About Oxford Playhouse

A Playhouse for Everyone

Since 1938, Oxford Playhouse has been at the heart of cultural life in the city and region, with a wonderfully rich heritage of live performance, drama, dance and comedy. Countless stars have played our stages – Dames Judi Dench and Maggie Smith, Sir Ian McKellen, Toby Jones, Niamh Cusack, Rosamund Pike and Ralph Fiennes.

But The Playhouse is more than a theatre. It is a charity with artistic, social and educational aims. Our Open House programme is a dynamic and wideranging outreach project, breaking down barriers to creative learning for thousands of people every year.

We work closely with some of Oxford’s inner-city schools to improve literacy, we distribute 2,500 free tickets to those who couldn’t otherwise attend, and we work with partners including Age UK and the NHS to deliver programmes for the later-in-life.

As a Patron of Oxford Playhouse you can play a vital role in supporting this work – helping us to present and produce world-class theatre on our stages; offer inspiring creative opportunities to young people and the next generation of artists; and enrich people’s lives and communities through the arts, ensuring creative adventures are available for everyone.

How our Patrons Support us

By deepening your relationship with The Playhouse as a Patron, you’ll be making a vital contribution at a time when it is most needed.

Artistic Excellence

We present and produce the very best drama, dance, music, opera, comedy, student and community productions on our stages, with audiences of over 140,000 each year. We’re passionate about creating shared experiences that are relevant to the world we live in.

Our own Playhouse productions and talent development programmes also nurture and support over 100 developing artists, creatives and writers each year.

Arts Education for Children

Our flagship creative writing project, Primary Playmaker, works directly in schools across the county to nurture young imaginations, support literacy and develop storytelling skills. Over 350 schoolchildren take part each year, with each child supported to write their own play. The

‘Not only was the trip a wonderful experience for students to see what others had produced, it also fostered a special pride amongst my students for our own school.” Head Teacher

project culminates with a showcase of selected plays performed by professional actors on the main stage to a schools audience. Every year, we also give away or heavily subsidise tickets for hundreds of children in our county’s primary and secondary schools.

Communities

We work with partners across the county to enrich people’s lives and address the social inequalities of our region through the arts. Our accessible drama workshops with KEEN, Social Thursdays for older people, work experience for young people with additional needs, and our Plays Out Tent, that plays to over 6,500 audiences in schools and community settings, are all designed to ensure that we really can be A Playhouse for Everyone!

These are just a few of the programmes of activity delivered by Oxford Playhouse. We’d love to tell you more!

If you are a UK taxpayer, making a Gift Aid donation increases the value of your gift at no additional cost to you.

I would like Oxford Playhouse to treat this and any future donations I make as Gift Aid donations until further notice. I confirm I have paid or will pay an amount of Income Tax and/or Capital Gains Tax for each tax year (6 April to 5 April) that is at least equal to the amound of tax that all charities that I donate to will reclaim on my gifts for that tax year. I understand that other taxes such as VAT and Council Tax do not qualify. I understand the charity will reclaim 25p of tax for every £1 that I give.
