Starstreet’s past is as diverse as its present. Having existed in some form or another since the mid-19th century, the precinct’s Sun, Moon and Star Streets are said to be named after a verse from the 13th-century Chinese text, ‘The Three-Character Classic’, which reads, ‘The three forces are heaven, man and earth; the three luminaries are the sun, the moon and the stars.’ In the late 1800s, the Hong Kong Electric Company established the city’s first electric power station in the district, making Hong Kong one of the first two cities in Asia to have a public supply of electricity. How’s that for staying ahead of the crowd?
Did you know that the 50-metre-long Electric Street was the first street in Hong Kong to be lit by electric street lamps, beginning in December 1890? Workers’ dormitories were some of the first buildings in the precinct, built for the employees of the power station which continued to operate until it was decommissioned in 1922.
The precinct also includes Wing Fung Street and St. Francis Yard, which are the birthplace of one of Hong Kong’s first Catholic communities. Formed by a Catholic mission in the 1840s, this area is still home to the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church as well as the prestigious St. Francis’ Canossian School, which was once a hospital and sanctuary for orphans, the blind and the poor.
Starstreet continued to serve those in need during the Japanese invasion of Hong Kong in World War Two with a network of public air raid shelters tunneled into the solid rock hillside above the precinct. The tunnel entrances have long been sealed shut by mysterious black doors, one of which is guarded by a cardinal red Taoist shrine.
For much of the 20th century, Starstreet remained a gritty working-class warren of frozen food wholesalers, auto shops and commercial printers. Things changed in 2004 with the opening of the Three Pacific Place office tower, and again in 2009, when Swire Properties partnered with the Hong Kong government to revitalise the streetscape and amenities of the neighbourhood. Over the next few years, the street signs and lamps, pavements, foliage and the local playground were all spruced up, and even the refuse collection point got a modern-art facelift (see page 18). The revitalisation process brought a f lurry of attention to the area and firmly marked Starstreet as one of Hong Kong’s most vibrant cultural quarters.

「星街」小區的歷史可追溯至 19 世紀中葉， 一百多年來面貌或許有變，但多元的特質始終 如一。 「星街」主要由日、月、星三條小街組成， 據說名字來自 13 世紀的中國經典《三字經》裡的 「三才者，天地人，三光者，日月星」 。 19 世紀末， 香港電燈公司在這裡興建全港首座發電廠， 使香港成為亞洲兩座最早有公用電力供應 的城市之一。星街從那時起已走在時代前沿了！
電氣街
1890 年 12 月， 50 米長的
電氣街成為全港第一條設有 電燈照明的街道。 而小區裡 最早出現的建築是為發電廠 工人而設的宿舍，直到 1922 年 才光榮「退役」 。
進教圍
星街小區還包括永豐街和 進教圍兩條小街。這裡是香港 首批天主教社區其中一個 發源地，由一支天主教傳教團 於 1840 年代設立，目前仍設有 聖母聖衣堂及嘉諾撒聖方濟各 學校，該校前身是醫院及孤兒、 盲人和貧困人士的收容所。
二戰時期
二次大戰香港被日軍佔領期間， 星街小區成為市民的避難所， 這裡有隧道通往設於小區後 山裡的防空洞。通往防空洞 的隧道出入口已被神秘的 黑色門封起來，其中一道門前更 設置了一座鮮紅色的道觀。
成長與重生
來到 20 世紀， 「星街」依然是一個平民化的社區， 街頭巷尾都是冷凍食品批發商、車房和印刷廠等。 隨著太古廣場三座在 2004 年正式啟用，及後太古 地產與香港政府在 2009 年攜手活化區內街道景觀 及社區設施， 「星街」的面貌開始改變。隨後數年， 路牌、街燈、行人路、公園的園林景致及遊樂場等 紛紛換上新裝，甚至區內垃圾收集站的設計亦 融入現代藝術元素（請參閱第 18 頁） 。一連串的 活化工作令「星街」開始廣受注意，並成為香港 最具活力和文化特色的社區之一。

