Fitting Tip From the Pros:
Find us on Facebook!
To make legs on black cattle a very deep black color, begin with an adhesive groomed leg. After the adhesive has dried, apply a coat of Sullivan's Ultra White Touch-Up. When dry, apply a coat of Sullivan's Brown Touch-Up and finish with a coat of Sullivan's Jet Black Touch-Up. This will give you a very deep, natural looking black color. This technique works especially well when taking pictures because it covers the gray color that often shows through on photographs. — Bob May

Fall is: shorter days, cooler temperatures, trees changing colors, leaves in piles on the ground, the urge to bake goodies and cook warm soups and stews, and preparing to SHOP!! “Shop”, you say? What does shopping have to do with this magazine? Well, I don’t mean shopping in stores, buying gifts, and preparing for the upcoming holidays. I mean SHOPPING for your new project animals!! Fall has always been my favorite time of year because of the anticipation it brings of searching for that next perfect animal – reading ads, making phone calls, traveling to ranches, attending sales, looking through pens and pastures, studying and comparing, and finally choosing the “right one.”
P.O. Box 41430 • San Jose, CA 95160 (408) 776-7611 • Fax (408) 776-9811 Publisher & Managing Editor: Heidi Beljean — (408) 888-2503 Email: pacshow@earthlink.net
As you read this editorial, there will be some who have already gone through the shopping process and have those projects in their pens at home. Others of you are still waiting to make your selections. Take advantage of the information that is out there – contact breeders and study sale catalogs, or go on-line and look at websites. Gather as much information as you can and you will find someone who has the animal you need.
Production Manager & Art Director: William Crump — (662) 257-1998 Email: pacificshowcase@gmail.com
Something else to think about when making a selection, is what you intend to do with your animal long term. Are you going to show at jackpots as much as possible, or is it your goal to have an animal that will be competitive at your county fair? It can be difficult to have one animal that will do well in both circumstances, so many times exhibitors will have animals they jackpot and then have animals they are preparing for that major market show at their fair. Having two sets of animals may not be a financially feasible option, but with good selection and good management, you can have the best of both worlds with the one you do choose. Remember that it is fun, educational, and rewarding, to do well at jackpots, but your income or return on your investment, comes at your county fair. Therefore, your main selection criteria should be about how that animal will turn out at the end.

If you have studied and done your research before making a purchase, you will have decided what is important to you in that selection. Don’t get discouraged when that selection goes through growth spurts or “ugly stages,” and you are wondering what in the heck you ever saw in that animal to begin with! If you have selected for correct structure and type, then what you saw as a baby, will be there at the end as a finished mature animal. And I cannot stress enough how important it is to have that correct structure. A minor problem as a baby will only get worse as time goes on, and more often than not, with all else being equal or close, structure will determine 1st place or 2nd place.

I also want to remind you not to forget about the breeder of your animal, or the person you purchased it from. They all spend a considerable amount of time raising animals for your selection and have a vested interest in how they turn out for you. Keep in contact with them throughout the time you have your project, give them progress reports and ask for advice, and send a picture and a thank you at the end. Appreciation and consideration go a long way, and next time you are in the market for a prospect, those breeders will look forward to helping you again. How awesome is that!

Jackpots and CJLA go together, so this brings me to my next editorial thought! The annual award banquet is only a few months away and it is amazing to me to realize that 2010 is our 11th year anniversary! It is still my greatest pleasure to be able to recognize and reward all CJLA members for their hard work and achievements. Of course, we rely so much on the generosity and support of those who donate and sponsor the many awards we give out. Without them, it would not be possible to do as much for so many. I know that everyone is budgeting and I am asking that you put the CJLA on that list of those who you will continue to support. If you are interested in donating to the CJLA, or would like to know more about the organization, please call me anytime at 408-888-2503. To join the CJLA for the upcoming year (2011), there are membership forms in this magazine, at the shows in the Sullivan Supply Trailer (a huge CJLA sponsor!), or you can contact us directly and we will get a form to you by mail, email, or fax.
Subscriptions: (Bulk mail - one year - $25; two years - $45.) (First class - one year - $35; two years $65.) For processing of new subscriptions - please allow 4 to 6 weeks. For address corrections, send current mailing label along with new address to Pacific Showcase.

