CYBER SECURITY: HOW ARE WE DOING?

P1 Group Rolls out New Brand Video In honor of P1 Group’s 100-year milestone, the Marketing Department took on the task of producing a high-level brand video that captures the essence of P1 Group as an organization - and you’re getting first look!

Following the 100th year, the video will live on as a marketing overview of who we are, ideal for sharing with new customers, partners and associates who may not know much about P1 Group.

P1 Group partnered with Kansas City-based video production company Oupost Worldwide on the project.

Victoria notes the next video production goals for P1 Group will be creating shorter, more specialized video content to highlight different capabilities and regional locations of the company.

“When we set out to create this video, we wanted to look at our milestone accomplishment not just from where we’ve been, but, more importantly, where we’re going,” Victoria Hoffman, Marketing and Communications Manager, explained. “This project was less about drilling down into timelines and details and more about imparting the spirit, values and principles that make P1 Group a place to be proud of.”

With the addition of Digital Marketing Specialist Tiffany Oldham to the team, Marketing will be seeking opportunities to visit construction and service job sites, office locations, and more to take the next step in bringing the P1 Group story to life. 

Releasing soon on P1 social media: Spread the word about P1 Group by sharing this video with customers, prospects, recruits, and on your own social media. Click below to watch!

Project Profile: Children’s Mercy Hospital Research Tower CMH

Preparing tor the installations of the massive cooling towers What you don’t usually see when you visit a hospital are the massive mechanical systems behind the scenes that keep the environment precisely regulated, operations running smoothly, and patients and personnel safe.

P1 Group was able to put our single-source value to work on this project, performing all of the following: • VDC/BIM

In 2017, P1 Group was selected by General Contractor McCownGordon Construction for the mechanical scope of the two-part Children’s Mercy Hospital Research Tower project, also partnering with Engineer Brack and Associates and Architect BSA Lifestructures.

• Detailing/Coordination • Fabrication (Pipe/Plumbing/Sheet Metal) • Construction (HVAC/Plumbing/Sheet Metal) Phase 1 the project required the addition of 2,000 tons of cooling.

According to Project Manager Carey Minihan, one of the immediate advantages was that P1 Group was selected early in the design process.

“Using the layout and design by our VDC department, we were able to prefabricate almost all of the new piping in our Lawrence fabrication facility,” Carey said.

“We were able to work with McCownGordon, Brack and BSA to provide input on the design and receive feedback from the design team,” Carey said. Carey says this collaboration allowed the team to customize the design around specific products (pre-fabricated exterior wall panels, CRC lab equipment and controls, dual-tunnel Temtrol air handling units, Johnson Controls). “By doing this, many potential problems and obstacles were solvable during the early design phase,” Carey noted.

During Phase 1, the chilled water piping was modified to turn two chilled water plants into one plant. “One of the biggest challenges during the first phase was installing a new chilled water system and tying it into the existing chilled water system while the existing chilled water system continued to feed the facility,” Carey said.

“We used laser scanning to map the existing system and then our VDC department was able to route the new piping through the existing to make the new tie-ins.” The cold winter made things more precarious when the team had to also navigate a one-day shutdown of the chilled water system on a very cold Saturday to make those tie-ins. Phase 2 of the project, now in progress, is the construction of the new nine-story research tower along with a new auditorium.

Ben Schrader

The first two floors serve as office space, conference rooms, and other administrative spaces. Floors three and four are all laboratory space. The fifth floor is all mechanical. Minihan said that one half of the sixth floor is a vivarium - a live ecosystem, usually enclosed, for keeping and raising animals or plants for observation or research - with an interstitial space in between. The other half of the sixth floor along with and floors 7, 8, and 9 are shell structure.

Brady Kyle

In Phase 2, VDC/BIM work will save time and labor. “The key for us in Phase 2 is our VDC department’s ability to lay out and coordinate the new systems,” Carey said. “Then we can install concrete inserts for all of our hangers (pipe and sheet metal) which saves a lot of labor - as opposed to drilling inserts. It also establishes the layout of the systems which saves layout time.” Jason Larsen

The project is scheduled for completion in July, 2020. 

A HISTORY OF EXCELLENCE WITH:

P1 Group has decades of experience executing work within all Children’s Mercy Hospital facilities. Our familiarity with CMH standards serves as an advantage for the team and this project because we are able to effectively manage the process while working with vendor partners to ensure that the desired design criteria is adhered to from pre-construction to project closeout.

