“Sailing is necessary” That popular South American aphorism has been quintessential to me in every way, from my finances to personal issues. I was only 22 when I was sailing the South Atlantic on a 295-foot fishing boat named API II.

or higher with sustained winds of at least 111 mph. Should we focus on the number of storms? Yes and no. The only storms most of us need to worry about are those that actually make landfall, which can have little correlation to the total number of storms in any given season. For example, 2010 was an extremely busy season, with 19 named storms and 12 hurricanes. Yet no hurricane, and only one tropical storm, made landfall in the US that year. On a lucky streak, Florida has not had a landfalling hurricane in the past eight years. Historically, North and South Carolina get many fewer landfallling hurricanes than Florida. And curiously, Georgia—which lies between Florida and the Carolinas—gets
the fewest of any of them. What does it mean for my vacation plans? Statistically, there is a very low risk that a storm will impact your vacation. Still, if you’re planning to vacation in Florida, the Gulf Coast, or the Caribbean during hurricane season, you might consider buying hurricane insurance. Typically, if your trip is cancelled or interrupted due to a storm, you can be refunded up to the limit of coverage. Note that in most cases, insurance must be purchased more than 24 hours before a hurricane is named. What do experts say about hurricane season 2014? Sigh. Depending on who you ask, this year’s hurricane season could be quieter than normal, about average, or stronger than

usual. In other words, it’s anyone’s guess. Here’s a rundown of predictions that have been made so far, starting with the most optimistic forecast: • Colorado State University’s Tropical Meteorology Project is forecasting a quiet 2014 Atlantic hurricane season, predicting that nine tropical storms will form, with three becoming full-fledged hurricanes. Track record: Meh. USA Today reported that, since 2000, the Colorado State University team has been reasonable accurate--coming within two hurricanes--only five out of 13 times. It’s also coming off two consecutive years of getting it wrong. In 2012, there were more than twice as many hurricanes as predicted, and in 2013, there were only two hurricanes when nine were originally predicted. • The Weather Channel also anticipates a hurricane season that’s just a tad quieter than normal, with 11 named tropical storms, including five that become hurricanes,

of which two will become major hurricanes. • The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) predicts that a nearnormal or belownormal hurricane season is likely this year. NOAA parses out its forecast with a 50 percent chance of a below-normal season (defined as nine or fewer named storms, four or fewer hurricanes, and one or fewer major hurricanes), a 40 percent chance of a near-normal season, and a 10 percent chance of an above-normal season. • A team at North Carolina State University’s Department of Marine, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences is predicting eight to 11 named storms, with four to six may growing strong enough to become hurricanes, and one to three that may become major hurricanes. • Global Weather Oscillations Inc. (GWO), says the 2014 hurricane season will be stronger and more dangerous than last year, with 17 named tropical storms, eight hurricanes and three major hurricanes. Track record: Very good. GWO is the only organization that correctly predicted the weak 2013 season. L4

hen is hurricane season? The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30 with the peak period from early August through the end of October. The Atlantic basin includes the entire Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico. Hurricanes coming from the Atlantic can impact vacations on the Southeast coast, all of Florida, and along the Gulf Coast from the Florida Panhandle to Texas. What’s typical? Based on historical weather records dating back to 1950, a typical year will bring 12 tropical storms with sustained winds of 39 mph, of which six turn into hurricanes with winds reaching 74 mph or greater, and three major hurricanes category 3

