President’s Message Turn every corner with a smile, you never know who may be taking a picture! I saw this quote and I liked it. It also got me thinking...I remember when cameras used film that had to be developed. You could send your film off to a lab and have your prints back in a week or two. As a kid I remember my father buying a very expensive camera for his real estate business. It was a Polaroid. It was incredible! Instant pictures after 60 seconds. Amazing. I still remember the odor of the chemicals and the pink sponge that you would use to coat the picture. Regardless of whether someone has a camera or not, we need to be aware of what people see in us. People are watching. They are noticing. Our ability to give a first impression only lasts for nanoseconds. How we conduct ourselves, how we dress, the words we use all determine how people view us. As professionals, we have a responsibility to provide great service to our customers and clients. We have the professional responsibility to treat people kindly. For hundreds of years, many businesses including auctioneers have used the Golden Rule of treating others the way you would want to be treated. That phrase alone can settle a lot of issues.

Tim Keller

2018 PAA President

...consider these thoughts:

Why should I go.- Each year I am asked “why should I go to the conference”? or “what can the PAA do for me”? Generally my answer is rhetorical in the sense that “Why shouldn’t you go”? The conference is filled with educational, networking, strategic, professional, and personal opportunities. There is much more content inside than what appears to be available looking in from the outside. With the current licensing issue, this year more than ever, we need to come together as the ONLY association that represents the auction industry in the state of Pennsylvania. We are looked upon as a very well respected and strong auction industry organization. As proven before we are not afraid to fight. So when the question arises as to what the PAA does for me (?) the coming months will answer that question as we will begin the fight to save the license requirements needed for auctioneers. Several Educational opportunities- From first time attendees to experienced auctioneers, everyone can learn. Keeping up to date on current trends, products, rules and regulations can have a huge impact on your future auction results. The educational opportunities available at the conference can expose you to new ways of conducting business and help you discover how to be more profitable and productive. Networking- Auctioneers from other parts of the state are valuable resources for referrals and business ideas. Shying away from peers for fear of disclosing your “secret” information may actually limit your own success. Sometimes there are those whose intentions can be viewed as false but networking with other auctioneers can help each other with interesting ideas and information. Encounter new vendors and suppliers. With one of the largest trade shows available at any state auctioneer conference, it is the perfect opportunity to see what the vendors have to offer. Never feel awkward or shy at the vendor tables. Of course the vendors want your business but if you listen closely you will hear the differences in similar products and you will have the ability to discuss business face to face. There is also a possibility that you may learn why others in the auction industry use the products they use. Modern products for your business can move you ahead of the competition. Consider yourself a professional. Auctioneers who have been in the business for years are well respected, tenured, and have learned the lessons of the trade. They are great sources of knowledge and information. Many enjoy the annual gathering and use it as an opportunity to rekindle friendships that have evolved thru years of attendance. It is a special opportunity and a gathering of those engaged in the auction “profession”. Have fun. Although any business may sometimes be stressful...take a step back, a deep breath and relax. As a PAA member you are part of an organization that understands and represents it’s members. We are the watchdog for your business. Having the ability to do something you enjoy as a career is an opportunity that very few will ever experience. Embrace that opportunity to its fullest potential. Take the good with the bad and remember that there is always opportunity for fun. The conference can add social value into auction education. Never underestimate the power of some fun mixed with business.

An Auctioneer’s Tale Written by Dawn Smith about a Kevin Wheeler experience

It’s Hideous!

It always starts with a phone call. A nice lady, whose husband recently passed, called to inquire about an estate sale. Her question was, “Can you sell cars?” Of course the answer was, “yes” but it made me wonder about what the public thinks an auctioneer can sell. I suppose that there are some specialty auctioneers that choose to sell a particular item only. And aside from the legal limitations on selling restricted items, there isn’t anything I couldn’t sell, right? She mentioned that her husband had kept the car for the past 27 years in the garage, along with a bunch of other ‘stuff’ that she wanted to sell. The car – a 1967 Jaguar E type – had been purchased by her husband 27 years ago with the intention of being a restoration project once he retired. Like many dreams, this one never came to fruition. Mother’s Day 2018, neglecting my own family, I spent time reminiscing and sharing auction stories with the widow. Together we developed a plan for accomplishing her goals in the shortest timeframe with the largest return. Since there were so many sentimental attachments in addition to a lifetime collection, she planned on taking loads of recycling to the scrapper during the auction hours in order to avoid any heartache, and then going out to eat. She had a couple of friends help her, and was able to scrap some quick cash while avoiding the emotional turmoil of watching the auction. This was a smart option for everyone. When it came to the car, the first comment that reached my ears was, “Oh my God, it’s hideous!” Not a very encouraging beginning and the car didn’t even run. Now, I’m not a car buff, but I am a good auctioneer and the first step is to get it advertised. So pictures are taken and the sale is listed on the internet. Then the magic happened. One of my workers thought to find and join a Jaguar car club on Facebook. Then we shared the upcoming auction featuring the 1969 Jaguar E Type. Continuing to network on social media proved to be a smart move. Before the auction date, the seller had received 3 substantial cash offers in the 5 figure range. This is when we knew we had something special. Apparently the hideous car was actually a diamond in the rough. Who knew? It is interesting to note that the chairman of the Jaguar club’s Facebook page had removed the auction picture because he wanted to buy the car for himself. But by that time, the word was out. In the end, it was a buyer generated by AuctionZip that won the bid – but it was the excellent social media networking that boosted the interest to all the right people, creating the perfect firestorm of interested bidders. 52,000.00 later, the Jaguar got a new owner and shipped to its new home in Beverly Hills, California leaving a very satisfied seller, buyer and auctioneer! This hideous car will always come to mind whenever someone asks, “Can you sell cars?” 26 • The Keystone Auctioneer Magazine

