Sometimes as I sit down to write my editorial, I already have an idea of what I want to say, and then there are times like this that I sit and stare at my computer anticipating something phenomenal to pop into my head. Well, I closed my computer up twice, and yes, I finally can start my babbling. Sometimes you just have to give your brain time to think!

As I am writing this editorial it is pouring rain. Winter is still going strong here in California. The temperature is forty degrees, and this is very unusual for us at this time of year. Usually, we are in spring-like conditions of seventy–five degrees, sunshine, and dry. I am definitely not complaining, because after years of near-drought conditions, our land, and the people and animals that utilize it, definitely needed this infusion of something good. Things look brighter in our industry with the reservoirs full, the snow pack high, and the land saturated with water. When you’re not fighting with Mother Nature, everything else in life looks brighter, because most everything else is stuff we can control (at least we think we can!).

school finishing up the last semester, sports wrapping up (if not in a league), shows are keeping your weekends busy, other events to numerous to mention boggling your agendas, and last-but-not-least (and most important) keeping family life going strong. In this fast pace time, we can lose site of what is important – our kids (our future generation). Time goes fast, as each year passes, and we watch our children grow and move onto their next momentous occasion in their life. All those grueling miles of roads traveled to a show, all those hours of work helping your kids with their projects, and even the extra money spent to achieve these things, can’t diminish all the time spent together and the memories made. When you are exhausted from the miles traveled or attending another event, remember they are only young once. Enjoy the “memory making” times while you can – they go by fast. I am reminded how fast that time goes by when I get the pictures for the “All Around” Kid section and the Graduates section of my magazine. It seems only yesterday, that the parents of these kids were showing in junior shows, or I was reading baby announcements, and then seeing their first pictures in show photos!

entire family can enjoy.” At that time, he envisioned local fairs branching out into other areas such as science to keep pace with changes in agriculture.
kathleen's
Korner
What was so different about his approach was his insistence that fairs pay their own way and he had a plan to do it. His innovative idea was to bring the biggest names in entertainment to Paso Robles. Was he crazy? Paso Robles, at that time was a dusty little cow town, a wide spot in the road, halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco, with summertime temperatures climbing well over 100 degrees during fair time. By his second Fair, he had booked one of the hottest county acts of 1969, Buck Owens, for two shows. It took a lot of wrangling and the entire Fair’s entertainment budget and then some, but those two sell-out shows proved that if you booked the act, people were willing to plunk down cold hard cash to see something good, plus they bought food and beverages, strolled the vendors, dropping cash into the fair’s coffers all the way. In a mere fifteen years, Maynard estimated that 4-5 million dollars had gone back into the fairgrounds for capital improvements, benefiting not only the entertainment aspects but the agriculture, arts and craft and livestock areas as well.
Legend
By Kathleen Wood Vieira
March 19, 2010, the world lost a legend. Maynard Potter passed away in Idaho at the young age of 70. The western state’s county fairs system benefited from this man’s innovative genius for over 25 years. Employing his personal philosophy that fairs are a vital ingredient of society, he transformed the San Luis Obispo County Fair into the Disneyland-esque California Mid-State Fair, making it truly “The Biggest Little Fair Anywhere.”
Sheep were always Maynard’s passion, especially Suffolks. He offered sheep breeders the opportunity to showcase their flocks at the Mid-State Fair. From natural colored and wool breeds to meat producing types, his shows rivaled many big state fairs. The entertainment menu brought visitors from across the state, from the big cities and the small towns; from the coast and the Central Valley. Pretty soon other fairs followed his lead and were booking at least one night of big name entertainment, but the Mid-State Fair kept its lead. In a 1990 interview by local journalist Phil Dirx, Maynard said, “Statistics show that the Mid-State Fair is the largest overall entertainment fair in the country. And if you add in the free entertainment, there is no close second.”
Born and raised in Watsonville, California, Maynard Potter developed an early love of agriculture through his involvement with 4-H and FFA work where he raised cattle, sheep and hay. He attended Hartnell College and graduated from San Jose State with a degree in business administration, one that would serve him well as he shepherded the sleepy little San Luis Obispo County Fair into one of the major entertainment venues of the 20th century. In a San Luis Obisp TelegramTribune article written on his first day on the job (April 1, 1968), Maynard is quoted as saying, “Fairs are one of the last remaining events that the