What type of user are you?
The social networks are a sample of different personality types and habits that humans can be categorized. There is always the one that passes through them only for curiosity; however we can find users completely dependent and with specific profiles ... which one are you? Here we describe some types.
The different profiles of internet users The Connected Enough with only seeing the number of friends or followers. Probably he/she has no idea who is who, but his/her triumph is seeing the constant growing number of contacts. He/she has no demur accepting friendship contacts even from Count Dracula. The Optimist The one who post pictures of sunsets with positive state-
ments and declares love to life and friendship. Everything is beautiful, everything is wonderful and the human being is the best inhabitant of this planet. The In Love One The cover or profile photo is with his/her partner and all posts reflect all the love among them and how they could not live without their other half. Always declaratory photos and comments of eternal love The World Savior Gets involved with International fights about saving the planet or the green bears from an island from who knows where. Never leaves the computer, becoming a
virtual fighter to show that we are destroying everything. Believes that giving “likes” on Facebook can change the world. The Dog’s Savior Common among female users. For example, it has been proved that an abandoned dog can produce more viral shares than any Palestine child’s story.
The Opponent He/she has a large network of connections and is dedicated to criticize even the color of the flour. Use long explanations to found his ideas against others. Believes he/ she is the only intelligent and well articulate and if someone dares contradict him/her could spend the night replicating. The say it all Use social media to tell his/her daily activities in an accurate and detail manner. Take pictures of the bread with butter that is eating, the taxi that is taking and replies to any nonsense comment. The addicted He/she communicates with family and friends entirely through social networks. Not giving a like to their comments becomes an insult and deny a request for friendship is a heresy. They live checking their profile every 5 minutes to see the result of their post. The first thing after they wake up is to check their profile and also the last thing at night before they go to bed. Complete addiction The Spy Only has Twitter or Facebook to know what others do. Their profiles are minimal, they are only involved to see the virtual life of the rest. They never make a comment and are always on the lookout Egocentric Their pictures are retouched and are closer to the Gods of Olympus than to the mortals. They understand they are beautiful,
wonderful and well spoken, then it is common to read how such a well chose entourage declare their love and wonderful position of success. The Sucks Up He/she is connected directly to his/her boss at work, the college professor or the successful friend. Gives “like” even when someone’s mother die. Give positive feedbacks to any comments or posts.
The Mother Everything revolves around the son or daughter, even though they are older than the pyramids. Show the world how their children are wonderful, intelligent and loving, though they have not visit her in the last 5 years. The Happy Especially in Facebook only uploads pictures and comments of how wonderful is his/her life, how he/she is happy, sophisticated and above of worldly problems. His/ her life seems a margarine advertisement, where the happy family gathers together all smiling and loving for breakfast. For sure there are more types ... if you know of any that is not here, tell us and we will add it.

is a place where you’re able to exercise with a team that enjoys being there just as much as you do; the owners, coaches and your fellow workout buddies. Ask anyone a question and they will go out of their way to help you, make sure you understand and stay with you
until you have succeeded. The Crossfit box has a new workout on the board everyday with certain limits you must “try.” I say try and not “do” because you go at your own pace with your own weight while still pushing yourself to your limit. When working out with other people, your body is stimulated to stay with the group. And no matter how out of breath the person is next to you, they will always motivate you to keep going. That’s where the “do” comes into play. When you first looked at the board you may have thought, “Yah. Okay. I can’t do that.” But,
when you’re done, you have accomplished something you said you would try but never thought you could actually “do”. There’s then a sense of achievement and appreciation for the team you are working with. The emotion that comes from a great workout is stronger than the outsider would think. There are feelings behind the sweat, that loud grunt when locking out a max “jerk” and when you have pushed yourself to the limit and succeeded. It’s the team you are a part of that’s making you better as an individual. And no matter what, don’t ever forget, “the last person that finishes is just as important as the first,” so never give up! The amazing story of success of a figure made based on marketing and scandals.
kim kardashian With millions of fans around the world, the public figure who has no artistic skills remains high.
what everyone is sure of is the audacity of Kim Kardashian since the beginning. Her entry into the celebrity’s world came through the release of a home pornographic video featuring herself and a rapper. But before a well-oiled marketing machine fueled by the press got a hold of the salacious incident, there seems to have been a very marketing-prone brain behind the scandalous finding, since good sources familiar with the details of the case indicate that Kim was behind it all. The truth is up for grabs, but one can’t help noticing that apart from the sex tape nothing really could’ve propelled the so-called celebrity to stardom, since Kim does not sing, does not dance, is not an actress or model, in short, can we blame one from wondering why she is famous? Adding insult to injury, her so-called stardom managed to impart celebrity status to the rest of the Kardashian family, as well as to those associated with the Kardashian sisters and mother. It’s not unusual that many celebrities use their private lives to move up their careers as singers, actors/actress or models. Kim does it just to be famous - and make money for being famous. The Kardashian money-machine is able to function despite the (huge) criticism she receives and the (many) mistakes she makes. Her TV show strives to portray the everyday situations of a millionaire, pretty and sophisticated family but cannot hide the fake glamour, the questionable taste and the all-too-often wrong points-of-view.
The power of Photoshop and editing To say that Kim Kardashian’s body is a staple of feminine beauty is a rather dangerous statement. The photos that are not retouched and make out of the powerful filter of the environment that manages her image shows a woman with exaggerated curves, always
personality is always edited in order to show a person in some kind of contemplation of the world of mortals, with leisurely, short phrases and slow body movements. She always looks like she is floating.
on the edge of weight excess and showing many attributes carved within surgery rooms. In many occasions, Kardashian falls into ridicule with dresses and clothes which emphasize her curves so much that falling into vulgarity becomes unavoidable and even end up showing her flaws, especially the size of her backsides. It’s this kind of wardrobe worn by her that always places her in the middle of the storm, but nothing is too much for Kim, her power to surprise is constant. Editions of her photos are so integral to the process that when they appear before they were edited it seems we are looking at another person. Even in her TV show,
HER MUCH-PUBLICIZED PRIVATE LIFE Since her “private” porn video, Kim’s private life became public in the broadest sense of the idea. When she is not being filmed in her day-to-day reality show activities, she is always “persecuted” by a flock of paparazzi that record her every move, no matter if it is coming out of the gym or buying bread, everything in the Kardashian family is news. And if all of this weren’t enough she uploads pictures of herself on her twitter account and any other social networks. She’s married three times, and in the second time she promoted not only her union, but her divorce as well; and her most-recent marriage in France was turned into a world’s event. Celebrities need an heir, and in this case, being the baby’s last name West, she had no better idea other than giving North as the first name of her daughter. There is already speculation of South for the next arrival... seems strange? Well, we can expect everything from Kim Kardashian, even a child named South West. L4

