10,000 Tickets and Counting: P1 Group Tool Shop Feeds Fab and Field Work

Did You Know? •

P1 Group has a crane truck. Associates may look at the truck schedule on the Hub any time. • There are 11 delivery trucks: pickups, 1- and 2-ton stake bed trucks, trailers, + crane truck • In just this past year, warehouse vehicles have driven 256,814 miles making deliveries and pickups, NOT including the warehouse associates in Las Vegas, St. Joe and Wichita. • At any given time, the tools you see in Lawrence represent only about 1/4 of the total inventory. BY THE NUMBERS: • 76 ladders in stock • 8 Miller Bobcat gas welders • 330 18V drills* • 305 18V ¼” impacts* • 25 rigid press tools* *purchased Jan. 2017-Oct. 2018 numbers don’t include tools currently out on jobs

On October 5, the P1 Group Tool Shop celebrated ticket order #10,000. The tool shop started doing business out of the merged tool department in Lawrence on October 5, 2015. Whatever anyone in the fab shops or field may need to perform work, from batteries and hand tools to welding machines and Victaulic grooving machines, the tool shop is designed to be the onestop-shop for those needs. “All fabrication and freight is housed here. We bring the tools, fabrication and freight to the field so they can stay on the job and get the job done,” Ben Gannaway, Warehouse Operations Manager, said regarding the Lawrence warehouse space. “We carry all the tools each trade needs to go out and do a job,” Ben said. “If we don’t have it and the need is justified, we’ll get it.” The warehouse team has honed the process of procuring and returning tools to run, well, like a well-oiled machine. There are 12 full-time employees representing two Teamster Locals, IBEW Electrical Expediter and non-bargaining employees as well. Laborers are also used to help out when needed, helping with

tasks like cleaning tools or putting them away. Request tickets for tools can range from one item to six pages of items. “Everything that goes out or comes back goes on a ticket,” Ben explained. The tickets are then scanned into the system so project managers can easily go into the LINK to see what has been ordered out, what has been returned, etc. Efficiency is paramount in the process, and requests go into a queue where they are ranked by urgency. Schedules play a major role in that efficiency: when fabrication or tools are scheduled for delivery, that truck will most likely pick up whatever tools are no longer needed on the job site for return. “We may send a truck to five different job sites before it comes back,” Ben said. Ben said P1 field associates are very good about using and returning tools efficiently, even when there are multiple trades working at a jobsite. Ben also noted most competitors and colleagues in the industry do not have anything close to the P1 Group tool department/warehouse space or capabilities, especially not under one roof. 

The Checkered Louvers (4)

The Arch Metal team does a lot of work in Orlando, Florida, with Disney among their clientele. A3 is the third parking garage at Disney Springs the team has completed within the last five years.

There are two on the north and two on the south elevations of the garage. Each 60’x65’ element holds 24 custom fabricated louvers. There are 12 open and 12 closed lovers in each bank to give a shuttered appearance. These are fabricated from 2x4x.250 aluminum tube super structures and the louvers are constructed from 3x12x.390 aluminum channel with 2x10 custom extruded tube with integral screw bosses.

The $6 million A3 Parking Garage project included 141,505 sq ft of aluminum façade in four elements. • • • • • • •

Meet Cindy Barnett When Operations Coordinator Cindy Barnett came on board last spring, she brought her quirky, fun, upbeat vibes to P1 Group’s Topeka office. Cindy reminds us all that in addition to a positive attitude and getting the job done, we must remember not to take life too seriously. If you haven’t had the pleasure of speaking to Cindy, it’s your loss. With an advertising and sales support background spanning well over 20 years, Cindy is no stranger to customer service and making people feel special. And now Topeka service techs rely on her to get needed parts that keep projects moving efficiently. “Parts quotes is my main job, but it’s also my love. Sales and support are my gig,” Cindy said. But like most of us, Cindy jumps in where needed: special projects, working with the shop, prepping for big meetings and backing up dispatch. Prior to applying, Cindy knew a couple P1 Group associates over the years whose experiences gave her a positive impression of the company. “I always wanted to work at P1 because I could tell they really care about families,” Cindy said. Cindy appreciates the family vibe at P1 Group because her own is so close, personally and geographically. After 40 years of marriage, to her

