Biography [Biografia] António Variações is one of the greatest icons of Portuguese Pop music. The authenticity and emotion he conveyed to his creations has inspired, and goes on inspiring, several generations of Portuguese artists.

António Variações was born António Joaquim Rodrigues Ribeiro in December 1944, near the city of Braga. Music was a constant presence in his life. At the age of 12 he goes to Lisbon where he lives and works for a few years until he departs for Angola in 1965. In 1970 he travels to London; later he declares that he did not benefit from this contact with a different country as fully as he did later when he journeyed firstly to Italy in 1973 and soon after to Holland in 1974.

By this time António was already dedicating himself to learning and practicing the craft of barber for the specific reason that, as he made a point of clarifying, it was the haircut not the style that interested him the most. And it is also the idea of ‘cutting out’ that is present in his personality in a most significant way, as he would not have anything to do with prejudice or with anything regarded as common or consensual. He opens the “É pró Menino e prá Menina” barbershop and becomes immediately noticed for the combination resulting from his unusual clothes and his apparent barber poise.

Keeping faithful to his lifelong ambition of becoming a musician, in 1978 he finally signed a contract with record label Valentim de Carvalho, and four years of travels, concerts and performances go by before he recorded his first album. The lyrics of his songs, deep-rooted in his motherland, speak about that journey “between Braga and NY”, about his longing for change in a country that is changing slowly, and about his personal worries. Between 1982 and 1984 he recorded two singles and two albums, the latter of which came out days before his death on 13 June 1984, Saint Anthony of Lisbon’s feast day.

1984 - “Dar & Receber”, LP. António Variações é um dos ícones maiores da música Pop portuguesa; marcou e continua a marcar diversas gerações de artistas portugueses, pela genuinidade e emoção que emprestava às suas criações.

Nascido António Joaquim Rodrigues Ribeiro, em Dezembro de 1944, perto de Braga, sempre viveu com a música. Com 12 anos vai para Lisboa onde vive e trabalha durante alguns anos, até ir para Angola, em 1965. Em 1970, parte para Londres e conforme afirma mais tarde, não retira ainda deste contacto com outro país, o pleno proveito, ao contrário do que sucede em seguida, quando viaja, primeiro para Itália, em 1973 e depois, em 1974, para a Holanda.

Já nesta altura, António se dedicava a aprender e exercer a profissão de barbeiro, como fazia questão de marcar, porque o que lhe interessava mais era o corte e não o penteado. E é também o corte que marca a sua personalidade, o corte com os preconceitos, com o que é comum e consensual. Assim, abre a Barbearia “É pró Menino e prá Menina”, onde a sua imagem é notada pelas roupas invulgares, associadas à aparente serenidade do barbeiro.

Sem perder o rumo que norteava as suas ambições mais profundas de ser músico, em 1978 assina finalmente contrato com a Editora Valentim de Carvalho, mas passam 4 anos, algumas viagens mais, vários concertos e apresentações, até gravar o primeiro disco. As letras das suas músicas, com raízes na sua terra natal, contam essa viagem, “entre Braga e NY”, a sua vontade de mudança, num país a mudar devagar e as suas interrogações pessoais. Entre 1982 e 1984, grava dois singles e dois LPs, tendo o último saído nos dias anteriores à sua morte, em 13 de Junho de 1984, dia de Santo António.

Three copies of the letter addressed to the daily newspaper Correio Manhã – “Ao Jornal Correio da Manhã” – dated 24th April 1981, introducing the author and few of his lyrics. Nine sheets of paper written on one side only with erasures and corrections and the envelope which enclosed the letters; one of the letters, the final version, consists of three sheets of paper numbered on the upper right corner of the page. 25 original Cassettes

Forty-one (60 and 90 minute) cassettes – BEREC, TDK, BASF, SANYO, SONOVOX – stored at the premises of EMI-Valentim de Carvalho, which were at the heart of the twelve unreleased songs that constituted the Humanos project; with annotations handwritten by António Variações on various subjects, namely on musical content, locations, addresses, among others.

The cassettes have, since 2004, been numbered, labelled and catalogued from 1 to 45 by journalist Nuno Galopim (Cassettes number 6, 10, 15, 17 and 39 are missing).

