FROM THE

EDITOR As I am sitting here at my desk, I can look out a window that gives me a scenic view of the trees and hills that edge our property and above that to an unbroken expanse of sky. Today that sky, and in fact all the way down past the tree line, is completely filled with smoke. It's been smoky for days – from gray and dreary to a weird orange glow plus ash filtering down to cover everything in its path. My heart is breaking for all the western states fighting fires that rage out of control and are difficult to contain. I know a lot of people that have had to evacuate and are hoping they don’t lose everything - it is scary thinking about it – and terrifying to live through it! Most of you who read my magazine are animal owners – whether it is chickens and ducks, or livestock or horses, you think of those critters first in any emergency. And if you are not in the thick of the emergency, then you are the ones who are jumping in to help with evacuations, offering pens and barns, or hauling feed to displaced animals. In the midst of disaster, it still brings a good feeling to the heart to know good people are out here for those in need! Thank you from the bottom of my heart to everyone who helps in some way!

So on one hand wildfires are burning, and on the other hand, we are still dealing with the COVID pandemic. Now so much is changing for fall. Students are attending school from their kitchen table or bedroom desk, there are no sports or music or school programs to be a part of. Most fairs have been virtual experiences for their 4-H and FFA exhibitors, and most of the jackpots have cancelled unless they have been able to find a venue that could host a live show.

Those who are breeding animals geared toward junior exhibitors showing at their county and state fairs, or jackpotting throughout the upcoming months – they had to make breeding decisions months before COVID hit – or during the early months of the pandemic. Should they breed for early fairs? Or later fairs? Will they have buyers for their prospects? The people I have talked with have been hopeful. They are staying positive and keep the faith that things will get better and return to a somewhat normal scenario. They believe that the kids who love to raise an animal and believe in the programs and the industry will continue to do so. I believe that too! Our youth are still our future in agriculture! Let’s continue to support their endeavors and the programs that have been developed for them! Keep a positive outlook and things WILL get better!

Check out the CJLA section in this issue. We had a majority of shows cancel due to COVID this year but several are still planning their events for the upcoming months. Our 2020 members hit the show road prior to March and will be heading out in the fall to those last shows. We still plan to recognize and reward their efforts and hard work with a year-end award ceremony just like we always do. With that goal, we need your help to make it all happen! Please read over the Sponsor Information and think about how you can help CJLA reach its’ goals. All donations go directly to awards for our members. Every little bit helps – now more than ever! Give me a call if you have any questions, thoughts, or ideas. I would love to hear from you!

I feel like the excitement level for the 2020-21 show season is at an all time high because of this and I can’t wait to kick it off. At Rodgers Livestock we have utilized the energy of our customers and while the summer of ‘20 ended up being one of the most successful as far as show results for our cattle we are motivated more than ever before. We can’t wait to share the excitement and offer one of the most promising groups of cattle to date for the upcoming show year. Cattle will be available at all times through private treaty purchase as well as a couple online sales throughout the fall. Our hope is to provide everyone with the best fit possible and look forward to discussing what your goals are and to help fulfill them!

ABOUT THE

COVER

While the storyline of the year 2020 has tended to be somewhat challenging, and one that many are ready to see be a part of the past, I truly believe some of the most incredible things have happened for our industry and youth. A huge thank you goes out to so many across the nation who have stepped up and reinforced how remarkable and resilient our agricultural community is by making sure there were shows to attend. The changes to our livestock shows have been nothing short of remarkable and I truly believe in so many areas have forced us to follow through with a much needed overhaul that is going to implement the change and additions we have needed. Many times the comfort of a routine can bring on complacency and I really believe this was the shot in the arm we needed to step up and make great things happen. It has truly been inspirational to watch the young people as they have pushed through all of this in a time with so many questions and every reason to quit. I know I have become a better person watching so many of our kids grit it out and never give up. Showing this summer has been one of my favorite times I can remember and not for the reasons I have usually based it off of. The competitiveness of the shows was as tough as ever but what resonated even louder for me was the attitude and mindset of everyone at them. Once again we were a livestock family. The normal we had all searched for the last six months that had evaded us was now a level of excitement and success far greater than any other time or win. To watch the kids interact and see many of their friends for the first time in several months put it all in perspective.

CJLA NEWS & UPDATES plication. WE HAVE MOVED THE DATE TO “JOIN BY” TO JUNE 1st and lowered the age to join from age 9 to age 8! Points will begin once we receive your application and payment. Points will not be awarded retroactively. If you go to shows before you join, those shows would not count for points. You can fill it out and mail in with payment or go to the CJLA website and fill out the online membership and pay there. This year 95% of our memberships were done through the website and it worked out great! We are keeping our fingers crossed that 2021 will be better. Maybe not like it used to be, but at least smoother. We will also be reviewing our CJLA RULES to address unexpected situations such as those that came up this year.

