ANNUAL REPORT
PACIFIC RIDGE SCHOOL
2016 - 2017
Dear Pacific Ridge Community, It has been a unique and incredible honor to serve as Chair of the Board of Trustees for Pacific Ridge School in the 2016-2017 school year, quite an exciting time to be a part of this vibrant and growing community. In this edition of View from the Ridge, the impact of your philanthropic support and dedication to furthering the mission of Pacific Ridge is evident on every page. At the top of the Board of Trustees’ responsibilities is the fiduciary health of the institution it serves. In this Annual Report to our community, the first in our school’s history, it is our pleasure to present the financial picture of Pacific Ridge School – as well as provide insights from members of our community about the importance of philanthropy to the success of our school today and into our bright future. It is through the dedicated support of our community that we are able to provide the most elevated student experience possible, from the classrooms and labs to the stage, from the athletic fields and courts to the community through our service learning and global engagement programs. Your gifts and support make the Pacific Ridge experience possible and incredible. Annually, Head of School Dr. Bob Ogle and the administrative staff present a detailed budget for the following year to the Board of Trustees. After several months of discussions and modifications at the committee levels, the Board gathers to approve the annual budget. We as a Board are grateful each year for the hard work of Dr. Ogle, our CFO Bob Buscher, and the administrative staff of the school to ensure a responsible process and a fiscally sound final operating budget. This Annual Report shows the expenditures and revenues of the 2016-2017 school year. I hope you find the pages that follow informative. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, thank you for your support of Pacific Ridge School. Your dedication to our school is proof that the Firebird community is soaring! With best regards,
Steve Netzley, Chair, Board of Trustees

The gif t
of education Laura and Ric Basanese, P’22
We believe education is one of the greatest gifts we can provide to our twins, a gift they will benefit from their whole lives. When we looked at schools, we found that Pacific Ridge had the most meaningful and comprehensive mission, one that has shaped an extraordinary educational environment. We knew this is where we wanted our children to be. As parents, we have a stake in this school’s success and future. Our contributions support the diversity and caliber of its programs, as well as our children’s environment and community – all crucial to their development. Pacific Ridge stands for what we believe in and what we want our children to live out in their lives. We couldn’t be more grateful for what we’ve found here.

Tuition alone does not cover the full cost of providing a world-class, mission-driven educational experience to our students. The Pacific Ridge Annual Fund helps bridge this gap. Every gift to the Annual Fund supports the transformational programs and resources that are at the core of the Pacific Ridge experience. Thank you for your support each and every year.

Supporting
a purposeful life Elle Lichter ‘12
Pacific Ridge’s mission (I still know it by heart!) has guided me throughout college and into the real world. Academic excellence was – of course – a really important pillar through college. Global engagement and ethical responsibility were two themes I explored that I probably wouldn’t have without Pacific Ridge emphasizing them while I was young. When I chose to study abroad in Morocco, it was a scary decision, but one I made because of my Pacific Ridge trips to China, Israel and Palestine. They were eye-opening and insightful experiences I knew I wanted more of. Now, I work in finance. When it came time for job interviews, the things I first learned at Pacific Ridge set me up for success. No, I didn’t have a technical business background; I didn’t know all about derivatives and credit default swaps. But, I was confident, could handle myself in new, completely unknown environments and I was excited to learn. Pacific Ridge has given me more than I ever could have asked for and I still rely on its foundation in my life today. I participated in the Day of Giving campaign and will continue to donate, in hopes that every other student who attends the school will be as inspired as I was to find their own purposeful life.

From its beginning, Pacific Ridge School has been the beneficiary of generous supporters, starting with the founders who created a dynamic mission statement and nurtured an idea into a thriving learning community. To date, through the support of generous donors, Pacific Ridge has raised over $74 million, enabling the school to build a beautiful campus featuring four major buildings and a full turf field. Thank you to the many who took a chance, believed in a vision and generously contributed to building our school and its programs.
Investing in the school that invests in our children Jon and Suzie Nalbandian P ’15, ’20
Pacific Ridge School is more than just a school- it is a community where our children are nurtured, supported, accepted and challenged. Given the opportunity and confidence to try things they might never have tried, Pacific Ridge is a place where our children can feel proud to be an intellectual, an athlete, an artist, or all three. We feel so grateful for all that Pacific Ridge has invested into our boys. Donating our time and money is the best way we feel we can give back. Because of Pacific Ridge, our children are not only acquiring the skills to compete economically in the world, but more importantly, they are learning how to live with purpose, inspired by passion. You can’t put a price on that!
