Scholarship Initiative

The CBA Scholarship Initiative Making the impossible possible. That’s what a scholarship can do for a highly motivated, highly qualified student who aspires to an education that is beyond the reach of his family’s financial capacity. Scholarship support is the deciding factor for students like this, providing them with a pathway from dreams to reality. Inspired by the vision of enhancing accessibility to CBA’s Lasallian education for in-need students, Brother Frank Byrne has launched the CBA Scholarship Initiative, with the goal of raising $2 million over the next three years. All members of the CBA community are invited to join this initiative, one which is critical to securing the future of a Lasallian education for many deserving students. Establishing a scholarship is one of the most meaningful ways to ensure that deserving students will continue to have an opportunity to receive an academically rigorous, faith-based education, regardless of their financial circumstances. Funding a scholarship is not just about students, it’s also about you. It offers you an opportunity to honor a loved one, a classmate, or a teacher; and to make a strong statement about your own values. When you fund a scholarship, you are not only supporting a student in financial need, you are encouraging him to excel in a program or activity that is most important to you. When students receive scholarships, their lives are forever changed. They will never forget the impact of your generosity. Neither will you.

What inspires me to give to CBA, among so many other worthy groups? I give because three generations of Brothers, faculty and parents have made students — young men like me — their sole priority. When I look back now, I realize how much

I needed CBA. Young men today need that same priority. So for me, it’s a natural impulse to give, to support CBA and the mission of St. John Baptist de La Salle.

Extending Access

Enhancing Leadership Merit Scholarships Scholarships help CBA enroll and retain outstanding students. They are vital in attracting the brightest, most talented and deserving applicants, thus enhancing CBA’s reputation and enriching the intellectual climate on campus. Academic scholarships may be established for students with a record of outstanding scholastic achievement. Talent scholarships may be established for students in the areas of music, language, service and the sciences.

Meet Arthur Adriano ’17 Arthur John Alvarez Adriano, a member of the class of 2017, is the grateful recipient of a one of several full scholarships funded annually by the Edward Hall Gmelich Scholarship Fund. “My Mom and Dad always wanted me to have a Christian education, a Catholic education,” Arthur says, “and they were really hoping for it in high school. They knew about CBA, but they knew that they would have to work very hard to be able to afford the tuition. “My Dad died in 2006. That put a dream that was both mine and my parents’ into jeopardy. My mother was afraid it would be impossible for me to attend CBA. We heard there were some scholarships available, so I applied. When Brother Frank called and told me that I had received a scholarship, it was a dream come true.”

The Edward Hall Gmelich Scholarship Fund, “Teddy’s Fund,” was established by Victoria and Justin Gmelich, in memory of their infant son. It provides scholarships for academically capable young men whose families could not otherwise afford a CBA education.

Arthur hopes to study medicine one day, and would like to become an oncologist. Having lost his father and, more recently other loved ones to cancer, he says, “I know their suffering, I know what they go through. As an oncologist, I hope I could make their suffering less.”

Meet Joseph Sanfratello ’12 It was a scholarship from the Lt. Dennis Zilinski Foundation that made it possible for Joseph Sanfratello ’12 to attend CBA. Today Joe is a student at Lehigh University, majoring in both computer science and business and particularly enjoying his work in systems software. “The experience I had at CBA will always be one of the fondest memories of my life,” he says. “I am forever thankful for being given the opportunity to receive a Lasallian education.” “CBA prepared me for the challenges that I face in both the classroom and around campus, giving me the determination and inner drive to succeed. CBA not only provided me with an excellent education but fostered me into the man I am today.”

The Lt. Dennis Zilinski Foundation and Memorial Fund awards several scholarships annually to CBA students who bring awareness of the value of military service to the CBA community and the community at large. The scholarships honor the memory of Dennis W. Zilinski II (CBA ’00, U.S. Military Academy ’04) who was killed in action in Iraq in 2005.

NAMED SCHOLARSHIPS Gifts in support of CBA’s scholarship program may be structured in various ways, to suit donors’ own philanthropic goals or estate planning.

Named Endowed Scholarships A named Endowed Scholarship is a permanent legacy of support for future generations of CBA students. An endowment may be established with a single outright gift, a gift fulfilled in installments over five years, or a deferred (estate) gift. Once the endowment is fully funded, a portion of its earnings each year provides for scholarship support, while the principal is retained in perpetuity for future growth. Endowed Partial Scholarship (Unrestricted Eligibility) MINIMUM ENDOWMENT $25,000

An Endowed Partial Scholarship provides an annual distribution of approximately $1,250. By electing to establish an endowment with unrestricted eligibility, a donor grants CBA the flexibility to award scholarship funding to deserving, qualified students as needed. Endowed Partial Scholarship (Specified Eligibility) MINIMUM ENDOWMENT $50,000

At this funding level, the Advancement Office will work with the donor to establish particular criteria for this scholarship according to their specific interests. Once the scholarship is fully funded, it will allow for an annual distribution of approximately $2,500. Endowed Full Scholarship MINIMUM ENDOWMENT $350,000

Donors who would like to name an endowed scholarship that covers the full tuition, books and fees of an individual student with financial need may select this option. The Advancement Office will work with donors to establish eligibility criteria for this scholarship according to their specific interests.

Named Annual Scholarships Named Annual Scholarships are funded directly by donors who undertake a four-year commitment to make yearly gifts at any of the levels described below. These funds are applied directly to the costs of educating qualified, deserving students.

The Academy Man Scholarship program has been established specifically to support students in financial need who have been referred to the CBA admissions process by NJ SEEDS and who have met CBA’s stringent admissions standards. The combination of CBA scholarships and extracurricular support from NJ SEEDS will offer these students an educational opportunity that can change their lives. Gifts of any size directed to CBA’s Academy Man Scholarship program are most welcome. Donors who wish to establish a Named Academy Man Scholarship may do so by funding either an Endowed Full Scholarship or an Annual Full Scholarship.

Annual Partial Scholarship (Unrestricted Eligibility) $2,500 YEARLY ($10,000 TOTAL)

Scholarships with unrestricted eligibility are applied to the tuition expenses of students who meet CBA’s academic and need-based standards. These scholarships offer CBA the broadest flexibility to award funding to deserving, qualified students as needed. Annual Partial Scholarship (Specified Eligibility) $5,000 YEARLY ($20,000 TOTAL)

At this funding level, the Advancement Office will work with the donor to establish particular criteria for this scholarship according to their specific interests. Annual Full Scholarship $15,000 YEARLY ($60,000 TOTAL)

Donors who would like to fund a full annual scholarship covering tuition, books and fees, may work with the Advancement Office to establish eligibility requirements for this scholarship according to their specific interests.

Founded in 1992, NJ SEEDS is a privately-funded nonprofit organization which identifies exceptionally motivated, high-achieving students from low-income families, and provides the academic and social support those students need to succeed in school environments far more challenging than those from which they come.

Look upon the children God has entrusted to you as the children of God himself. Have much more solicitude for their education and instruction than you would have for the children of a king. St. John Baptist de La Salle John Baptist de La Salle (1651-1719), founder of the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, was an educational pioneer. One of the first to advocate education for all, not just the affluent, his Institute established a network of quality schools throughout France that today extends around the globe.
