The theme of the conclave this time is Safe Packaging: New Regulatory Landscape. As we all know, FSSAI has released the draft version of the ‘Food Safety and Standards (Packaging) Regulation, 2018’. Once the new regulations take effect, they are expected to entail significant changes in the food and beverage packaging supply chain. The conclave aims to unpack the implications of the forthcoming new regulations. Labels features heavily in this edition of The Packman. Read our feature on Kwality Offset Printers which entered the world of digital label printing about a year-and-a-half ago and has achieved 12% increase in its digital volume since its entry into this segment. Canon and Gallus have introduced digital label presses Océ LabelStream 4000 and Smartfire respectively. The latest addition of the Océ LabelStream 4000 to its production printing portfolio underlines the Canon and Océ strategy to invest in growing industrial printing segments. With the Smartfire, Gallus focuses on new target groups who are looking for a smart entry into digital label printing. All these and other interesting stories in this issue which we hope you will enjoy reading. See you at PackPlus 2018, Hall 7A Stand 179.

Tetra Pak rejuvenates drinking yoghurt with inclusion of big fruit pieces
T
hanks to its expertise in ambient yoghurt processing, particle heating and a new Tetra Top system Tetra Pak has announced that it has helped Yili, a leading Chinese dairy manufacturer, to produce the world’s first ambient drinking yoghurt with large fruit and cereal pieces.
Yili launched the breakthrough product in Tetra Top 200 ml with large re-sealable screw caps. It gained immediate popularity, strengthening the leadership position of the company in the fast-growing ambient yoghurt category. Charles Brand, executive vice president, product management and commercial operations at Tetra Pak said, “We are pleased to be able to support our customer deliver a premium product in a growing category. This has been made possible by our expertise in the entire processing and packaging process: our ambient yoghurt processing capability, the know-how of heating large food particles, and our ability to customize the packaging system.
“The new Tetra Pak TT/3 AD filling system has been designed to allow the particles to pass through seamlessly, and the new Tetra Top package uses a large re-sealable opening that makes it easy for consumers to drink the yoghurt with large fruit pieces.” Including large fruit pieces within an ambient beverage product is a challenging process. The heating of the product must be done carefully to ensure that the fruit pieces are not damaged or broken-down during the process, and the filling and packaging need to ensure even distribution of the fruit particles, keeping the quality and integrity of the final product. The global market for ambient drinking yoghurt is around 12.5 billion packages today, with quick expansion from China to South East Asia and the Middle East. The addition of large fruit pieces and cereal grains will further increase consumer interest with more premium products. z

ne of India’s largest manufacturers and exporters of beverages – Rasna International wanted an absolutely alluring packaging for its fruit powder concentrate. With this straight-forward brief, Rasna tasked Uflex – a company with whom it has had an association for over two decades, to come up with a unique packaging solution. What Uflex in turn came up with is all set to take the brand to the next level of customer delight. An all new spouted profile stand-up pouch with side handle carrying Rasna fruit powder concentrate has pleasantly stirred up the retail shelves not only in India but overseas as well.