Governor Schwarzenegger made a special visit to the State Fair on opening day this year with an extended tour of “The Farm,” the Jungle and Reptile Experience, the Counties Exhibits and “Days of the Dinosaur.”
“Your Passport to Adventure” Wraps up at California State Fair
In addition, the State Fair drew large crowds for big name acts like Fab Four, Eddie Money, Rick Springfield, Martina McBride, Village People, Foghat and “Weird Al” Yankovic. There were a plethora of specials and promotions that helped the Fair achieve a successful season. The promotions and discounts proved to be the most popular thing about the State Fair this year. With the multitude of advance gate discounts and reduced food prices we felt that we offered a great bargain and a niche price program for many visitors.
The California State Fair wrapped up its 157th year on Sunday, August 1, in traditional State Fair style – with the nightly fireworks finale, corn dogs and plenty of BIG FUN! Throughout its 19-day run, Fairgoers were encouraged to enjoy “An Adventure Waiting Inside” and take part in the affordable family fun. Despite the difficult economy, the State Fair managed to break some important records and milestones during its season. Before the 2010 California State Fair even started, advance online ticket sales soared to record levels thanks in part to the many discounts and package deals being offered. This year, more than one million dollars in online purchases were made- a 16% increase over the past year making it the highest ever! For the first time in 100 years, the Fair moved away from its traditional schedule which typically lasts through the Labor Day weekend, to an earlier start date in July. By doing so, families didn’t have to worry about children being back in school, and instead, could enjoy the new dates and new adventures offered by the Fair. On Tuesday, July 27, 73,363 people visited the Fair during Kids’ Day: a record number of guests for a weekday. “We’re thrilled with this year’s attendance,” said Norb Bartosik, CEO and General Manager of the California Exposition & State Fair. “With the transition to a new schedule, we didn’t know what to expect. But the numbers show that Californians came out in droves to support the Fair and for that we say thanks!” Fair officials saw a glimmer of change in a down

Basic Vaccination of Sheep and Goats By H.J. Hamlen, DVM, MS, DACVPM
ian will consider your herd or flock status (closed, open, frequent addition, trips to exhibitions), the disease prevalence in the area, and management. Vaccines are not a replacement for hygiene and management! Importantly, do not vaccinate a sick animal unless specifically told to do so by your veterinarian.
What is a vaccine? The term vaccine comes from the Latin word vacca (cow) because cowpox virus was the first organism used to protect people from the related, and deadly, smallpox virus. The vaccine has since been used to eradicate small pox from the planet! However, there are many diseases of people and animals that are still a threat and vaccines serve an important role in preventing or minimizing their affects.
Sheep and Goat Core Vaccines: CD-T - Yearly booster vaccination protects against the bacteria (and its toxin) Clostridium perfringens that causes bloody scours in young goats and lambs (Type C) and overeating disease in grain-fed lambs and goats (Type D). It also protects against Clostridium tetani, which causes tetanus, or “lock jaw”. Animals receiving high levels of concentrate may require booster vaccination several times a year.
Vaccines basically mimic infections by disease causing viruses and bacteria and stimulate the body to produce a protective immune response. Vaccines may be made from weakened, killed, or live microorganisms, or products produced by microorganisms such as toxins. The substance that is used to provoke an immune response is called an antigen. Antigens are usually combined with a substance, called an adjuvant, that enhances the immune response. Following vaccination, if the animal encounters the virus or bacteria under natural conditions they may be completely protected from developing the disease or develop a milder form. That’s the goal of vaccination – to prevent or minimize the disease.
Protocol: Follow manufacturer’s directions. Figure 1: Sheep generAfter the initial vaccination, repeat in 3-4 ally are given polyvalent weeks and then annually. One should vacClostridium vaccines. cinate pregnant ewes and does 2-4 weeks There are many excellent vaccines on the market, before lambing/kidding. Colostrum will and your veterinarian then provide passive immunity to lambs or extension agent will and kids protecting them for the first 50-60 recommend one. days of life. This protection is important to prevent disease caused by tetanus organisms that may enter the body through contamination of the umbilicus, during tail docking in lambs and disbudding in kids, as well as preventing tetanus after castration. First lambing ewes should be vaccinated two times in late pregnancy, 3 to 4 weeks apart, whereas, mature ewes only require one vaccine. Lambs and kids should be vaccinated at weaning and then again 3-4 weeks later, then annually. If the vaccination status of the dam is unknown, then kids and lambs should be vaccinated earlier (see summary chart).
Vaccines come in many forms: inactivated (killed), modified live (weakened or attenuated), live, and recombinant (genetically engineered vaccines containing pieces of the organism). Other forms include toxoids (inactivated toxic proteins produced by a microorganism) and anti-toxins (immune conferring antibodies directed at a toxin). Vaccines must be handled properly to assure that they will work. They are sensitive to sunlight, heat, and freezing. It is never advisable to mix vaccines together as the components may inactivate each other and cause reactions. Always follow manufacturer directions regarding dose, frequency, and route (under the skin or in the muscle) of administration. Make sure the vaccine is labeled for use in the species you are using it in – if it is not you need to consult a veterinarian about “off-label” use. To assure food safety, remember that all vaccines have meat and milk withdrawal times, and these are printed on the label.
Sheep and Goat Noncore Vaccines: Many of the vaccines on the market are polyvalent (i.e. contain antigens from multiple organisms). For the most part, they are effective against C. perfringens (types C and D) and C. tetani and some combination of other diseases. Other conditions may have monovalent vaccines (against one disease organism). Choice of vaccine(s) depends on the location of the herd or flock and specific health concerns. Listed below are several diseases of concern for goats and sheep. When choosing a vaccine(s), one should consider which, if any, of these are risks to a particular herd or flock. Your veterinarian is the best source of information regarding vaccination protocols.
Core vs Noncore vaccines A core vaccine is universally recommended for a certain species in a wide geographic area. Core vaccines are recommended because consequences of disease are severe, infection poses a substantial zoonotic potential (spread to people), disease prevalence is high, the organism is easily transmitted to others of its species, and or the vaccine is safe and efficacious. Noncore vaccinations are recommended for herds or flocks depending on their risk of contact with the disease-causing organism. Producers need to tailor their vaccine protocol to their facility and develop protocols for different production classes of animals.

