I am Pablo Prado, an architect with a solid background in design and a constant curiosity in human expressions. I’m interested in the co-existence of cities and architecture and the long narrative in their design elements of the context where they exist. I have always believed that architecture plays a significant role in a society’s quality of life. My work in the practice has taught me that architecture can and should transcend its formal qualities; it involves people and demands dialogue to develop innovative solutions. I’m inspired by listening to, learning from and contributing to those conversations. As Mexico is my home country, I have a strong background in Mexican design and I offer an international approach, as I have also studied abroad in the United States and Europe. My professional experience has allowed me to approach design from different perspectives. Teamwork is an essential part of any project I take on, as I believe that creating architecture is an extensive process that calls for multiple points of view and areas of expertise to create solutions beyond the default.

Common Ground and parklet Typology: Mixed-use 2018 Location: Mexico City, MX 89+24m2 Internship project. Partly executed Conceptual design — Construction documents Participative design is a tool that I developed by making this project. An office re-location to a renovated building created an empty story and a broken link between the retail and commercial spaces on the ground floor and the offices on the upper floors. Based on understanding the different needs of all the people at the building, I developed an experimental typology and had the opportunity to prototype and later, expand the project to street. The focus was to extend the public spaces inside the building, creating amenity for the building’s users and also for the general public in the neighborhood.
The result is a space that invites everyone to do things that were missing in an office environment. The space invites people to relax for a lunch break, take a nap, socialise or learn about the neighborhood through materials provided by the building. It’s an open, flexible and adaptable space. We decided to call this project “Common Ground” (Piso Común), as it is a shared space for different users. The building’s users embraced the project and due to its success we complemented it with a parklet structure on the street level.

In a car-oriented city like Mexico City, it is hard to push forward the idea of sacrificing parking spaces for a project oriented to public space. The neighborhood didn’t have any regulations related to adapting parking spaces into something else. We had to push the idea into different areas for it to be developed. It didn’t take long for people to realise that the area of two parking spaces (24m2) can have a much more meaningful function than parking cars. We started positioning urban furniture on the site and users started having meetings, lunch breaks and all kind of activities there.

This project complements the “Common Ground” project with a pedestrian-scale approach on the street. These two projects work together by extending the public spaces to what feels better in different situations. This project is being reviewed by the local authorities with construction to begin after approval.

Trevor Paglen at Tamayo Museum Typology: Exhibition design 2017 Location: Mexico City, MX 480m2 Internship project. Executed Conceptual design
At my internship at Tamayo Contemporary Art Museum I discovered new ways of using my architectural and design skills in new different ways related entirely to an educational program and to the exhibition of artworks. After a couple of months working at the Educational Department in the Museum, I developed a spacial design proposal to re-think the museum’s work spaces. This proposal was executed in the Educational Department. Later, the curatorial and exhibition design team asked for my assistance for the upcoming exhibition at the museum. I contributed with the conceptual and spacial design, 3D solutions and modelling for Trevor Paglen’s temporary exhibition. Room 1 from gallery 6. Artworks by Trevor Paglen.

Urban Topography Type: Art piece 2019 Location: Mexico City, MX Commissioned project — Reurbano. Conceptual design — Execution
The itinerant gallery guadalajara90210 based in Guadalajara, Mexico, started a new experimental project in Mexico City. They selected young architects and designers interested in developing concepts beyond design to create an installation in a building under construction. They invited Reurbano to create an art installation. I was asked, together with Hugo Vargas, to conceive an installation. After the design process and the conceptualization, we came together with a piece that creates a dialogue between raw materials involved in construction and natural materials. The exhibition was a success and included works by other renowned architects such as Frida Escobedo and Rozana Montiel. Conceptual sketch fro Urban Topography.

Museum of Language Typology: Museum 2019 Location: London, UK 10,012m2 Thesis project - Bachelor’s Degree Conceptual design - Architectural design and Construction Documents The world is home to more than 7,000 languages and yet we will lack a central resource that documents and celebrates this diversity. The idea for this project started with the open call for a competition by Archasm. I decided to take the project and develop it for my thesis project.
Setting back for addition of public space
My concept evolves from research and understanding around the idea that each of the world’s languages has its own architecture, just as each architectural practice has its own language. Working with this concept helped me develop a building that is integrated into the urban and social context by focusing on the public space and the connections to the existing urban infrastructure, while at the same time inserting itself as an urban landmark.

The museum’s development in the site is defined by giving priority to public space. The museum offers visitors several ways to explore the building by appreciating the existing urban infrastructure and taking advantage of the site views.

Urban Clusters Urban design 2019 Location: Mexico City, MX Research project at Reurbano Research — Conceptual design
Reurbano’s strategy of development in Mexico City is defined by urban clusters. This means that instead of creating an isolated project in one location, the approach is to be part of the neighborhood and improve the existing urban potential by adding new amenities to the city through architectural projects. This strategy was initially executed in Mexico City’s Juarez neighborhood, where the streets had a drastic improvement through strategic small interventions. At the architecture and design department, we carried out a constant research for new possible urban clusters in Mexico City. This urban clusters were on an urban scale and had to provide an improvement to the existing social, cultural and urban context. We came to 3 different solutions: Caminito a San Juan (in collaboration with Gehl Architects), Hidalgo Corridor and Plaza Giordano Bruno.

Zuidas Towers Typology: Mixed-use 2017 Location: Amsterdam, NL 32,950m2 Academic project Conceptual design — Architectural design MASSING STRATEGY
The regeneration of urban areas by inserting mixed-use architectural projects was the starting point for the development of Zuidas, one of the biggest new developments in Amsterdam. The urban plan for this site required two towers, one for medium-term housing for visitors to Amsterdam and one for offices. In addition, the plan asked for amenities for the users of the building and the area. I developed this project during a semester abroad at the Czech Technical University in Prague.

Amenities and the urban context 11
I wanted to create a project that would add to the urban infrastructure, so I designed an auditorium-like public square with green areas and outdoor seating open for the public in a space connecting the site’s two towers. The public character of the building intends to make it attractive not only for the direct users, but also for the in the neighborhood, and an attraction center in Amsterdam. The ground floor complements the existing urban program with restaurants and cafés. For the function of the building, by creating a loop-like shape and continuous connections in the building, I integrated the different components in the architectural program. With this solution, users of the building can easily go from one tower to the other and through the tower’s amenities including convention rooms, gyms, a wellness center, a swimming pool and classrooms for community activities.