ment for their services? Otherwise, you may be on the hook for additional costs if the insurance settlement does not cover all of the emergency services. c. Most remediation companies require that you sign a contract assigning insurance proceeds to them. Before you sign, confirm that you will not be responsible for additional costs not covered by your insurance company. Put it in writing. d. Take photographs before the clean up begins. You will want to show those photographs to your insurance adjuster.

F
rom an insurance point of view, when an emergency strikes, what do you do? According to a recent conversation with Public Adjuster Maria Fernandez from Morcate Insurance Consulting: • First of all, make sure that you, your family and your pets are safe. • Call 911 if the incident is lifethreatening. • If you can safely return to your property, do what is necessary to protect your property from further damage, such as turning off the burners or shutting off the water. Now, get ready to start making phone calls… You have a couple of options re-
garding how to proceed. You can take charge and contact your insurance carrier, emergency service companies and obtain estimates for the cost of repairs. Or you can contract a Public Adjuster who will do the work for you. If you make the contacts yourself, here is what you will need to do:
1
Once the insurance adjuster arrives he or she will want to inspect the damages to find out how and when the loss took place.
c. Within 24 hours, you should receive a call from the carrier´s insurance adjuster who will make an appointment to inspect your damages. d. Let your insurance carrier know you whether you will need emergency cleanup or repairs.
2
Next, if you need emergency cleanup or repairs,
call a service company that specializes in emergency remediation. This company will

ing up fire debris or extracting water from your home.
a. Ask the emergency remediation company for an estimate; and be prepared to negotiate a price for the emergency services. b. Will the emergency services company accept the insurance company´s payment as full pay-
a. Insurance adjusters are required by the carrier to determine the date, cause and time of loss regarding how and when your damages occurred. These factors may be crucial in determining whether or not you have coverage for this loss. b. Equally important is producing needed documentation regarding personal belongings damaged in the loss. Your shoes were ruined? You may be asked to produce receipts indicating when and where they were purchased, and how much you paid for them. Stove damaged in the fire? The insurance company will need the make and model.
4
Based on the insurance adjuster´s visual inspec-
tion, he will produce an estimate of repairs for your property. The adjuster then submits the facts of the loss
and the estimate to the insurance company.
This in-
formation is used by the carrier to (a) determine if your loss is covered by your policy and (b) determine how much the carrier will pay towards your repairs.
If you are familiar with the terms of your policy, you will better understand what will be covered and what will not. For example, did you know that for a pipe burst, most insurance policies will cover breaking into the wall to access the pipe, but do not cover the repair to the pipe itself? Two important points to remember when working with your insurance carrier: First, whatever settlement you receive will be less your deductible. Most policies carry deductibles ranging between $250 - $2,500 and more. Check the Declarations Page on your policy for your deductible. Second, the amount offered by your carrier for the repairs is not written in stone. This amount can be negotiated if you feel it is not enough to cover the cost of your repairs. Finding a good Realtor: 10 basic ideas
www.looking4online.com
Real Estate
happy ending or become a huge headache. Thus, this basic guide for you to analyze and think about before making decisions.
1
Start asking people who have had good experiences with real estate professionals. An indication from someone that you trust is a huge step.
2
If you have a relative or a very close friend in the real estate market, have an open and frank discussion with them of what your expectations are before beginning. Personal problems arise very often in such situations, like when you discover that your nephew or friend was not the professional that you imagined.
3
Have in mind this is a unique and uncommon experience for you. Don’t be afraid to ask questions or take your time to analyze the information they provide you with; a real estate broker is there to help you make the right decisions.
4
A good professional will have a good and open discussion with you. They will try to know what you WANT, what CAN be done, and finally what SHOULD be done. This is essential for everyone. Be cautious - when everything is possible and easy to obtain then something might not be right or might not happen at the end.
5
The majority of us are bilingual but in such cases the best thing is to seek for professionals in our own language. It is extremely important to understand all the steps that make a real estate transaction to the minimum detail.
6
Business practices are changing; professionals who are entering the market have new trends in customer relations. Now there is a new vision: To see things from the client’s point-of-view at all times in order to offer a high quality service and protect their interests.
7
The 2008 housing bubble disaster brought major changes in the way we understand the Real Estate market. People are tired of small letters, harmful contracts and banks hungry for money. Find a professional who is always willing to explain the sensitive points and show you all the options. Many times a well said NO right now will save you thousands of dollars in the future.
8
Consider that any real estate licensee have had Real Estate
law training and constantly goes through specific control procedures. That gives you a guarantee in many ways, so do not be swayed by what your neighbors think about the current market and its options. Look for a professional. ALWAYS ask who knows and not who believes to know.
9
No one will charge you for a consultation. Real State does not work as a doctor’s office. Do not be afraid to take your phone and present your concerns to a real estate professional, even a small one. In today’s world there aren’t big or small customers, all of them are an important part of a roster.
10
And finally, it is difficult for a real estate licensee to be a dishonest person, the difference is in the treatment and service they offer to clients; the good protection of their client’s interests from banks and institutions, or the energy they dedicate to you case. The vast majority are competent professionals, some more, some less ... It’s just a matter of knowing how to find one. L4