4-tier profiled packaging Explaining about the metamorphosed packaging, Arun Anand, executive vice president marketing at Uflex Packaging, said, “Fruit powder concentrate is extremely hygroscopic. The powder has to be immaculately protected from moisture. Rasna wanted something very unique, enunciating strong customer pull at the point-ofsale (POS). We created a 4-tier profiled packaging structure comprising polyester, aluminum foil, polyester and polyethylene. While the foil imparts perfect barrier to water vapor and oxygen, we have incorporated two layers of polyester in the structure to lend sturdiness to the pouch carrying 750 grams of powder concentrate ensuring that the side handle does not snap while holding the pack. z Recyclable and high barrier films
Max Speciality Films inaugurates fifth BOPP line
M
ax Speciality Films, one of India’s leading manufacturers of BOPP packaging films launched its fifth BOPP films manufacturing line (Line 5) on 9 May 2018, significantly increasing its capacity from 46.35 KTPA to 80.85 KTPA. The new line was launched at a special inaugural ceremony by Manpreet Singh Badal, finance minister, Government of Punjab.
MSFL’s new line is designed to meet trends for recyclability, ultra high barrier and print receptivity. The line will be able to manufacture thicker films with advanced properties making it environment-friendly since it is conducive to recycling and reducing the usage of plastic per pack. The launch of Line 5 is the second significant growth initiative undertaken by Max Ventures and Industries Limited, through MSFL, within the last one year as part of its ongoing effort to rejuvenate the manufacturing business. In February 2017, the company had brought in Japan’s Toppan Printing, as a strategic investor and partner in MSFL to share their expertise in managing a global speciality films business, as well as, leveraging their global sales network. As part of the partnership, Toppan had invested approximately Rs 198.78 crore, through a combination of primary and secondary share issuance for 49% equity share in MSFL. Sahil Vachani, managing director and CEO, MaxVIL said, “At MaxVIL, it has been our consistent endeavour to reinvigorate the manufacturing business, especially against the backdrop of the government’s Make in India thrust, and help differentiate it through strategic innovation in an increasingly crowded and competitive market. z Elongating shelf life of flowers
Flowers world-over are blooming in Flexfresh by Uflex
F
lexfresh, the special patented film that Uflex has developed comprising a proprietary polymeric formula elongating the shelf life of flowers is serving to be a boon for flower companies across the globe. Flexfresh works on the principle of Active Modified Atmospheric Packaging (AMAP) and happens to be the first ever film for packing fresh produce that is bio-degradable by composting and complies with all international regulations for overall migration (EC 1935/2004), reach compliance (EC 1907/2006) and qualifies for biodegradation under DIN EN 13432 (2000-12). The packaging can be industrially composted within 180 days.
Flexfresh works in conjunction with Fast Respiration Meter and Laser Perforation system supplied by Perfotec BV of The Netherlands. While the respiration meter ascertains, the respiration rate of the flowers, the laser system uses this information to adapt the permeability of the polymeric film with the help of perforation matrix. Waterless Internet Flower Packaging is becoming increasingly popular among global flower companies for the myriad benefits that it brings to the table. Explaining the benefits and sustainability aspects of the award winning Waterless Internet Flower Packaging, Siva Shankaran vice president, Flexfresh at Uflex says,“The special proprietary polymeric substrate is the first biodegradable (by composting) film that maintains the hydration of flowers during transpiration (evaporation causing loss of moisture during respiration) thus creating a closed loop system. Flowers are put to slow respiration mode by reducing the oxygen availability preventing excess oxidation and dehydration. The film keeps the flowers breathing in hydrated oxygen

Flexfresh is serving to be a boon for flower companies across the globe and releases excess humidity keeping them touch dry. The flowers thus can go without water for a significant number of days as the humidity is fed back in to the masthey continue to breathe in the modified atmosphere.” This solution enables to hold flowers intact at the destination anywhere between 10-15 days as per the supply chain requirements against the normal shelf-life of 4-5 days offered by conventional packaging. This in turn enables florists and retailers to plan and store large inventory for festive rush. This development is a major shot in the arm for e-commerce companies and retailers bringing enormous savings. This packaging solution completely alleviates the use of millions of gallons of water from the flower supply chain currently used thereby making it one of the most sustainable packaging solutions. “One of the significant savings that accrues is the fact that nearly 2.7 times more material can be carried per truck, since water is completely eliminated if the transportation is done from grower to the retailer using sea freight. Similar savings are also possible while transportation is done from auction
house to retailers. To address the market requirements, Uflex and Perfotec offer solutions both for e-commerce/retail packaging (through flow wrap packing) and bulk liners for sea freighting of flowers from grower to the market,” says Shankaran. Since the freshness of the fresh cut flower is indicated by its water content, with least weight loss and lower oxidation, the flowers look much fresher and more appealing to the consumers. The overall consumer complaints have actually reduced by 90% regarding freshness of the flowers. These benefits accrue to the consumersin terms of costs with freshest flowers having longer vase life enhancing the overall value proposition. This is where Flexfresh does the trick. Further, the liner bags made of translucent film of special patented polymeric composition allow visibility to the brands of the florists. “Particularly noteworthy is the fact that it is also possible to bring flowers straight from harvest to market by economic sea freight. This results in significant carbon footprint reduction and also enables longer storage between 30-40 days from the time of harvest,” concludes Shankaran. z

z ViewAXIS Tera
A.T.E. launches full print repeat web viewing system
A
Pranay Mathur
.T.E. has launched the first of its kind, ViewAXIS Tera full print repeat web viewing system for superior process monitoring. ViewAXIS Tera with line scan camera captures high-resolution images which are then visualised on 55-inch 4K monitor and for operation on 22-inch touch monitor. This is the first opportunity where a printer can see 100% of the web width and full repeat, on a single monitor at production speed.
With deep domain knowledge built over three decades in the print and packaging field, A.T.E. is known as a reliable source of quality products. A.T.E. has developed customized solutions for demanding and complex printing applications. ViewAXIS Tera is fully developed by the in-house hardware and software team. During the production run, an operator constantly checks for print quality by visually inspecting the print web. However, at higher web speeds, it is impossible