Tetanus (Clostridium tetani) antitoxin – Tetanus antitoxin is more commonly used than CD antitoxin, and will protect an animal before surgery or delivery if previous vaccination is unknown. It is commonly used in kids prior to disbudding and castration if dam vaccination is unknown. Dosage is 150-250 units for kids and 400-750 units for adult goats.

If it is started because of disease presence, one initially vaccinates the Figure 3: Sheep and goats are susceptible entire herd, to tetanus, and vaccination against it is universally recommended. then new kids and unvaccinated new additions. Site for vaccination is inside the ear or under the tail. People handling the vaccine should be cautious, wear disposable gloves and dispose of contaminated vials and gloves carefully, as the vaccine can produce the disease in people.
Sheep Noncore Vaccines: Clostridium diseases – Although CD-T is universally recommended for all sheep, there are other Clostridium diseases of concern in sheep, and many times sheep are given polyvalent products that include C. novyi, C. sordelli, C. chavoei, and C. septicum in addition to CD-T.
Caseous lymphadenitis (CL) – The vaccine protects against a disease caused by the bacteria Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis that produces abscesses in lymph nodes, but it may not eliminate the disease. Abscesses may be reduced in number and severity.
Figure 4: Caseous lymphadentitis in sheep and goats is very difficult to eradicate from a premises once it is established. Vaccines may aid in controlling the severity and number of abscesses, with management and hygiene playing key roles.
Campylobacter fetus (also called Vibrio) –The vaccine protects against the bacteria that causes abortion in sheep.
Rabies – Recommended in herds and flocks living in areas where rabies is seen in wildlife (skunks, raccoons, coyotes, and foxes, or those traveling to events where vaccination is required).
Goat Noncore Vaccines:
Chlamydia psittici– For use in breeding stock only, the vaccine protects against the bacteria that causes enzootic abortion in sheep.
CD (Clostridiun perfringens types C and D) antitoxin – The antitoxin may be used in cases of failure of passive transfer of immunity from dam to newborn.