The Star Wars Question
L
ast May saw the commencement of principal photography for the new Star Wars film. More than ever, audiences all around the globe have been raising the unavoidable question: Is it going to be any good? The doubts are not unfounded, since the last trilogy of the Saga didn’t live up to expectations; a lot of fans didn’t like the films at all whilst others, albeit liking them, agreed they pale in comparison to the first three that enraptured audiences in the 70’s and 80’s. That preoccupation is heightened by other issues that have attached themselves to the Star Wars legacy, such as Lucasfilm being bought by Disney in 2012, George Lucas becoming only a consultant, the revelation by Disney that not only this new film is the first of a new trilogy but also there will be stand-alone films in between them, the change in screenwriters and late hiring of director J.J. Abrams, the change in the release date, and last but to least, the short timeframe during which those films will be made. Yes, there are a lot of issues, but if you ask me they are not to be worried about. Tradition kept
First of all, when Disney bought Pixar from Steve Jobs it kept the structure of the company unchanged and as we all know Pixar kept delivering films with the same quality as before; the same happened when Disney bought Marvel, leaving the creative part untouched and hiring directors who could take Marvel’s superheroes to the next level. So when Disney purchased Lucasfilm it became pretty clear the same would happen: Bob Eiger (CEO of Disney) accepted George Lucas’ choice for the new president of Lucasfilm, Kathleen Kennedy, simply the best producer for the job, being more than used to franchise science-fiction trilogies, having produced all Indiana Jones films (For Lucasfilm, by the way), all Jurassic Park films, all Back To The Future films, just to name a few examples (She’s also produced all Spielberg
films from the 80s’ to this day). The reduced participation of George Lucas is also not an issue; the only film he had directed from the original trilogy was the original “Star Wars” (“The Empire Strikes Back” was directed by Irvin Kershner and “Return of the Jedi” by Richard Marquand, both under his supervision) and the new trilogy showed us that he could’ve used some help as well; maybe by letting other people direct and acting only as executive producer and supervisor the new trilogy would’ve been more in touch with the fans of the original trilogy (We should not forget that when Lucas started filming “The Phantom Menace” it was his first time in the director’s chair in over two decades). George Lucas’ biggest strength was always supplying stories for the films; he hasn’t written all Star Wars scripts (As he hasn’t directed all Star Wars films), but he’s always been the story supplier. And that’s what he’s doing now as well, what brings us to the next issue - the change in screenwriters. The new old scribe
That matter is totally justified, since Michael Arndt (“Toy Story 3”, “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire”, Oscar-winner for “Little Miss Sunshine”), the original screenwriter, albeit being very talented, wanted to focus more on new characters; he’s been replaced by Lawrence Kasdan, brought to deliver what Star Wars fans expect:
“old Star Wars”, bringing back Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Han Solo, just to name a few. That was George Lucas’ plan all around, having hired (Albeit unofficially) the correspondent actors (Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Harrison Ford, respectively) even before selling Lucasfilm to Disney. It is essential to remember that it was Lawrence Kasdan who wrote “The Empire Strikes Back”, “Return of the Jedi” and “Raiders of the Lost Ark”, i.e., you cannot go wrong with this guy. By the way, Kasdan will be the writer-director of one of the stand-alone films as well, so Disney indeed seems to know what it’s doing (Another recent hiring for another stand-alone is the “Godzilla” director, Gareth Edwards). In case the reader doesn’t know what a stand-alone film is, it’s a film parallel to the trilogy films (Taking place whenever - past, present or future) based on a particular character (For instance, Boba Fett, Jabba the Hutt, Han Solo, Yoda, etc.) to be released in the years the trilogy films are being made, thus supplying the Star Wars consumer market every year with new adventures taking place “A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away…”. Time will tell
The Star Wars connoisseur should ask then, “Wait a minute, a Star Wars film takes three years to make, how come they’re going to make them in only two?”, and this is a valid question, with an even more valid answer. The old Star Wars films took three years to be made because Lucas & Co. had to invent the technology in order to make them, and that is also true to the latest ones (Lucas “experimented” with the digital technology on James Cameron’s “The Abyss” and “Terminator 2” and on Spielberg’s “Jurassic Park” in order to start releasing more Star Wars films and perfect it, starting with the Special Edition of the old Star Wars trilogy and achieving the desired result through the new one), but today the digital technology is more than well-developed, thus allowing for films relying on such kind of special effects as is the case of the Star Wars films, to be made

