Welcome
We’re delighted to share our spring season with you, bursting with inspirational performance and great entertainment.
Before we dive into all that 2025 has to offer, we hope you’ll join us for the festive tradition that is an Oxford Playhouse pantomime visit. Written and directed by Toby Hulse, Sleeping Beauty is a glorious, toe-tapping extravaganza that even features a spot of time travel! Get ready for a feel-good show with a generous sprinkling of 80s nostalgia!
In January, we are thrilled to be open the UK tour of The Shark is Broken, charting the off-screen dramas in the making of Hollywood’s original blockbuster Jaws, and starring Ian Shaw as his father Robert. Nathaniel Parker and Dame Siân Phillips star in a very “handsome double-bill” of one act plays by Terence Rattigan entitled Summer 1954, whilst Martin Shaw leads the cast as Sir Thomas More in Robert Bolt’s historical drama A Man for All Seasons
As an original co-producer, Oxford Playhouse is proud to welcome back the Olivier-Award winning Pride & Prejudice* ( *sort of), a fabulously witty and irreverent take on Jane Austen’s novel by Isobel McArthur. Ballet Black is back with a new double bill and due to huge demand, so too is Ockham Razor’s Tess - if you missed out last spring be sure to book for this stunning interpretation of Thomas Hardy’s novel. Moira Buffini’s political comedy Handbagged returns in a brand-new production, and to combat any winter blues, we have great comedy on offer throughout the season including a week of shows from Stewart Lee
There are not one, but two student produced musicals – Stephen Sondheim’s iconic Into the Woods; and the gothic thriller Jekyll & Hyde. We also proudly welcome back local companies Oxford Theatre Guild, celebrating their 70 th anniversary, Musical Youth Company of Oxford and Oxford Opera. More highlights include Kim’s Convenience, the heartwarming play that inspired the Netflix hit; Gandini Juggling with Heka which blends juggling with magic; and for families we welcome back Northern Ballet with their charming Hansel & Gretel, the perfect introduction to dance for little ones.
OP’s Young Company (ages 17 to 25) take to the stage with the groundbreaking masterpiece Our Country’s Good by Timberlake Wertenbaker; and we partner with Out of Chaos for their high-octane Macbeth, directed by our Artistic Director Mike Tweddle. The show was first developed by Mike as an Evolve Artist at OP in 2015, and following international & UK tours, we are pleased to bring it home to The Playhouse.
Looking further ahead, we’re thrilled to announce an Oxford Playhouse co-production of Breaking the Code by Hugh Whitemore, based on the book Alan Turing Enigma, and featuring new material exploring Turing’s incredible legacy in the fields of both mathematics, AI and LGBTQ+ rights.
So much to look forward to in the New Year on the Main Stage and around the corner at the BT Studio, but for now, here’s to a wonderful festive season!

The Shark is Broken
By Ian Shaw and Joseph Nixon
FADE IN: The open ocean, 1974. Filming is delayed... again. The lead actors - theatre veteran Robert Shaw and young Hollywood hotshots Richard Dreyfuss and Roy Scheider - are crammed into a too-small boat, entirely at the mercy of foul weather and a faulty mechanical co-star. Alcohol flows, egos collide, and tempers flare on a chaotic voyage that just might lead to cinematic magic... if it doesn’t sink them all.
Step aboard the Orca and into The Shark is Broken, a “profound dive behind the scenes of the making of Jaws” (The Daily Telegraph, HHHH). This Olivier Award-nominated new play is “hilariously brilliant and pure genius” raves the Sunday Express (HHHHH) and stars Ian Shaw (War Horse, Common) as his father, Robert Shaw.
Short tempers. Short circuits. 95 minutes, no intermission.
A smash hit in the West End and on Broadway, The Shark is Broken celebrates movie history and peeks at the choppy waters behind Hollywood’s first blockbuster.

“Oh, if life were made of moments, even now and then a bad one!

