FROM THE

EDITOR What a difference a year makes! This time last year we were in the early months of an unprecedented pandemic. Shutdowns, mandates, masks, quarantines, plus uncertainty about jobs and schools and health were front and center in everyone’s lives. Looking back I can see how good things came out of it all – how people rallied and rose up to try to provide for others, to provide show opportunities for our livestock youth, to still provide support where needed. Even at the first of this year, while venues were trying to open up, the state was still shutting things down. Now the scene is looking pretty good. I won’t say it’s all in the past, but with cautious optimism we are moving ahead.

There were some casualties though. Our California State Fair was one of them. It is so disappointing to those who looked forward to someday competing there and having the chance to win a Golden Bear. For those who have a Bear on their shelf, those memories are even more special. The California Youth Ag Expo has stepped up to fill the void left by the closing of the State Fair so I encourage everyone to check out what they have to offer! New goals for a new stage!

County Fairs are opening and most are planning for their junior livestock shows and sales. The format may be a bit different than in the past, but it sounds like live shows are back and that is so exciting! And for those students stuck learning from home for the past year and a half, in-person classes will be happening in the Fall! I know some had part-time classes or full schedules already but things are getting back to more “normal”!

Pacific Showcase limits its liability resulting from any and all errors, misprints and/or other inaccuracies in the advertisements and editorial content. The opinions or views expressed in all editorials are those only of the writer or persons interviewed and not the Pacific Showcase.

One thing I think is important to not forget about this whole Covid thing is what did you learn from it? Were you able to adapt and move forward? If you were raising a market animal, were you able to switch gears and figure out how to market your animal virtually? I hope you will take the skills you learned and continue to use them. If anything, we all should have learned to be more prepared for the unexpected.

Reproductions or other use of this magazine in whole or part of the contents without written permission of the editor is prohibited. Pacific Showcase welcomes readers contributions. Articles of interest, show results, sale results, and calendar dates are welcome and will be printed on space available. To have articles or pictures returned, include a stamped, selfaddressed envelope. Send all submissions to address above.

As summer wraps up and school starts again, the fall project sales will start up. We all owe a huge thanks to the breeders who have continued with their programs to produce great show prospects for you to choose from. They faced so many challenges through the pandemic and now face rapidly rising feed and production costs. If they can stay positive, so can you! Make your plans, study sale offerings, and choose your next project!

Pacific Showcase is published bimonthly. It is mailed first class and third class bulk mail at Morgan Hill, California. Postmaster: send address changes to Pacific Showcase, P.O. Box 41430, San Jose, CA 95160. Subscriptions: (Bulk mail - one year - $25; two years - $45.) (First class - one year - $35; two years $65.) For processing of new subscriptions - please allow 4 to 6 weeks. For address corrections, send current mailing label along with new address to Pacific Showcase.

The CJLA got off to a bumpy start this year with all the shows in January and February having to cancel. That made it impossible for us to have our annual Award Ceremony in February and we were further hindered by mandates from the state not allowing us to gather. So we know it’s really late in the year but we will have the 2020 Award Presentation at the Harvest Moon Jackpot in Bakersfield in November. We will keep everyone updated with details as we get everything worked out. Check out the upcoming events section and the CJLA Calendar for all the shows scheduled for the rest of the year! And we are already getting shows calling to schedule their sanctioned shows for next year!

Time to Plan Ahead! The September/October 2021 Issue is our

Before I close, I just want to put out a reminder to send in pictures for our Hot Shot section and news of upcoming events. If you are a breeder, contact me to get listed in our Breeders Directory – this is a great reference for those looking for project animals! How can I help you reach more potential customers? We have lots of advertising options – give me a call!