He wanted the fair experience to be available at every turn. Each year he transformed the grounds into a work of art. His carefully watered and manicured lawns were an oasis in the summer heat. Bright marigolds greeted visitors at the main gate and graced the walkways throughout. Right in the middle of the fairgrounds is a testament to his ability to think outside the box. Legend has it that one day Maynard came to Waldo Carminati, his maintenance supervisor and said, “I think we need something different.” So with merely a tractor and backhoe, they built Maynard’s Mountain, a rock and tree covered waterfall, smack in the middle of the fairgrounds. Fair goers could stroll a concrete trail ran up and over the structure. More than a few fair romances were sealed with a kiss on that winding path.

PINKEYE By HJ Hamlen, DVM, MS, DACVPM
school, and not allowed back until rendered “non-contagious’ by treatment. Many schools require a doctor’s note for the child to return, but even with these precautions pre-schools, daycares, and schools may experience pinkeye “epidemics”. Although the virus will normally be self-limiting, or run its course and resolve, many times secondary bacterial infections occur in the inflamed eye. For this reason, doctors will frequently prescribe antibiotic eye drops or ointment even for viral conjunctivitis (remember antibiotics do not treat viruses – only bacteria). Doctors stress hygiene in cases of human pinkeye:
Introduction: “Pinkeye” is a laymen’s term used to describe inflammation of the delicate, clear lining that covers both the eyeball and the inner eyelids. The lining is called the conjunctiva. The palpebral conjunctiva covers the inside of the eyelid and the ocular or bulbar conjunctiva covers the surface of the eye. Inflammation (redness, pain, heat, and swelling) of the lining is called conjunctivitis.
• Change the pillow case • Do not share eye cosmetics • Do not share towels or tissues • Keep your hands away from the eyes • Wash your hands frequently
Conjunctivitis can be seen in any animal that has eyes! The clinical signs are: • Eye pain • Redness • Swelling • Itching of the eye • Increased tearing • Mucous discharge (white, grey, yellow, or green) • Crusting along the eyelids • Sensitivity to light
Lessons from pinkeye in children can be summarized as “isolate, treat, and improve hygiene”. These are important lessons that can be transferred to other species with pink eye.
If the cornea is inflamed, patches of cloudiness, white spots, or ulcers may develop on the surface of the eye and vision may be impaired. There are many possible causes of conjunctivitis including: foreign bodies (grass awns, pieces of straw, etc) or particles (dust, pollen) trapped in the eyelid, allergies, environmental pollutants that cause eye irritation, and infectious agents such as bacteria and virus. Fungi and parasites are rare causes of conjunctivitis. Some of the possible causes are infectious and contagious (viruses and bacteria), whereas others are not (irritants and allergies). Since many of us have had conjunctivitis, let’s start with a short discussion of our own species and see if any lessons can be learned. We may be able to apply these lessons to the prevention and treatment of pinkeye in other species.
Another lesson from pinkeye in people has to do with venereal disease. Newborns can acquire eye infections when passing through the birth canal. The most common cause of venereal-acquired pinkeye in babies is Chlamydia trachomatis. This bacterial infection may not show signs in either the father or mother but can cause conjunctivitis and pneumonia in newborns.
Conjunctivitis in Sheep and Goats:
Figure 1 - The palpebral conjunctiva is the membrane coating the inner eyelid (arrow). It bulbar or ocular conjunctiva continues and covers the surface of the eye.
Remember that not all cases of conjunctivitis are infectious and contagious. Entropion, or turning in of the eyelid, can occur in lambs. This developmental defect is seen shortly after birth as the eyelashes rub against the cornea and cause inflammation. If there is a genetic predisposition for entropion in a flock, a number of lambs may be affected – but it is not contagious. Entropion can be surgically corrected by a veterinarian. Trauma from grazing in tall grass, or eye irritation from a dust storm, can also cause conjunctivitis in a group of animals but is not infectious or contagious. However, there are many commonly seen contagious causes of pinkeye in sheep and goats.
Conjunctivitis in people: The common causes of conjunctivitis in people are allergies, eye irritants, viruses, and bacteria. Many people suffer from “hay fever” or allergic rhinitis (runny nose) and conjunctivitis. Treatment consists of avoiding the allergen, antihistamines, and soothing eye drops. You may find allergy sufferers with a clean, cool washcloth placed over their closed eyelids as they attempt to flush dust and pollen from their eyes. Decreasing eye irritants can provide relief. This is important to remember when we discuss pinkeye in different species. Gently flushing the eye and eyelids with sterile saline or eye wash solution, Figure 2 - Pinkeye in people or augmenting tears with a clean damp is usually due to a viral infection and can be very cloth can be soothing. But it may be contagious. hard to tell non-contagious eye irritation from contagious pinkeye. We must make sure that whatever measures we take do not spread pinkeye to the unaffected eye or to other people.
Viruses including papilloma (wart) viruses and orf (contagious ecthyma) may affect the Figure 3 - Pinkeye eyelids and be transmissible by contact. The in a goat can be fungal infection called ”ringworm”, our topic caused by a variety of bacterial agents. of discussion in last fall’s issues, can cause hairless, crusty lesions around the eyes. Several parasites (Thelazia, Oestrus ovis, and Elaeophora) may also produce conjunctivitis when larvae invade the conjunctiva. The larvae may be manually removed and treatment with anti-parasitic agents including ivermectin or levmisole may be prescribed by a veterinarian. Ectoparasites such as mange or lice can cause itching and self -trauma to areas around the eye. Even though all these are possibilities to consider, in general, viral, parasitic, and fungal causes of pinkeye in small ruminants are less common than bacterial conjunctivitis. Common bacterial agents in sheep include Rickettsia, Chlamydia, and Mycoplasma, whereas goats are commonly affected by Mycoplasma. Other types of bacteria including Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, E. coli, Pseudomonas, Corynebacteria, and Listeria have also been implicated in small ruminant pinkeye cases.
The term “pinkeye” in people usually refers to viral conjunctivitis. The viruses that cause the “common cold” can cause conjunctivitis, as can many others, and viral conjunctivitis can be very contagious. It is spread easily, especially among highly susceptible, school age children. The viruses can be passed to inanimate objects (desks, toys, books, etc.) by contaminated hands that are rubbing inflamed eyes. (Think about animals rubbing their eyes on fences or feed bunks). That’s why at the first sign of pinkeye, children are excused from april/May 2010
One particular bacterium, Chlamydia psittaci ovis, can cause conjunctivitis as well as abortion in both sheep and goats. Pain, redness, excessive tearing, and squinting are seen, and the agent can spread