Wars tamed that wild terrain in the calendar. So every Star Wars film should be released in May and because of the delay caused by changing screenwriters and in hiring Abrams it seems Star Wars VII will be released during Christmas time 2015 (Producer Kennedy said recently all others shall be released in May), which to me is a shame. On the other hand, one cannot have its cake and eat it too, so I settle for having another Star Wars film, and - hopefully - a great one. L4

(“Star Trek” and “Star Trek: Into Darkness”) in order to try to direct “something like Star Wars”. That was confirmed by the “more Star Wars” approach and pace of such latest Star Trek films, having trekkies all over the world complain that the director made Star Trek “too Star Wars-ish”. If that isn’t proof enough Abrams is the right man for the job, I cannot think of a better one. Because his attachment to the Star Trek franchise, it took some time for him to “set himself free” and move over to the Star Wars arena (He will still be producing the Star Trek films, which will have another director) and that’s why the Star Wars VII shooting had to be delayed and therefore causing the release date to be postponed. Now, that is the only issue bothering me; every Star Wars film has been released between May 20th and 25th, a tradition created by Fox when, not believing in the potential of the original film in 1977, slated it to be released in May, deeming it not “Christmas worthy”. Well, they were oh so wrong and the slate of films we see released in May today is because Star

Abrams (Of “Lost”, “Mission Impossible 3” and “Super 8” fame) seems to be an individual who can cope with a lot of pressure, being involved in several projects at once, both on TV and on the silver screen; but that is not the main reason why he was hired to direct the new Star Wars trilogy - a long time Star Wars fan, Abrams never hid he got attached to the most recent slate of Star Trek films

rules for success
Our world is the city or the neighborhood in which we live, it’s a good idea to start there. At Looking For Something we believe in the power of the printed paper. The same way we use the web through www.looking4online. com and the global social networks, we also communicate with people through our printed edition by distributing it for free.
We are a social network on paper.
That’s why we have our classifieds for free, for people to engage, communicate and build bridges between them. We are the most efficient exposure platform due to our unique and innovative distribution system, the most daring and different content, and above all, for understanding that “the market”, “clients” and “points-of-view” are actually made by people. We are all human beings, and through this principle we see things and we convey our messages in a clear way. We are a medium made by people for people.
Think outside the box. Nowadays everything that is taught or used as a sure thing blows up in minutes. New technologies, procedures or social customs are created at a frantic speed rate.
The technology which will be used in the next 6 years has not yet been invented.
Therefore, it is important to be different now. Sure, breaking rules does not mean not to obey
A strong and creative visual In order to increase the impact of Looking For Something, we have our covers be our own signature. They are strong, colorful and with advanced design. We do understand that the first impression is the one that counts.