high school sweetheart, three children, and now seven grandchildren, the Lawrence, KS, resident says she’s “doing things backward”. “While everyone was out having fun, I was raising a family. Now that’s done, I get to do a lot of fun things like travel, gardening and vintage shopping,” Cindy said. When she found herself in need of a career change, Cindy eagerly answered a P1 Group ad for a project coordinator. “I saw the ad and thought, I can do that job,” she said. Cindy was actually called in to interview for a Topeka dispatch job that had also opened, but Vice President Mitch Campbell saw a different opportunity for her. “In my interview I’m selling how good I’d be at this dispatch job when Mitch mentioned another position that would help with sales,” Cindy explained. “I was like REALLY!? I was so excited.” The rest is history. “I feel like I’ve worked here forever,” Cindy says. And that’s a good thing. “I couldn’t work with a better group [operations]. I immediately felt like I had known them for a long time.” 

Getting the job done with Topeka service techs Jesse Kealy, Brent Sarlls and Bryon Frost

“Creating an Instant Smile is My Goal Every Day” That’s what Cindy says, and that’s what she does. Cindy’s colorful style helps keep the fun at P1. She’s already nicknamed many of her colleagues: “Princess Diana”, “Toots” “Chiefette” and “The Man in the Corner” to name a few (you know who you are). And those notorious lady bug shoes are always a hit.

P1 Group has been named a 2018 Top 600 Specialty Contractor by the Engineering News-Record (ENR) magazine. P1 Group hit the list at number 122 among all specialty contractors and also placed 37th on the “Top 50 Firms in Mechanical” list. For more than 30 years, the Top 600 Specialty Contractors list has combined categories of specialty contractors (16 categories this year), ranking them by the previous year’s annual revenue. The ENR list also reveals trends in the marketplace and the trend right now for specialty contractors is a “generational high market,” meaning the market is at its highest in work, although finding the labor to do the work remains a concern. Contractors on the Top 600 list had combined revenue of $124 billion in 2017, up 10% from $112 billion in 2016. The mechanical and electrical trades accounted for 49 percent of the total revenue. The P1 Group ENR rankings breakdown: • 122nd in the nation as a specialty contractor • 5th in Kansas as a specialty contractor • 37th in the nation as a mechanical contractor To see the full ENR rankings, click here.

Annual Golf Tournament Raises Funds for Warrior’s Ascent GT The 16th annual P1 Group Charity Golf Tournament on October 13 raised $14,262 for Warriors’ Ascent, a Kansas City-based organization that serves veterans and first responders to help them cope with moral injuries they’ve suffered in the line of duty. Warriors’ Ascent was founded in 2014 by two Iraq combat veterans, and has since served more than 300 veterans and first responders struggling with post traumatic stress through a five-day program run eight to 10 times per year. Through meditation, fitness, nutrition and cathartic rituals borrowed from ancient warrior traditions, Warriors’ Ascent helps put participants on the path to self-healing while gaining a sense of community with others who have had similar experiences.

Mike Kenny, Executive Director of Warriors’ Ascent, said they budget approximately $2,000 to bring a person through the program. So, the $14,000+ raised at the tournament will help seven people. “That’s significant, this is who we are and what we do,” Kenny said. “Attendees pay nothing and, bottom line, we save lives.” Over the years, P1 Group has raised more than $124,000 for local and area charities with the golf tournament. P1’s vendors have helped significantly over the years by donating raffle prizes worth thousands of dollars. Pay-to-play challenges on the course also bring in money and P1 Group matches the funds raised each year. 

P1 Group Partners with Cryogenic Systems Leader P1 Group Inc. has joined forces with Chart Industries as an Engineered Systems Partner (ESP), opening a doorway for expanded opportunities across the country to provide and install vacuum jacketed cryogenic piping systems. Vacuum jacketed piping is used in an array of applications including biological storage and research, food and beverage packaging, aerospace, food freezing, electronic manufacturing and testing, and molecular beam epitaxy. Nick Lawless, P1 Project Manager, went through extensive training on the piping to become an ESP Program Manager and P1’s Chart Representative. “If anyone here at P1 has cryogenic piping questions or needs, I’m happy to visit with you and take a look at any potential projects,” Nick said. As an ESP, P1 Group is ahead of the competition because Chart will notify P1 of opportunities and direct customers to P1 for help designing their systems and for the piping. P1 also receives a discount on the piping, which will be helpful on competitively bid projects. So far, P1 has performed vacuum jacketed piping installations for one customer and has provided the piping to Colorado companies who will use it in their installations. P1 is also currently working with a lab facility to provide guidance on the installation of vacuum jacketed piping. 
