Welcome A warm Playhouse welcome to our spring season, packed full of creative adventures! We’re thrilled to present nationally and internationally acclaimed productions – English Touring Theatre’s Macbeth; imitating the dog’s Frankenstein; from Theatre Royal Bath, Somerset Maugham’s The Circle starring Jane Asher, Clive Francis, and Nicholas Le Prevost; and direct from Broadway, the theatrical tour de force The Kite Runner, based on Khaled Hosseini’s bestselling novel. There are laughs a plenty with Michael Frayn’s legendary comedy Noises Off and if you’re looking for something with a wow factor, look no further than Unfortunate - The Untold Story of Ursula The Sea Witch - a musically magnificent and marvellously mischievous new take on the Disney diva - it’s not a show for the faint hearted! For opera lovers, there’s English Touring Opera with a scintillating double bill Manon Lescaut and The Rake’s Progress, Oxford Opera and OperaUpClose; and last but not least some Gilbert & Sullivan’s HMS Pinafore. We’re proud to welcome back pioneering dance company Ballet Black, with a new double-bill; the dance continues with Richard Chappell Dance, Graziano Di Prima, and Ballet Central. We also see the return of the acclaimed exploration of Nina Simone’s life and work in Black Is The Color Of My Voice. There’s music from Kate Rusby, comedy from Stewart Lee and Fascinating Aïda, and circus with Okham’s Razor Tess. As always, we’re delighted to partner with Oxford University students, this time with a bold new production of Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard and we proudly welcome local companies Oxford Theatre Guild and Musical Youth Company of Oxford. Families have a glorious array of performances to choose from - in fact, no need to choose - just come to them all! After the festive delights of Dear Father Christmas and our panto Jack and the Beanstalk, we look forward to Northern Ballet’s charming introduction to dance with Tortoise & the Hare, and a gorgeous new production of the Julia Donaldson classic Charlie Cook’s Favourite Book. Don’t forget we offer weekly under-5 music sessions Hey Diddle Diddle, Youth Theatre companies, and Play in a Week holiday courses. To get an idea of the work that we create with young people, don’t miss our Young Company production of Jessica Swale’s Blue Stockings. Please let us know how your visit to The Playhouse has been via our social media channels or in person. Your feedback helps us thrive and grow as an organisation. We look forward to seeing and hearing from you soon. The OP Team

Miles Jupp:

(the Die Hard parody)

On I Bang

By Richard Marsh

Since Miles Jupp’s last tour finished at The London Palladium in 2017, he’s been in The Full Monty on Disney Plus, The Durrells and Why Didn’t They Ask Evans? as well as many episodes of Frankie Boyle’s New World Order and Have I Got News For You.

An acclaimed retelling of the classic film Die Hard from Richard Marsh - Fringe First-winner, London poetry slam champion, BBC Audio Drama Best Scripted Comedy Drama award-winner and New York cop (one of these is untrue). This joyfully funny show tours following rave reviews for its premiere at the Edinburgh Fringe and 2023 UK and USA tours.

The Guardian

Yet one sunny day in the middle of all this, he suddenly suffered a brain seizure. This led to the discovery of a tumour the size of a cherry tomato, and a rather pressing need to undergo major neurosurgery. Obviously, one doesn’t wish to make a big deal of it, but the experience has left him with a story to tell and a few things that he’d like to share with the room. So that’s exactly what he’s doing in his new show On I Bang – a tale about surprise, fear, luck, love and qualified medical practitioners.

The Circle By Somerset Maugham Starring Jane Asher, Clive Francis and Nicholas Le Prevost Directed by Tom Littler Will history come full circle? Or can one generation learn from their parents’ mistakes? Jane Asher (Alfie, Deep End) plays Lady Kitty, a society beauty who notoriously abandoned her stuffy husband Clive (Clive Francis, The Crown), and eloped with the handsome Lord Porteous (Nicholas Le Prevost, Shakespeare in Love, Testament of Youth). Thirty years later, love’s young dream has descended into non-stop squabbling. Meanwhile Clive and Lady Kitty’s son Arnold (Pete Ashmore, The Lovely Bones) faces the same marital fate, as his wife Elizabeth (Olivia Vinall) threatens to elope with the dashing Teddie Luton (Chirag Benedict Lobo). Somerset Maugham’s sparky comedy of manners was first staged in 1921 and has remained a firm favourite with audiences ever since. Maugham was among the most successful novelists and playwrights of the inter-war years with many of his novels, including The Painted Veil, Theatre, Up At The Villa and Of Human Bondage being adapted for the screen. Elégie – Rachmaninoff

The best stand-ups and sketch acts from the international circuit, do their thing for an audience of children and their families... but without the rude bits!

Lucy Parham - piano Henry Goodman - narrator

It’s just like a normal comedy club, but it’s on in the day, kids are allowed in, and there is a higher than usual chance of heckles like “why is that your face?”!