Black and white works for classic films or gala events, but not to sell your services. Color ads are over 90% more powerful than black and white ones. That is why all our pages are in full color.
Repetition and consistency A powerful offer with a great design makes for an effective ammunition to achieve your goals, but a single shot loses its efficacy over time. The repetition of your ad with the consistency of your campaign will expand the potential of success. The longer your ad is in front of your target audience, the bigger its chances of receiving responses. The anatomy of the success of your ad: keep it simple. BOAT Just a simple word, evokes so much of what the state of Florida and the South Florida community is drawn to. So many people are here, live for, are involved in, enjoy, and make their living from... Boats.
Y
es, they come in a huge variety. Their sizes, type, (sail or powered), all determine what where & how, we can do & see from them. The choices are endless & getting bigger. We all know that boating is big business. But how does a simple word, like Boat, affect our lives, even on a daily basis? In reality, boats can offer people a slow escape for a short time, in their lives. If you take a cruise, you get to escape into another world, of comfort & luxury that most of us do not live in. The ship moves slowly thru the water, bringing us to another town or city or natural area, in many of the great places to visit in the world. It’s a great, long “boat ride”. We also need to bow to the ships that carry cargo around the world. From port to port, a boat
moves almost every item we own or consume. I cannot even describe in a few sentences, how deep the impact is of “cargo boats” (ships) have on us all. I own a small Boston Whaler. It’s a very basic, yet safe & reliable boat. Every day, when I awake, I look to see my “munchkin”, my wife, next to me & then, look out to my Whaler, tied up, stable & secure in her slip. There starts my day. Boats... I may have a coffee on the patio, & note a work barge going to repair or build dockage, for Boats... When I arrive home & play with my dogs, out back, I see a large boat (yacht) or maybe a sailboat slip by,
Take a look around you & you will see boats & see so many ways that they can bring happiness, calm, & relaxation to our lives.
Captain Gary is a 40 year resident & business owner in the S. Florida area. He is an experienced boat captain & has owned a variety of boats, both sail & powered. He also a private pilot & enjoys flying to new adventures & places with his wife & family.
going to...? Like I have done all my life, when I look up to the sky & see an airplane, I sometimes think of where they (boat or plane) are going or coming from & the people that they carry. Boats are no different than planes, only slower. A boat can carry one or 2 people, or it can be a larger boat (cruise ship) carrying thousands, and there are lots of boats in various sizes and shapes in between, but remember, it’s still a boat, they all float. Where did the people who created languages, get Boat, Yacht, Ship, Skiff, Dinghy, Pram, &....? From? After all, they are all just different boats... They all float. We occasionally take a trip to the west coast of the state to Ft. Myers Beach. When we get up & set out on our Boston Whaler, for a nice day trip to Sanibel / Captiva, we get to explore some of the greatest spots in the state. Having a nice safe day, on the water, on our boat, offers us relaxation & getting close to nature to really “taste” what Flor-
ida is all about. To be out in & with the beautiful birds & wildlife on the west coast of the state is so nice. On more than one occasion, we have had river dolphins alongside the boat coming up to say “hi”. Many times they cruise along behind us in our wave, having fun. This is one of the reasons I love small boats. They can go almost anywhere. They are great for exploring the “back roads” of the waterways... Larger boats & yachts, offer more comfort & luxury , & give people the opportunity to “live” on board a boat for days, or more, at a time. I have enjoyed many a weekend on an 11 meter “yacht” in the Bahamas. What a great way to experience all that the Bahamian blue waters have to offer. Staying on a larger boat for a few days is great fun. Take a look around you & you will see boats & see so many ways that they can bring happiness, calm, & relaxation to our lives. They show up in driveways, house yards, boat yards, marinas, and
boat trailer ramps. Yes, they will bring frustration, stress, If we let them. Like any machine they must be maintained to be safe & reliable. As a boat captain & private pilot, I always stress, maintenance and “Safety First”. Know your limits & know that in general, the machines are usually capable of more than we are. In boating as in flying, in anything that we do in life, stay within your limits of skill & capability & you will usually come out safe & having had a good experience. Boat... A simple word that can bring so much to our lives. We can rent one, borrow one, go with someone that owns one.....So Go... Get out & see the world... on a Boat. In the next issue I will take a look into weather & how it relates to our lives, both on & off the land, air & sea. L4 “Be Safe Out There” “Captain Gary”

everything worked as any damage could be transformed into the ultimate nightmare. around noon we were in the most peaceful of stills. We helped looking for a Spanish sailor who had fallen off another vessel 12 hours previously, and we went back to our normal activity but with a different flavor - the first time realization of how small we are before nature. The trip took 73 days and we returned with a hold full of fish. Fortune had finally joined us.
THE END OF API II? The ship that P. B. mentions in his testimony almost came to an end in June 2001 when it caught fire in the high open sea killing seven of its crew who were closed in the lower deck by order of the captain to save the rest of the ship. It was towed to port and 24 months later it was remodeled. It continues to sail in the South Atlantic. L4

