Welcome When you have a look through this termcard, you will undoubtedly get a sense of what it means to be a member of the Oxford Union: the speakers and the socials, seven debates and a black-tie ball, and facilities ranging from academics to alcohol. I have spent some of my time as its President reflecting upon what I think the meaning of this place as a whole might be, and – in particular – upon how that relates to ideals of change, hope and justice. Senator Robert F. Kennedy spoke in our chamber just a year before his untimely death. Soon after his address, he wrote that “the world’s hope … is to rely on youth – not a time of life, but a state of mind, a temper of the will, a quality of the imagination, a predominance of courage over timidity, of the appetite for adventure over the love of ease.” This appetite is what brings so many speakers here to Oxford. Many of them have changed the world for the better; some, perhaps, for the worse; some only bring an aspiration to change. Each recognises the potential of engaging with and inspiring students; and I hope that you, too, will come to realise the potential of engaging with these guests, their experiences, and – above all else – their ideas. Indeed, over the last year alone, our members had the opportunity to hear Bernie Sanders espouse hope in the face of the Trump Administration, Dustin Lance Black share his experiences of growing up gay, four mothers of victims discuss police brutality on our Black Lives Matter panel, and so many other visionaries in
their fields. These events can directly and dramatically bring about change to the perspectives of members and visitors alike. In my time here, I’ve seen people moved to tears by Robin Wright or moved to action by John Kerry; made to laugh by Ricky Gervais and made to ‘feel the love’ by Sir Elton John. Whether as a result of spending time chatting to those luminaries, of taking on challenges I’d never anticipated, or of working alongside some of the most remarkable people I’ve ever met, the difference I’ve noticed in myself (and my friends) between starting out here and now is immense. As President, working with my committee, it falls to me to pass that opportunity to all of you in the coming term. Ultimately, although it's easy to dwell upon grand notions of changing the world, don't forget that progress is almost always slight – but no less meaningful for that. As Senator Kennedy also wrote, “few will have the greatness to bend history itself, but each of us can work to change a small portion of events”. I urge you to approach the Oxford Union and this term with an appetite for adventure, stand up for an ideal, and see how you can effect change.

Welcome to the most exciting term of the year at the Oxford Union – Michaelmas. Please come and join us for some truly special events which will take place against the backdrop of darkening days, autumn leaves, and our wonderful libraries.
Welcome to Oxford after what I hope was a wonderful and enjoyable summer!
We are part of a generation in which nearly everything can be found online. However, I have found over the past year that awe and inspiration only happen when you’re part of the experience. Pushing myself to speak up, to ask the question, or even to attend an event that I didn’t expect to be interested in has made all the difference. The Union is certainly a place where you get out what you put in, and you often leave an event with an unexpected sense of perspective. We have worked hard to provide an incredible series of speakers from a diverse range of backgrounds, and I’d like to give a heartfelt thank you to the committee for creating this term – you should be proud. My job title may leave you wondering as to whether you’ll find me stacking books in the beautiful Old Library – unfortunately not. But you will find me at Library Committee, which I’d encourage you all to get involved with. It is the perfect way to get to grips with the Union, and to see how it operates as a centre for open-minded discussion.

The Treasurer’s Office has worked hard during the vacation to ensure that the Union’s finances remain in good health, and that through new and renewed corporate sponsorships with leading employers, we are able to secure the visits of the distinguished speakers outlined in the following pages. I hope that you will make the most out of your membership and take advantage of some of our exciting and exclusive partnerships – for instance, you will find a card enclosed outlining our Treasurer’s Treats, which includes discounts at restaurants, bars, shops and cafés all over town. You will also find a list of floor prizes for each debate, and I hope these will encourage you to raise your voice and participate in the discussion – every winner and runner-up will receive an exclusive Ede & Ravenscroft scarf, on top of other prizes which range from a one night stay at a 5-star hotel to a 3-course dinner for two. Starting this Michaelmas, an additional fire escape in the Chamber has significantly increased seating capacity, so that even more members can attend our most popular events.
I really hope to see you here in the coming weeks and that you enjoy the term ahead. Lastly, my main priority is making sure all members have a positive experience, so feel free to reach out to me if you have any queries or concerns!

