BUILDING
BETTER LEARNING
THE FUTURE OF TRAINING: New Facility Management and Operations Approach Increases Consistency and Efficiency P1 Group’s Facility Management and Operations (FMO) team works with large facilities, many of them hospitals, to provide critical facility care. In addition to providing service, our FMO associates also serve as full-time staff at these locations. When it comes to training new FMO associates, trying to train different people at different times in different locations can present challenges in consistency and efficiency. That’s why a team has come together to re-engineer FMO training materials, using subject matter experts, new content formats, and the convenient P1 Learning Library platform. P1 Group Vice President Dave Beebe explains how the previous training format was strictly done through Excel documents at the hands of on-site management. “It was a struggle for us to manage this – each site was doing things a little bit differently, and not all associates were getting consistent training,” Dave said. Looking at Saint Luke’s Hospital as a model, Dave and Saint Luke’s Director of Facilities Gregg Hull thought there must be a better way. “The way we’ve been training was not time efficient,” Dave said. “Each time we got a new associate, or wanted to take a person from basic
training on a topic to more advanced, somebody who also works on site had to stop and provide that training,” “That’s when I thought of the P1 Learning Library,” he said. “Our goal now is to create a consistent, developed path of content that can live in one place and be shared with all FMO associates so they can access it any time, anywhere.” “In addition to the time issues are the regulatory ones,” Gregg added. “Hospitals are highly regulated and scrutinized to ensure training is meeting the set-forth standards. “Using this new learning platform not only provides better quality training, it provides a documented format where learning expectations are clear and there are mechanisms to ensure these associates, who are servicing critical systems, are more competent because of it,” he said. Gregg also noted that using the P1 Learning Library as the central hub for training materials will allow new associates to learn at their own speed, which could help them move forward faster. Dave and Gregg, along with some of the lead engineers at Saint Luke’s, were just the beginning of what would become a critical team in developing the new training materials – a team that has been working for the past year and a half to build a “better way”.

Above is an example of the FMO courses P1 Group plans to offer, demonstrating how the learning will be structured going forward. All associates will follow the Awareness path, and more advanced paths, including Competency and Master, are assigned as needed to the appropriate personnel by their management.
P1 Group Corporate Trainer Sarah Garcia provided her expertise to create the actual training infrastructure. She took the existing curriculum and developed revised learning paths, tracks, and modules associates will follow through content created for the library, including hospital policies, another layer of learning FMO associates must have. From there, P1 Group works with Ted Davis, Founder of Grace Strategic Services, Inc., an expert in executive coaching and strategic leadership development.
“Going forward there will be a host of subject matter experts – this could be anyone, whoever knows the most about the topic - and my role is to draw out from them what we need put in the training, then turn it into usable content.”
Ted says his strategy for content development includes the use of Bloom’s Taxonomy, a classification system used to define and distinguish different levels of human cognition - thinking, learning, and understanding.
Once Ted has a script and the PowerPoint, video, or other chosen medium, he delivers it to P1 Group IT Special Projects and online learning guru Vanessa Taylor, who puts the script into presentation form with narration (if needed), and builds the final content into the P1 Learning Library.
In developing content, Ted says he looks at the task at hand, the conditions under which it is performed (i.e., a hospital setting), and the standards, or desired outcomes of the learning.
At the end of each training module is an assessment – structured like a quiz – that ensures the user has absorbed the material and has a strong understanding of the content.
“A critical key to developing good content is working with the right subject matter experts,” Ted said.
Ted says the assessment may provide a situation or problem the associate has to solve based on what they’ve learned, and it’s not intended to trick or surprise. They can always go back, review the information, and answer any missed questions until a passing score is achieved.
Since safety is always first at P1 Group, that coursework was developed first. Ted spent time interviewing subject experts Don Campbell, Vice President, and Safety Director Greg Sweeney, to develop the necessary modules for Safety training. “Greg and Don provided all the information I needed to do the research
2
and put a lesson plan together. They then did the quality control to make sure the information was accurate and directly pertaining to FMO associates,” Ted said.
As the program moves forward, more team players (like HR) will become part of the process since coursework will have to be assigned to

