WHY YOUR SUPPORT MATTERS
OTHER OPPORTUNITIES FOR SUPPORT
As is the case at virtually all independent schools, tuition and fees do not cover the full annual cost of educating students, nor do they cover the cost of new buildings or major improvements.
Although the Annual Fund is the school’s main fundraising priority, there are additional ways to support Pacific Ridge School.
ANNUAL REVENUE
Tuition & Fees – 90% Operating Gap – 6% Annual Giving – 4%
The gap between revenue and expenses is projected to close by 2023 through the growth of the Annual Fund, endowment and other sources.
By supplementing tuition with generous dollars from families and friends, we are able to continue hiring the best teachers and developing the forwardlooking programs our families have come to expect. Of the many worthwhile nonprofits that exist, Pacific Ridge is one of the very few that directly benefit our children. As such, we ask all parents of currently enrolled students to make the school a philanthropic priority and to contribute every year.
In order to stay at the forefront of education and continue to grow, Pacific Ridge needs the support of all families.
If you would like to support a capital project or endowment fund, make a planned gift or volunteer, please contact the Philanthropy Office at 760.448.9849.
CAPITAL CAMPAIGNS
ENDOWMENT GIVING
Periodically, the school may launch a campaign to pay for a major building project or fund needs that are outside the scope of the Annual Fund. During a campaign, donors are asked to support both the Annual Fund and to make a special gift to the campaign, payable over several years. This ensures that the school’s day-to-day expenses are covered while we make significant improvements that will benefit both current and future students.
Endowment gifts are an important source of funding for independent schools. The principle of these funds remains intact while the school can spend a portion of the interest income each year to support the operating budget or special projects. Building an endowment for Pacific Ridge is an important part of the school’s longrange planning as established by the Board of Trustees.
PLANNED GIVING
VOLUNTEERING
Planned gifts are contributions that are arranged in the present and allocated at a future date. Commonly structured through a will or trust, these enable donors to make larger gifts than they could from ordinary income.
The Philanthropy Office warmly welcomes volunteers to encourage support of the Annual Fund. If you are interested in joining this energetic and friendly group, please contact the Philanthropy Office. The school also welcomes parent involvement with Admissions, through the Parents Association and when other opportunities arise.

ABOUT THE ANNUAL FUND First and foremost, families are asked to support the Annual Fund as generously as they can each year. Participation is a key element of the Annual Fund, and giving by 100% of families is our primary goal. Gifts to the Annual Fund are applied across the school’s operating budget to support the people and programs that make Pacific Ridge outstanding. Because all Annual Fund gifts are spent in the year they are donated, the fund must be renewed each year. And, because of its central role in supporting the school’s core programs, our Board of Trustees has identified the Annual Fund as the school’s top philanthropic priority. Therefore, we ask our currently enrolled families to give to the Annual Fund first, before making other gifts. The Annual Fund runs from July 1 through June 30. Solicitations for the Annual Fund are mailed to families in September at the start of the academic year, with follow-up calls and emails by parent volunteers. All donors to the Annual Fund will be acknowledged in the school’s annual report.
THE ANNUAL FUND SUPPORTS: • A rts • Athletics • Classroom and Lab Supplies • Competitive Faculty Salaries • Global Travel • Professional Development • Sciences • Service Learning
The Annual Fund strengthens every aspect of our school – beyond what is possible with tuition alone.
COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS Who receives requests for donations? E ach year, Pacific Ridge seeks support from all enrolled parents, as well as alumni, alumni parents, grandparents, trustees, faculty and staff. We are gratified that 100% of trustees, faculty and staff have given each year since the school’s founding.
Why doesn’t Pacific Ridge just raise tuition to cover the full cost of educating students? As is the case with virtually all independent schools, increasing tuition to fully fund our current level of education could price us out of the market. This would limit enrollment, which, in turn, could mean a cutback in programs. The Annual Fund helps keep a Pacific Ridge education accessible to the best and brightest applicants, creates a diverse and vibrant learning community and supports the excellent teaching and unique programming for which the school is known. Secondly, gifts to the Annual Fund are tax deductible, while increased tuition is not.
How much should I give to the Annual Fund?
How much of a difference can my gift really make?
How do corporate matching gift programs work?
e ask that families make supporting Pacific Ridge W a priority and give to the best of their abilities on an annual basis. Many families are able to contribute at a leadership level. Above all, we strive for 100% participation. Every gift, no matter the size, is important.
All gifts to the Annual Fund have a positive impact on the education we provide. The operating budget covers everything - small and large - from individual pieces of sports equipment and art supplies to competitive salary packages for our 90+ faculty members.
Many companies supplement employee charitable gifts with generous matches of their own, thereby significantly increasing the amount of the funds donated to the school. Donors are recognized for the total amount of their gifts, including matching funds. Matching funds can take several months to process, so we suggest that donors inquire about them and start the paperwork early to ensure all funds are received by June 30, the end of Pacific Ridge’s fiscal year.

May I designate where my gift will be used? Gifts to the Annual Fund are always unrestricted and applied toward the school’s greatest needs within the operating budget.
How can I make my gift? Pacific Ridge School is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, and gifts are tax-deductible as allowed by law. We gratefully accept donations of cash, check, credit card and appreciated securities. We also encourage donors to take advantage of corporate matching gift programs if their employers offer them.
Does it matter when I make my gift? Yes. Making your gift early in the year significantly helps the school with budget planning. Because of this, we ask donors to make pledges by December 31, if possible. While pledges can be paid any time before June 30, donors often choose to make their gift before December 31 for tax purposes.
What if I feel something should be changed at Pacific Ridge and want to withhold support to the Annual Fund? Pacific Ridge encourages open discussion and strives to be as responsive as possible to all parent concerns. Withholding support from the Annual Fund will not help you resolve your issue. We encourage you to share your concerns with the appropriate school administrator or the Philanthropy office.

OUR MISSION
PHILANTHROPY AT PACIFIC RIDGE The story of Pacific Ridge began with the vision and philanthropic spirit of a small group of San Diego families. They aspired to create an exemplary middle and high school with a unique, living mission statement. This community of founding families pooled their ideas and financial support to purchase land, hire excellent teachers and launch an amazing new school. Since then, many more families have continued the Pacific Ridge tradition of sharing their time and resources to help the school’s campus and programming to grow. Now providing an exceptional education to 600 students each year and enjoying an almost-complete campus, Pacific Ridge would not be the school it is today without this history of generous support. Each gift, from each donor, has helped Pacific Ridge deliver an extraordinary education to all students. WHAT IT TAKES TO GROW A SCHOOL
