PACC DAY 2020

Ay m a n Ha m d e h Sc ho l arship

Make sure to apply at: paccusa.org Deadline: October 2020 On October 6th, 2015 our community lost a loving father, husband, son, uncle, brother, and friend in Ayman Hamdeh. Though he lived a short life, leaving us at the age of 32, he left behind a legacy that continues to inspire and touch the hearts of those who knew him, and even impact those who only heard of him after his death. Being the oldest of six brothers, Ayman held a deep responsibility in being a role model and embodying the values instilled in him by his parents. He was a father figure to my brothers and me, teaching us some lasting lessons through his conduct. I remember when Ayman got his first job as a carpenter’s aid at thirteen.. He found $50 dollars on the floor and was worried because his boss had already left work for the day. Ayman could not let this pass by; he went to his boss’s house that same night to return the money. It was only afterwards that my family came to know through his boss that he was testing Ayman’s honesty, and he passed with flying colors. Beyond honesty, Ayman was also very helpful, generous with more than just his wealth. His kindness was witnessed by many; he was the first to give when it came to help the people of Gaza. Indeed, after his death, a family in Palestine shared with us that Ayman used to help them so much in private that they named their son in honor of him. Ayman would also help people whom he never knew. After his death, our family was comforted by stories of elderly people who told us that Ayman would pull over and help them carry their bags or that he would frequently give a ride to anyone who needed help. These small acts of kindness left a major impact on these individuals and on us when we learned of them. Ayman was also intensely devoted to his family and community. When family needed him, he would drop everything he was doing to help. As a father, he loved his three children -- Jannah, Dana, and Muneer. He worked two jobs to see that they live a comfortable life. Although he wasn’t able to pursue an education, he aspired for his kids to receive a quality education and did everything within his ability to make this happen. He also wanted his children to keep their cultural and religious identity, enrolling his kids in several of PACC’s programs and frequently bringing his kids to community events where he would be seen taking the initiative and volunteering to make these events successful. He wished for his children to grow up loving and living their Palestinian heritage as he did. Ayman was a strong supporter of PACC and he always encouraged his family to support the work it does for the community. Ayman was a loving, giving person who cared deeply about the community. The Ayman Hamdeh Scholarship fund is one of the ways the community hopes to carry on his legacy. We hope the recipient of this award will be inspired to live up to the ideals Ayman embodied.