rapidly through the flock, hitting the young most severely. Transmission is by direct contact, insect transfer, and contact with objects contaminated by ocular discharge. The condition is common in North America. It usually lasts 6-10 days, with full resolution in 3 weeks, but animals may be blinded by corneal scarring, although many times vision returns with healing. Treatment speeds up the course of infection and may prevent serious complications and loss of vision.

Figure 4- Pinkeye can result in light sensitivity, pain and squinting, and rubbing of the sore eye.
Your veterinarian may try to identify the type of bacteria causing the conjunctivitis in order to guide treatment. Diagnostic techniques include culture, blood testing of affected animals, and conjunctival scrapings. Scrapings are looked at under the microscope and by technology to identify the DNA of the bacteria.

Pinkeye in goats can be a frustrating problem. There are several syndromes with severe eyelid swelling, and unilateral or bilateral corneal opacity (whitening) that may temporarily or permanently blind a goat. Despite treatment with systemic antibiotics and eye ointment, the infection may spread through the herd.

As in sheep and goats, cattle can develop conjunctivitis from irritants, trauma, entropion, and abnormal development of the eyelashes. In certain parts of the West, foxtails can become lodged under eyelids and cause inflammation and damage to the cornea. Checking for, and removing foxtails from inflamed eyes is important, but you must be careful when checking eyes that you do not inadvertently spread infectious pinkeye from animal to animal.

