Personal Training Builds Career Muscles

P1 University Helps New Project Managers Become Successful Faster While trial by fire can be a good way to learn, no one likes the anxiety that comes with a brand new job, project deadlines, and all new software and systems to learn. That’s where P1 University comes in. P1 Group goes above and beyond to train new project managers so they get up-to-speed about the company and their job function as soon as possible. P1 University is different from the general Empowerment offered to all new associates. Corporate Trainer Sarah Garcia says P1 University started around the time the multiple entities that make up P1 Group (A.D. Jacobson, Huxtable & Associates, U.S. Electrical, etc.) came together. “People were doing things differently. Even though we were all one, in

And the education doesn’t end after a PM’s formal sessions. Sarah makes herself available to help any time. Sarah says P1 University has gotten away from a classroom setting, opting instead to conduct the training one-on-one. “It makes it less daunting to ask questions, and we can get more indepth on the different topics,” she said. “We also look at real projects an individual is working on, which is more helpful than using a fictitious project for the sake of a classroom setting.” Sarah says P1 University also gives the company an edge in hiring new talent.

some regards it was still like working with multiple companies and it was getting confusing,” Sarah said. CEO Smitty Belcher called for reform to get everyone on the same page, and a committee was formed that included Sarah, Consultant Ted Davis, owner of Grace Strategic Services, and several project managers. The main focus of P1 University has always been project management topics. “When a new project manager comes on board, I have three sessions with them right away,” Sarah explained. “Each individual’s learning speed determines how many total sessions we’ll have. It could be three or four, or it could be 10. “We try to give an overview of basic project manager duties, but leave the door open for more – whatever will help an individual the most,” Sarah said.

“I think it sets us apart that we have a formal program to not only help new project managers understand what they’re supposed to be doing, but also to be there as a reference as long as they are with P1 Group,” she said. “Not many contractors have something like this in place.” Recently, Sarah has worked with other departments, like HR and IT, to create an online learning library for convenient reference. “We are taking the curriculum we’ve developed and creating PowerPoint presentations and videos to have out there as an on-demand resource. For example, if someone gets stuck on how to process a submittal, they can go watch a quick video to help them through it.” Training and education is one of P1 Group’s highest priorities, and we’re lucky to have Sarah here helping us pave the way for associate success.  See the sample list of P1 University offerings below.

C.A.R.E. MEANS GOING BEYOND CUSTOMER SERVICE Associate Spotlight on Kelly Masters

Customers relationships will always be top priority for P1 Group. Kelly Masters was interviewing for a different position with P1 Group when she was asked if she would be interested in the newly created position of C.A.R.E. Coordinator. With a degree in Nursing and three children, Kelly has plenty of experience in caring, and since customers have always been her favorite part of her work, she thought it would be a great opportunity. C.A.R.E. stands for Customer Assurance Review Evaluation and the position was created to provide support to all the P1 Service teams. Kelly’s primary function is to reach out to current customers to obtain feedback on P1’s performance, educate them on all P1 services, and promote long-term customer relationships. She tries to see two customers per day and before each meeting she prepares by doing research on the contracts, issues discovered during preventative maintenance, and equipment repairs. She also meets with the service manager to get background information on the account. Kelly travels to the customer site, conducting a questionnaire with an open conversation about how P1 is doing. Kelly says going out to talk to the customers is her favorite part of the job. The majority of the time the customers are extremely happy with P1’s services and have wonderful things to say about the service technicians and service managers.

“It’s a great experience for me to hear how awesome we’re doing and then be able to come back to the office and share that information with everyone,” Kelly said. She finds it a bit challenging when there is a customer who hasn’t had such a good experience. “If something has gone wrong, everyone has to work together to figure out how to fix the situation and get things on the right track,” Kelly said. During the visits, Kelly has the opportunity to not only educate the customer on our single-source capabilities, but also give them a greater understanding of what their own contract entails. They don’t always grasp why they are paying for additional repair work when they have a maintenance agreement. Kelly provides documents that help explain it. She also provides a pie chart that shows a review of services performed during the year. Her goals for the position include assisting the service department by providing feedback to help the department continually improve. “I want the customers to know how much we value their business but more importantly I want them to know how much P1 cares about them and our relationship with them,” Kelly explained. For Kelly, C.A.R.E. is not just maintaining relationships, but looking for new opportunities for that customer and P1 Group, ultimately creating another customer for life. 

