Externships Credit-bearing externships offer students skills-building opportunities off campus and directly in the workplace. I encourage new students to take advantage of the multiple learning opportunities outside the classroom. I was particularly involved in moot court competitions and the Pace Environmental Law Society, and attended global conservation and preservation meetings as a delegate and observer. “I work in derivatives at a big, global firm, representing financial institutions, hedge funds, energy and commodity companies, and trade associations in a variety of transactional, regulatory, and enforcement matters. In my course and clinical work, professors took the time to learn about my interests, helped me assess my strengths, and absolutely, pointed out where I needed to improve and grow. As a result of this mentoring, I moved from an environmental concentration to finance.
“I spend a fair amount of time in court and one of the biggest requirements is the ability to think quickly on my feet. From day one, I felt confident and prepared in court because of the practical experience I had at Pace. One of the most useful skills I learned through trial advocacy courses — in which all of the instructors were practicing attorneys — was the ability to react and respond in court with confidence. I also participated in the Prosecution Externship at the Westchester District Attorney’s Office, which is not far from campus. I gained a tremendous amount of exposure to the criminal justice system. I was also very involved in the Public Interest Law Scholarship Organization (PILSO), which enabled me to take an unpaid internship with a judge during my first summer.
“ My advice to prospective students is to avoid following a pre-conceived notion of what the law is. If you come to Pace with an open mind and are willing to try on d ifferent experiences — or if you do have some firm goals in mind — the faculty will do everything they can to help you tackle any subject and prepare you for the career that best matches your interests and ambitions.”

“When I was a college senior in Arizona, I considered several top law schools, mostly on or near the West Coast, but I found Pace to be the best fit. At Pace, Professor Steven Goldberg encouraged me to enroll in the Federal Judicial Honors Externship, which was an important experience in itself, and it also led to a clerkship with Judge Charles L. Brieant, Jr. in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. Currently I’m principal and co-chair of a litigation group at a large practice.
“ I work in a rapidly growing legal field, compliance — specifically product compliance — in my role as vice president for a global company. I’m very involved in areas including marketing, intellectual property, regulatory and commercial transactions. Pace prepared me for these roles through a solid, diversified curriculum and practical advice from experienced faculty, including adjunct professors who were (and are) active practitioners in many fields of law. The School also encouraged and helped us to pursue externships and internships, which were somewhat unusual and pioneering at the time, and which proved to be invaluable for me in assessing the practical application of the law, as well as evaluating my personal interests and future career goals.
“In addition to seeking out faculty mentorships, my advice to prospective and current students is to be active. In addition to the judicial externship, I participated in the Washington, D.C. externship with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, as well as in the Environmental Litigation Clinic on campus. I traveled to Brazil with my Comparative Environmental Law class, and I was CoManaging Editor of the Pace Environmental Law Review. And after you graduate, there will be many ways to stay involved with alumni and the School. Doing so, I find I ‘get’ as much I give.”
