Pace Law School path to practice

Pace Law is fully invested in preparing students for success in the changing legal profession. We were one of the first law schools to emphasize the practical skills that employers seek. We continue to innovate, most recently by creating a “capstone” program for students to spend their final semester in supervised practice. Students learn in a collaborative culture right in the heart of the nation’s most dynamic marketplace. Owing to the range and quality of jobs which our graduates secure, and our generous scholarships and grants, a Pace Law education delivers exceptional value.

very important issue in society and the economy is growing in complexity, and solutions almost always have a legal component.

New legal fields are emerging, such as financial compliance, data security, and privacy, and while some established fields are contracting, others are growing. Demand for public interest lawyers is intense. This is an excellent time to consider an education and future in the law, and it’s an exciting

and transformative time here at Pace Law. Pace Law students follow a distinctive path to practice which flows directly from the modern legal and commercial marketplace. Our 1L curriculum is built on a solid and rigorous foundation of traditional legal concepts and the rules of litigation procedure. Afterwards, students quickly transition to a skills-building focus, leading to representing actual clients in our clinics and supervised field placements. Our unique location outside New York City offers valuable access to internship and employment opportunities, and

Advocacy and Moot Court

Our trial advocacy and moot court programs, which transform students into highly effective advocates, have earned a significant national reputation. Led by outstanding professors who are also successful practitioners, these programs synthesize classroom learning, real world observation, simulated courtroom classes and a strong foundation in legal skills and substantive law. In moot court and simulated trials, students argue cases, provide legal representation to clients in a wide range of practical skills courses, receive professional feedback on their performance by peers, faculty, practicing attorneys, and judges, and gain exposure to areas of law in which they are considering careers.

Market-Aligned Learning

Path to Practice clinics, externships, internships

Learning through real-world experience has been a critical part of our DNA from day one. As one of the first law schools to emphasize practical legal skills as a complement to theory, we offer a broad portfolio of clinics with a deep history of public service and commitment to social justice — students learn while advocating for clients and groups in need. Under the supervision of professors and under a student practice order, students transition from textbook to practice by acting as attorneys — they interview and counsel clients, mediate and arbitrate disputes, and appear in court and before administrative agencies. ProBono Scholars devote their entire final semester providing legal services in our clinics and other legal service offices after taking the February bar exam.

Faculty

Nurturing Leaders scholars, practitioners, mentors

Pace Law’s faculty is comprised of exceptional scholars and practitioners in varied fields of practice. Some have written policy as legislators. Many have been associates and partners at firms, worked in business, and served in government, public interest organizations, and the judiciary. A number are community leaders and advocates for social justice. Others have led entrepreneurial and start-up ventures. The breadth and depth of our faculty enables us to offer hundreds of courses and seminars ranging from foundational issues in jurisprudence to cutting-edge questions that arise in the most sophisticated legal practices. Above all, they are mentors who cultivate a student-centered environment. For students exploring what type of law to practice, our faculty steer them in the direction best fitting their interests and ambitions. Outside of the law, a few study and play music, and enjoy discussing it with students. Others talk sports, growing up in the Midwest or overseas, and raising children. Working relationships with Pace Law faculty truly can be life-altering experiences which define and launch successful and rewarding careers.

Our students also have easy access to job and externship opportunities in Albany, Hartford, Boston, and Washington, D.C. Our campus is a vibrant intellectual center for practicing lawyers, policymakers, judges, local and state government officials, and community groups. Environmental lawyers appreciate being near the sprawling Hudson River Valley. International and environmental law students leverage close access to the United Nations, where students pursue unique environmental diplomacy externships. In Westchester County, Fortune 500 companies operate alongside start-ups and a booming biotech corridor. As the only law school between New York City and Albany, Pace Law enjoys a unique relationship with the law firms, judiciary, and corporations in this thriving regional economy. Being in the heart of the nation’s most dynamic legal marketplace is a powerful advantage for our students — and it’s a terrific place to live and explore.