Kelly was born and raised in Lenexa, but her husband’s job has kept them on the move. They moved eight times in 13 years and have lived in Oklahoma, Georgia, Tennessee, Arkansas, Florida, Texas, and of course, Kansas. She has three children and each of them was born in a different state. Kelly enjoys spending time with her family, watching her kids participate in their various sports and activities, boating, and snow skiing. She also has a love/ hate relationship with running, which she still manages to do every day!

‘TIS THE SEASON To Get Rid of that Extra Halloween Candy

Last year, Project Manager Nick Lawless helped P1 Group avoid a few extra pounds by collecting leftover Halloween candy. Nick sorted and shipped the candy to Operation Shoebox, an organization that collects and ships essentials to our troops overseas and veterans at home. More than one million packages have been sent, filled with snacks, personal care items and thank you notes. This year, Nick will officially collect at the Lenexa AND Lawrence locations, but all offices are welcome to collect their own after-Halloween leftovers for donation to Operation Shoebox.

ALL OFFICES CAN PARTICIPATE! Just designate someone to do the sorting and dropping, and collect all that candy you know you don’t need! Don’t have candy? There are other ways to help at OperatonShoebox.com

Kevin Lane Memorial Scholarship Making a Difference in Student Careers 2019 marks the 5th anniversary of the Kevin Lane Memorial Scholarship which was first awarded for the 2015-2016 school year. Kevin Lane was an electrical foreman who passed away early 2013 after working at P1 for more than 27 years. The P1 Group executive team honored him with a memorial scholarship and designated it for students at the University of Kansas School of Engineering. The P1 Annual Charity Golf Tournament raised money for the scholarship fund in 2013 and 2014, and P1 Group provided matching fund donations. KU Endowment is managing the scholarship fund and also oversees the award process. The recipient for the 2018-2019 school year was Nathan Greene, a sophomore, majoring in Chemical Engineering with a biomedical emphasis. The recipient for 2019-2020 is Alex Trujillo. Alex is a senior, majoring in Architectural Engineering with a minor in German Studies. Congratulations to these students. P1 Group wishes them the best of luck in their pursuit of an engineering career.

17th Annual Charity Golf Tournament Raising Some “Green” on the Green

September 14 brought fantastic weather for the 66 golfers who participated in the 17th Annual Charity Golf tournament to benefit Working Families’ Friend. This is the second year the event was held at beautiful Shoal Creek Golf Course and the event raised a whopping $9,065. With the matching donation from P1 Group, the grand total collected was $18,130, surpassing last year’s total by over $4,000. The golfers were treated to food and drink, course challenges and a vast amount of awards and prizes that were generously donated by our vendors. “This was my first P1 Golf Tournament. I’ve wanted to participate for a while now and I’m glad I did,” said Service Manager John Cobb. “This was a really fun event, getting to see customers and co-workers, some of whom I work with and see every week and some of whom I haven’t seen in a long time. I’ll definitely be back next year!” Service Accounting Manager Morgan Lassise offered up a big thank you to the P1 team for organizing such a great event. “Every year it’s a hit and between the support for a local charity and the venue, I couldn’t ask for a better time with friends, family, and P1 colleagues. Speaking of hits, I only hit one house this year!” We appreciate all the volunteers, vendors, and golfers who helped make this year’s event a success. 

IT’S RECRUITING TIME! P1 Group went out to represent at several career fairs in September, including Pittsburg State University, Kansas State University, and the University of Kansas. HAPPENINGS

⇑CELEBRATION OF 100 YEARS. Customers, vendors, and partners joined us September 18 as Lenexa Mayor Michael Boehm gave remarks and presented a special proclamation naming September 18 the official celebration of P1 Group’s 100-year history.

⇑MURDER THEY WROTE? Crime labs are among the most critical environments around, and the P1 Group Las Vegas team recently set a generator for the City of Henderson Crime Lab. Chris Kilburn and Scott Counts were the electricians on the job.

⇐⇑FLYING PROUD. The real star of the September 18 event was the 4’ x 8’ 3D flag created by the Architectural Metal Shop for the Lenexa Gathering Room. 16-gauge #8 stainless steel was used for the star field and alternating stripes; the stars were laser cut in the shop’s Trumpf 3000-watt fiber optic laser; 16-gauge stainless steel with a shop-applied “check finish” was used for the alternating stripes; and the flag was finished with blue and red prismatic high-gloss powder coat paint.