Classic “pinkeye” in cattle is caused by infection with the bacteria Moraxella bovis and is also called infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK). Clinical signs are similar to those in sheep and goats, and include light sensitivity, excessive tearing, squinting, and inflammation of the conjunctiva and corneal surface. Cattle under a year of age are more severely affected with beef cattle having a higher incidence than dairy cattle. Hereford and white-faced cattle Figure 5- A common seem to be at a greater risk. The condition cause of pinkeye in cattle is the bacteria Moraxella occurs throughout North America with the bovis. This is the only highest number of cases in the summer and species where an effective it is proposed that UV radiation damages pinkeye vaccine has been the eye tissues and increases susceptibility developed. to infection. In addition to breed, age, and the amount of UV radiation being factors in developing bovine pinkeye, other risk factors include Vitamin A, selenium, and copper deficiency; mechanical irritation from tall grass; and irritation from dust. Flies (house, stable, and face flies) are important carriers of the bacteria and play a role in transmission. Cattle in the herd can be unapparent carriers of the organism, and may show NO signs of the condition but still be able to spread it to others. New additions to the herd and over-the-fence contact with neighboring cattle may also play a role in direct animal-to-animal transmission. Interestingly, the bacteria are present in the ocular, nasal, and vaginal secretions. M. bovis can be isolated from the eyes of newborn calves, with the dam’s reproductive tract implicated as the source. As with pinkeye in sheep and goats, it is not just animalto-animal contact that can spread the agent- nasal aerosols, insect vectors, and indirect contact with contaminated objects all play a role.

How are you feeling going into a busy show season? If you or your family or friends have experienced a runny nose, a chronic cough, the chills, a high fever and the aches and pains associated with cold and flu season this year, you’re not alone. Labeled as the worst flu season in several years, the bug has affected people of all ages across the United States. Schools have closed, sick days have increased and clinics have been busier than ever.
7. Take time to relax. 8. Include phytochemicals (often found dark green, red and yellow vegetables), yogurt and foods or supplements with antioxidant power. Antioxidants are molecules that slow or prevent the oxidation of chemicals. Recent studies have shown that the molecules can be helpful in maintaining health and preventing disease. But that doesn’t mean you have to gorge yourself on beans, berries and dark chocolate.
The main culprit behind the widespread outbreak of the flu bug stems from an unexpected strain of influenza. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the flu shot this year was only a good match for about 40 percent of this year’s flu virus. Anti-flu drugs such as Tamiflu have been flying off the shelf as doctors have prescribed the drug for treatment and to help prevent the flu in anti-risk patients.
Selenium, a trace element found in varying quantities in soil, is essential for the antioxidant protection of cells and membranes, thyroid hormone metabolism, disease resistance and vaccine response. Research studies on selenium have also linked low selenium intake with the incidence of heart and cellular diseases. Recent studies suggest that good selenium status in humans may lower the risk of some forms of cancer and may boost immune status.
Each winter, health experts have to play a guessing game as to predict which strains of influenza will be the most prevalent that year in order to develop an appropriate vaccine. This year the Type B family proved to be more difficult.
Low selenium content in human foods is becoming a health issue in many parts of the world. Regional variations are reflected in the amount of selenium in plants, including cereal crops. The average intake of selenium is now less than a third of the level in the average American.
After this cold and flu season, many young people may want to reconsider their dependency on flu shots each year and start looking to improve and make healthy lifestyle choices. As often said, prevention can be the best treatment for colds and flu. But that doesn’t mean you have to eat an apple a day to keep the doctor away.
Show animals much like humans can show low immune function when their selenium status is not maximized.
Here are just a few basic tips for keeping those visits to the clinic and your days off from school down:
Sel-Plex®, a natural form of selenium-enriched yeast and natural feed additive for today’s animals, is also available for human consumption. Time after time, livestock owners have turned to SelPlex for their source of organic selenium for their show animals. Now they are turning to the product for themselves. As research continues on the human side, Sel-Plex offers you and your animals’ security as the only FDA reviewed and EU approved organic selenium with over 13 years of academic and field research.
1. Wash your hands. 2. Don’t cover sneezes and coughs with your hands. 3. Don’t touch your face. 4. Drink plenty of fluids. 5. Get fresh air. 6. Exercise regularly.