“A highlight for children... giving them a taste of some of the biggest names in comedy with the fun, rowdy feel of a real comedy club. The Guardian

A Heart in Exile Known internationally for her ‘Composer Portraits’ in words and music, pianist Lucy Parham presents Elégie to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the birth of composer and pianist Sergei Rachmaninoff. With a narrative scripted from letters and diaries, this beautiful concert chronicles a life from his youth in Russia, through to his subsequent self-imposed exile in 1917, and finally to California USA. With Russia remaining deeply rooted in his soul, cultural identity and a longing for homeland imbue his music. The concert includes many of his best-loved works for solo piano, including a selection of Preludes, Etudes-Tableaux and Moments Musicaux, some of his own transcriptions and the haunting Elégie.

Noises Off By Michael Frayn One of the greatest British comedies ever written returns to Oxford following a sell-out and triumphant West End run. Michael Frayn’s celebrated play serves up a riotous double bill, a play within a play. Hurtling along at breakneck speed, Noises Off follows the on and offstage antics of a touring theatre company as they stumble their way through the fictional farce, Nothing On. From the shambolic final rehearsals before opening night in Weston-super-Mare, to a disastrous matinee in Ashton-under-Lyne seen entirely, and hilariously silently, from backstage, before we share their final, brilliantly catastrophic performance in Stockton-on-Tees. One of the UK’s favourite actresses, Liza Goddard’s extensive stage comedy credits include Life of Riley, Communicating Doors, Season’s Greetings and Relatively Speaking. Paul Bradley is best known for playing Nigel Bates in EastEnders and Elliot Hope in Holby City. Simon Shepherd’s many credits include Peak Practice and the West End productions of Posh, The Duck House, Rapture, Art and Hay Fever. Frankenstein Inspired by the novel by Mary Shelley “Remember, that I am thy creature; l ought to be thy Adam; but I am rather the fallen angel...” A storm gathers outside as a couple pack up a room. Clothes and toys are carefully stored away in boxes and bags. Lightning flashes. Picking up a book, the woman reads aloud. It’s a story about ambition and playing God, and about what happens when we bring new life into the world. It’s also about rejection, horror and revenge. It’s the story of Frankenstein. As the couple confront their own fears, they re-create a version of Frankenstein that erupts into life as everyday objects are transformed into glaciers, a ship at sea, a dissecting room, a house on fire... The latest adaptation in a series of Gothic texts, imitating the dog and Leeds Playhouse stage a multimedia exploration of Mary Shelley’s classic novel is a psychological thriller which dares to ask the question – what is it to be human? The Pasadena Roof Orchestra

Dom Joly’s Conspiracy Tourist Tour

With an unparalleled reputation across the UK, Europe and beyond, The Pasadena Roof Orchestra has been re-creating the sounds of a golden era of music from the 1920s and 1930s to widespread acclaim for over 50 years. In this beautifully crafted new concert, the orchestra takes to the stage with a sparkling selection of its best-loved music and songs. Expect classics from the pens of Irving Berlin, Ray Noble and Cole Porter, as well as electrifying hot jazz from the likes of Fletcher Henderson and Duke Ellington.

“Just because you’re paranoid, doesn’t mean you’re not being followed!” Dom Joly has been off travelling the globe again. This time, he’s been looking into some of the strangest and weirdest conspiracy theories in existence. Now, he’s set to embark on a rather unique theatre tour, where Dom will be providing a hilarious, fascinating, and slightly anarchic guide to the wacky world of conspiracies.

Presenting the show, and putting on his top hat and tails, is the suave singer and band leader Duncan Galloway. So pack up your troubles, come on get happy, and experience an evening of superlative live music, with more than a dash of wit and humour.

Due to the extremely controversial views aired in the show, security will be at an optimum and audiences are warned that angry demonstrations are very likely – or is that just another conspiracy?!

Macbeth By William Shakespeare Directed by Richard Twyman A struggling and divided nation, tearing itself apart. So, when the Macbeths see their chance at the crown, why shouldn't they take it? As society strives to make sense of the darkness that sits inside it, how long will it take for people to fight back against the endless cycle of violence and corruption? An Oxford Playhouse Young Company production

Blue Stockings By Jessica Swale Directed by Paul Simpson Girton College, Cambridge. 1896. Four young women embark on the first year of their higher education, knowing they will never formally graduate or be recognized for their achievements. Despite their intense studying and matching their male peers across the board academically, they will leave only with the stigma of being a ‘blue stocking’ – an unnatural, educated woman. Ockham’s Razor Tess A groundbreaking adaptation of Thomas Hardy’s classic novel Tess of the d’Urbervilles. An ensemble of performers weave together Hardy’s words and the extreme physicality of circus to tell this tale of power, loss and endurance. Against a backdrop of projections, the cast wield wooden planks, climb shifting walls and move through ropes and swathes of linen to evoke the vast landscapes and interior worlds of Hardy’s Wessex. It is a story which still has extraordinary relevance for our times in its incredibly nuanced evocation of female relationships, sexual desire, consent, privilege and poverty. This retelling captures the beauty, heartbreak and yearning of the novel and draws upon the incredible strength of the circus body to create a Tess as heroic as Hardy intended. Wed 3 – Sat 6 Apr Musical Youth Company of Oxford presents