Secretary’s Welcome A warm welcome to members old and new! I hope you share my excitement for what is set to be a fantastic Michaelmas term. Your committee has worked hard over the vac to bring you a term filled with speakers and social events, and I hope that the programme will spark your enthusiasm. Managing the Union’s busy social life is a particular responsibility of the Secretary, and I am delighted to unveil another packed term. Our Michaelmas Ball, by any measure a highlight of the social calendar, has the theme ‘Olympus’. We have been liberal with the opportunities for self-indulgence and it looks to be a hugely enjoyable night, so keep an eye out for tickets going on sale! Elsewhere, we have combined old and new for a term of exciting events. The Wine and Cheese Social is back by popular demand, and is balanced by our ‘Into the Movies’ Social. As ever, our Pub Quizzes will take place in the Union bar throughout the term, and always promise an entertaining evening. It has been a great pleasure to make these events happen, and I am very grateful to all those on committee who have supported me, and especially to you, the members, for coming along and making them worthwhile. DEBAT The Oxford Union was established to protect and uphold the principle of free speech, and debating remains at the heart of the society today. Debates are generally held on Thursday evenings during term on a variety of different topics and are often the highlight of the week. The timings are as follows:

7.45pm – the Emergency Debate. The motions seek to address topical issues and are set by the Consultative Committee each week. 8.30pm – the Main Debate. Featuring highprofile speakers from around the world, our main debate motions are decided by the committee over the vacation; details can be found on the pages which follow.
Members’ participation in debates is very much encouraged. A ballot will be released every week (via email and Facebook) for members to attend dinner with the guest speakers. In the Main Debate, points of information can be offered to guests during their speeches, and time is also reserved for members to give short floor speeches before the final speaker on either side.
There are exciting prizes for the best floor speakers in the Emergency Debate and Main Debate each week, including dinner at the Randolph and an overnight stay in the Old Bank Hotel.

‘True love’ remains sought after in modern relationships, perpetuated through its ubiquity in film and literature. This ideal is increasingly challenged by the rise of ‘hookup culture’ and a broadening of attitudes beyond stereotypical monogamous love. Is true love now an outdated relic of a bygone era, or does it still have a place in the modern world?

We Have Sacrificed Our Liberty for a False Promise of Security
With the threat of terror at critical levels, approaches such as ‘nothing to hide, nothing to fear’ are increasingly normalised within national security policies. The NSA scandal in 2013 revealed widespread monitoring of personal data, while many argue that ‘Prevent’ legislation has had a chilling effect upon academic freedom. By limiting civil liberties such as the right to privacy and the freedoms of speech, expression and movement, have we truly become more secure?

The global surge of populism has been fuelled by the incendiary claims of the movement’s charismatic leaders, capturing voters with a narrative often driven by thinly-veiled xenophobia and commitments to “drain the swamp.” Yet across the world, populist leaders are frequently accused of betraying their supporters once they take office, unable to deliver on the bold promises on which their rhetoric is built. Do they truly overhaul the establishments they decry?

The Oxford Union hosts world leaders from virtually every field, and each term we aim to bring you unique and influential speakers from all walks of life. This term is a particularly notable one - not only do we believe that there will be something for everyone in our packed programme, but we are also delighted to announce the completion of an additional fire door in our historic chamber. This has allowed us to significantly increase the capacity of the chamber, enabling more members than ever before to attend our most popular speaker events. Indeed, please do make use of our open period which runs from October 2nd until October 19th, when you can attend any of our events with just your University ID to gain exposure to the wide range of speakers we are hosting in the first three weeks of term.
It should be noted, however, that one of the challenges inherent to inviting and hosting high calibre speakers is that their schedules can change at short notice. In the rare situation in which this occurs we do everything we can to rearrange the event for a different date, and ensure that members are given adequate notice of these changes or cancellations. Where speakers are listed as having their event's ‘Date and Time to be Confirmed’, we are still finalising the exact timings within the upcoming term. As soon as the precise time of the event in question is confirmed, we will immediately inform all members via our website and social media as well as on notices on the Union's premises.