Berkshires, "The Royal Breed" By Rachelle Bailey
the breed had to offer and wanted to preserve its purity. The group felt that the Berkshires should be kept pure to improve the pork industry. On February 25, 1875, the American Berkshire Association was created. The American Berkshire Association was the first swine registry to be established in the world. The first boar to be recorded was Ace of Spades, bred by Queen Victoria of England. Most of the herds in the United States derived from herds in England.
They were the trend back with the royal family in the 1800’s and today can be found in some trendy restaurants in the bay area, I am talking about none other than Berkshire pork! The Berkshire breed is the oldest recorded breed in the world. Berkshires have been around for a long time and seem to never go out of style. Kings and Queens enjoyed Berkshire pork back in the day and even today people in the United States can still “eat” like kings and queens.
Today, the American Berkshire Association is located in West Lafayette, IN. The American Berkshire Association protects pedigree integrity as well as showcasing the importance of the Berkshire breed. The American Berkshire Association hosts numerous breed conferences throughout the nation and not only has had a major impact on the dinner table but the showring as well. Most Berkshires in the United States were imported from English herds.
History The Berkshire breed was discovered by Oliver Cromwell’s army over three hundred years ago in the quarters at Reading, the county seat of the shire of Berks. When the war was over, veterans had spread the news of Berkshire hogs that roamed the hills. These hogs were large and had very high quality cuts of pork. The Berkshire pork had a “special” and “different” taste to it.
The U.S. wasn’t the only country that wanted Berkshire genetics but Japan was also importing hogs from England as well. The Japanese continue to import Berkshires from the United States and England. “Black Pork” was the name given to the meat by the Japanese who saw the quality of fat which made the Berkshire pork tender and juicy.
Royal Breed Because of the quality taste of the Berkshire pork, upper class farmers and even the royal family loved to consume the meat. For many years the royal family kept a large Berkshire herd at the Windsor Castle. A famous Berkshire was named Windsor Castle, because he was farrowed out near Windsor Castle. This boar was actually imported into the United States in 1841.
Today, the U.S. Pork Industry continues to utilize the quality pork provided by Berkshire hogs. Many markets utilize the breed Ace of Spades was the first Berkshire to be recorded. He was bred by Queen Victoria. because of its consistency and palatability. The Berkshire breed has made a great influence on our industry today and will continue to provide a quality product for the years to come.More info at: www.americanberkshire.com The original Berkshire had sandy colored or reddish hair and sometimes would carry a spotted pattern throughout the body. Later on, the breed was refined with some Chinese blood which brought the color pattern as it is today. Today Berkshire hogs have a black body and six white points, four points being on their legs and white on their nose and tail.
Characteristics
U.S. Berkshires Records have shown that some of the first Berkshires were imported into the United States in the early 1800’s. They were used and populated fast, as many breeders saw improvement in pork.
American Berkshire Association In 1875, a group of established Berkshire breeders and importers met in Springfield, IL. The group saw the importance of what april/May 2010