In short, that fishing season would not be the best, but we had an excellent boat and very modern for the time, with an experienced crew of Spaniards and Argentines and a famous fishing captain for good fortune. The first days were very calm with little fishing and good weather, the British navy airplanes being the only thing that broke our routine. But anyone who’s sailed down the parallel 40 knows that over there things can change in minutes. That morning I had breakfast and went to the deck to have a smoke when I realized that the seagulls that had been with us for weeks were gone. A bad sign, which didn’t take long to manifest with the arrival
of a cold front with heavy sea not seen in a long time at this time of the year. What began with a choppy sea turned in a couple of hours into the worst storm many of us couldn’t imagine possible. There were dozens of fishing boats caught by bad weather in a region of the planet where two armies had just fought a war. In short, we were left to our own devices and praying that everything worked as any damage could be transformed into the ultimate nightmare. The first hours were difficult but by nightfall things worsened. I took my turn steering the boat as a spotlight illuminating the foredeck threw light on the rising walls of water, giving us a really terrifying play of light and shadows. What was supposed to be a couple of hours of steering became an overnight shift, since half the crew was totally broken due to boat roll. On the radio we heard calls for help and man overboard reports which could not be assisted because of the seriousness of the situation. Weathering the storm, we crossed the English exclusion zone undisturbed as they too would be in serious trouble or unable to take off or leave the port. At dawn the worst was over and

The sailor and the storm We were a crew of 45, and the war over Las Malvinas had completely changed the fiscal control of those waters, now held by the British navy, which made its presence felt with Sea King helicopters flying over our deck looking for who knows what, but we suspected that it was the most famous Russian way to spy the American fleet - through spies disguised as fishing boats - that put the British so nervous. Political motives aside, our biggest frustration was because the best fishing area was within the exclusion zone that Her Majesty’s navy was willing to take care of, preventing any vessel bearing an Argentinian flag to enter, which was precisely our case. We were focused in the capture of pollock but luck was not on our side; furthermore, boats from all around the world came to navigate those latitudes due to the large number of fishing permits that the islands government was issuing.

Ten Things All Car & Truck Drivers Should Know About Motorcycles
1
Over half of all fatal motorcycle crashes involve another vehicle. Most of the time, the car or truck driver, not the motorcyclist, is at fault. There are a lot more cars and trucks than motorcycles on the road, and some drivers don’t “recognize” a motorcycle – they ignore it (usually unintentionally).
2
Because of its narrow profile, a motorcycle can be easily hidden in a car’s blind spots (door/ roof pillars) or masked by objects or backgrounds outside a car (bushes, fences, bridges, etc). Take an extra moment to look for motorcycles, whether you’re changing lanes or turning at intersections.
3
Because of its small size, a motorcycle may look farther away than it is. It may also be difficult to judge a motorcycle’s speed. When checking traffic to turn at an intersection or into (or out of) a driveway, predict a motorcycle is closer than it looks. Motorcyclists often slow by downshifting or merely rolling off the throttle, thus not activating the brake light. Allow more following distance, say 3 or 4 seconds. At intersections, predict a motorcyclist may slow down without visual warning.
4
5
Motorcyclists often adjust position within a lane to be seen more easily and to minimize the effects of road debris, passing vehicles, and wind. Understand that motorcyclists adjust lane position for a purpose, not to be reckless or show off or to allow you to share the lane with them. Turn signals on a motorcycle usually are not selfcanceling, thus some riders (especially beginners) sometimes forget to turn them off after a turn or lane change. Make sure a motorcycle’s signal is for real.

8
Stopping distance for motorcycles is nearly the same as for cars, but slippery pavement makes stopping quickly difficult. Allow more following distance behind a motorcycle because you can’t always stop “on a dime.”
7
Maneuverability is one of a motorcycle’s better characteristics, especially at slower speeds and with good road conditions, but don’t expect a motorcyclist to always be able to dodge out of the way.
9
When a motorcycle is in motion, see more than the motorcycle – see the person under the helmet, who could be your friend, neighbor, or relative. If a driver crashes into a motorcyclist, bicyclist, or pedestrian and causes serious injury, the driver would likely never forgive himself/herself.