Getting a Bigger Piece of the Pie – Direct Marketing Beef & Beef Products
By Carol Albrecht
Meat is only legal for resale if it is USDA harvested and processed. Hmm, where is your nearest USDA harvest plant? Better put that on the list of things to find out also.
Once you have decided to direct market your beef, it is time to do some research. You can start on the internet with websites like EatWild.com or the Farm to Consumer Legal Defense Fund. But don’t spend all your time online. Head out and talk to those who are marketing directly to consumers and having some success. A good place to start might be your local farmer’s market. If your community does not have a thriving market with a beef producer or two, then head to your nearest urban area that does. Type the name of the city and farmer’s market into your search engine and you should come up with the market website. A quick email to the market manager can tell you if there are beef producers in the market. Another idea is to contact the producers listed on the Eat Wild Website. Please don’t skip this step. You can read hundreds of books and articles but nothing substitutes for actually talking with someone who is successful and running your ideas by them. If you do attend a market and the producer is busy, ask when you might call or come and visit his ranch. Most will be glad to spend some time with you. Once you have formulated your business plan and budget, be sure and take it back to the producers you originally talked with and run it by them. I often get the calls after there is a problem and I would have been glad to have taken a look at their plan in advance.
When you have completed a good bit of research, you should then begin a business plan with a detailed budget. In our last article we spoke of niche marketing, so this would be a good time to figure out yours. So what sort of beef are you going to sell? Grain fed, hand raised, grass fed, Kobe? Lots of this is going to depend on the type of cattle you have or plan to have and the land you have to raise them on. If you raise market steers for show, then an easy way to start is to raise an extra one or two. This will give you an idea of whether you like direct marketing and will help you work out some of the kinks as you go along. You already know how to raise steers on grain so you need only learn the marketing part. We actually started our direct marketing operation with our son’s backup steer and now direct market our entire calf crop as grass fed beef at a premium. Start slowly and build up using cash you have earned in order to avoid debt. It is the easiest and safest way to move forward. This is probably a good time to talk about facilities and land as beef cattle do need those. All of the most profitable grass finished beef producers I know have one thing in common; they don’t own any land. Yep, you read that right. These people all lease their land. One guy I know leases his land and his cattle. He uses his profits to buy and restore rental homes. He owns his pickup and some electric fence. Really, when you think about it, this is a very enviable position. Think of the flexibility. Decide you want to stop producing beef and be a welder? You can walk away and do that. Want to raise more steers? Lease more grass. Want to raise less? Give up some leases. Need a different type of grass or don’t like the neighbors? You get the idea. Get some help from a person well versed in leases so that your leases are well done and have enough time for you or the other person to cancel so you don’t get caught in the middle of a production cycle.
While you are at the farmer’s market, do some research into what beef is going for direct to the consumer in your area. Just because XYZ ranch lists their steaks online for $22 a pound or sells them for that at the San Francisco Farmer’s Market does not mean you will get that price in your market. Every area is different. If you live in an area that is far away from consumers who are willing and interested in buying, then you may need to use different methods than someone who is twenty miles away from a medium sized city. (Keep reading, we will discuss long distance marketing in future articles.)
Another important thing to consider is your breed of cattle. Some breeds aren’t well suited to grass or take a very long time to finish. These breeds might be better suited to grain feeding or pasture with grain supplementation. You also might have to consider changing breeds or bringing in feeders. When you bring in feeders it is a good idea to make sure they fit your raising system. If you are advertising your beef as organic, then you must buy organic feeder cattle. If you are advertising that you do not use synthetic wormers and you purchase feeders that are loaded with worms, you are in trouble. If you are already raising show steers, you might talk with the rancher you buy your steers from and see if the non-show quality calves are available at market price.
In addition to internet research you might want to read a few good books on the subject. Joel Salatin’s Salad Bar Beef comes to mind as well as Alan Nation’s Direct Marketing of Meat and Milk Products. Speaking of Alan Nation, he has an excellent monthly newspaper that has the most current information on the direct marketing of meat products entitled The Stockman Grass Farmer. This is a great read and always entertaining. Attending a grazing academy or the Ranching for Profit School are also excellent investments. In as short as a day or as long as a week, a school can teach you the basics quite quickly. Another important area of research is in learning regulations and rules regarding how meat is sold. I have lost count of how many new producers have called me in a panic because they did their budget figures based on hanging weight and just figured out that that is not the amount of meat you get back… I also get lots of calls from people who had their meat harvested by the local on-farm butcher and just now found out it is not legal for resale. october/november 2010
In what form will your beef be sold? Most producers market beef in wholes, halves and/or by the cut. Because you are paid all at 20
once, and just after harvest for the whole or half you don’t have the cost of storing that beef and then selling it so you can usually charge less for wholes and halves. (Taking a deposit for a large purchase such as a whole or half is good business, check out producers websites and see how they have their whole and half beef sales structured.) For cuts of meat, you will need storage and transportation and will have lots of handling to do, so the price will be much higher. Other products to consider include Jerky, snack sticks, pet food, pet treats, leather goods, all ground beef and many others. We make an excellent return on our cull cows by having them ground and selling the grassfed ground beef. We find there is a large market for ground beef in natural food stores and direct to consumers. There really are so many possibilities and a bit of research and some long talks with successful producers will have you well on your way.

