Hold Back the Self Truth/Self Sabatoge by: Tori Farris When the words come to the tip of my tongue They taste bitter like the cigarettes that blacken my lungs Two puffs of smoke to evade the truth My thoughts are a cancer when combined with proof So open my mouth and unbind my breast Shake the weight from my shoulders, head, and chest. Slice from my stomach to my burning throat; My own entrails strangling me until I choke. Mind against body but my mind is blank My body takes over and my bones start to break Vertebrae bending until paralyzation Everything twisted to a new realization. Fall to the ground with a broken mirror Trying to cry out is anyone here? Pieces of glass reflect back a stranger Unknown eyes now realize I am the danger

The Seed of Writing by Ethan Huntington A single idea. A single seed. Buried deep within the depths Of the soil, Struggling to fracture, Then burst through its outer shell. Your pencil hits the paper, As a seedling emerges, Burgeoning from the earth, Like a space shuttle taking to the skies. The roots and trunk soon take shape, Your hand now wandering on its own, Flying, soaring, and gliding Across the pages. Exultantly, you conclude The closing paragraph As a sense of relief and jubilation Flush through your body, A sloppy grin, Plastered onto your face. A single seed, a grandiose tree. A single idea, a prodigious story.

Potential Energy by Tori Farris It keeps my heart beating to pump blood through my veins It makes images in my head and puts them into frames Bursting at the seams, like my heart is for you So much potential energy I don’t know what to do. Do I take the action I so desperately need? Or patiently wait until you come, fully freed? Rid yourself of your demons, burn some sage to cleanse Let those bad spirits free you from a corrupted lens. All my potential energy is pushing me towards you It is inevitable that I will continue to pursue What I believe will and can become something great If you only left those sorrowful ghosts in the rain.

Dronvaardia by: Henry Goodson
Jason flipped, catching the puck in one smooth motion. The heavy wooden puck, about the
circumference of a grapefruit, was etched with beautiful vinelike designs. This one, as the puck for the national Wellflight championships, was impeccably crafted. The game was West United, Jason’s team, versus the ever-intimidating Legion. Jason couldn’t worry about that now, though; he had two enemy strikers flying up to meet him.
Wellflight, the national sport of Dronvaardia, was played in the air, as the competitors possessed
batlike wings. It was a rare gift, but it was celebrated and honored across the land. Held in a different stadium each game, one thing remained constant; each team had to protect a well, which the other
team would try to sink the puck into to score. After a team scored, the puck would shoot out of the
“cannon”, a similarly shaped hole in the middle of the field. Today, the Wellflight game was staged on the side of a cliff, and the field was rotated a full 90 degrees from the usual. There was an enormous
stadium with tens of thousands of spectators, and green plains stretched out in all directions past that. Jason had just caught the puck straight from the cannon, and he had sights on the enemy
well. Thirty seconds were left on the clock, and the game was tied 8-8. He would need to dodge the two strikers coming at him from underneath, and then get past their wellkeeper to score. His two
teammates were lagging behind, and the strikers were going to reach him any moment. Jason turned 180 degrees, throwing the puck at his West United Teammate Georgio, 40 feet above him.
Wham! Jason impacted one of the confused strikers, and they both started plummeting, trying
to right themselves. Meanwhile, the second striker was racing towards Georgio, and he was gaining. Giorgio was 20 feet away from the well when the striker and the wellkeeper simultaneously reached him. The striker checked him, almost knocking the puck from his hands. The keeper used this as an
opportunity to pluck it away and make a break for the well. 15 seconds and the game would reset and go into overtime, but if the Legion keeper scored before then, the game was lost!
Jason untangled himself from his opponent at last and raced for the keeper. The keeper’s main
job was to guard his own well, so he wasn’t the fastest team member, but he was only 10 feet from the well, rendering Jason’s chase a futile effort. As the Legion keeper whipped the puck sideways towards the well embedded in the dark granite cliff, the countless spectators were counting the last 5 seconds
of the game. The puck flew, wobbling slightly, and as the stadium reached “One!” and Georgio cursed in his thick Italian accent, the puck sunk into the well flawlessly. That was the game; Legion 9, West
United 8. Jason’s heart sank as he saw the championship flying away from him like a puck towards a well. This feeling though, was the opposite.
