UNIVERSITY OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA SCHOOL OF HEALTH SCIENCES
Pamela Medrano-Otero Studio VI Sp23The University of the District of Columbia’s School of Health Sciences is located at the site where the previous community college for the university was at 5171 South Dakota Ave NE. The entire block along South Dakota Ave NE, from Galloway St NE to Hamilton St NE, is the site for this proposed project. The design goal for the project was to bridge the gap between the residential areas to the north and east of the site, to the new development on the west, across South Dakota Ave NE. Along with speaking to the park area that is to the south, across Galloway St NE. The butterfly-shaped nature of the building welcomes both the quiet residences, as well as the busy arterial street. The site was designed for occupants and residents of the area to interact with while creating interest in the building. The exterior of the building is wood paneling on cold form with brick veneer to compliment the residential buildings as well as the surrounding environment. The rotunda is a fritted glazing system to control lighting while creating some privacy. The wings of the rotunda on the SW facade sport copper-colored aluminum vertical louvers to control lighting and ensure occupants’ thermal comfort. In the interior, departments within the School of Health Sciences are situated in suites for occupant wayfinding. Related departments are located on the same floor to encourage community, along with common spaces in the central area of each floor.