Miguel F. Cadete, journalist of the daily newspaper Público, describes the contents of the cassettes as follows: “At home, alone, he performs songs to a rhythm set by the clapping of his hands or by mimicking the sound of instruments. Some of these songs are at such an early stage that they do not have lyrics yet. The sound of the instruments in these tapes is sometimes made solely of the beat of a basic rhythm box or by the muffled sound made by the band that accompanied him, i.e., guitars and drums, a testimony of a sense urgency that is moving to say the least. [...] Inside Variações’ chest there are also versions, elemental versions, of the themes that make up the Humanos album and also of songs that were released during António’s lifetime. But there are also songs like “Guerra nuclear” and “Reconciliação” that remain unpublished. Versions of songs he performed live can also be found, such as, the Kinks theme It’s Now or Never” popularized by Elvis Presley. There is a complete record of a show at Rock Rendezvous in which the artist was introduced quite simply as “António”, and another record of a concert at Trumps discotheque. Several versions of “Toma o Comprimido que isso passa-te”, the theme played when António Variações first appeared at Júlio Isidro’s TV programmes in February 1981, as well as “Não me consumas”, a theme which is part of the Humanos record. A version of “...

Que pena seres vigarista”, one of the songs of the album “Anjo da Guarda”, with Fontes Rocha on the Portuguese guitar and the song “Estou além” tested out with different lyrics, as well as an interview with the approximate duration of 40 minutes on Rui Pêgo’s radio programme.”

As cassetes encontram-se desde 2004 numeradas, classificadas e catalogadas de 1 a 45, pelo jornalista Nuno Galopim (não constam as cassetes 6, 10, 15, 17 e 39).

São também gravações em que o instrumental por vezes é unicamente constituído pela batida de uma caixa de ritmos rudimentar ou pelo som roufenho da banda formada pelos músicos que o acompanhavam - ou seja, já com guitarras e bateria, demonstrativos de uma urgência que chega a ser comovente. [...] No baú de Variações encontram-se ainda versões, mesmo que primitivas, dos temas que fazem parte do disco dos Humanos e daqueles que vieram a conhecer edição ainda António era vivo. Mas também existem canções que continuarão inéditas, como “Guerra nuclear” e “Reconciliação”. Ou versões de canções que interpretava ao vivo, como um tema dos Kinks ou de “It’s Now or Never”, popularizado por Elvis Presley. Encontra-se também o registo completo de um espectáculo gravado no Rock Rendez-Vous em que o artista era singelamente apresentado como “António”, e até de um outro concerto na discoteca Trumps. Estão lá também várias versões de “Toma o Comprimido que isso passa-te”, o tema com que Variações se estreou nos programas de Júlio Isidro, em Fevereiro de 1981, juntamente com “Não me consumas”, agora aproveitado para o disco dos Humanos. Há ainda uma versão de “...Que pena seres vigarista”, um dos temas de “Anjo da Guarda”, aqui com Variações acompanhado à guitarra portuguesa por Fontes Rocha, e várias experiências sobre a música de “Estou além” mas com outras letras, além de uma entrevista com cerca de 40 minutos para um programa de rádio apresentado por Rui Pêgo.”]

1 - General terms for in-person and on-line auction trading – Buyers 1.1 – Company information “Potássio Quatro, Lda”, VAT nº PT505825961, headquarter at 16 Navegantes St. 1200-731 Lisboa, further referred to as “P4” or “P4LiveAuctions” is the auction promoter for both the on-line auctions conducted in www.p4liveauctions.com and in-person auctions taking place in selected salerooms.

1.2 – Buyers’ identification and registration 1.2.1 In-person auctions a) A previous registration is needed to bid in “P4” auctions upon which a bidding paddle is given. b) Name, address, telephone number, fax, e-mail and other information are requested to fill in the registration form. c) The buyer acknowledges and accepts the general terms for trading in auction by signing the registration form. d) The bidder is considered to bid for himself unless he’s given a mandate to represent a third party.

1.2.2 On-line registration a) The user registered on-line at www.p4liveauctions.com “accepts” totally and unequivocally the present general terms and the specific conditions for on-line registration. b) The “user’s email” combined with the “password” given by “P4” will unequivocally identify the registered user through any operation performed in the website.

1.2.3 “P4” holds the right to refuse entrance in the firm headquarters and exhibition and salerooms to anyone considered of unreliable conduct.

1.3 – Bidding 1.3.1 “P4” is allowed to bid for any property or lot on behalf of others that have specifically asked for it and it’s obliged to execute the agreement held between parties.