Into the Woods features some of the most beloved fairy tale characters as they embark on a journey to fulfil their deepest desires. But when their wishes come true, are they prepared for the consequences?

Stewart Lee vs The Man-Wulf
Oxford Playhouse patron Stewart Lee is again back by popular demand with a brand-new show. Lee shares his stage with a tough-talking werewolf comedian from the dark forests of the subconscious who hates humanity. The Man-Wulf lays down a ferocious comedy challenge to the culturally irrelevant and physically enfeebled Lee. Can the beast inside us all be silenced with the silver bullet of Lee’s unprecedentedly critically acclaimed style of stand-up?
Stewart Lee (“The world’s greatest living stand-up comedian” The Times), is in danger of being left behind. He’s approaching sixty with debilitating health conditions, his TV profile has diminished, and his once BAFTA award-winning style of stand-up seems obsolete. But can Lee unleash his inner Man-Wulf to position himself alongside comedy legends like Dave Chappelle, Ricky Gervais and Jordan Peterson at the forefront of side-splitting stadium-stuffing sh*t-posting?

Summer 1954 Table Number Seven and The Browning Version
Written by Terence Rattigan
Directed
by
James Dacre
Starring Nathaniel Parker and Dame Siân Phillips
Summer, 1954.
The atmosphere at The Beauregard Private Hotel, Bournemouth, is marked by a blend of repressed emotions and post-war gentility. Each of the staff and guests has their own reason for seeking the solace of quiet anonymity but trying to hide from the social and cultural change sweeping over the country is proving impossible.
Meanwhile, in the heart of the Midlands, the end of the school term brings to a climax the intrigues, deceptions and lies in the lives of its teachers. The ensuing implosion of classicist Andrew Crocker Harris’s career triggers the collapse of his marriage.
Britain is changing. Nothing will ever be the same again.
Terence Rattigan’s one act masterpieces Table Number Seven (from Separate Tables) and The Browning Version are paired for the first time, capturing one quietly momentous evening seventy years ago. Together, they confirm Rattigan as one of the great 20 th century chroniclers of the paradoxes of the human heart. Directed by Olivier and UK Theatre Award winner James Dacre (Four Quartets, The Two Popes and Blue/Orange), an ensemble cast will perform both plays, led by Olivier Award winner Nathaniel Parker and BAFTA winner Dame Siân Phillips

Ockham’s Razor
Tess
Following the hugely successful sold-out tour in 2024, Ockham’s Razor, return to Oxford with Tess, a groundbreaking, circus adaptation of Thomas Hardy’s classic novel Tess of the D’Urbervilles
An ensemble of performers weave together Hardy’s words and the extreme physicality of circus to tell this tale of power, loss and endurance.
Wielding wooden planks, climbing shifting walls and traversing ropes and swathes of linen the cast evoke the vast landscapes and interior worlds of Hardy’s Wessex.
It is a story which still has extraordinary relevance for our times in its evocation of female relationships, sexual desire, consent, privilege and poverty.
This retelling captures the beauty, heartbreak and yearning of the novel and draws upon the incredible strength of the circus body to create a Tess as heroic as Hardy intended.

Pygmalion
By George Bernard Shaw
Set in the bustling streets of early 20 th century London, Pygmalion tells the story of Cockney flower girl Eliza Doolittle, dreaming of a better life. Professor Henry Higgins, a brilliant but arrogant linguist bets he can transform Eliza into a ‘duchess’ by teaching her to speak properly. But as the lessons progress, both teacher and pupil discover that identity and self-worth are far more complex than mere speech and social status.
A sharp critique of the British class system, Pygmalion combines wit, humour, and social commentary, challenging audiences to reflect on the nature of transformation and the true meaning of independence. Known for inspiring the beloved musical My Fair Lady, this play invites you to ponder wouldn't it be loverly if we could all see beyond appearances.
This production by Oxford Theatre Guild breathes new life into Shaw’s beloved play, emphasising its timeless themes of self-discovery, personal growth, and the power of words. Pygmalion promises to be a memorable theatrical experience that captures the essence of Shaw’s work in a way that resonates with today’s audiences.

