Commencement Ceremony Class of 2021 Sunday, May 16, 2021

Dean’s Commencement Message Congratulations to the Class of 2021 on your graduation! You have satisfactorily completed a course of rigorous training and solid preparation for those who wish to become lawyers. Your Haub Law education has enabled you to think like a lawyer, to do the work of a lawyer, and to understand the role of lawyers in society. We have all come together to celebrate you. Your Haub Law degree will serve you well as lawyers, leaders, and achievers in whatever endeavors you undertake. Especially after the year we’ve had, I’m proud to know you, to have taught some of you, and to be your Dean. It has been a year since George Floyd’s murder in May 2020, with the guilty verdict coming just last month, and we have asked hard questions and had open and frank discussions concerning policing, systemic discrimination, structural racism, implicit bias, and the race relations in this country. We asked ourselves how we as lawyers can use the law as a tool to pursue social change. While there is much more to come, the law school has developed and reaffirmed a social justice agenda, which includes expanding our social justice curriculum, taking a leading role in New York’s Law School Anti-Racist Consortium, and working to grow the pipeline of diverse law students and law faculty. Haub Law remains committed to the pursuit of racial and social justice in the United States and in the world. This commitment is in our DNA as a law school, and we will continue our work beyond the present moment. It has been over a year since we shifted to remote and then hybrid instruction in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. As pervasive as it has been, affecting the latter half of your legal education, the pandemic will not be the final word for the Class of 2021. This class will be defined in large part by its vigorous and determined response to one of the worst calamities in a generation. In the past few months, this year’s graduating Haub Law students and students in other classes have demonstrated tremendous resilience by taking in stride disruption and redirection of campus instruction and operations. You have already demonstrated that you can overcome adversity and keep your focus on the goal ahead. We come together today to celebrate your achievements and your promise. This group of students has been doing, and will continue to do, many good and impressive things. Today, in total, we are recognizing 212 Juris Doctor degrees, and 22 Master of Laws degrees: 6 in Comparative Legal Studies, 12 in Environmental Law, and 4 Doctor of Juridical Science in Environmental Law degrees. Of the J.D. graduates, 10 graduated summa cum laude, 29 magna cum laude, and 64 cum laude, for a total of 48.6% receiving honors. Two students earned certificates in Health Law, 33 in Environmental Law, and 14 in International Law. Those impressive raw numbers represent amazing hard work, earnestness and promise across this graduating class. In spite of our limitations on campus, we had a number of (virtual) highlights this past year. We launched the first annual Elisabeth Haub School of Law Environmental Law & Policy Hack Competition. We virtually conferred the 2019-2020 Elisabeth Haub Award for Environmental Law and Diplomacy in memoriam on environmental defenders who have lost their lives defending their land and the environment from destructive industries. Professor Bennett Gershman was recognized by Pace University as a Distinguished Professor, which is the highest honor the University bestows upon faculty. Our Alumni Board and Board of Visitors supported our students financially, professionally, and emotionally. Our community demonstrated both dynamism and compassion in 2020-21.

I am also pleased to report that U.S. News and World Report recently ranked our environmental law program #1. This ranking is the latest major success for the program, which has consistently been rated among the very best in the country. In the past few years the environmental law program has recruited top faculty who are recognized scholars in climate change law, international human rights law and natural resources and food systems law. And in the fall we will be bringing on board two stellar new faculty members, one in environmental law. Additionally, U.S. News and World Report ranked our trial advocacy program #24. This is a huge accomplishment, and I wanted to thank our Advocacy Program leader Professor Louis Fasulo and his hard-working team for this truly deserved recognition, along with our talented and committed students in the program. I also want to acknowledge that with the pandemic came tremendous loss, which spared no community, the law school included. Haub Law mourned and continues to mourn members of its community lost to the coronavirus. We acknowledge these losses and pay tribute to their lives and memory. With 2021 has come a sense of hope and optimism for the future, with the success of several vaccines. We will continue to remain vigilant against the virus, and I very much look forward to the time — hopefully soon — when we can all be together again safely and in a more traditional way. In the meantime, congratulations on achieving this important milestone and extraordinary accomplishment, and best of luck in your continued success in your career and in life. Stay in touch. Sincerely,

Horace Anderson, Dean Elisabeth Haub School of Law Pace University

the honorable Philip M. Halpern ’80 U.S. District Judge, Southern District of New York

Hon. Philip M. Halpern, U.S. District Judge for the Southern District of New York in White Plains, is an alumnus of the Elisabeth Haub School of Law at Pace University and a dedicated public servant with a long and accomplished career in law and on the bench. Judge Halpern was nominated to a seat on the Southern District bench on November 13, 2018, by President Donald Trump, confirmed by the U.S. Senate on February 12, 2020, by a 77-19 vote, and appointed as a District Judge on February 21, 2020. Prior to his nomination, Judge Halpern was the Managing Partner at Collier Halpern & Newberg, LLP, in White Plains. With more than 100 reported decisions and almost four decades of experience in representing individuals, corporations, and Fortune 500 companies, Judge Halpern has extensive trial and appellate experience and a strong commitment to client advocacy. While a partner at Collier Halpern & Newberg, LLP, his practice focused on commercial litigation, estates, employment litigation, real estate litigation, and securities litigation. He was certified by the National Board of Trial Advocacy as a civil trial advocate and a civil pretrial advocate, and was selected as a Super Lawyer every year between 2007 and 2020. Judge Halpern was admitted to practice law in the states of New York and Connecticut and appeared regularly in the federal and state courts in those jurisdictions as well as a variety of other courts nation-wide. He has taken cases to successful verdict in more than a dozen states. In addition, Judge Halpern was an Adjunct Professor at Haub Law, where he taught a class titled “The Anatomy of a Trial: The Burden of Proof,” which dealt exclusively with trial skills. He authored a book in 2020, The Burden of Proof (Preparing a Case from Intake through Verdict and On Appeal), which is an instructive and useful tool for the legal practitioner. He has also been a long-time member of Haub Law’s Board of Visitors. Judge Halpern’s numerous accomplishments have been recognized with awards from the Westchester County Business Journal, American Diabetes Association, and Legal Services of the Hudson Valley. In 2006, he was presented with the Distinguished Service Award at the Elisabeth Haub School of Law’s annual Law Leadership Dinner. He obtained a B.S., magna cum laude, in economics from Fordham University in 1977. He earned his J.D. from Haub Law in 1980, and, upon graduation from law school, he clerked for U.S. District Judge Irving Ben Cooper of the Southern District of New York. Judge Halpern has been an inspiration to Haub Law students and has made a real and lasting impact in every role in which he has served. For his many professional accomplishments, his dedication to the law and commitment to public service, his inspiring example to others both within and outside the legal profession, Pace University is honored to confer upon Judge Philip M. Halpern the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, with all the rights and privileges pertaining thereto.