ABOUT THE

COVER

By now, everyone is about worn out on hearing about the repercussions of the pandemic and what it did to most of our lives. I would argue that the year 2020 will be one we never forget, but not for all of the reasons of negativity. 2020, for those of us involved in this industry, will be remembered as a year of change. One that brought much needed reform, and an injection of passionate people who were reminded how important this industry truly is when we got a taste of loosing what we have all been used to as our normal way of life. It reminded us the most important lesson learned form the Junior livestock experience is when adversity hits those who have been brought up in this way of life have the tools to dig deep and find a way! From our company's perspective, at a time when shows began to cancel and many would have thought people would throw in the towel on their projects, it was quite the opposite. We never saw our feed business waver, a true testimony to the grit of the young people we get to work with on a daily basis. With questions as to the fate of the shows you originally intended your projects to be exhibited at, it was never an option to take care of them any differently than if they were on track as normal. We watched as so many led by example and turned a broken show schedule into one of the most creative and memorable summers. We at Rival Feeds can’t thank you all enough for allowing us to be part of the experience and continuing to prove that we are involved in the greatest youth activity and industry out there. Thank you for the unrivaled memories, we can’t wait to be a part of many more to come!

CJLA NEWS & UPDATES Hi Everyone! I know everyone is waiting for points to be posted! I’m not sure why, but it has been pretty slow getting show reports sent to us this year. Some shows have been right on it – sending them to me immediately after their show. The others-very slow. I don’t know if it’s due to starting back up after the Covid shutdown or so much going on that once their show is over, they are on to other things. But as we go to print with this issue, I am waiting on 3 shows and some missing results from another. It is very hard on our end to enter results out of order and also very confusing for anyone trying to read a point report when not everything is included so I wait to publish totals until I have a complete report up to that point. Not making excuses here but I know that CJLA is the one that gets blamed for things being slow and I want to make it known that it is a whole process so if one part is behind, it slows down the entire line. With all that said, I am doing my best to get everything entered on my end, and once I have an up-to-date report, I will E-blast it to everyone!

event for their updates and entry information! Updates are on the CJLA website and Facebook also!

What about the awards for 2020? We have finally been able to set a plan for the 2020 awards ceremony! We wanted to have an in-person event and Heidi was able to get it set up to be held during the Harvest Moon Jackpot at Kern County Fairgrounds in Bakersfield! The dates for that show are November 20-21. With all species being shown there, we are hopeful that the majority of our members will be attending and we can present their awards. As soon as we have details, we will let everyone know. Your patience is appreciated! We will keep you posted with all updates as we have them!

Are you interesting in helping out with the CJLA Awards Program?

We do have some show updates that you can plan on for the rest of the year! Start off September with the NEW SHOW - Slots of Fun Jackpot at the Rolling Hills Equestrian Center in Corning, followed by Cow Palace! Yes it is back and scheduled for October 7-10th! October rounds out with The Spotlight on Quality Jr. Shorthorn Jackpot and Field Day in Chowchilla on Otober 23-24th and the Oktoberfest Boer Goat Jackpot Show set for October 23-24th. The Autumn Classic is November 5-7th in Placerville. And NEW SHOW – Clash for Cash Fall Extravaganza Cattle Show is set for November 12-14th at Yuba Fairgrounds. The Harvest Moon Jackpot in Bakersfield is a go for November 20-21st and The Holiday Classic also at Kern County Fairgrounds is on for Dec. 11-12th. Also the CNHA Hereford Classic Jr Heifer & Steer Jackpot Show will be held at Yuba Sutter Fairgrounds – Yuba City. It is CJLA Sanctioned for Hereford Heifers AND NEW NEW NEW! They have sanctioned a CJLA STEER SHOW! Will have all CJLA steer divisions! Be sure to check out their Facebook pages and websites for each

We are completely reliant upon donations and sponsorships to cover the costs of awards. With the set-backs due to Covid and our unfortunate delays in being able to schedule our award ceremony, we are way behind in getting the donations we need to meet our goals for awards! If you would like to help, donating is easy! You can go to our website – www.cjlainfo.com and click on the “Donate” button. Or you can call Heidi and talk to her – she can take your information over the phone or discuss what you would like to do. Please consider how you can help! We appreciate your support!