Award winning MAN Marcus Brigstocke thinks we might still serve some useful function. But what is it? This new tour show will resolve the entire issue once and for all (in a non-patriarchal, open minded, progressive sort of way).
DaVinci’s Vitruvian Man is the image of the ideal male form. Marcus’ Vitruvian Mango is the same, but sweeter, softer, seasonally available and, when ripe, delicately perfumed.

Mark Steel:
The Leopard in My House
Join multi award-winning, BAFTA-nominated writer and comedian Mark Steel for his new tour The Leopard in My House. The topic? His battle with throat cancer. A battle he is winning (thankfully) and which only his rapier wit could fashion a comedy tour show out of. Cancer has done nothing to dull Mark’s acute political observations or quash his “frankly bonkers” energy: you will laugh, you will cry, but you'll laugh again, and again, and again. The Leopard in My House is proof that this leftie, working-class, Radio 4 favourite truly deserves his place in the UK comedy pantheon.
Mark is best known for his critically-acclaimed BBC Radio 4 show Mark Steel’s in Town (now in its 13 th series), as well as his hit podcast What The F*** Is Going On..?. He has also written several acclaimed books, including an adaptation of his critically acclaimed stand-up show Who Do I Think I Am? for Audible.

Sara Pascoe: I Am A Strange Gloop
Have you ever been awake in the middle of the night and thought something so smart and astute that you couldn’t wait for the world to wake up so you could tell them?
This show is that thought. In that it doesn’t make much sense and is a bit weird on reflection.
Sara Pascoe is a comedian, and her children don’t sleep, and her kitchen won’t clean itself and her husband “doesn’t want to be in it”.
As seen and heard on Taskmaster, Live at the Apollo, The Great British Sewing Bee, QI, 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown, Mock the Week and co-host of Sara & Cariad’s Weirdos Book Club podcast.

Heka
Directed by Sean Gandini and Kati Ylä-Hokkala
Everything is not as it seems
Juggling and Magic are like long lost sisters. So similar and yet so different.
Gandini Juggling returns to Oxford with their new show, Heka which means the Egyptian goddess of magic. This captivating performance blurs the lines between juggling and illusion, transporting audiences to a mesmerizing realm where objects materialize, vanish, and transform. The show poses a tantalizing question: what is real, and what is simply a trick of perception?
Heka blends humour and philosophy with contemporary choreography and world-class juggling as it reimagines magic through repetition and misdirection.

By Moira Buffini
11 years of weekly, behind-closed-doors meetings, where the destiny of a nation is shaped.
Moira Buffini’s clever, funny and charming political comedy unlocks the palace door, imagining the untold conversations of two of history’s most powerful women, Margaret Thatcher and Queen Elizabeth II. Ronald Reagan, Denis Thatcher and an ensemble of familiar faces add to the biting satire and sharp humour, as the gloves come off and personalities clash.
25 years later, with both women now gone, their shadows still loom large, as this Theatre Nation Partnerships production, produced by Queen’s Theatre Hornchurch, supported by the National Theatre, explores the legacy of this divisive premiership and leaves audiences to question what they truly know about those who decide our nation’s destiny.

Reece Williams and HOME
This Kind of Black Requiem for Black Boys
This Kind of Black is the powerful new stage show from poet and musician Reece Williams
It’s about growing up in Manchester’s Moss Side in the 1990s, a stone’s throw from conflict and violence. It celebrates a community held together by prayers, warmth and humour, while mourning the tragic loss of young life. It’s about the intersection of race and class, when the media only portrays you through the lens of ‘Gunchester’.
At the heart of the show is the relationship between a father and a son, and the impact of trauma on the mental health of young Black boys across the generations.