CAREER & PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

The Center for Career and Professional Development is a critical and growing part of Pace Law. We help students understand the marketplace, position themselves to employers and launch their careers. We counsel alumni at every stage of their varied careers. Contrasted with similar offices at peer law schools, we are externally focused and more actively network and advocate directly on-site at law firms, businesses, and public agencies.

alumni

Success Defined citizens, leaders, innovators

Pace Law alumni are succeeding in a range of rewarding private and public sector jobs. They’re an invaluable resource for students — our 8,300+ alumni are committed to networking with, mentoring and advocating for their younger peers who are more recent graduates or still enrolled at the School. Faculty and career development professionals — all experienced attorneys —  help students and alumni think beyond traditional practice areas to pursue legal careers in emerging and growing areas. New York State is one of the largest incubators in the country for entrepreneurial and start-up businesses. We show students and alumni how these growing companies need lawyers, we help them make connections, and we advocate aggressively on their behalf. We’re proud to introduce here just a handful of outstanding Pace lawyers who are serving society and the economy.

“Before law school, I was a commercial fisherman and had studied marine biology and geology in college. Wanting to apply those experiences to law and policy, I chose Pace because of its diverse environmental law curriculum — including air quality, land use, diplomacy, and international matters. Now I’m a clean water advocate at Riverkeeper, and we’re the chief client of Pace’s Environmental Litigation Clinic.

“ I encourage new students to take advantage of the multiple learning opportunities outside the classroom. I was particularly involved in moot court competitions and the Pace Environmental Law Society, and attended global conservation and preservation meetings as a delegate and observer. My varied work experience today reflects the comprehensive curriculum I was exposed to at Pace Law.”

“I work in derivatives at a big, global firm, representing financial institutions, hedge funds, energy and commodity companies, and trade associations in a variety of transactional, regulatory, and enforcement matters. In my course and clinical work, professors took the time to learn about my interests, helped me assess my strengths, and absolutely, pointed out where I needed to improve and grow. As a result of this mentoring, I moved from an environmental concentration to finance.

“I spend a fair amount of time in court and one of the biggest requirements is the ability to think quickly on my feet. From day one, I felt confident and prepared in court because of the practical experience I had at Pace Law. One of the most useful skills I learned through trial advocacy courses — in which all of the instructors were practicing attorneys — was the ability to react and respond in court with confidence. I also participated in the Prosecution Externship at the Westchester District Attorney’s Office, which is not far from campus. I gained a tremendous amount of exposure to the criminal justice system. I was also very involved in the Public Interest Law Scholarship Organization (PILSO), which enabled me to take an unpaid internship with a judge during my first summer.

“ My advice to prospective students is to avoid following a pre-conceived notion of what the law is. If you come to Pace Law with an open mind and are willing to try on different experiences — or if you do have some firm goals in mind — the faculty will do everything they can to help you tackle any subject and prepare you for the career that best matches your interests and ambitions.”

“When I was a college senior in Arizona, I considered several top law schools, mostly on or near the West Coast, but I found Pace Law to be the best fit. At Pace, Professor Steven Goldberg encouraged me to enroll in the Federal Judicial Honors Externship, which was an important experience in itself, and it also led to a clerkship with Judge Charles L. Brieant, Jr. in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. Currently I’m principal and co-chair of a litigation group at a large practice.

“ I work in a rapidly growing legal field, compliance —  specifically, food law and product compliance — in my role as an associate general counsel for a global company. I’m very involved in areas including marketing, intellectual property, regulatory and commercial transactions. Pace Law prepared me for these roles through a solid, diversified curriculum and practical advice from experienced faculty, including adjunct professors who were (and are) active practitioners in many fields of law. The School also encouraged and helped us to pursue externships and internships, which were somewhat unusual and pioneering at the time, and which proved to be invaluable for me in assessing the practical application of the law, as well as evaluating my personal interests and future career goals.

“In addition to seeking out faculty mentorships, my advice to prospective and current students is to be active. In addition to the judicial externship, I participated in the Washington, D.C. externship with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, as well as in the Environmental Litigation Clinic on campus. I traveled to Brazil with my Comparative Environmental Law class, and I was CoManaging Editor of the Pace Environmental Law Review. And after you graduate, there will be many ways to stay involved with alumni and the School. Doing so, I find I ‘get’ as much I give.”

“ Pace Law is expanding its curriculum in compliance, and I’d encourage prospective students to explore if this growing field is something you might find rewarding and interesting, either as your primary concentration or as part of your course work.”