COVID-19 has changed so many things for everyone and the CJLA has been no exception. All our shows since the end of March were cancelled and everyone is waiting to see what lies ahead. The livestock community has done a fantastic job of picking up and forging ahead – trying to do as much as possible and offer as many opportunities as possible for show kids. From virtual jackpots to virtual county fairs and junior auctions, and some out-of-state live shows that were able to be held, it is clear that no one has given up on keeping this industry alive! Plus, our sanctioned shows have been exhausting all possibilities to see if they could somehow still make their event happen. In the last issue, we announced that it was decided to continue the year as was planned and to see what upcoming shows will happen. We have regularly checked in with our shows and it looks like the shows that will be a go are the Northern Exposure Fall Classic, the Northern Exposure Jr. Cattle Show, and the Autumn Classic Show. We have also just received word that the Oktoberfest Boer Goat Show is working to make their event happen. This will make all our divisions (except for the wether dam ewe division) having 10 or more shows held for the year. (The ewe division would have 7). CJLA counts the top 8 shows for year-end points so while there have been less total shows held, at least the minimum has been met.

One more thing I would like to mention, and that is about donating to the CJLA program. We realize that with everything at a standstill, it is easy to forget that your support is still needed. The awards given out each year are made possible by donations. Please look over the Sponsor Information in this issue. Let us know how you are interested in helping. One thing that has come to the forefront of this pandemic, is all of the services and individuals that are affected with reduced or loss of income. Organizations such as our CJLA are also affected. We make it work from year to year and hope and pray we can keep doing that! The new normal may have a different look, but working together it can be done!

In this issue, the points are included with any updates or corrections that were brought to our attention since the last issue. PLEASE CHECK OUT YOUR TOTALS ON THIS REPORT AND CONTACT US ASAP (send email to cjlainfo@yahoo.com) IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS!

Go full speed into the weeks and months ahead! Set new goals and work hard to achieve them! Be sure to enjoy the journey along the way! Stay safe, and be sure to thank your crew that helps you get it all done.

ALSO IN THIS ISSUE IS THE NEW 2021 CJLA MEMBERSHIP FORM! CHECK OUT THE CHANGES!! With the current uncertainty about what the COVID situation will be at the first part of year, we are making some changes so we can adapt to situations that may come up. With that in mind, there are two changes to joining that you will see on the membership ap-

How to Prepare Your Calves for Fall Sales Midwest state fairs often signify the end of a show season for many young cattle exhibitors, but with every ending comes a new beginning. Soon, cattle operations will be offering this year’s calf crop through their fall sales to potential buyers who are already making plans for their next show season. It’s enjoyable to walk through runs of nicely groomed, gentle calves. But this process doesn’t happen overnight. Blaine Rodgers, owner of Rodgers Livestock, Savannah, Missouri, shares his sales preparation tips and advice with those looking to host a sale this fall. Calf health is the first area that Rodgers said needs to be addressed, and that starts with a booster round of vaccinations. Regardless if a calf is raised and weaned on Rodgers’ place or a calf he has brought in from another breeder, he said it is vital to make sure the calves start out healthy. “Their immune system becomes compromised by all the stress they are put through, so we need to make sure they start out healthy. On the cattle I get in on consignment, I can tell you who does a good job and who doesn’t just by how they react (to the stress). You’ve got to make sure you’ve got a good handle on their health before you get started,” he said. Rodgers keeps records of all the vaccinations and dewormer the cattle are given along with the dates they are administered for further referSEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2020

ence. He also records any time he has to treat a calf, because as he said even the best manager will have some illness throughout the fall, especially with fluctuations in temperatures being so extreme. “Our biggest challenge right now is monitoring them daily on temperature and environmental changes. The fluctuation in temperatures are hard on them. On extremely hot days, we try to bring them all in and put them under fans so they can stay cool, but we prefer to let them stay out in the lots with round bales and let them be cattle as much as we can,” he said. Rodgers suggests monitoring health early each morning before the heat of the day sets in. If you do have one that gets sick, separate it and get it treated. Make sure it is feeling 100% again before you put it back with the group to ensure that it won’t relapse due to the stress of daily care or extra movement through the pens. When commingling calves from various origins, it is important to look for signs of coccidiosis. The young calves are susceptible to coccidiosis, and it can cause them to go backward, or lose performance in a hurry. Rodgers suggests adding an ionophore to the feed. If a person is unsure of their calf’s diagnosis, they should collect and test a stool sample to ensure proper treatment.

