford for one weekend. It seems to go by in a blur and here we are again. 2012 brings new partnerships and exciting prospects. As always, we’ve got a great line up of films for (almost) everyone to enjoy. We are fortunate that many of the filmmakers are attending and are as excited as ever for our judges, panelists, and other special guests to enjoy Oxford. As more filmmakers discover our town, we anticipate more films will be created here, more collaborations with the people of Oxford and more exciting film news for us in the future. We are eagerly anticipating a bigger spotlight on Oxford when David Milch, Lee Caplin, and HBO come together to bring Faulkner back to the screen.

We have partnered with the Oxford Music Festival in hopes of further showing our guests what great energy and talent Oxford has to offer, creating even more options for entertainment, and bringing together the excitement of both festivals to the people of Oxford. We are also partnering with the Mid South Intellectual Property Institute, a collaboration between the University of Mississippi Law School and FNC. The Institute will host a two-day continuing legal education session concurrent with the Oxford Film Festival to give regional attorneys a chance to catch up on all the latest in Intellectual Property law and to enjoy the creativity that makes it possible. We are also excited about our new community film, The Show Must Go On. Be sure to catch one of the screenings. You are sure to recognize most of the cast! aa Welcome to Mississippi and the 9th Annual Oxford Film Festival. We’re glad you’re here. The Mississippi Film Office has been a proud supporter of the festival since its inception and is happy to be a part of this vibrant and innovative festival. In addition to providing a great venue for our own Mississippi filmmakers and for presenting bold and engaging independent film to an audience from throughout the South, we are happy to show off Mississippi to all of the visiting filmmakers. Oxford and locations across the state have supported location film production for almost 100 years, and we look forward to supporting the industry long into the future, wherever and however filmmaking may advance. Our Mississippi Motion Picture Incentive Program will certainly be a part of that future. A cash rebate program, we return to the filmmaker up to 30% of your local spend and resident and non-resident payroll within 45 days of completion of your production. Our $50,000 minimum spend is the lowest for a rebate in the country, and commercials, shorts, documentaries, television and features are all eligible. There are also tax reductions on production equipment. And we are committed to making changes dedicated to the continued development and support of the film industry in Mississippi. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact us at 601-359-3297, or visit our website, www.filmMississippi.org. Have a great time in Oxford and in Mississippi…and for you filmmakers, we look forward to working with you on your next project. The Mississippi Film Office Ward Emling Nina Parikh Betty Black

Friday, 10:00am (S1) Andy Harper (moderator), Joe York, Will Wilkins, Ryanne Duffie Documentary films capture a moment in time. They tell a story. They tell someone else’s story. They reveal truths, challenge assumptions, and often compel audiences to take action. They serve as a record of history. Ted Speaker (moderator), Jonathan Rej, Rush Hicks, Ryanne Duffie Where would film be without music? The dramatic crescendo as the unknowing character leaves the house in the dark, the melancholy vocal as the lead character drives off into the future. And where would music be without the art of film, giving images to sounds, bringing the lyrics visually alive, and introducing new audiences to music through videos? Panelists will discuss how to choose the right song for a film, how they find the music, how the music finds them. They will discuss the art of the music video and what direction to go with a particular song? And often the most important part of music in film … licensing. Who owns the songs if made for the film (scoring). How do you go about securing a particular song for a scene, what kind of license do you need? Join filmmakers, musicians, and attorneys as they discuss how music and film work together both creatively and legally. TED SPEAKER is a film and TV composer, producer, and sometimes editor and designer. He has scored, produced, and edited feature films, short films, documentaries, commercials, and national corporate campaigns.
