VITALITY AT DUPONT

A mixed-use building concept was designed at 1 Dupont Circle NW in Washington, DC to create a live-work typology. The 90ft building consists of eight levels, with two levels below-grade for parking. There is commerical space in the lower four levels that is used for amenities and workspace. The upper levels are residential spaces. There is a separation in the lower levels to create a private entrance for the building’s residents. The design concept was to keep live and work separate yet accessible. Each block of the building mass encompasses a different space type. The lower block is mostly dedicated to amenities for both the residents and the commmunity. The middle block serves as mostly workspace with access to an outdoor area to decompress. The upper block is solely residential with two rooftop decks for its residents.

H ST COMMUNITY CENTER

A 2-Story community education and services center was designed for the H St Corridor of D.C. The project site is located at 1114 & 1116 H St NE, in the middle of the vibrant corridor. The program of the community center includes a small classroom, a meeting space, a cafe, and an arcade. The building is mainly red brick to fit the context of the site with a curtain wall front facade shaded by vertical wood louvers. The integration of the wood louvers is meant to bring in an organic element into the facade while casting scattered sunlight into the building. The backyard of the site hosts a community garden that can be viewed from the inside of the building and accessed through the first level. The community garden is encompassed by bushes on three sides to fence in the area without using a solid barrier to separate the area from the community.

RHODE ISLAND AVE NE

RHODE ISLAND SYNAGOGUE

A scared space was designed for 616 Rhode Island Ave NE and based on site context, a synagogue was chosen as the new place of worship. The program of the synagogue includes adminitsrative spaces, such as offices and conference rooms, as well as rooms specific to the religion. ARCHITECT’S STUDY

A backyard study was designed for an architect of choice. Christopher Tucker of MOD4 Arhcitecture was selected as the client and the study used his designs as precedence. The two-level study has a rooftop terrace that can only be accessed on the second floor, which is the office. The model is of the whole site and includes landscaping.

16 17 Fall 2019 Basic Design & Comm I

UDC School of Health Sciences

The University of the District of Columbia’s Bertie Backus campus is to be turned into their School of Health Sciences. The campus is located at 5171 South Dakota Ave NE, near Fort Totten. Before entering the design process, a site analysis was conducted by myself and some peers. For the group analysis, I created comprehensive graphics that detail the sun and wind patterns of the site. My design goal is to create a space that bridges the existing resisdential community to South Dakota Ave and the new development across the street, while inviting the community to interact. Project is in progress.

This ceramic dish was made using a slab and coil. The shape and glazing of the piece were made to reflect a pool. The coil used as the walls of the dish is reminiscent of a pool floaty.