the right people at the right time. “Administering training is a big group effort,” Dave said. “There are a lot of people who contribute to its success.” Dave notes this training is not intended to replace specialty and technical training, but it is meant to provide information on what associates are expected to know and how to use it. Sarah says she can see the far-reaching implications of this initiative as it pertains to the training of all field associates at P1 Group as well. “I am working towards making more of our topics electronic so associates can watch courses on their own before doing any live training with me,” Sarah said. “Especially in light of people working remotely due to COVID-19, this format allows training to move forward while eliminating some of the necessity to meet in-person.”
Safety Director Greg Sweeney says having resources like this online definitely fills a learning gap for Safety. “Having existing online content that can be accessed anytime and delivers the same curriculum across the board provides a more consistent level of learning for associates across the company, especially in the field,” Greg said. So after nearly two years of work, when will the FMO curriculum be finished? If it’s being done right, Dave says probably never. “This is a huge undertaking, and I don’t see it ever being done,” Dave said. “It’s something we’re going to manage, change, and improve to ensure the best possible outcomes for our associates and the customers we serve.”

Staying Cool in Hot Las Vegas: Associate Profile on Catalina De Leon
This is the time of year some people might question their decision to live in Las Vegas, NV. “When I got up this morning at 5 a.m. for a walk, it was already 96 degrees,” P1 Group Office Manager Catalina (Cat) De Leon told us at the time of this interview in late July. But Cat loves living in Vegas. A native of the Texas/Mexico border, Cat commuted to school in Texas because her parents lived on the Mexico side. She moved to Vegas in 2004. “One of my favorite things about Las Vegas is the people,” Cat said. “You meet interesting people from all over the country here, and many of the people I’ve met have turned out to be great friends.” A self-proclaimed homebody, Cat says she rarely visits the commercial spots, like the famous Strip, except when family or friends come to visit. “It’s kind of nice, because when I want to show visitors all the hot spots, it’s like I become a tourist myself all over again,” Cat said. And being a homebody this time of year in Vegas comes highly recommended. “Summer is a time to stay indoors,” Cat said. “Just like people around Kansas City stay in during the cold winters, we tend to stay in during the intense summer months.” Between her hobbies of drawing and spending time with her 13-yearold daughter Talya, Cat has plenty to occupy her time inside.
“I like to draw and spend time with my daughter,” Cat said. “We’ve been binge watching Downton Abbey together and she loves it. We’ve probably watched that series four times now!” In fact, Cat says having her daughter home from school during the COVID-19 lockdown was pretty great. “Between me working and her being in school, I don’t usually get to spend that much time with her,” Cat said. “Being at home together, managing her school work, and coming up with different tasks for her so we didn’t get bored was really enjoyable.” She also took the time to perfect her homemade tortilla game. And of course, Cat has plenty going on at the busy P1 Group Las Vegas office, where she started eight years ago as the receptionist with a total office/field staff of about 12. Today, the office has 156 associates and Cat wears many hats, working with service, construction, and everything in between. She says the excitement of the variety keeps her very happy in her work. “It’s been really exciting to watch all the different teams form and grow together,” Cat said. “And the original associates are still here, which is a blessing as we continue to grow. Everyone has done their part to bring in business and support our growth.” P1 Group and the Las Vegas team are lucky to have you, Cat!

New Addictive Pastime?
Cat and her daughter have discovered a creative pastime that many who like to draw, doodle, or sketch might find addictive. “Vanessa Taylor (P1 Group IT Special Projects) introduced us to Zentangling,” Cat said. The Zentangle method is an easy-to-learn, fun way to create images by drawing structured patterns, known as “tangles”. The patterns are drawn on small pieces of paper called “tiles”, because you can assemble them into mosaics. Baking homemade tortillas and spending time with family (especially daughter Talya) are just a few ways Cat has stayed busy this summer.

“You draw a picture, then just start drawing different patterns within each area of the picture to create a modern, geometric image,” Cat said. Learn more about Zentangling here.

