FROM THE
EDITOR What a difference a year makes! Truer words were never spoken! One thing I always do when I get ready to write my editorial is to look back at what I wrote the previous year. It is a good reminder picture of what was going on 12 months ago. In my 2019 July editorial, I talked about preparing for county and state fairs and hitting the road to national shows. You all should be doing the same thing now, but by now we all know how different this year is.
P.O. Box 41430 • San Jose, CA 95160 (408) 888-2503 Publisher & Managing Editor: Heidi Beljean — (408) 888-2503 Email: pacshow@earthlink.net
This is my State Fair issue, which normally would be going out to the California State Fair and to State Fairs throughout the west. But one after the other, state fair after state fair has been cancelled. I could never have imagined a scenario where the country would be in lockdowns and quarantines. Even our county fairs have been cancelled, but they are doing their best to provide some kind of plan to help kids get their projects marketed. It is awesome to see so many people step up to help in any way they can.
Production Manager & Art Director: William Crump — (662) 305-5434 Email: pacificshowcase@gmail.com Instagram and Facebook Management: Kaela Cooper – kaelacooper@aol.com
I think it is important to look on the positive side and determine what you can learn from this pandemic. How can you move forward? Sure, your plans and goals have drastically changed, but I challenge you to view it as a learning experience! Were you in a rut, or taking selling your animal at the fair for granted, and now you need to change your marketing approach? It is a great time to use social media to your advantage! Go virtual! I for one have enjoyed seeing so many Facebook posts and kids sharing their project experiences. It may not be how you used to do it, but we will definitely see more “social selling” in the future!

The pandemic hasn’t just affected the junior exhibitors; it is affecting all the breeders who are raising prospects for next year’s fairs and shows. Their plans are made months and months ahead. Calves are already on the ground; lambs, goats and hogs have been bred for the early shows; or plans have been made for breeding for summer and fall shows. I know it’s difficult to plan when we don’t know what lies ahead, but I have to believe that 2021 will bring more normal times where we can attend events and sales and shows. As summer wraps up and school starts again (in some form or fashion!), the fall project sales will start up. So stay positive and plan for your projects for the 2021 show season!

When I spoke earlier about the people who have stepped up at the county fairs, I also have to give a shout-out to those who have put together virtual shows and to those in surrounding states who have made some live shows happen. Kids and families from many states have made the road trip to those live shows so they could get in the ring! What fun to go and meet new people, compete with those animals you have worked so hard on and had such big plans for, and to see other states!
Subscriptions: (Bulk mail - one year - $25; two years - $45.) (First class - one year - $35; two years $65.) For processing of new subscriptions - please allow 4 to 6 weeks. For address corrections, send current mailing label along with new address to Pacific Showcase.
Another thing that has been affected by the shutdowns is our CJLA shows. Everything came to an abrupt halt in the later part of March. We are working on what will happen in the fall and will let you know as soon as we have a definite game plan. We know you are excited to get back in the ring and go after those points! And thank you for your patience with the current points being posted. We have a new person doing the tabulating, and with some issues in setting up a new recording system, it has taken a bit longer than expected. Be sure to check out the CJLA section in this issue.
Time to Plan Ahead! The September/October 2020 Issue is our
#2 Western State Fairs and Club Calf Issue
In this issue, I love the Graduation Section! It always makes me feel a bit older when I see kids graduating that I watched when they first started showing. I do love seeing their photos from when they were little to where they are now, and reading about their future plans and dreams – where their next step in life will take them! These Seniors are the future of the livestock industry! If they pursue a field in agriculture, they have a background to help them reach and excel in their goals. If they go on to another field, those days spent in the barn and at the fair have given them a work ethic unmatched by any other endeavor and an undying appreciation for production agriculture. Congratulations, Seniors! May your stars always shine brightly!

ABOUT THE
COVER
Kerlee Cattle Company is located in the small town of Denair, CA. They focus on raising, selling and showing purebred Shorthorns, Maines, Charolais and Chi’s as well as club calves. Their cattle operation is definitely a family affair. Maddi’s dream since she was eight years old in 4-H was to someday own and operate a cattle ranch and sell prospect calves. With the financial assistance of her husband and the help of her youngest son, Aaron, her dreams have come true. After graduating from Redlands Community College with a degree in Animals Science, Aaron chose to leave Oklahoma and come back home to help on the ranch. He assists with daily chores, irrigating, processing, and breeding decisions as well as prepping sale calves.
a luncheon on Saturday, October 3, 2020. It’s a great time to get together, look at calves, talk with other livestock enthusiast and enjoy a delicious meal. Our calves will sell on SC Online Sales on Wednesday, October 7, 2020.
One entity that Kerlee Cattle enjoys most about ranching is calving season. It’s exciting to witness the outcome of decisions made from the previous year. Whether they are flushing their own cows, purchasing embryos from elite breeders across the country or artificial inseminating there is a lot of planning that must be calculated. Raising and selling high quality show stock is their primary goal. Observing the genetic improvements made in their herd is what keeps them excited to be part of this great industry. With that being said we are extremely excited about the offering we have available this year. Whether you’re looking for a breeding heifer, prospect steer or market heifer we’ve got you covered. Our calves are started on grain, haltered, rinsed and worked with daily. We take pride is selling not only good stock, but a program you can count on when you have questions or concerns. We would like to invite you to evaluate the cattle and to join us for 9