1.3.2 Only those who fit the present general terms are allowed to bid except otherwise considered by “P4”.

1.3.3 “P4” will declare the property sold in auction to the registered buyer offering the highest bid. The auctioneer has the authority to resolve any query occurring during the auction and may repeat the bid starting from the amount that caused the query in order to dissipate it.

1.3.4 P4 reserves the right to refuse entrance in the saleroom to anyone of unreliable behaviour. It is also the company’s decision to accept or reject any absentee bid.

1.3.5 P4 will accept absentee biddings sent by fax, email or delivered in person up until 24 hours before the auction.

1.3.6 On-line bidding (P4BidOnline system) 1.3.6.1 P4LiveAuctions enables potential buyers to bid and participate in real time on “P4” auctions, through the Internet at http://www. p4liveauctions.com/bidonline.

1.3.6.2 For each auction, “P4” will provide previously registered users a paddle number to access the system and bid online.

1.3.6.3 The online “auction room” may be disconnected at any time without prior notice, if, at a given time, the necessary conditions are not met.

1.3.6.4 “P4” reserves the right to put on sale only lots previously selected.

1.3.6.5 Online bidding obliges the user just as regular bidding at the auction house and obey to the same set of terms and conditions like regular bidding.

1.3.6.6 The message “SOLD TO YOU” on the online bidding interface of the user indicates that a given lot was sold to him.

1.3.6.7 Only the auctioneer has the right to accept or decline online bidding.

1.3.6.8 Lot closing and selling is managed using the information available at the auction house system computers. “P4” is not responsible for delayed bids/messages caused by the conditions of Internet traffic and connections availabe throughout the auction.

1.4 – Property condition Property is placed in auction in the same condition it’s in.

1.5 – Property exhibition 1.5.1 The property placed in auction will be exhibit in public for 24 hours minimum, either through new on-line information systems or locally in the selected saleroom for the auction.

1.5.2 All interested persons have free access to this public exhibition without the need of a previous registration.

1.5.3 Access to on-line exhibition is made through www.p4liveauctions.com website or at a previously determined place.

1.6 – Buyer’s Premium This is the amount of money automatically added to the “hammer price” and paid by the winning bidder. * in person: 19% (excluding VAT) * Internet: 22.5% (excluding VAT) In addition, the buyer must pay all applicable Tax’s.

1.7 – Payment 1.7.1 The full payment of the property sold is made according to the previous clause within 24 hours after the auction in the selected saleroom or the firm’s headquarter.

1.7.2 The buyer will be penalized with a 10 euro/day tax over each lot purchased in case terms referred in clause 1.7.1 are not fulfilled.

1.7.3 Immediately after the bidding “P4” may claim from the registered buyer the payment of no less than 30% of the hammer price declared for the purchased property.

1.7.4 “P4” reserves the right to cancel the sale of property that has not been paid with the total amount declared according to the previous clause within 30 days after the auction. The buyer in debt will not be entitled to any compensation whatsoever and will lose all amounts paid in advance or for any other purpose.

1.7.5 Property registration transference on behalf of the buyer will occur after payment is confirmed available.

1.8 - Property collection 1.8.1 “P4” reserves the right to refuse collection of property purchased in case full payment estimated according to the previous clauses is not available.

1.8.2 Delay on the collection of property may be penalized with a 10 euro/day tax over each lot purchased.

1.8.3 Collection of property should always be made by the buyer himself or his representative with a legal mandate.

1.9 – Property description “P4”’s property descriptions are merely nominative and therefore considered correct. It’s up to the buyer to seek for a specialist’s examination in case he finds it necessary.

1.10 – Publishing rights “P4” reserves the right to use and publish by all means and for all purposes both the image and description of all the property placed in auction.

1.11 – Present terms change “P4” holds the right to change the present buyers’ general terms which is made by previous publication through the new information and promotion systems in www.p4liveauctions.com website or at the selected saleroom for the auction.

1.12 - Export/Import permits Buyers should always check whether an export licence is required before exporting. It is the buyer´s sole responsibility to obtain any relevant export or import licence. The denial of any license or any delay in obtaining licences shall neither justify the rescission of any delay in making full payment for the lot. P4, can advise buyers on the detailed provisions of the export licensing regulations and will submit any necessary export license applications on request. However, P4, cannot ensure that a licence will be obtained. Portuguese Law may prohibit the export/import of same property.

1.13 – Only the court of Lisbon and no other has the authority to conduct any issue resulting from the present buyers’ general terms or any other non-referred issue.
