WELCOME It is in diversity that we find strength. This is clearer than ever as we enter 2018. Throughout its history the Union has been no different, even if at one point only diverse in terms of opinion. Reflecting on the words I have chosen as the epigraph of this termcard, I hope that this term the Union will act as something of a mirror to the candles that burn bright with hope, inspiration, and change. It has always been our purpose to provide a forum for these voices, and this term the Committee and I have done our utmost to ensure that we have reflected as wide a range of them as possible. The advent of globalisation means that we are more aware than ever before of the issues that affect even the most remote corners of the world. We can no longer simply sit by and watch. This term’s debates and panels look far beyond the shores of the Atlantic; from our debate on the causes of the 2008 Global Financial Crisis, for which we will welcome guest speakers from three continents, and our debate on whether we regret the Partition of India, which acts as a permanent reminder of colonial rule, to our panel on genocide, an issue all too often pertinent as shown by the current crisis in Myanmar. It is said that what determines a real leader is that they do not follow the crowd, but instead let the crowd follow them – this term’s Women’s Leadership Speaker Series
aims to shine a spotlight on the women who are true pioneers of a generation, exploring and questioning the issues that women today face, whether that be through discussing Hollywood or healthcare. As is reflected in the theme of this year’s International Women’s Day, which takes place in March, we must continue to ‘press for progress’. Leading an institution which was founded at a time when women were not even allowed to enrol for degrees at the University does, at times, feel rather surreal, but it is only through discussing the issues that women face that we can hope to further these incredible voices, and what they represent. At the end of the day, it is up to each one of you to make what you want of this platform – whether you’re a competitive debater, a fresher who’s just joined, or a finalist, I hope you’ll approach this term with curiosity and an open mind, questioning what we usually take to be the norm. It is a tremendous privilege to serve as your President, and I look forward to welcoming you back to the Oxford Union this Hilary Term.

“You’re living at a time of extremism, a time of revolution, a time when there’s got to be a change,”; Malcolm X delivered this message to a chamber of students at the Oxford Union over 50 years ago, and yet they still resonate as poignantly today as they did then. The Oxford Union has always endeavoured to re-evaluate, challenge and change mainstream discourse since its founding as a stage for free speech and debate.
I hope you have had a lovely vacation, and that you are excited for all of the opportunities 2018 will bring.
As your Librarian for this term, I sincerely look for ward to helping deliver our speaker events, which our committee has worked incredibly hard to organise, seeking to represent and give a platform to the important and influential voices of today. I hope that these events will incite in you a newfound sense of intrigue, curiosity and momentum, whether that comes from putting yourself for ward to give a debate floor speech or even just to listen with an open mind. The Union’s library itself embodies the impetus of historical movement and innovation, with the Pre-Raphaelite brotherhood having made their mark through our beautiful ceiling murals - as a tranquil location to study, the librar y is an area I will ensure is always well-stocked and kept up to date this term. We have been hard at work in the Treasurer’s Office over the past few weeks, and have focused on developing relationships with businesses that have recently opened in Oxford, particularly at the Westgate shopping centre. We have new discounts for members at a range of shops, restaurants, and bars as part of the Treasurer’s Treats programme. I am particularly excited to announce the first ever online discount for members, helping you make the most of your membership even when you are not in Oxford. The ball will be the social highlight of this term: with the theme of ‘Mediterranean Voyage’, expect Moroccan lanterns, salsa and shishas in Fourth Week. The Oxford Union was established to protect and uphold the principle of free speech, and debating remains at the heart of the society today. Debates are held on Thursday evenings during term on a variety of different topics and are often the highlight of the week. The timings for debates are as follows: 19:45 - Emergency Debate: The motions seek to address topical issues and are set by the Consultative Committee each week. 4
20:30 - Main Debate: Featuring high-profile speakers from around the world, our main debate motions are decided by the committee over the vacation; details can be found on the pages which follow. Members’ participation in debates is very much encouraged. A ballot will be released each week via email and our Facebook page for members to attend dinner with our guest speakers.

A CALL FOR REFORM: ABORTION RIGHTS IN THE DEVELOPED WORLD President Trump’s recent attack on abortion laws and the continuing restrictions on abortions in Europe highlight that now is the time to have a frank discussion about abortion reform in the developed world. As the Campaign to Repeal the Eighth rages on in Ireland, we aim to question and challenge the restrictions on reproductive rights in the 21st centur y. Ilyse Hogue President of NARAL Pro-Choice America, Hogue is the leader of America’s biggest abortion rights action league. Ann Furedi Chief Executive of the British Pregnancy Advisory Service (BPAS), Furedi is the leader of the British charity that supports reproductive rights by the provision of contraception and safe, affordable abortions. Amanda Mellet Mellet is a human rights activist, and is the first woman ever to be paid compensation from the Irish government for having to leave the countr y to obtain an abortion. Sinead Kennedy Kennedy is the co-founder and Secretary of the Campaign to Repeal the Eighth, and is a prominent activist for reproductive rights in the Republic of Ireland.

