Urban Mold

The project will look to give students an opportunity to address the dynamic interaction of kinetic entities within static urban patterns, through the means of data capture, comparative data analysis and translation of data into ‘dynamic’ design tools. Students will be asked to record a series of journeys through Manchester’s urban arterial routes, with a focus on catagorising various ‘types’ of movement, establishing an understanding of their interaction and cross‐connectivity (within the context of the physical urban condition). The result, will be a series of analogue design tools to inform a position/response to the configuration of the urban. Although there is the potential for digital models to be generated during the course of this workshop, it is our intention to produce computational models via analogue media. (see Frei Otto & Gaudi).