for an operator to spot printing errors in real time with naked eyes. Conventional web videos allow the operator to view a stationary image only of a section of the printed substrate. Until now the only way to monitor the full width of the print web was to use a stroboscope. However, when used for an extended duration, the constant flicker of the stroboscope can strain the eyes. In today’s competitive and quality conscious environment, precise web viewing is no longer a luxury, but a pre-requisite for printers. With ever-escalating demands for a superior print quality and reduced material wastage, converters need a system for 100% print monitoring. “For rotogravure printers either there is an entry-level web video or a 100% print inspection system. Full repeat web viewing system, which could monitor full width of the web in real-time was a need for many years, in the Indian market. The 55-inch 4K monitor displaying images of 50+ megapixels resolution results in ‘near-print quality’ visualization. We are proud to present this made-in-India smart imaging technology-

driven product – ViewAXIS Tera,” said Anand Mehta, vice president – print and packaging equipment. The ViewAXIS Tera was an idea given by a few printers and OEMs. They said, “Can we have an intermediate system which in stage 2 can be upgraded to a 100% print inspection system?” The advantage of doing this are two-fold, first operators get to learn to identify the defects on a full print repeat monitoring system and second is the staggered investment for the business. ViewAXIS Tera is bundled with features such as instant error identification, better image control, and precise web monitoring. Split screen feature aids in the viewing of traffic lights on both edges simultaneously. This system can be used for any type of roll to roll printing applications and for various packaging substrate. A.T.E. believes that ViewAXIS Tera will scale new heights and foster printers and converters with a competitive edge through the direct impact it has on cost saving, waste reduction, and improved efficiency, thus leading to increased sales and profitability. z

z OHIO for high quality results
Hybrid engraving – printers love it
E
lectromechanical engraving (EME) is known for its consistency and repeatability. However, traditionally it suffers from intrinsic jagged edges limiting linework sharpness. No more . . .
The hybrid engraving system smooths edges and improves clarity with no effect on printing. The cell shape is identical between both types. Only the edge cells are shifted to produce sharp lines. This same, known, cell means no press, ink or blade adjustments for the printer. Let the cylinders roll! Orient Press commissioned a new OHIO Prism with the hybrid engraving system in fourth quarter of 2016 at their flexible packaging factory in Thane. The results have been favorable. “We have seen improved results using hybrid engraving. Printed quality of the text is excellent,” said RR. Maheshwari, executive director of Orient. “The change to hybrid created no trouble for us with cylinder printing and customers see the difference in quality.” The OHIO hybrid engraving system is making itself known not just to engraving companies but also printers around the world.
Hybrid talking points
• Density and sharpness: Typically there is a compromise with EME. A fine screen is needed for the key cylinder for LW sharpness, but then the print density is compromised due to the small cells. Hybrid allows for both a coarse screen and sharp edges problem solved. It also engraves faster with a coarser screen. • No press delays: Hybrid retains the known ink transfer characteristics and consistency of standard EME. It is plug-and-play for printers, no adjustments needed. • Process simplification: CT and LW in a single pass. There is no reason to

separate the artwork into CT and LW and then over-engrave the two since hybrid engraves them both in a single pass. • Accurate artwork reproduction: Hybrid analyzes the data before it creates the cells, so line and text weight is maintained. This review is performed on-the-fly during engraving and requires no external processing. • Shifts tones too: Hybrid even shifts half-tone cells to more accurately reproduce the original artwork. A real benefit in the world of ever complex THE PACKMAN | JUL-AUG 2018

Flexibles packaging. Text occurring as a tone can even have the edges boosted to increase sharpness while still smoothing the edge. (See Figure 5). • Productivity: Two to four times faster than tranScribe. Even a 70 line/cm screen produces sharp LW. • Broad range: While hybrid is normally thought of for standard packaging and cell depths of 60 microns, Hybrid can
also be used for coarse screens and high-volume applications. Cell depths greater than 100 microns are within the range of hybrid. • Second generation solution: OHIO released the patented tranScribe (TS) system in 1996 as a first attempt to improve LW quality. It was successful in some respects, but created other complexities. TS, like Hell’s Extreme,
creates unique cells through a series of multiple scratches. Unfortunately, these scratches formed a complex 3D cell shape with problematic ink release making life hard for the printer. ith encouraging response from the market already, Uflex’s aseptic liquid packaging, ASEPTO, will test waters for its holographic applications in aseptic liquid packaging by participating in Propak China exhibition from 11–13 July 2018 in Shanghai. ASEPTO will be on exhibit at Hall N1 Stand 1NO1.
Talking about the potential that the brand beholds, Ashwani Kumar Sharma, president and CEO of new business initiatives, Uflex, said, “This show, considered to be the carnival of processing and packaging technology industry will help us showcase ASEPTO’s holographic excellence in the untapped Chinese packaging market. We want to make a dent in the market by reaping the first-mover advantage.” ASEPTO is uniquely positioned and has all the capabilities for strengthening the market share of beverage manufacturers around the world, especially large markets like China. Holography has not yet been explored by the Chinese. “Our dynamic range of holographic packs, which is our USP, has the ability to grab a substantial market share in this segment,” Sharma added. The Chinese premium aseptic carton segment is growing at an accelerated pace, which several food companies intend to penetrate into by exporting their products in metalized packs. Here, ASEPTO has a clear strategic advantage to establish itself as the front-running specialized retail packaging solution for beverage companies. The brand with its unique UHT metalized/ holography packs happens to be the perfect and preferred choice in the significant