This event seeks to explore the blossoming nature of cultural and physical diversity in fashion. We invite industry experts, fashion figures and models from different backgrounds to discuss, among other things, where the trend towards diversity has come from, its determining factors, its longevity, and how the lack of diversity has affected underrepresented groups. Munroe Bergdorf Bergdorf is a British transgender model, notable for her social activism on issues around diversity and race, particularly after being controversially fired by L’Oreal for her remarks about the Charlottesville attacks. Kirsten Haglund Former Miss America and lead anchor of Styrk Morning Briefing, Haglund is a political analyst and public speaker, raising awareness for women's mental health issues, and discussing female empowerment. Deddeh Howard Howard is a Liberian model notable for her campaign, Black Mirror, recreating iconic fashion campaigns and photographs with herself as a model of colour.

Dr. Alaa Murabit, a Libyan-Canadian medical doctor and women’s rights activist, is one of the 17 Global Sustainable Development Goal Advocates appointed by the UN Secretary General and a UN High-Level Commissioner on Health Employment & Economic Growth. After being accepted into medical school at the age of 15, Murabit turned to advocacy and founded an NGO focusing on empowering women caught in conflict in her native Libya. In 2017, Murabit was named as a Forbes 30 Under 30.

COMPETITIVE DEBATING The Union’s competitive debating squad has a well-established reputation as one of the most successful in the world, having won the World and European University Championships on multiple occasions. Over the Christmas vacation, Oxford were crowned world champions in the English as a Second Language Category at the World Universities Debating Championship in Mexico, and two of our speakers were ranked in the overall top ten speakers. We were the only university to have all of our teams and judges advance to the knock-out rounds. We offer workshops and coaching squads for all ability levels, whether you are a complete novice or an experienced competitor. Our beginners’ workshops run on Sunday evenings from 19:30. Open for all, they consist of a 15 minute workshop followed by a practice debate. Feel free to dip in and out, and we encourage you to get involved with these even if you have not debated so far.
We send teams to a number of competitions each term and information on how to apply will be included in the mailing list. Travel expenses are paid, and we have sent teams to places ranging from Texas to Copenhagen. Our annual debating competition for schools is running this term, so do consider signing up to judge one of the regional rounds that take place throughout the country and the term, or Finals Day on the 10th of March. This is a great way to give back to younger debaters, who are always keen to find out more about Oxford in general. WOMEN'S PUBLIC SPEAKING WORKSHOPS This term, we are re-introducing women’s public speaking workshops, open to all self-identifying female members and non-binary members. The workshops will be run by some of our most experienced female debaters. The experience of speaking in front of audiences ranging from small panels to packed lecture halls means that our workshop leaders will be able to share relatable techniques to improve your confidence in your public speaking. These workshops are designed to help you improve a range of transferable skills
- from constructing a clear presentation speech to making your delivery as effective as possible - that will be helpful for those interested in debating, as well as anyone presenting academic papers or pitching professional ideas. Further details about timings will be advertised shortly via email and our Facebook page. The sessions are designed to be casual and accessible to those with no experience of public speaking or debating, and we look forward to welcoming you.

Participate in Debates Debates usually take place on Thursday evenings, and are held in the Chamber. They cover a range of subjects and are a great opportunity to challenge speakers as well as to voice your opinions on topical issues. You can participate by giving a speech in the Emergency Debate (starting at 19:45) or a floor speech during the Main Debate (starting at 20:30). For those interested in honing their debating skills, debating workshops are held in the Union every Sunday at 19:30. Run for Election Elections for Officership and other positions are held on the Friday of 7th Week each term. Being on committee gives members the opportunity to invite speakers, organise debates, and take responsibility for the overall functioning of the Society. Candidates are required to make a number of speeches, depending on the position for which they are

THE MEMBERS' BAR Few places in Oxford boast the comfort and affordability of our Members' Bar. Perfect for a quiet coffee, a light lunch or an evening drink, it is a place where members and their guests can enjoy high quality food and beverages at student prices, with a 25% members' only discount. Our lunchtime menu boasts a delicious selection of homemade options, and we have introduced a new Brunch Menu on Thursdays!

The Members’ Bar is decorated with memorabilia from past guests, and you never know which of our speakers might choose to drop by while visiting the Union. Following each debate, the Bar is where the President will read out the result of the vote after everyone has left the Chamber. This term we will also be hosting at least two pub quizzes; with a number of exciting prizes for the winners and runners up, these are always a highlight of the term.

GUEST POLICY Guest Policy Members are allowed to bring up to three guests to an event, as long as: 1. The guest is not themselves eligible for membership of the Oxford Union. 2. The guest pays a ÂŁ10 fee on the door. 3. All members who wish to attend the event have already taken their seats. Events will be made exclusive to members when there is a security risk. Given (3) above, it is unlikely that there will be space for guests at an extremely popular event. It is also a guest policy that the same guest must not attend more than 3 times in one term.

It’s been just under 2 years since I first joined Union committee – whilst in my mind it’s flown by, I know I have countless people to thank. There are no shortcuts to any place worth going, and my family, friends, and those I have worked with at the Union, my Officers, members of staff and on committee, have not only helped and inspired me along the way, but have made my journey one worth pursuing. It is certainly the case that no one is so strong that they do not have to look to the strengths of others – I will forever be grateful not only to my team within the walls of Frewin Court, but those I am lucky to be close to; I hope you all know how much of an impact you’ve had, and will continue to have on me, in your own different ways.