Rock Star FMO Team Keeps Catalent’s Critical Equipment Running through Brutal Winter FMO

Companies like Catalent Pharma Solutions hold consumer health in their hands – the development and delivery of the drugs they make are critical to saving lives. They face strenuous government regulations and strict operating procedures, so having facility equipment fail is serious and can lead to disastrous loss of product and profit. Thanks to the above-and-beyond diligence of the P1 Group Facility Maintenance Operations (FMO) team at Catalent, there were no fails and it was “business as usual”, even throughout the brutal winter. “The P1 Group employees working for Catalent made the extra effort to make sure everything was running through the night on the coldest night of the season, and all through the year,” John Brown, Catalent Senior Manager/ Facilities, said. Lead by Lead Craftsman Earl Brown, the P1 Group FMO team works in shifts 24/7, and they are responsible for the whole campus. On particularly cold nights and weekends, there is high risk for air handlers and chillers to freeze up, or for pressurized rooms to lose the critical temperatures they must maintain. Failure could lead to the loss of millions of dollars in product. Enter the P1 Group FMO team. In extreme weather situations, they provide extra staff to work around the clock on nights and weekends to keep a close

eye on all equipment. They constantly check systems, pressures, etc. to ensure no mishaps. Catalent General Manager Matthew Mollan praised the work of P1 Group. “The preparation and thinking of the P1 Group team allowed us to stay open through a really cold night. This is not just ‘we got lucky today’ – efforts into planning, making upgrades to add to performance, and having team members ready to respond is how we avoid issues,” he said. “We strive for boring ‘business as usual’. As our site has expanded, it is critical, and will only continue to gain in importance, that we avoid anything that shuts down activities as every day comes with a big price in potential missing revenues or the inability to get product out to patients,” Matthew explained. “It takes continued investment, ownership of the site, deep understanding of how it runs, and strategic thought into what we fix/upgrade next, and the P1 Group team is on it!” John points out why the attention to detail makes all the difference. “The team has been an integral part of keeping Catalent running so patients can get help with illnesses from the drugs manufactured here,” he said. “None of those drugs could be made without the utility systems we maintain and repair. We are all part of the “patient first” motto for Catalent.”

A Half Century of Wisdom

ASSOC

Joe Camren Shares His Insights from Then and Now

P1 Group is in full-swing with its 100-year celebration, and Senior Estimator Joe Camren has been around for more than half of it. One of P1 Group’s longest-tenured employees, Joe started as a plumber apprentice in the field in 1966 (with founding company A.D. Jacobson) and is still going strong as a senior estimator at corporate headquarters today. In a recent Q&A, he shared his observations about his work, his company, and what really makes a person successful. P1: Over the years, where has your career path at P1 Group taken you? JC: Near the end of my plumbing apprenticeship, I became the foreman on several projects at what was then Independence Medical Center (currently Centerpoint Medical Center). When the project was completed, one of the A.D. Jacobson founders, Elliot, asked me to work in the office as a plumbing estimator/project manager. Around the same time, the Plumber’s Local Union #8 asked me to be an instructor at the Plumber’s Training Center, where I taught for the next 20 years. I was also assigned the task of plumber manpower coordinator, which I did until the current manpower management system was adopted. When the company formed the Central Estimating division several years ago, I became a full-time mechanical estimator and still hold the position today.

P1: What has kept you at P1 Group this long? JC: I have loved, and still love, every aspect of the jobs I’ve had and the job I have, from the field to project management and estimating to training/ managing/interacting with associates through the years. I have been blessed by God to have the good health and ability to keep performing my job well. Throughout all its history, this company has been top-notch in every way. P1 Group has a stellar reputation among peers and customers, absolute integrity, and upper management that truly wants the best for associates. It’s not surprising to me that everyone I run into wants to work for P1 Group. P1: What are some of the great moments you’ve experienced here? JC: I have to admit that it was a little scary to go from the mom & pop

version of our company to such a large corporation, but it has been a great pleasure to watch this develop over the years. I still miss the old days, but that’s what you do when you get to be my age! P1: What are some of the most significant changes you’ve seen take place over the years to improve our work and our industry? JC: Safety, Safety, Safety! Back in the day, there was often reliance on the unions to conduct safety training, and it wasn’t ideal. Safety was important, but there was a lack of commitment to training the entire workforce. P1 Group has stepped up to this costly but imperative commitment, leading the way in our industry to provide a safe workplace for ALL associates. P1 Group has also stayed on the cutting edge of technology, which is how we can provide a quality product at competitive prices. P1: What do you think are the most valuable traits someone can bring to their job? JC: I’ve hired many employees for this company over the years and reliability is key. I look for those not just with mechanical aptitude, but those who are reliable, steady, and dependable. I’ve always told prospective employees we aren’t looking for geniuses, if they have a good attitude, do their best work, and show up on time every day, they will do well and succeed in this industry.