不過它既不是藝廊，也不是設計精品店， 只要看看靠牆而立的大型垃圾箱，就會知道， 這裡是垃圾收集站。星街小區設有各種 充滿創意的廢物回收和減少廢物的方法， 藉此推動可持續發展文化，這座垃圾收集站 正好作為這個小社區的環保象徵。
計劃的其中一部分是設立一個塑膠回 收站，遊客拿塑膠來回收即可獲得星星作 獎勵，然後這些星星可兌換由區內商店 和餐廳提供的各種購物優惠和禮品。 此外，我們也非常關注衣物回收，並在 小區內豎立由美國藝術家 Derick Melander 以 700 磅二手衣物創作的藝術裝置—— 二手衣物整齊地堆疊成顏色像彩虹一樣的 兩米高柱體，藉此提醒大家日常浪費的 衣物數量。不管是回收站還是藝術裝置， 星街小區均期望透過大家的參與，提高 大家對可持續發展問題的關注。
Yet it houses neither an art gallery nor a design boutique but – as a closer inspection of the dumpsters huddled to its walls will reveal – a garbage depot. An unlikely metaphor, perhaps, for the creative ways in which the Starstreet Precinct is tackling the issues of recycling and waste reduction, and cultivating an inclusive culture of sustainability in the process.
As part of this initiative, a plastic recycling station was set up where visitors could sort their waste for the chance to earn stars, which could then be redeemed for a variety of shopping rewards and gifts at neighbouring stores and restaurants.

Standing in the geographical centre of Starstreet Precinct is a curious, perfectly cuboid building covered in a grid-like pattern inspired by Dutch painter Piet Mondrian. 位於星街小區的正中央是一座外牆繪

Hong Kong has some catching up to do when it comes to recycling: while one-fifth of our daily garbage is plastic waste, only 14 percent of it is recycled, according to government statistics. Responsible for the far-sighted revitalisation of Starstreet, Swire Properties launched its “Plastic-Free Precinct” campaign in October 2019 in a concerted effort to minimise single-use plastics in the city.
In another instance, clothes recycling was placed front and center when American artist Derick Melander created an art installation comprised of over 700 pounds of second-hand clothes donated by the local communities. The garments were meticulously stacked into a two-metre-tall column that cycled through the colours of the rainbow, with the aim of raising awareness of the alarming amount of textile waste we go through. Both are demonstrations of how Starstreet is making an effort to highlight issues of sustainability through engaging ways.

‘Fill Green’ at Edgar
Alongside the Precinct’s wider efforts, many Starstreet tenants passionately drive their own sustainability initiatives: MANA!, a local pioneer in environmentally conscious food, made waves for petitioning the government to properly process conventional plastic waste and transition to environmentally-friendly alternatives. The zero-waste restaurant also runs a pilot programme that converts food scraps, leftovers and compostable packaging into soil on a daily basis. “We’ve aimed to be a zero-waste brand from the start,” says founder Bobsy Gaia. “Although we had challenges and didn’t always get it right due to what was available, we never compromised.” Another local leader is Gianni Caprioli, whose Giando Italian Restaurant & Bar has long been committed to best practices in sustainability, earning it the top honour in WWF’s One Planet Restaurant Awards 2019. Apart from supporting artisanal, family-run Italian producers of every thing from wine and burrata to eggs and cured meats, Gianni also draws from his time spent cooking in Japan to tap into the country’s stocks of sustainable seafood – think responsibly farmed bluefin tuna and Okinawan uni – that deliver the quality that the world of fine dining demands

while preserving fish populations for the future. For those who have been inspired to bring this lifestyle home, Moon Street’s zero-waste grocery store, Edgar, is your first port of call. Aside from offering organic, unpackaged foodstuffs, the boutique also provides the basics to build a sustainable kitchen and pantry, including essentials such as beeswax food wraps, a cornucopia of water bottles and cutlery, and more reusable straws than you could ever hope for. “The first day we opened Edgar’s Wan Chai store, people were already walking in and pulling containers out of their bags,” says owner Raphaël De Ry of the mindset that pervades the Starstreet Precinct community.
“Essentially, it’s about finding a way for our consumption to become more considered.” We couldn’t agree more.

Carefully separate the flat street scene from the back cover (it’s already cut out for you). 2. Gently push the pop-out buildings forward, so that they stand clear of the background. They should remain attached to the card! 3. Now fold the card forward so that your buildings pop out, as per the simplified diagram below. Ensure all the dotted score-lines are crisply folded at right angles. 4. With Starstreet standing tall, it’s time to pop out your people! 5.