"Sittin' Round the Showbox"
with Celeste Settrini
Who are you? Where did you come from? What are you doing here?
whole other world of folks out there that are interested in what WE, as livestock producers, have to say. It’s become quite simpleI share my journey and as we get to know each other through PS, you too will learn how to share your journey while hopefully taking away a tidbit of something to add to your story that can assist in perhaps making it a bit more flavorful. I have come to realize that is our duty as livestock producers to share these journeys, it is a disservice to our industry if we do not. My vision for this column is to open your eyes to a whole other world of information that you might not be in touch with. You see I have had the unique opportunity to meet some fantastic men and women throughout the United States and from them I have come to learn so much, so why not share it with someone. What better folks to share it with than the people I feel close to the most, my livestock family.
About a month ago, Heidi called and asked if I would be interested in doing a column for Pacific Showcasemy immediate thought? A dream comes true! For many of you who read PS, you may not know me but hopefully as we work towards creating this column you will come to enjoy what I have to say. I am interested in what you would like to read, special interest stories, legislation affecting livestock and property, features on great advocates within our industry, livestock ethics, you name it we can write about it while having fun and sharing my own experiences and educating you on how to do the same.
I encourage you to send me your ideas, comments and tips as we start this adventure. I am thrilled to be associated with PS and with the great team Heidi has in place. I am over the top excited for the opportunity and eager to share my thoughts with each and every one of you because you see as I mentioned earlier it is just like coming home. Farm and Ranch families are the best there is, I truly believe that there is no better. Through our journey, we will learn not only about issues and current topics along with some of my thoughts, hopefully I will be able to teach you to start the conversation on agriculture, empowering you to share your journey at every opportunity that comes available and become well educated on a full range of topics so that you can go out and celebrate our industry.
It all began back in the late 80’s, I was a student at Cal Poly and become instant friends with Miss Beljean. I showed cattle competitively for many years, was a national officer of the American Junior Hereford Association and was very involved in my local 4-H group. My love for cattle was evident as I showed for Cal Poly, was on the feeder calf enterprise and show projects and became a “show jock” for ranches throughout California. Upon graduation, I moved back to Salinas where I became a produce broker while continuing to work with my family on our commercial cow calf operation. However over the years, I missed the junior programs, livestock shows and most of all the people. So when Heidi asked me to be a feature writer for your magazine, it was very easy to say yes. It was kinda like coming home.
To get us started I think I would like to share the 15 components of the Pyramid of Success , created by John Wooden, someone whom I have come to admire, respect and learn from. Since there are 15 components each issue, we will take a component and expand about it and how it relates to you and your show projects. What are these 15 components?
In the past year, I have come to realize that it is so very important for me to “share my journey” with anyone interested in listening. Through numerous speaking engagements, magazine features, television and radio interviews I have experienced a