P1: What words of advice do you have for the next generation considering this industry? JC: There is a great need for more people in this industry – go for it! Most people can start earning an above-average income in just a few years. I’m just a country boy from northern Oklahoma and this industry has allowed me to do very well in life. My wife and I have raised three children and are enjoying our five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren (with more on the way). This leads me to my final piece of advice: Don’t take your job home with you. Enjoy your family and get the necessary rest and relaxation you need so you can give 100% when you return to work each day. 

Cyber Security Test: You Are Our First Line of Defense

REMEMBER THIS? In February, P1 Group conducted another Cyber Security Phishing exercise to further evaluate our risk for email phishing attacks. The email campaign featured the above email, asking associates to both click on a link and potentially provide an electronic signature. Failure of the test was clicking either of the “View Documents” or “docusign.com” links. Each of which provided a clue that the email was probably fraudulent.

HERE’S HOW YOU DID: •

613 Total Emails were sent during this campaign.

448 individuals opened the email (this is not a fail) 73.1%

278 failed by clicking on either of the 2 links within the email 45.4%

45.4% is the failure rate based on the total 613 emails that were sent.

O F THE 448 THAT OPENED THE EMAIL 278 WENT ON TO CLICK THE LINKS WHICH MEANS 62% FAILED.

• Our percentage of those that open the email and go on to click remains very high and actually increased slightly to 62% BUT…

As a reminder, the May 2018 baseline study, using a test email to see how many would open and click had the following results: • 518 emails were sent.

• Failures were down to 45.4% which is a respectable decrease compared to our baseline.

• 343 opened the email. • 210 clicked the link and another 117 entered in their username and password.

• Our overall percentage of risk is down to 45.4%. • IT was notified more often during this campaign than the previous campaign and good indicator that people are on the look out.

• Our overall percentage was 63.1%. • Of the 343 that opened the email, 210 or 61.2% went on to fail. We didn’t do great, but the news isn’t all bad. According to IT Manager Cameron Cooper, the following are the takeaways from this most recent test: • We sent more emails since our baseline in May of 2018.

So remember: Be aware, read carefully before clicking or signing anything you don’t recognize or are even a little unsure of, and be the first line of defense in increasing cyber security for P1 Group! 

• More people opened the email.

RESPECT YOUR MOTHER (EARTH)

earth

April 22 is Earth Day, so what better time to remind us all that we can do our part to conserve our environment. GET IN THE RECYCLING MINDSET You may not remember or be able to do it all the time, but P1 Group has designated bins for recycling, so it’s easy to do at work, where you’re producing plenty of recyclable waste. Here’s a reminder of what you should, and shouldn’t, place in the blue recycling bins at P1 Group.

GO FOR IT!

DON’T DO IT!

Cardboard (packing, boxes)

Coffee Creamer Cups & Stir Straws

Newspaper/Magazines

Napkins and Paper Towels

Copy Paper

Styrofoam

Plastic (rinsed – no food waste)

Containers with Food Waste

Aluminum

Copy Paper Ream Wrap

Chipboard (like frozen meal boxes)

Glass Plastic Bags Plasticware/Straws

WHEN IN DOUBT, THROW IT OUT! If you aren’t sure about something or if it has food or other residue stuck to it, throw it out. One bad item contaminates the whole batch of recycling.

Together, we make a BIG difference.

KCCC: Let the Games Begin! The Kansas City Corporate Challenge is officially underway as of April 5, starting with the kickoff walk at Arrowhead Stadium. Stay tuned for email updates on how our teams are doing and be sure to come on out to events to cheer them on! The KCCC Calendar of Events can be found here or contact Tennille Tegeler with any questions.

Back for the Challenge! Check out the this year’s P1 Group t-shirt design.