hygiene and management practices.
and cloudy white spots may appear on the cornea. The condition may heal spontaneously or go on to a more serious ulceration of the cornea. One or both eyes may be affected. If untreated blindness may result from scarring of the cornea. Many other diseases can cause pinkeye in cattle: malignant catarrhal fever, a highly fatal disease, and the viral disease infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR or rednose) are two important ones. Other bacteria, viruses, and the thelazia parasite can also be responsible.
Eye patches may be employed, usually in cattle, to protect the eye during treatment. If the eye infection is severe before it is discovered, or not responding to treatment, your veterinarian may employ other techniques like suturing a conjunctival flap over the cornea to protect it, carefully injecting antibiotics under the conjunctiva, or placing sterile, immune serum from recovered animals onto the eye surface.
Prevention:
Conjunctivitis in Pigs:
There are two important points about pinkeye:
Conjunctivitis may be seen in pigs. Two diseases not found in North America, but that producers should be on the alert for are Hog Cholera and African Swine Fever. Both may cause conjunctivitis. Conjunctivitis may be the first sign of Hog Cholera when pigs present with copious ocular discharge, tearing, and inflammation that progresses to blindness. African Swine fever also may present with conjunctival bleeding, and purulent discharge. Both of these diseases also have fever and other systemic signs and should be brought to the immediate attention of your veterinarian. Chlamydial conjunctivitis can also occur in pigs, and has a similar course as the condition seen in sheep. Edema disease, caused by the toxins of E. coli can produce conjunctivitis and eyelid edema. Swine pox can also cause conjunctivitis. Swine adenoviruses can cause conjunctivitis, pharyngitis, and pneumonia. Depending on the management, pigs are also susceptible to eye irritation from environmental pollutants and noxious gases.
Environmental irritants make pinkeye signs more severe and may increase chances of an outbreak. Excessive tearing from irritation may promote shedding of the infective organism. Infectious pinkeye is spread by both direct contact with infected animals and indirect contact with contaminated objects and insect vectors. Therefore, management strategies to minimize the spread of pinkeye may include: • Isolate affected or recently exposed animals • If animals are in barns, make sure that ventilation is adequate and that humidity is minimized • Mow pastures with long-stem weeds and grasses if you suspect they are irritating the eyes • Implement fly control to prevent insects from spreading the disease (fly tags in calves ears can help) • Provide ample shade so that light sensitive eyes are less irritated • Dispose of contaminated bedding • Maintain clean and sanitized water and feed troughs as this is a common area for animals to contaminate by rubbing their faces • Avoid overcrowding or transporting infected or recently exposed animals • Avoid exhibiting an infected or recently exposed animal
Treatment: Once pinkeye is identified, the animal should be isolated from direct contact with others until the condition is either treated and resolved, or determined to be non-infectious. Always examine the eye and look for a foreign body. If restraint is adequate, flush the eye with eyewash. Try and determine is it is conjunctivitis or if the corneal surface is involved. Call your veterinarian if the cornea is involved.
Prevention in cattle:
If it has been determined, by history, clinical signs or testing, that the pinkeye is due to a bacterial cause, your veterinarian will help you develop a plan. You must be very careful to not transmit the infection to others in the herd on your hands or clothing.
In addition to the above measures, prevention of pinkeye in cattle is aimed at eliminating the carriers of the M. bovis organism, and increasing the resistance to infection by vaccination.
Isolate the pinkeye case and tend to them at the end of the day. Provide separate grooming and feeding equipment for your isolation area.
Mass treating with injectable antibiotics like oxytetracycline or topical eye treatments (1.5% silver nitrate solution) during the nonvector season can be attempted to eliminate carrier cattle. Long-acting tetracycline is labeled for treatment of pinkeye in cattle and you do not need a veterinarian’s prescription if you follow the label instructions (4.5 ml/100 pounds of body weight in the muscle or under the skin every 48 to 72 hours). Other antibiotics may be prescribed by your veterinarian. Some ranchers also treat all newborn calves eyes with topical eye antibacterial ointments to reduce the incidence in calves. There are also numerous vaccines that can be given subcutaneously or intramuscularly to increase herd immunity to the Moraxella bovis bacteria. (Unfortunately, there is no vaccine for the organisms causing pinkeye in sheep and goats.) However, spray-on or powder products have not proven to be effective, and products containing furacin are illegal to use in cattle. Cattle producers should discuss prevention and treatment plans with their veterinarian.
Always wash your hands before and after treating a pinkeye case and preferably wear disposable gloves (and then dispose of them). If you are working out in a field, carry a bucket of soapy water with you. Do not rely on hand sanitizers alone. Change your clothes after handling pinkeye cases and before contacting unaffected animals. Pinkeye can spread like a wildfire If eyes contain discharge or crusting, these should be gently cleaned off with damp gauze. Always use one gauze per eye and dispose of them immediately into a plastic bag for disposal. You may use saline eyewash from the drug store to flush the eye of debris. It is very important that eyes not be allowed to stay sealed shut by crusts or discharge as this can cause corneal ulcers and blindness. Topical therapy with triple (neomycin, polymixin, and bacitracin) or terramycin eye ointment must be given at least three times per day (morning, late afternoon, and bedtime) to be effective. An individual ointment should be dedicated to each case so that it does not contribute to the spread of disease.
Finally, with regards to prevention, exhibitors should be very careful not to bring pinkeye back with them from the show. We’ve learned that there are many infectious causes of pinkeye, and that unapparent carriers can exist. It would be advised to isolate returning animals for 2 weeks or so to make sure that they remain healthy before placing them back with the main herd or flock.
Many of the bacteria (Chlamydia, Rickettsia, Moraxella and Mycoplasma) implicated in conjunctivitis are susceptible to tetracycline. If topical eye ointment is not a practical solution, systemic treatment may be recommended with short-acting or long- acting oxytetracycline. Be sure to follow your veterinarian’s direction for dose and length of treatment (don’t stop too early), and meat and/or milk withdrawal times. Many producers use both topical and systemic treatment to quickly resolve cases and prevent spread to others. Do not overly rely on treatment without also implementing improved april/May 2010
Conclusion:
Pinkeye can be caused by environmental irritants, viruses, bacterial, and even fungi and parasites. In particular, bacterial pinkeye is a frustrating, rapidly spreading condition. Early detection, isolation, and treatment of cases, and implementing management factors and improved hygiene can minimize a pinkeye outbreak.