Livestock Producers Fear GIPSA Rule’s Vagueness and Unintended Consequences FORT COLLINS (Aug. 27, 2010) - Beef and pork producers rallied against USDA’s Grain Inspection, Packers and Stockyards Administration’s (GIPSA) proposed federal rule on the buying and selling of livestock at a public meeting held in Fort Collins, Colo., Aug. 27. The meeting on competition in the livestock industry was hosted by USDA and Department of Justice.
ing more than 20 states attended the meeting to voice their opposition to the GIPSA rule, expressing the negative effect it could have on their operations. “As written, the GIPSA rule would limit my ability to sell hogs,” said NPPC President Sam Carney, a producer from Adair, Iowa. “It’s a solution in search of a problem. The markets work, and we don’t need the government trying to ‘fix’ it. The GIPSA rule is overly broad and very vague. It would inject uncertainty into the market, stifle innovation and lead to less not more competition in the livestock industry.”
Producers voiced concerns to USDA Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack about the unintended consequences of the proposed rule. Robbie LeValley, president of the Colorado Cattlemen’s Association; a cattle producer; and a co-owner of Homestead Meats, a family owned company marketing beef locally, is worried that the proposed rule could have a negative impact on her family business.
To learn more about the GIPSA rule, and how you can submit comments and voice your opinion, please visit www.nppc.org
“Our innovation and our willingness to do direct marketing has basically now labeled us a packer and under the proposed rule, as I read it, now limits our marketing options – meaning not being able to sell to other packers,” she said. “While some say that is not the intent of the rule, the vagueness of the language makes it very possible.”
GIPSA’s Proposed Rule on Buying and Selling Livestock Is a Disaster for Farmers, Consumers and Rural America The rule is a breathtaking bureaucratic overreach that will ... • Limit farmers’ ability to sell animals. • Dictate the terms of contracts. • Make it harder to get farm financing. • Raise consumer prices and reduce choices. • Stifle innovation and eliminate rural jobs.
The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association and the National Pork Producers Council (NPPC) held a media briefing on Aug. 26 regarding the proposed rule. Pork and beef producers representContinued from page 15
Summary of Basic Vaccination Protocol for Sheep
Footrot – The vaccine does not prevent the disease but combined with facility hygiene and routine foot trimming and/or foot baths can reduce the occurrence of lameness. Vaccine should be administered every three to six months especially in preparation for the rainy season.
Pregnant Ewes
Brucella ovis – Used in breeding rams to protect against the bacteria that causes ram epididymitis. Summary of Basic Vaccination Protocol for Goats Pregnant Does
CD-T approximately 30 days before due date
Kids
If kid is from immunized dam – CD-T at 1-2 months of age, repeat 3-4 weeks later If kid is from non-immunized dam- CD-T at 1- 3 weeks of age and repeat in 3-4 weeks. May need tetanus anti-toxin at time of disbudding/castration
Bucks and Yearlings
Vaccinate with CD-T at same time as pregnant does
Lambs
Lambs from immunized dams should be given Clostridial vaccination (see above) at 1-2 months of age, with repeat vaccination 3-4 weeks later. Lambs from dams with unclear immunization status should be vaccinated for Clostridium species at 1-3 weeks of age, with repeat vaccination twice at 3-4 week intervals.
Rams and Yearlings
Vaccinate for Clostridium diseases at the same time as ewes.
Conclusion: This article discusses basic vaccine protocols for sheep and goats, consult your veterinarian if you are having specific disease issues to see if there are vaccines (on or off-label) or management changes that would help control the condition.
Figure 5: Soremouth is a viral disease. Vaccination should only be given when the disease is present in a herd or flock as the vaccine contains a live, infective virus. People may contract soremouth if animals and vaccine is not handled appropriately.
october/november 2010
Clostridium species (minimally CD-T but may include C. novyi, C. sordelli, C. chauvoei, and C. septicum or others as indicated) approximately 30 days before lambing.
In future issues we will discuss core and noncore vaccinations of beef cattle and swine. By Kristi Mattes
latest: Agriculture Chemistry. All these courses are UC approved for college entrance.
In last issue's article, I told you that the FFA was more than just “Cows and Plows”. The first line of the FFA motto focuses on the basis of the organization — the classroom — hence the idea of “Learning to Do”.
Other UC approved courses that your local Agriculture department might be offering are Floral Design, which fills the visual and performing arts requirement, and Agriculture Government and Economics, filling the senior social science requirement.
The classroom has undergone many changes over the past 82 years. When we started, it was an organization for young farm boys to come together and learn about current farming trends. Agriculture was an elective course for those students who were interested in graduating from high school and returning to the family farm. These courses were called vocational courses because they were hands on classes preparing you for a career upon graduation. Today’s agriculture bears little resemblance to those classes of old, except that we continue to foster the handson aspect of teaching. Those courses, which were once filled with students who had little or no desire to go to college or work anywhere but the family farm, are now filled with college bound individuals because there is no farm to go to. In addition to the fact that only 2% of the population is in agricultural production, today’s student realizes that even if you have a farm to go to, it requires a person with a college degree to manage it.
There are a variety of other courses designed and offered in many departments across the state that fulfill graduation requirements as well as college entrance requirements. Although the face of agriculture has changed in the public school system from Vocational Agriculture to Agriculture Education, the thing that hasn’t changed is our system of delivering educational material, which is and always will be hands-on and project based. That last part of my job as an educator in Agriculture, and the most fulfilling, is the fact that we are the only program that offers leadership as a regular part of our classroom instruction. Every student who enrolls in an agriculture education course is automatically a member of the FFA organization and all that it offers. Giving each student the tools they will need for their chosen field of endeavor, and teaching them how to become a productive citizen as well…well, it doesn’t get any better than that.
For those of us who have roots in the FFA, we remember the days of the vocational agriculture courses called Ag Science 1, 2 and 3 et cetera. Today’s agriculture includes such courses as Agriculture Biology, Agriculture Earth and Physical Science, and one of the
What more could a student and or parent ask for in a program? Stay tuned until next time when we talk about the next phase, "Doing to Learn”.