Me and My Girl Book by L Arthur Rose and Douglas Furber Music by Noel Gay Director & Choreographer Guy Brigg Musical Director Julie Todd “The happiest of musicals” The aristocratic Hareford family are seeking the legitimate heir to the family title. This turns out to be Bill, a cockney from Lambeth who loves nothing more than some rhyming slang and a party, preferably with his girl, Sally. He does his best to learn the art of being posh, but will the family ever accept him? As they try to separate him from Sally, the result can only be described as comical chaos. With hilarious characters, witty one liners and marvellous music (including Me and My Girl, The Sun Has Got His Hat On, Lambeth Walk and Leaning On A Lamp Post), this is a treat for all those who love musical comedy. Me and My Girl was a hit when it opened in London in 1937 and was then revived in the 1980s with a revised book by Stephen Fry, winning three Tony Awards. As audiences have come to expect from this award-winning group, Musical Youth Company of Oxford bring a fresh new take on this classic. You are guaranteed an evening full of smiles and laughter as MYCO bring the energy and talent for which they are celebrated to The Playhouse stage. English Touring Opera Puccini’s Manon Lescaut & Stravinsky’s The Rake’s Progress English Touring Opera bring the glittering temptations of the big city to the stage with two exciting new productions. Puccini’s Manon Lescaut is a devastating depiction of a woman wrestling with her desire for love on her own terms and the rigid double standards imposed on her by society. Jude Christian, fresh from a critically acclaimed Titus Andronicus at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse, brings her incisive direction and a sharp, poetic new translation to the production, while ETO Music Director Gerry Cornelius conducts. Igor Stravinsky’s brilliantly inventive The Rake’s Progress charts young Tom Rakewell’s journey from an unexpected inheritance to ruin at the hands of his own naivety and a mysterious new friend in a new production directed by Polly Graham and conducted by Jack Sheen. Tue 16 – Sat 20 Apr Oxford Theatre Guild presents

The Importance of Being Earnest By Oscar Wilde “The truth is rarely pure and never simple...” Best friends and fashionable young men, Algernon Moncrieff and Jack Worthing, seem to have hit upon the perfect ruse to escape their social responsibilities. They lead double lives – one in the city and one in the country. But when love enters the mix, confusion reigns. Into these choppy waters sails the formidable Lady Bracknell... Oxford Theatre Guild present Oscar Wilde’s classic comedy for the very first time – updating the action to the roaring 1920s, where the young are determined to escape the strait-laced attitudes of the previous Edwardian era and embrace freedom and frivolity. One of Oscar Wilde’s most enduringly popular plays, The Importance of Being Earnest features some of his best-loved characters, including Lady Bracknell, Miss Prism, Jack Worthing and Gwendolen Fairfax. A razor-sharp satire of snobbery and class distinctions, and an evening of hilarious misunderstandings. Tue - Thu & Sat 7.30pm Fri 8pm Sat 2.30pm Tickets from £14

Susan of Narnia

Tea & Milk

Draining the Swamp

Written and directed by Gavin Robertson Performed by Katharine Mary

By Edith Alibec

By D.R. Hill

Life doesn’t always turn out like you've imagined.

Draining the Swamp is a provocative new play, with five actors, exploring the life and activities of Fascist leader, Sir Oswald Mosley, from the 1930s to 1960s. It links Mosley’s world, and that of his controversial wife, Diana Mitford, to contemporary politicians and populist movements, with a chilling 2019 conclusion.

“Once there were four children whose names were Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy.” So begins The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, the first of C S Lewis’ seven Chronicles of Narnia ending with The Last Battle in which Aslan creates the Real Narnia, and the four children pass into it to live for eternity in happiness. Except they don’t – because one of them, Susan Pevensie, isn’t allowed. When she first went through the wardrobe, Susan was 12. Now it’s 1967, and Susan is 39... just before Christmas...

Fresh from a breakup, stuck in a weird job and having sex with randomers in search of The One™️, this is a(nother) one woman show about a(nother) woman. She’s really trying - but at a school reunion, all her peers are talking about investment banking, children and marriage. Feel like keeping her company? Edith Alibec’s bittersweet play celebrates the bravery of failing (and laughing) at life when you’ve found yourself out of place - in another country, in the wrong company, or when you just feel like you've been left behind.

CAP

British Sign Language (BSL) performances feature a BSL interpreter, who stands at the side of the stage and interprets the show for D/deaf audiences. Audio Described performances (via headphones) offer a live narration describing the action in the pauses between the onstage dialogue, for those who are blind or partially sighted. Free touch tours also accompany these performances and are a chance to explore the set before the show begins.

TT

Relaxed performances are specifically set up to be more sensitive to audiences who may benefit from a more relaxed environment, including people with autistic spectrum conditions, learning disabilities or young children. The house lights will be partially on, sound levels reduced, and audience members can come and go as they please and make noise if they want to.

R

Dementia Friendly Performances are carefully tailored for those living with dementia and their friends, family or carers, so everyone can enjoy the show in a supportive, comfortable, and relaxed environment. Adaptations include reduced volume of music when dialogue is taking place.