CJLA News
Until next time, keep on showing - and have fun! Contact: Mary Ann Bush (831) 623-4316 Heidi Beljean (408) 888-2503
Whew!! We have been swamped with CJLA membership applications this year! The grand total for 2010 is over 300 members! It is really exciting to see so many kids and families participating in our organization. A Big Welcome to all our returning members, and to all those who have joined for the first time. This year, we requested e-mail addresses on the membership form. If we got yours, then you were sent a message from me when we processed your application. I have set up an e-mail address that you can reach me at directly (Mary Ann Bush) — cjlainfo@yahoo.com. I will be sending out news, updates, and highlights throughout the year and you can contact me here with any questions about points, rules, shows, etc. In addition, all information will be printed in the magazine, and items which need your reply will continue to be mailed to you. If you did not give us your -email address and would like to be added to our contact list, please send me a message at cjlainfo@yahoo.com. We are also in the process of updating the official CJLA website. Check it out soon at www. californiajuniorlivestock.org. Both Heidi Beljean and I can also be contacted through the website. Please contact us at any time if you have questions, concerns, suggestions, or ideas. We would love to hear from you!

In this issue, you will want to check out our feature spread about the CJLA Award Banquet that was held on February 13th in Paso Robles. What an exciting event it was, as we celebrated our 10th anniversary and the accomplishments of the CJLA members. One more reminder - Keep track of your points throughout the year. Call or email me anytime you have any questions at all so I can check my records. It is much easier to verify information if you call when you have a question instead of waiting until the end of the year. Please check for your name in this issue under the specie divisions you joined for 2010. You will notice that I have not listed any points here. Talk about bad luck! - my computer had some issues and when I got it back up and running, some of my records had been eaten! Needless to say, I have had to re-enter some information and I was not able to get it all done before we went to print. It is my plan to get more show points entered and then e-mail these pages, in the next few weeks, to the CJLA members who provided their addresses to us.

New Arrivals on the Junior Livestock Scene! Something didn’t match up in the last issue, so we looked at the calving book and re-checked herd id’s. Sure enough, the boys were in the wrong pastures. With a little fast riding and a good rope, we got those babies caught and paired back up with their Moms and Dads! Mark and Christy Andrade, San Juan Bautista, announce the birth of their son, Hunter Thomas, born February 2, 2010, weighing 9 lbs. 2 oz. He was welcomed home by big sister, Madison, Grandparents Dan and Mary Ann Bush, and Uncle Dustin Bush.