"Victory Lane" stood 2nd to the $50,000 world record selling Berkshire boar "Legend" as well as sharing the same sire, IASU9 Fast Lane. We knew this boar needed to come back to California and be used as a herd boar. “Victory Lane” is a big footed, heavy boned boar that still is wide in his skeleton but still has the "look" of a showpig sire. Call for semen pricing.

More than 110 individuals from 23 states participated in this event, hosted by the National Junior Hereford Association (NJHA). Celeste Settrini, Salinas, Calif., kicked off the conference with her message about not being afraid to be yourself and the importance of becoming an agricultural advocate. Currently serving as California Women for Agriculture president, Celeste grew up on the family Hereford ranch near Salinas and was very active in the NJHA as a youth.

Alltech and Feed Industry Partner to “Give Kids a Chance” [Lexington, KENTUCKY] – “Progress occurs when courageous, skillful leaders seize the opportunity to change things for the better,” said former President Harry S. Truman. It is in that spirit that the global agriculture community joined Alltech in a philanthropic initiative to bring thousands of children to the largest sporting event in the United States in 2010, the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games, for an educational experience of a lifetime. The “Giving Kids a Chance” program allowed 62,000 children to experience a once in a lifetime opportunity to be at an event of this scope. While at the Kentucky Horse Park, students had a chance to not only see world class competitions, but to also visit several interactive locations within the Alltech Experience Pavilion that showcase what agriculture must do to feed an expected 9.3 billion people in 2050.
“People have lost sight of what agriculture has become, but more importantly, what agriculture could be,” said Lyons. “I salute those who stand next to us to insure that we are protecting our future. We believe in the value of education. It is through education that we can accentuate the positives of our industry, of which there are many.”
The brainchild of Alltech president, Dr. Pearse Lyons, the “Giving Kids a Chance” program has engaged Alltech’s customers from around the world to secure their future and educate consumers how modern agriculture can provide safe and nutritious food at an affordable price. As more and more people migrate towards city living, the connection to the farm has become a distant memory. 126 companies worldwide stepped up to “give kids a chance” six of these companies were from California: A.L. Gilbert, Best Ag, J.D. Heiskell, Pine Creek Nutrition, Nutrius, and Western Milling.
Students arrived at the Games and had a guided tour where they saw the following exhibits within the Alltech Experience Pavilion: Feeding the World: How we will feed the 9.3 billion people in 2050.
•
ACE Principle: Producing products that are safe for the animal, the consumer, and the environment.
•
The Future of Farming: What will the farm look like in 2050?
•
Life Sciences: How will nutrigenomics change the way we look at human medicine?
Additionally, they attended classes to learn about equine nutrition, learned about foreign cultures when they visited the French Pavilion, home of the 2014 Games, and interacted with attendees the world over. They also received recognition at the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games through a variety of marketing and advertising activities.
Participants agreed to a $10,000 commitment that benefited area high school and university students from across the United States.