Saint Luke’s East Hospital Flex Capacity Expansion: Single Source Approach Helps P1 Group Navigate Timely Challenges P1 Group has been serving the healthcare community both locally and nationally with single-source facility solutions for many years, and our recent work on the Saint Luke’s East Hospital Flex Capacity Expansion is no exception. The SLE Expansion project will address the hospital’s need for growth by expanding the emergency department. It includes a small renovation of the ER waiting room, but the bulk of the job is the construction of additional ER patient rooms. P1 is putting virtual design and construction, fabrication, and mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and technologies construction (MEPT) capabilities to work, all while navigating new safety mandates and challenges due to COVID-19. Although P1 has done MEPT projects before, this will be the first MEPT project in the Kansas City metro area. The project has only been underway about five months, but Senior Project Manager Eric Affolter has already noticed a difference in the efficiency with which the project is progressing. “Having all trades within the company working together has really increased the level of communication and efficiency you just can’t get when you work with multiple entities,” Eric said. “Especially with all the COVID-19 guidelines we are now required to follow.”
Each P1 Group trade has brought their specific expertise to the scope. MECHANICAL: New air handling unit to support the expansion, including the associated duct work, zones, controls, heating hot water to support the new Variable Air Volume (VAV) control boxes zones PLUMBING: New underground plumbing and plumbing fixtures to support the new emergency department exam rooms, and new medical gas for each patient room ELECTRICAL: Transformer and generator replacements, tying in existing structure to new construction and adding state-of-the-art lighting for the helipad TECHNOLOGY: Temporary ambulance bay setups, relocation of existing operational Fire Alarm panels to temporarily allow access to corridors, and coordinating the re-routing of existing outside fiber infrastructure for the expansion of the new Emergency Department in order to maintain services FABRICATION: Fabricating all ductwork and hangers out of P1 Group’s Lawrence, KS, fabrication facility, with plans to fabricate as much piping and electrical as possible VIRTUAL DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION: 3D modeling for all the piping, which is the basis to formulate all fabrication for the field
The SLE Expansion project is scheduled for completion in April of 2021.

As with every P1 project, safety is the highest priority, but tackling this project during the time of COVID-19 requires an even greater increase in safety protocol.
headed by Registered Communications Distribution Designer David Becerra, helped meet this challenge by setting up the temporary ambulance bays.
Across all trades, P1 has anywhere from 22-26 employees on site each day and all are required to wear masks and check in with the general contractor for tracking purposes in the event of an exposure.
“As with any healthcare facility, we had to ensure continued roundthe-clock operations, so much planning and precautions were put in place,” said David.
If for some reason associates must enter the hospital, they proceed through the hospital check stations and adhere to hospital protocol.
David’s team brought their expertise to help relocate fire alarm panels and work with fiber infrastructure to keep things operational during the construction and expansion of the Emergency Department.
As critical environments, hospitals always present their own challenges for construction and service, but adding COVID-19 to the mix meant making even more changes. For example, prior to beginning construction, the design team and the owner had to have a brainstorming session for ideas to decrease exposure in these new rooms, so it was decided return air VAVs would be put in all new patient rooms. The VAV regulates the volume of air to the zone by opening and closing the damper through the controls system. This allows the ability to make each room a negative air room. Even during the construction, it is vital that the Emergency Department remain operational, so the P1 Group Technologies Division,
“Seeing so many of P1’s trades working together is a strength the general contractor has been impressed with,” Eric said. “Other than fire protection, we were pretty much all in-house, which is nice because it gives us the opportunity to communicate with each other quickly, coordinate immediately, and not have to wait for a meeting to coordinate with other trades outside of our own company.” Eric says there is a lot of optimism that this approach, and the success of this project, will greatly benefit the general contracting community, and continue to give P1 Group its competitive edge in the near future.

HAPPENINGS Happy customer in KC… “I highly recommend P1 Group – they are always my first recommendation to people. They are amazing! Our entry/exit procedures have changed due to COVID-19. The P1 guys have adapted to all the changes and never complained once. They follow our policies and procedures without any issue.” These are the kind words we recently got from Rob Simmons, JLL Facilities Manager at the GM Fairfax Assembly Plant in Kansas City. Rob couldn’t say enough good things about Service Division Manager Brian Holladay and the P1 team working at the plant (which also includes Service Supervisor Ray Huffine and Service Manager Matt Phillips). Happy customer in St. Joseph… Congratulations to the St. Joseph service team led by Service Tradesman Kenny Hines on their top-notch work at Murphy, Watson, Burr Eye Center! Here’s what Director of Nursing Gynetta Jones had to say: “I have nothing but praise for Kenny Hines. He has been able to help us tremendously with our AC system’s ongoing problems. He can always figure out how to fix it. The P1 guys [Kenny, Michael Liggett, Aaron White, Chris Lentz] have been much more prompt than our previous provider in getting here when needed, and more knowledgeable on how to fix the problems.”