Zach Quinto Actor and Producer
Having most notably starred as Spock in the reboot of the Star Trek universe, Zachary Quinto has become integral to one of the most iconic franchises in history, picking up seamlessly from the late Leonard Nimoy. A Primetime Emmy nominee, he has also starred in numerous hit television series, including American Horror Story: Asylum. He is an active campaigner for LGBTQ+ rights, having described these as “bleak and dangerous” times for LGBTQ+ people.

The American economist and author is a leader in sustainable development and the fight against poverty. He is currently serving as Special Adviser to the UN Secretary General on the Sustainable Development Goals and was director of the Earth Institute at Columbia University until 2016. Sachs has been twice named among Time Magazine’s 100 most influential world leaders, and has advised governments and international organisations from the Americas, Europe, Asia, Africa and the Middle East on economic strategy.

American fashion designer Marc Jacobs has been one of the most prolific influences in the industry, most notable for his daring designs and enthralling visual narrative. He was the creative director of Louis Vuitton until 2014, and now focuses on his own label. As a philanthropist and activist, Jacobs raises awareness for melanoma with his incredibly successful project, ‘Protect The Skin You’re In’. Appointed this year as the first black editor-in-chief of British Vogue, Edward Enninful’s meteoric rise through the fashion world began when he was made fashion director of i-D magazine at just 18 years of age. His edgy elegance and promotion of diversity in fashion has led to his involvement with W magazine and both American and Italian Vogue, where he was the creative direction behind the monumentally successful 2008 ‘Black Issue’.

Senator Mike Lee
US Senator for Utah One of the Senate’s youngest and most ardently conservative members, Senator Lee is an outspoken proponent of fiscal responsibility, individual liberty, and constitutionally limited government. He recently gained notoriety for his controversial novote on Obamacare repeal, effectively sinking an important version of the Republicans’ bill. He serves on the Senate’s Judiciary and Energy committees and, since the 114th Congress, as Chairman of the Senate Republican Steering Committee.

Composer for The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit Trilogies Howard Shore is one of today’s most prominent composers and his musical renderings of J.R.R. Formula One World Champion The reigning Formula One World Champion, and one of the most consistent performers on the Formula One stage for the past decade, Nico Rosberg is known for his aggressive driving style which makes him stand out from his racing peers. He has driven for both Williams and the highly competitive Mercedes team, and has achieved an outstanding 23 wins. Since his retirement, he remains one of the most celebrated names in racing history.

1st Kevin Rudd
China, America and Europe: What sort of future global order can we really build? The Prime Minister of Australia from 2007 to 2010 and again in 2013, Kevin Rudd is best known for delivering a national apology to Indigenous Australians for the “stolen generations” and for his leadership of Australia during the 2008 financial crisis. Since leaving Parliament, Rudd has held senior roles within a range of organisations and educational institutions, including serving as a member of the World Economic Forum’s Global Agenda Council on China and as Senior Fellow with the Harvard Kennedy School of Government.

Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court Widely praised for her strong commitment to the advancement of human rights for women and children, Fatou Bensouda has served as the Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court for the past five years. Among Time Magazine’s 100 most influential people in the world, Bensouda has previously served as Gambia’s Minister of Justice and as a Legal Adviser for the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda.

1st President Tarja Halonen Former President of Finland
Tarja Halonen served as the first female President of Finland from 2000 until 2012. Her profound interest in human rights and equality has shaped her career since her appointment as chairperson of Finnish LGBT rights organisation, Seta, in the 1980s. Halonen is a member of the Council of Women World Leaders, an international network for collective action on issues of critical importance to women, and was listed by Forbes as among the 100 Most Powerful Women in the world previously.

Trump's Former White House Communications Director During his tenure as the shortest-serving White House Communications Director in history, ‘The Mooch’ provoked frequent controversy in the national media. A former Goldman Sachs investment banker, Scaramucci threatened “to fire everybody” in the White House communications base before the now-infamous phone call with a New Yorker journalist heralded an end to his role.