is a wonderful part of the program, but we all need to realize that each show only has one grand and one reserve. Success in a youth livestock project is not always attached to a purple banner! Work ethic, responsibility, animal husbandry, and shaking that person’s hand that beat you are often far more important life lessons than getting to hang that banner on the wall.
By Terry L. Burks
Spring is always my favorite time of year. Not because it means the end of winter (which I am especially thankful is over for this year), but because it signals the beginning of project animal selection time. As a breeder, I find it especially fun to begin shearing the new kid crop to see whether my breeding decisions were correct or if I need to try again next year. I often tell my wife that it is just like opening presents at Christmas! Each time I shear a kid I like to evaluate that animal for its good and bad points (my wife also says that I am the only person she knows that can turn a ten minute shearing into a 3 hour process because I study each goat entirely too much!) and then determine the best way to market that particular animal. I also receive considerable joy watching families come to the farm and sort through the crop as they begin to develop their wish-list for the upcoming sale season. I also enjoy receiving those hundreds of phone calls this time of year as potential customers call in regards to kids they have seen on our video and answer their questions as to the pros or cons of each potential prospect. Although this time of year is extremely busy with shearing, advertising, prepping for sales, etc., it is also a wonderful time to visit with old friends and repeat customers and likewise meet new folks and make new friends as each begin their quest to find this year’s show-string.
2. Have a game plan. It always amazes me the number of people that invest a small fortune in an animal and never have a plan of how or what they are going to do with that animal to make him his best when they reach the show that they desire to win. Think about your facilities, your nutrition program, your exercise program, your weight management program, your fitting process, etc. All these factors are critical to meet your goal, if the banner is your ultimate goal. 3. Different judges have different opinions. Be sure to study and learn everything you can about the person that has been hired to judge your goat show. Just because an animal has won every show that you have attended does not mean that goat will automatically win the next time you show him/her. Reading the gossip on the internet is also not a very sound means to determine what a particular judge likes or dislikes. We all need to realize that most posts on the internet are placed there by someone that usually did not have a good day under that judge. Ask questions to the breeders of your animal. Odds are they have sold other animals that have been shown to a particular judge. They will generally give you a more honest opinion about what that particular judge prefers. Additionally, they may be able to point you towards a goat that will actually fit that judges preferences. 4. Big money does not mean big success! Unfortunately in the goat world, the big money has arrived. There were a number of goats shown around the country this year that were purchased for prices exceeding $10,000 and I heard as high as $20,000. True, occasionally that big dollar animal does win, but more often than not that animal gets beat by a much cheaper goat that happened to fit the particular judge a bit better. I can personally guarantee that no quality junior livestock judge cares what someone paid for a particular prospect animal. Now before you get carried away and fuss at me because you think I am talking about you, realize that the amount you give for your next prospect is entirely your business and shouldn’t matter to anyone else. I think it is fine that some families spend that kind of money in the youth livestock program. But we all must realize that if that family wins, it is because in addition to their investment they also probably worked the hardest, had the best feeding program, the best exercise program and had the animal best suited to their particular judge. If they do not have all these variables in place, no amount of money will buy a purple banner. Likewise, we all need to understand that regardless of the initial investment price we must not become barn blind. Many folks get extremely upset with judges (I know firsthand) because they just assume that if they invested that much money that animal must be a great one and deserves the purple. I got news for you…initial investment means nothing!
I do however understand that this can be a trying time for many families due to our present economy. I have never met a family that did not want to buy the best animal possible for their son or daughter, but due to potential job losses, etc. this year may be a difficult one due to these financial situations. Many families travel thousands of miles and sort through hundreds of animals looking for that “one” and I truly believe that this becomes a special bonding time for families and a time in the young person’s life that they will never forget spending with their family as they attempt to find the next great one. I encourage you either as a parent, grandparent or youth to treasure this special time of year that you spend with your family. The life lessons you learn when meeting new people, discussing a potential breeder’s livelihood and likewise those little pointers that you pick-up from each breeder you visit are truly priceless in terms of their value to you and your project animal. Additionally, the personal contacts that you make with breeders this time of year are crucial for your future. I can not tell you the number of recommendation letters that I have written for college entrance or even job procurement for young people that I have met because their mom and dad brought them to the farm to look at that year’s prospects. More specifically, I can also tell you that every job I have had in my life was due to a contact that I made as a child looking for that next potential winner.
As you begin your search this spring, whether many miles away or in your backyard, keep these 4 guideposts in mind. This time of year can be the most enjoyable part of any youth livestock project. And do not forget, give mom and dad a big hug and thank them for being a part of the most special time of your life!
As you venture out this spring to begin your quest of finding that next champion, I would like to challenge you to think about a couple of issues as you get started… 1. Set some goals for your project year. Realize that goals need to be high enough that they are challenging, yet low enough they can be met. For many folks, their goal is to win a particular show. Winning april/May 2010
Good Luck!

He attended Dillard School in Wilton and went to Elk Grove High School. He went on to attend college and graduated from Santa Clara University in 1956 with a degree in business. He retired at the age of 62 when he dedicated himself to the running of his cattle ranch “Black Jack Ranch” and enjoyed vacationing in the Hawaiian Islands.
What
He leaves behind his 101 year old father Joseph, his wife of 50 years Yvonne, and his 5 children: Deanna (Kevin, Teresa, Michele, Joseph (Veronica), and Nicole. His pride and joy were his 8 grandchildren: Alexandria, AJ, Jessen, Dallas, Dakota, McKenna, Lewis, and Cheyenne.
When
Albert dedicated his life to the thing he held most dear to him, his family.
Where

Why
Because you want to spend your hard earned advertising dollars with the BEST! It’s a smart move to advertise with the Purple Circle - we get the job done for the best prices! The Purple Circle serves as a showcase, a public arena, from which people from coast to coast can promote their livestock and products and to acknowledge 4-H and FFA exhibitors from other areas of the Country. You’ll also keep up to date with the latest trends and find what you are looking for by subscribing to Purple Circle.
Though he has moved on he will remain with us, his memory, his sayings, his wisdom, his loyalty, his strength, and his unconditional love will continue to light our way.
