VIRTUAL CELEBRATION Thursday, March 25, 2021
Horace E. Anderson Jr. Dean Professor of Law
March 25, 2021 Dear Friends of the Elisabeth Haub School of Law, Thank you for joining us today to celebrate a landmark in the history of the Elisabeth Haub School of Law at Pace University: the 26th annual, and first ever virtual, Law Leadership Celebration. We are delighted that for more than a quarter century, this event has brought together the leaders in the New York legal community to support the Law School, while at the same time recognizing those who have made extraordinary contributions to the legal profession and the Haub Law community. Last year, this celebration was one of the last events before our world changed dramatically. Over the last twelve months, I am proud to say that the Law School has pivoted, first to fully online learning, and then to a seamless hybrid model of legal education, while supporting all members of our community. We are proud of the students, faculty and members of the alumni and legal community who have come together to make this possible. That spirit of flexibility, support and innovation exemplifies the best of Haub Law. Today, we are delighted to honor as our Distinguished Service Award Winner Virginia Wong, a partner with Nixon Peabody, and a member of Haub Law’s Class of ’93. Sadly, we also want to recognize our Memorial Honorees, Trustee Emeritus Henry G. Miller and Hon. Steven I. Milligram, Haub Law Class of ’81 – both of whom were taken from us last April by COVID-19.These distinguished individuals have made a name as leaders in their respective fields of law, and have had a tremendous impact on the Haub Law community. Virginia Wong is head of Nixon Peabody’s Infrastructure Finance team and a member of the firm’s Project Finance and Public Finance practice group. She represents both issuers and underwriters in a full range of transactions including public offerings and private placements and, in particular, project bond transactions, securitizations, and tax-exempt revenue bond financings. She represents cultural facilities and not-for-profit corporations in their exempt offerings, including Pace University, The Rockefeller Foundation, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, The Whitney Museum of American Art, The Juilliard School, Carnegie Hall, Alvin Ailey Dance Foundation, The Metropolitan Opera, and The New York Botanical Garden. Virginia has been especially active in on-campus recruiting and has advocated the hiring Haub Law students at her firm. Henry Miller, a long-time Pace University Trustee and senior partner with Clark, Gagliardi & Miller, P.C., died in April 2020 from the coronavirus at the age of 89. Henry
was nationally renowned as one of New York’s most distinguished trial attorneys litigating all types of cases, including personal injury, commercial and mass tort cases. He was Past President of both the Westchester County Bar Association and the New York State Bar Association. He had very close ties to Pace University: In the early 1970s he worked with Pace University President Edward Mortola and others in starting the Law School, and was an adviser to every subsequent Law School dean. Henry’s firm was the first to establish a Law School student internship program. More than 300 Pace alums have been Henry Miller Interns. Henry also assisted in creating and supporting the successful annual Law Leadership Awards Dinner, which has generated millions of dollars for student scholarships. In 1997, Henry was given the Pace University School of Law Distinguished Service Award. Judge Steven Milligram, a Justice of the New York Supreme Court in Orange County died in April 2020 from the coronavirus at the age of 66. Justice Milligram was well known throughout the New York Legal community. Before his election to the bench in November 2019, Justice Milligram was a partner of the Newburgh law firm Catania, Mahon, Milligram & Rider, PLLC, and served eight years as Monroe Town Justice. He was a Past President of the Orange County Bar Association, and past coach for the NYSBA Mock Trial Program, as well as a member of the NYS Conference of Bar Leaders. He was also recognized for his long-standing civic contributions to the community. One of the early graduates of the Law School, Justice Milligram served as a volunteer in the Career Services office, and hired numerous Haub Law students and alumni. On this, our 26th Annual Law Leadership Celebration, I would like to thank our honorees, as well as the many members of the westchester legal and business community who have come together to support the Law School and our students. Your support today, and indeed throughout the year, is crucial to our ongoing success as we continue our mission of providing students with the high-quality education and personal attention they need to hit the ground running as outstanding attorneys in Westchester, New York City and across the country. On behalf of my colleagues and our students, please accept our thanks and congratulations. Sincerely,
Horace E. Anderson Jr. Dean and Professor of Law

About the Elisabeth Haub School of Law at Pace University Haub Law first opened its doors on its White Plains campus in September 1976. In 2016, the Law School cemented its long-standing partnership with the Haub family, who believe strongly in our mission. This partnership brings an infusion of resources that has taken our environmental law program, and the entire Law School, to new heights. In recognition of the gift and our partnership with their family, we have added their name to ours – the Elisabeth Haub School of Law at Pace University. For more than 40 years, Haub Law has provided an excellent legal education to students who have a passion for the law. Since our founding, we have known that a great legal education must teach more than statutes, regulations and case law. Students must also gain concrete practice skills and begin to learn the strategies and tactics of representation. As legal practice becomes ever more specialized, ever more complex and ever more competitive, our distinctive approach is more important than ever. We continue to build on our historic strength of training practice ready lawyers by expanding our nationally recognized clinics and field placement programs and by supplementing our extraordinary faculty with world-class practicing attorneys. The result is a “Path to Practice” curriculum that prepares our graduates to deliver value to firms and to clients. We are proud that the strength of our curriculum is enhanced by our diverse community. This year’s entering class includes 251 students, including 37 students in our new Flex JD Program, including 73 students who are fully remote due to the pandemic. These students come from 23 states and 126 colleges and universities, approximately 61% are women and 28% are students of color. Many of these students have extensive work experience and one or more graduate degrees. Each student brings unique perspectives and ideas to our classrooms and programs. Haub Law’s unique "Path to Practice" curriculum, our superb location in the heart of the nation's most dynamic legal marketplace, our commitment to providing the best possible education at an exceptional value to students, and our nationally recognized centers of excellence set Haub Law apart. As we look toward the future, we anticipate even greater success in the years ahead.
