Who is the Oxfordshire Mind Wellbeing Service for? The Wellbeing Service is open to people over 16 in need of support with any sort of mental health problem. You do not need a referral and the service is free of charge.

How can the Wellbeing Service help me? We offer support through 4 elements of the service: Information and Options - if you’re in need of support and information, or you’re not sure where to turn to get help, we can give you the facts and the contacts you need at our county-wide sessions. Information and Options is a good place to start if you’re new to the service. Short Courses - courses can provide you with tools to look after your mental wellbeing, and skills to help you get the most out of life. There is a wide range of courses on offer, categorised by either health needs, wellbeing, arts and crafts, physical health or practical skills. Peer Support Groups - a safe, welcoming space to share activities, issues or thoughts and to meet people who may have experienced similar issues. Groups may be specifically for: men, women, parents, young people; people with shared beliefs, ethnicity or sexuality; they may be geographically based; or they may focus around an activity such as art, sports, music, walking, cooking etc. Recovery Planning - make an appointment with a member of staff to talk through your personal goals and how to reach them.

Where can I access the Wellbeing Service? Services are divided up in to three areas of Oxfordshire. The services in each area, or locality, are run by a different team. All of the service information in this booklet is organised by locality. Oxford City Covers Oxford itself. with most services mainly run from out premises in East Oxford and Cowley. Cherwell and West Oxfordshire Covers Witney, Bicester, Banbury, Chipping Norton, Carterton, Kidlington and surrounding areas. South Oxfordshire and the Vale Covers Abingdon, Didcot, Wantage, Wallingford, Thame, Henley, Faringdon and surrounding areas. 2

Frequently Asked Questions Why aren’t there as many courses on offer as there were in the previous programme? This is because we’re putting our resources in to the courses that are tried and tested so as to give people the best quality courses possible. We’re still coming up with ideas for new courses, and we expect the programme to grow with time. From September 2012, we will be running a programme of additional courses in Self Esteem, Assertiveness and Skills for Living.

I just want to know what time my local service is open! How do I find this out? We know our service is complex, this is because it is designed for lots of different people with different needs. If you want to know when during the week you can use your nearest service, and are finding this booklet difficult to navigate, go a long to an Information and Options session or phone us on 01865 247788 and a worker will happily give you a personalised timetable to suit you.

I’d like a bespoke course to be run for my organisation/group/team/club. Can you do this? Yes! We can provide a range of courses to suit your needs. Contact Jade Sullivan on 01865 263744 or email jade.sullivan@oxfordshire-mind.org.uk for details.

I like the look of one of these courses, but it’s not at a convenient time or place for me. What can I do? Give us a call or check our website! We may be running an additional course that was planned after this programme was printed. Plus, if you tell us what you want, and other people want it too, we’ll do our best to respond to the demand.

My local Mind service used to be open for more hours in the week. Why has the number of hours been reduced? We’ve expanded our service to reach more geographical areas. For example, we now run services in Faringdon, Cholsey, Bampton and Charlbury, where we previously did not run any services at all. Unfortunately this has meant we’ve had to reduce the service offered in some other areas. If you are looking for more support during the week, please call our Information Line on 01865 247788 to discuss what options are available to you, or talk to the Mind staff at your local service.

Got another question? Please give our Information Line a call on 01865 247788 9

Information from Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust

About Us Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust provides a wide range of community-focused health and social care services to people across five localities from Buckingham down to Bath. In Oxfordshire we provide community health services such as district nursing, physiotherapy and podiatry and we run eight community hospitals. We provide mental health services in Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire, as well as some mental health specialist services for Wiltshire, Bath, North East Somerset and Wales. As a Foundation Trust we want to ensure we provide caring, safe and excellent services and the support of our members helps us to do this. Becoming a Member Your experience of local health services is invaluable in helping us to improve them in the future. You may have a personal experience of one of our services, know or care for someone else who does, or you may simply have an interest in the development of health services locally. If so we would like you to be involved in the way our services are developed. You can choose to be an active member who gets involved in activities with the Trust. If you would rather support the Trust you can choose the supporter option. This means we will only contact you once a year about elections. Benefits of Membership  You can show your support to local NHS services by being a Foundation Trust Member in the ‘supporter’ category  If you want to be more involved, tick the ‘active member’ section and we will invite you to events, send you our latest news and let you know about other ways you can get involved with the Trus  You can access a wide range of NHS discounts that are normally only available to staff  You can share your views and opinions about our services to help us to improve them. We don’t expect you always to agree with us or share our views. We really want to know what you think we do well and what we could do better  You can vote for a Governor to represent you on our Members’ Council or you can stand to be a Governor yourself when we have a vacancy Things you need to know about membership  It is free to be a member. There are no costs or charges associated with your membership.  Your care or treatment will not be affected. The person treating you won’t know if you are a Member or not  We have to contact you once a year about the Governor elections but if you choose to be a supporter we won’t contact you any other time.  You can ensure your name and your membership category remain private by ticking the relevant box on the membership form How to Join There is a Membership form in this leaflet which is free to post back to us. Alternatively you can sign up on line via our website at www.oxfordhealth.nhs.uk If you’d like to find out more first, please email us at ft.community@oxfordhealth.nhs.uk phone 01865 738536, or visit our website www.oxfordhealth.nhs.uk which has a lot of information about what we do.

Mental

Health

First

Aid

Mental Health First Aid is a nationally accredited 2-day training course designed to give participants the knowledge and skills to recognise the early signs of mental health problems and support someone to seek the right help. Mental Health First Aid would benefit everyone personally and professionally, from carers and family members, to employers, to those who might support someone at risk of mental health problems. Oxfordshire Mind has funding from the NHS Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire Cluster and Oxfordshire County Council to offer the course for free and for people living or working in Oxfordshire. Over the year we are running courses open to the public that you can book on individually. Additionally, we are running courses for organisations, employers or community groups. If you would like to organise a course for a group of your staff, volunteers or services users, please contact Laura Epton on 01865 263749 or laura.epton@oxfordshire-mind.org.uk.

Five Ways to Wellbeing Simple steps to improve your mental health & wellbeing

1. connect… With people around you. With friends, family, colleagues and neighbours. Strengthening these connections will support and enrich you every day.

2. be active… Find an activity you enjoy. Go for a walk. Garden. Dance. Just step outside. Exercising at a level that suits you will make you feel good.

3. take notice… Be curious. Savour the moment, whether you are walking to work, eating lunch or talking to friends. Reflecting on your experiences will help you appreciate what matters to you.

4. keep learning… Try something new. Rediscover an old interest. Set a new challenge you will enjoy achieving such as signing up for a course, fixing a bike or cooking your favourite food.

5. give... Do something nice for a friend or stranger. Thank someone. Smile. Volunteer your time. Seeing yourself linked to the wider community can be incredibly rewarding.