New Youth Livestock Show Launches in California
The California Youth Ag Expo is coming to the International Agri-Center in Tulare, California. By J.D. Rosman In order to ensure the viability of this competitive show, we’ve brought the leaders in the livestock show industry, the team at the Oklahoma Youth Expo, out west to manage the show for our exhibitors.
A new youth livestock show is opening its doors in Tulare, California, August 5 through August 9, providing a new opportunity for California youth exhibitors to showcase their livestock. The California Youth Ag Expo is a new live, in person stock show, and was formed in 2020 open to youth exhibits of beef cattle, sheep, goats and swine.
“I hope you’ll join us August 5 through August 9 for what will surely be an incredibly competitive week here on the West Coast,” Bayne said.
“We are incredibly excited to launch the California Youth Ag Expo,” said Curtis Bayne, co-founder of the CYAE. “Not only is this providing a much needed opportunity for our California ag youth to show their livestock this year, but it is a show we hope will only continue to grow for decades to come!”
A full show schedule and additional information is forthcoming and will be available at calyouthexpo.com and on all of our social media accounts. For more information on the California Youth Ag Expo visit calyouthexpo.com or contact the Oklahoma Youth Expo team at 405-235-0404.
We aren’t just here for a year, said CYAE co-founder, Jake Parnell.
The California Youth Ag Expo was founded in 2020. As a 501(C)(3) non-profit organization, California 4-H and FFA members have the opportunity to exhibit their livestock projects at a highly competitive livestock show. For more information about the California Youth Ag Expo visit calyouthexpo.com.
“Our goal for the California Youth Ag Expo is for it to one day become one of the most competitive livestock shows on the West Coast,” Parnell said.

CJLA NEWS & UPDATES This Coronavirus pandemic has been a tough blow to have our sanctioned shows. With our last show held at the end of March, everything since then has been forced to cancel their events. We have been waiting to see how things develop and if we will be able to complete the year with the fall shows. While we don’t have definite answers yet, I can tell you that we have communicated with our sanctioned shows and several want to put on their show if at all possible. We will keep you updated via our website, Facebook page and by E-blast as updates are available. We also recommend that you check with each show through their media sites to get information from them immediately. Working together, we will get it all figured out! Keep thinking positive and stay hopeful!
standstill, it is easy to forget that your support is still needed. The awards given out each year are made possible by donations. If you have pledged your support and haven’t sent it in yet, we hope you will still get that done. If you want to support and need to change something, please contact Heidi. Or if you want to support going forward, Heidi can help you with that also. One thing that has come to the forefront of this pandemic, is all of the services and individuals that are affected with reduced or loss of income. Organizations such as our CJLA are also affected. We make it work from year to year and hope and pray we can keep doing that! The new normal may have a different look, but working together it can be done!
THE POINTS ARE POSTED IN THIS ISSUE! ALL THE SHOWS THAT HAVE BEEN HELD ARE INCLUDED. Remember, if you went to more than 8 shows, your top 8 total is listed. We have a new person tabulating the points. She is using a different program than we have had in the past for recording results, and there is a learning curve to remembering all the rules and divisions, and processing show results that are sent in different formats. Please check your totals listed and if you have any questions, contact me at cjlainfo@yahoo.com. Please give me some specifics on what you have questions about!
I think this is about all the news for now... so go full speed into the weeks and months ahead! Set new goals and work hard to achieve them! Be sure to enjoy the journey along the way! Stay safe, and be sure to thank your crew that helps you get it all done. CJLA Questions? One more thing I would like to mention, and that is about donating to the CJLA program. We realize that with everything at a
Must-Read Information for CJLA Members CJLA Announces Plans for Remainder of 2020 Covid-19 has put the CJLA in turmoil as it has shut down our sanctioned shows since late March. None of us expected it to affect everything for so long or to cause so much uncertainty for the months ahead. We have been following the situation closely and have just met with our Senior Advisory Board to discuss ideas on how to proceed for the rest of the year. While we realize the future is unpredictable and each week and month can bring changes, it has been decided to continue the year as we normally would and hope that some shows will be able to open up and hold an event for our CJLA members to compete at. We will not be adding any new sanctioned shows to our schedule and only currently sanctioned shows will be used for points if they are held.
JULY/AUGUST 2020
Likewise, we will not be adding any virtual shows or allowing our currently sanctioned shows to hold a virtual show for points. According to the 2020 CJLA Rules and Regulations, no changes or additions could be made after March 31st of a current year so in order to be fair to our members and sanctioned events, we cannot make changes that are not in accordance with those published rules. We will continue to work closely with our sanctioned show managers to keep everyone updated on what’s happening in the months ahead. Thank you for your patience and understanding! CJLA will continue to support our youth members and we all look forward to things returning to normal for 2021!

THE FFA IN YOUR STATE FFA News from our Western States Oregon
As the Covid-19 pandemic swept through the country, lives, school, plans, and upcoming events, were being changed daily. As it became apparent that even events in the near future were going to have to cancel, FFA Associations in every state immediately jumped into action to formulate plans to hold virtual events. The resiliency of FFA is to be commended and admired as one goes online and views post after post and video after video. It wasn’t the same as having a live convention for members to attend, but the FFA spirit is alive and well and brings great hope for the future. Be sure to check out the websites and Facebook pages for each state FFA Association for all the highlights of their “Virtual” conventions.
