WASSAIL HOLIDAY RECIPE FROM THE KITCHEN OF KARLA HALEY
Ingredients:
1 gallon apple cider
1 teaspoon nutmeg
2 cups orange juice
1 orange, sliced
1 cup lemon juice
½ cup Calvados brandy, optional
½ cup sugar
2 teaspoons cinnamon
1 teaspoon cloves
This time of year as the leaves begin to change color, the air is crisper, it reminds me of a favorite hot beverage Wassail. It has long been a part of our fall & holiday tradition that both kids & adults can enjoy. It’s the perfect beverage to warm you up!
Makes: 8 servings of 2/3 cup each Prep Time: 5 minutes Cook Time: 30 minutes Total Time: 35 minutes
Instructions: 1) Mix juices, sugar and seasonings together. If making Adult version, add the brandy at this point to make the alcoholic wassail. 2) Slowly bring to a boil in a large saucepan or pot. Boil for 1 minute. 3) Reduce heat and simmer for 30 minutes. 4) Serve hot with sliced oranges floating in the punch bowl.
Tips & Notes The cider can be made a day ahead to steep. Just reheat when ready to serve. Did you know? It takes 36 apples to create 1 gallon of apple cider, which makes you appreciate it that much more.
Fresh non-alcoholic apple cider from a local apple orchard or cider mill is best, but you can substitute with store-bought ciders available year-round as well.
Oranges studded with cloves are also known as pomanders, which are a winter
holiday favorite. They are not only used in a variety of holiday and winter cocktails, but they have a history of being used as winter home decor and natural seasonal air fresheners.

I’m Lindsay Melander, interior style consultant and owner of the interior design consulting agency Constructing Character. Grapevine wreath Open-weave ribbon Real or artificial floral stems
Grapevine wreaths function as a great base for this DIY because they are easy to work with—you can stick branches and flowers in them without adhesive. They also have an organic look that pairs nicely with the current season. You’ll be layering different florals and colors on your wreath so choose an open-weave ribbon and an array of seasonal floral stems that compliment each other in size and texture. My go-to colors for fall are golden yellows and burnt reds and oranges. For added depth, try some greens or a pop of purple.

Use a door hanger or Command Utility Hook to hang your wreath on any door, window, or wall. And voilà, it's just that easy! Happy holidays!

[1] Wrap the ribbon around the lower half of the wreath. Tuck the ribbon corners into the wreath itself to secure them. [2] Add your longest floral stems to both ends of the ribbon. Point them up and away from the center of the wreath and make them relatively symmetrical. [3] Continue to layer the smaller, fuller stems until you reach the bottom, middle of your wreath. [4] Gather any remaining flowers together at the bottom of the wreath to create an anchor point.