Items will be provided by the chapter in charge for the final round. It is the intention of the Pennsylvania Auctioneers Association that the contest be conducted as an actual auction; all sales are to be bona fide, actual sales, and all items will be sold to Farm Show spectators.

Each contestant will receive badges with his or her contestant number after the drawing for placement.

The PA Auctioneer Champion will receive a $200 cash prize, a laser-engraved plaque and a gavel. The 1st runner-up will receive a $100 cash prize, a laser-engraved plaque and a gavel. All finalists will receive Finalist’s Gavels (up to 10). The PA Rookie Auctioneer Champion and Top Female Competitor will be chosen from any qualifying contestants who have entered the contest. The rookie and top female auctioneer with the highest final score will be awarded the championship regardless of whether or not he or she advances to the finals round. If more than one rookie/female would advance to the finals round, the champions will be selected from the highest scores in the finals round. It will be possible for a rookie and/or female to win or place in the regular championship as well. The PA Rookie Auctioneer Champion and Top Female Competitor will receive a $100 cash prize, a laser-engraved plaque and a gavel. The top ten contestants will be announced by name in descending order and will receive gavels. At the close of the competition, the MC shall announce the Top Female Competitor first, then the Rookie Champion, followed by the 1st runner-up auctioneer champion, and finally the PA auctioneer champion. If the PA Auctioneer Champion chooses to enter the International Auctioneer Championship Competition sponsored by the National Auctioneers Association, the PAA will award an additional $350 toward his/her expenses in entering the IAC Championship Competition during the next scheduled NAA Conference.

Responsibilities of Winner

   

The PAA requests that the Auctioneer Champion and Rookie Champion be present at the Friday banquet during the annual conference for recognition and photo opportunities. The Auctioneer Champion shall automatically serve as a judge for the contest the following year, if available. Speaking engagements throughout the year for the Auctioneer Champion shall be scheduled when convenient. Laser engraving of the Auctioneer Champion’s name and year in which he/she won on the large trophy shall be the responsibility of the champion. It is suggested that a jeweler perform this task due to the complexity of the engraving. The Auctioneer Champion shall bring the trophy to the conference the following year.

P@@ History

The Pennsylvania Auctioneers Association was formed by a group of successful businessmen who knew that in order to provide a better business environment for themselves and strengthen their share of the auction market, they needed to work together. They invested in their futures by forming the PAA. Their purpose was to speak with one voice to the auction industry across the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, to the public, to governmental agencies, and to others, and in the process obtain tools to help them make sound and profitable decisions in their auction businesses. For 67 years, the PAA has been one of the best investments its members have made. The PAA has sought to establish and continually improve the standard of education, ethics and performance of its members. The Keystone Auctioneer Magazine • 29

Do you own a Long Ranger? A few words about repair services... The Long Ranger legacy spans 25 years of reliable service to auctioneers. Over this lifetime, several versions of the system were produced. As you can well imagine, there was also a lot of evolution in the electronic parts over this time period. Production of the Long Ranger was discontinued in early 2012 due to the discontinuance of a critical circuit board component. So a stockpile of this and other repair parts was created at the factory and SV2 made a commitment to servicing the existing systems in the field. The Long Ranger is an industrial quality, professional tool, supported by a first-rate manufacturer and dealer. Continued support for years to come is part of the product, just like it is for almost any other industrial tool made in the USA. Replacement belt pack and plug-on transmitters, and headset and lavaliere microphones are still available. Batteries and battery upgrades are also available through SV2 or the factory. More extensive repairs are completed at the factory. SV2 is your dealer and contact for parts and services. Call or email Gerry and crew whenever you need help or service for your Long Ranger system.

Your Long Rangers are going to be around for a long time. So are we.