1. Offset Capital Gains and Capital Losses
As an individual taxpayer, you have capital gain and loss strategies that you can use for your benefit. We’ll get to those in a moment. First, keep these rules in mind when planning your capital gains and losses: 1. Short-term capital gains and ordinary income are taxed at rates of up to 35 percent. 2. Long-term capital gains are taxed at rates of up to 15 percent (0 percent if you are taxed at a regular rate of 15 percent or less). 3. If personal capital losses exceed personal capital gains, you may deduct up to $3,000 in losses and carry forward those losses in excess of the $3,000. 4. Long-term gains and losses are offset before application against short-term gains and losses. Strategy1.
Offset short-term gains subject to the 35 percent tax rate with long-term losses (15 percent tax rate). In other words, kill 35 percent taxes with 15 percent losses (e.g., sell stocks held more than one year that produce a loss to offset gains from stock held one year or less). Strategy 2. Use long-term losses to create the $3,000 deduction allowed against ordinary income. Again, you are trying to use the 15 percent loss to kill a 35 percent tax (or a 0 percent loss to kill a 15 percent tax, if your tax bracket is lower). Strategy 3. If you have lots of capital losses and the $3,000 allowance is looking extra tiny, sell assets to create offsetting gains. Strategy 4. As an individual investor, avoid the wash sale rule. If you sell a stock or other security and purchase substantially identical stock or securities within 30 days before the date of sale or after the date of sale, you may not recognize any loss on that sale. Therefore, if you want to keep the almost identical stock position but also recognize a loss, you need to roll the dice for more than 30 days.
2. Give Appreciated Stock to Charity
The stock market has done well recently, and you could easily have appreciated stock in your portfolio. If you are going to make a donation to a charity, consider appreciated stock rather than cash, because a donation of appreciated stock gives you more tax benefit. “Did you say more tax benefit?” Yes. It works like this: Benefit 1: You deduct the fair market value of the stock.3 Benefit 2: You don’t pay taxes on the appreciation. Example. You bought a publicly traded
3. Don’t Gift Stock with Losses
If you could sell a publicly traded stock at a loss, DO NOT give that stock to a 501(c)(3) charity. Why? If you sell the stock, you have a tax loss that you can deduct. If you give the stock to a charity, you get no deduction for the loss—in other words, you can just kiss that loss good-bye. The solution: Sell the stock first to create the tax-deductible loss. Then give the cash realized to the charity. Example. You bought a stock for $10,000 and it’s now worth $1,000. If you
Planning note. In both cases, the charity gets $1,000. But with the sell-the-stock-at-a-loss-andthendonate strategy, you gain a $9,000 tax deduction (total deductions: $10,000). L4

Instead, do this: Sell the stock. Collect $1,000 in cash from the stock sale. Give the $1,000 to the charity. Deduct the $1,000 charitable donation. Claim a tax deduction for your $9,000 stock loss.

In this article, you’ll learn: How to offset capital gains and losses When to give appreciated stock to charity Why you should not give tax-loss stock to charity
Two rules to know: Your deduction for donating appreciated stock to a 501(c)(3) organization may not exceed 30 percent of your adjusted gross income (computed without any net operating loss carryback). If your publicly traded stock donation exceeds the 30 percent, no problem. Tax law allows you to carry forward the excess until used, for up to five years.
You deduct $1,000 (fair market value). The charity receives $1,000 (value of the stock). You just kissed your $9,000 taxloss deduction good-bye.

The Mediterranean cuisine arrives to Port St. Lucie
The Famous Olive Oil
P
erhaps Perhaps the oldest vegetable oil in the world, olive oil is one of the pillars of the Mediterranean cuisine and the noblest ingredient of modern cuisine; it is extracted from freshly collected fruit of the olive tree, our famous olive. It comes in different qualities, depending on the type of process used to collect it and cure it. The European Union is very zealous about the labeling of the different types and qualities, especially in Spain, where it’s regulated through a firm and controlled manner in order to avoid deviation of quality. Without doubt, its beneficial powers to human health are varied and throughout its long history on the tables and in the kitchens of the world it’s been used in an infinite number of ways and recipes. Since the Egyptians, Phoenicians and Romans, olive oil’s history and traces of ancient use along the coast of the Mediterranean and its acceptance is already global and complete in all cuisines and cultures. Olive oil is used from helping control diabetes, cholesterol and hypertension, to obtaining different aromas and flavors, which is highly appreciated in modern cuisine. That said, introduce or further the use of olive oil on your table; both your health and your palate will appreciate it.
Fernando’s Dock Side & Grill ways, seafood, grilled meats and a good variety of fish makes it easy to find a dish of anybody’s choice. Different sandwiches round out the culinary collection. Good service, excellent food and reasonable prices is what you can find at Fernando’s Dock Side & Grill. At Fernando’s the check may be the same as in any modest Italian restaurant in the area, and in the times we live this is not a minor issue. The portions are generous and they have a reasonable wine selection without any eccentricities. To be honest, it’s been a long time since we’ve encountered a place where the concept of good, tasty and affordable food is followed. I guess we needed a good place with
Mediterranean cuisine and Fernando’s seems to be here to stay. With indoor and outside tables for summer nights, dinning under the light of the moon sounds like a good idea. Worth a visit! You will definitely not regret it. L4

hen we say Mediterranean cuisine we may not think of Portugal because that country faces the Atlantic. Nevertheless, it would not be a wrong idea, since the Portuguese cuisine was one of the pillars of the famous Mediterranean trend of cooking and use of ingredients. Portuguese Chef Fernando Dovale opened his restaurant in a nice place in the middle of Port St Lucie and lives up to the Mediterranean concept. The table service is first class and his team is led by João, his squire in the lounge, since Fernando is tucked in his kitchen giving shape to a menu with a Mediterranean face and a Portuguese hand.