MEMBERS' INFO Competitive Debating The Union’s competitive debating squad has a well established reputation as one of the most successful in the world, having won the World and European University Championships on multiple occasions. Whether you are a complete novice or an experienced debater, there is a Union workshop to help you improve and compete at the highest level. Our workshops run on Sunday evenings at 7.30. Open for all, they consist of a 15 minute workshop followed by a practice debate. Feel free to dip in and out. We send teams to a number of competitions each term; information on how to apply will be included in the mailing list. Travel expenses are paid, and we have fielded teams to places including Texas, Paris and Copenhagen.
It's never too late to get involved with debating. Whether you are looking to compete or to attend workshops, the Union offers opportunities for members of all abilities and all levels of experience. We encourage you to get involved with these even if you have not debated so far. This term, the Oxford IV is taking place at the Union on 10-11 November, and will welcome speakers from all over the world. We will issue tickets to people in the queue on a first-come, first-serve basis in order to prevent queue jumping and to inform members of when capacity has been reached
Events will be made exclusive to members when there is a security risk. Given (3) above, it is unlikely that there will be space for guests at an extremely popular event. It is also a guest policy that the same guest must not attend more than 3 times in one term. Queues at the Union Members can get into the vast majority of events without queuing for more than 30 minutes. After the installation of an additional fire-escape in our historic chamber this summer - enabling us to significantly increase the capacity - we expect that this will make queues very rare.
We do this in order to address the access implications and other difficulties that queuing brings. All tickets in such cases are free to all members, and are issued with your membership number and only valid upon presentation of the correct membership card. Transfers of such tickets between members will render the ticket void.

How to Get Involved Participate in Debates
Apply for an Appointed Position
Debates usually take place on Thursday evenings, and are held in the Chamber. They cover a range of subjects and are a great opportunity to challenge speakers as well as to voice your opinions on topical issues. You can participate by giving a speech in the Emergency Debate (starting at 7.45pm) or a floor speech during the Main Debate (starting at 8.30pm). For those interested in honing their debating skills, debating workshops are held in the Union every Sunday at 7.30pm.
Applications for Michaelmas Term's appointed positions open in 7th Week of this term. Positions allow you to invite speakers and arrange debates, improve access and representation, manage press relations, and help fundraise for the Society. Attend Committees All Union committees are open for members to attend and observe. If you are interested in becoming a committee member, please email the relevant committee Chair.
Run for Election Elections for Officership and other positions are held on Friday, 7th Week of each term. Being on committee gives members the opportunity to invite speakers, organise debates, and help take responsibility for the overall functioning of the Society. Candidates are required to make a number of speeches, depending on the position for which they are running, and nomination packs can be picked up in the General Office from Wednesday, 5th Week. The deadline for nominations is Friday of 6th Week. For more information, contact the Returning Officer at ro@oxford-union.org.

The Oxford Union
The Library The Old Library is a well-stocked and spacious library open to all members. It is adorned with some of the world's most famous Pre-Raphaelite murals, painted by artists including William Morris and Dante Gabriel Rossetti. The adjoining Poetry Room is a true hidden gem, tucked away and perfectly quiet for independent study. There are a number of other study spaces in the Union, from the Goodman Library to the Gladstone, Morris, and TV Rooms, and if you have any comments about them or the libraries, a suggestions book can be found in the Old Library.

The Members’ Bar is decorated with memorabilia from past guests, and you never know which of our speakers might choose to drop by while visiting the Union. Following our debates, meanwhile, the Bar is where the President will read out the result of the vote after everyone has left the Chamber. This term we will also be hosting at least two pub quizzes; with a number of exciting prizes for the winners and runners up, these are always a highlight of the term.

The Fellowship was started, 22 years ago, to create future generations of leaders for our companies. Fellows tend to be intellectually curious people who are motivated by the challenges of marketing communications and by the prospect of working at the confluence of art and business. They spend three years on the Program: in each year they work in a different WPP company, in a different marketing communications discipline and, usually, on a different continent. Long-term prospects within a WPP company are excellent, with many former Fellows now occupying senior management positions.