One of the most important ways to keep your calves healthy and get that bloomy appearance on them is through a good nutrition program. Always be sure to provide your calves with plenty fresh, clean, cool water. Even when in the barns under fans, Rodgers said it is imperative to offer the calves a water source. And always be sure to keep plenty of hay in front of them to keep their rumens functioning, since a healthy digestive system typically lends itself to a healthy animal. “Keep free-choice hay in front of them all the time to keep their rumen working. We’re always putting extra grain in them to grow them but need to keep their digestive tract on focus. Even when we put them in the barn, there are feeders with hay for them,” he said. Another way that Rodgers keeps his cattle healthy and their digestive system in check is by feeding them Amaferm®. Amaferm is a precision prebiotic designed to enhance digestibility by amplifying the nutrient

supply for maximum performance. It is research-proven to increase intake, digestion and absorption. Rodgers uses the Sure Champ® Pack or other methods to make sure his calves benefit from the Amaferm advantage. He also includes the Vita Charge® Stress Tubs in all his runs. The Vita Charge Stress Tubs include Amaferm and MOS and help promote feed and water intake during times of stress and recovery. Once he’s ensured his cattle are healthy, eating and on a good plane of nutrition, the other priority for Rodgers is to make his calves look like show prospects, including having them halter broke and hair worked. “The one thing we flirt with being the hardest decision on them is we’re trying to get them sale ready and we’re trying to get them bloomy, yet at the same time we’ve got to get them broke and we want to get them Continued on page 34

Get your cattle off to the start!

RITE

Fall is in the air, can you feel it? Crisp and cool air, leaves all around and new calves in the barn. Not sure what to feed those new calves? We’ve got you covered.

Throttled Up: Our slogan for this feed has always been,“get them fat first!” and here's why: 1) Avoid walking into the show ring too green. 2) Provide some extra energy in their diets through the cold winter months with this high fat feed. 3) Put fat cover on them while temperatures are cool and they still want to eat. You’ll be ahead of the game with Throttled Up!

Cruiser: Formulated with Bioplex minerals and gut health products, already in the bag!

If you’re starting an earlier maturing steer project or breeding heifer project, you’re going to want a feed formulated more like a grower, containing lower energy and higher protein and fiber. Cruiser is your go-to in that scenario! Put them on this feed and don’t worry about them peaking too soon, they’ll maintain their fat level and grow, grow, grow.

Not sure what type or maturity of calf you’re feeding? Contact a Show-Rite cattle specialist for one-on-one feeding guidance. Mari Morris 936-215-4478 and Miles Toenyes 618-420-9413 JULY/AUGUST 2020

Dear Friend of the CJLA, 2020 marks 21 years since the inception of the California Junior Livestock Association. It began as a dream to unite kids who love to show livestock with adults and groups who wanted to provide show and educational experiences for them. Today the CJLA boasts an annual membership of over 350 members who compete in Steer, Heifer, Market Hog, Market Sheep, Market Goat, Wether Dam Ewe and Wether Dam Doe Divisions. They have the opportunity to exhibit at 30-plus sanctioned shows held throughout the state from January through December. From beginning level to the most advanced presentation, CJLA strives to offer positive experiences for everyone. It has provided a venue for our young members to showcase their passions and commitment to excellence in the show ring, in school, and in their daily lives. Our members love what they do. They love to raise and show livestock. From selecting a certain animal, setting goals, and working hard, to competing in show rings up and down the state, CJLA kids are up to the challenge. But it’s more than time in the ring — it is time with family, making friends, and building memories that will last a lifetime. The California Junior Livestock Association has become the cornerstone of the junior livestock scene in our state. Our focus is on providing members with opportunities for recognition as they set and attain new goals, expand their animal husbandry skills and industry knowledge, and compete with their cattle, sheep, hogs, and goats in competitive events. Every member is honored at the annual Award Ceremony, and the top exhibitors in each division are awarded prizes for their achievements. In addition to earning awards for exhibiting their animal projects, members can also enter other CJLA contests. The Weaver Leather Essay Contest and the Dave Spaulding Memorial Scholarship appeal to our youngest to oldest members. The CJLA continually strives to offer something for all our members and we are excited for the new events planned for this year, and into the future! Our upcoming Award Ceremonies, recognizing the achievements of our 2020 members, will be held February 13, 2021 at the Mid-State Fairgrounds in Paso Robles, CA. Cal Poly’s Western Bonanza Junior Livestock Show is also taking place this weekend at the fairgrounds and many of our members and their families will be attending both events. We are planning our Award Presentations at each show-ring during the day so all attendees can watch our members receiving their awards. In order to reach our goal of providing special awards to all our members, the CJLA relies completely on the generosity of those who share our belief in the future of our youth and the future of agriculture. CJLA members are the leaders and bright stars of tomorrow who use the skills they learn today in their future endeavors. Your sponsorship will help the CJLA give awards that can be used in our members’ future projects, education, and careers. Large or small, all contributions go directly back to our members and help to ensure the success of our award program. You can help us keep our vision alive through your support. Please read through the enclosed sponsor information. Several levels of support are offered and you can choose where you want your donation applied. To make a contribution to CJLA, please fill out and return the enclosed form or you may go to the CJLA website – www.cjlainfo.com and use our PayPal service. If you have any questions at all, please contact me directly at (408) 888-2503. The CJLA truly values your support, but more importantly, our junior members and their families appreciate it! We promise to put your contribution to good use. Thank you for your consideration of our request. Sincerely,

eidi Beljean HHeidi Beljean CJLA Chairman