Ashwani Kumar Sharma, president and CEO of new business initiatives, Uflex 6-layer aseptic packaging market of China. As a matter of fact, Chinese consumers are increasingly looking for a premium appearance for their brands. “This is where ASEPTO perfectly fits in. ASEPTO Spark and ASEPTO Premium are the two variants with variety of holographic,multi-lens,foil stamping and embossing effects on the packs. While there may be choices in the market but ASEPTO scores way high on the distinction parameter,” noted Sharma.
Holographic metalized packs Metalized packages are not being sold by any aseptic packaging supplier locally in China, and only a couple of Chinese companies apart from an international brand are supplying metalized packaging materi-
al. In China portion packs and family packs with volumetric range from 200 ml to 1000 ml are quite popular. However, that is not holographic packaging. While ASEPTO by Uflex offers holographic packs, it is entering the Chinese market and will supply the above mentioned ranges as printed and holographic packs. In the context of market size, some Oceanian companies export almost 200 million metalized packs per annum to China. This outlines the market potential that India could capitalize upon. Hence, the introduction of an Indian brand providing holographic metalized packs will offer a greater degree of value-addition and protection to customers as compared to players who are presently not offering such
Monocarton premium packs. Consumers would cherish the high perceived value of the premium packs. The value proposition for retailers will be no less enticing either. Holographic packs will provide outstanding shelf performance to attract quality-focused consumers – leading to higher sales volumes thereby driving profitability. Furthermore, holography as a feature only available through ASEPTO packs – is not restricted to just one kind of design; it actually opens up a plethora of options for retail beverage companies to choose artworks of their choice that best describe their product’s proposition to customers and further enhance the look and feel at the point-of-sale. Therefore, ASEPTO offers a compelling USP for beverage manufacturers dealing in dairy, juices and distilled beverages allowing them to evolve all new product lines/brands by bringing about startling and strategic changes in their packaging.

It has several significant features such as advanced integration with PLC, lesser electronic parts, better human interfacing making it operator friendly in addition to delivering highest production speed than any other comparable machines. The machine is low on maintenance which is a big advantage for the company’s clients as it will bring down the total cost of ownership. In this category, most of the machines generally process 7,500 packs per hour unlike the machine by Uflex that has a capacity of processing 7,800 packs per hour. z

engaluru-headquartered ITWWintek Labels has become the first label printer in India to install the Gallus Labelmaster 440 flexo press. With 12 printing units, the newly installed press has a diecutting unit with cold foil and rotary screen capabilities. The press is installed at the company’s Bengaluru plant. ITW has another plant in Rudrapur, Uttarakhand. In addition to the Labelmaster, ITW has also installed brand new slitter rewinder inspection machines at its Bengaluru plant.
The Gallus Labelmaster was first demonstrated at Gallus Innovation Days 2016 prior to its official launch at Labelexpo Europe in September 2017. Gallus Labelmaster comes in several modular variants and offers less complexity and can hit speed up to 200 metres per minute. With newer tech-
nologies and a more advanced and wider printing platform along with a combination of various printing processes, the Labelmaster will enable Wintek to become even more competitive in the market since bigger labels and longer runs can be run more productively and cost-effectively on this press. Because of the Labelmaster’s higher level of automation and flexibility in the printing process, there is also the prospect of fur-
ther exploring the shrinkwrap label and inmould label markets by Wintek. Wintek’s Bengaluru plant has five label press while Rudrapur plant has two. Marks Emballage signs up for two Gallus Labelmasters Pranay Mathur
M
arks Emballage in Baddi has earned the unique distinction of being the first Indian label printing company to invest in two Gallus Labelmaster flexo presses in a single order, as part of its new plant expansion with a total planned investment of 5 million euros. The acquisition sets the stage for Marks to work in more productive and path-breaking ways, while broadening its footprint in high-growth market segments. The print house expects the huge capital investment to enhance its capacities and capabilities in the label industry.
Commenting on what is one of the largest deals in the Indian label printing industry in recent times, Aaditya Kashyap, managing director of Marks, says, “This is a future-ready investment. In a 3000-crore label market, even a 15% share translates to about 450 crores worth labeling jobs. Any printing firm with solid infrastructure and excellent production capacity can take a shot at this untapped potential that is up for grabs. The Gallus Labelmaster gives us incredible power to effectively align our business goals with the market opportunity.” Gallus Labelmaster is available in three configurations – the basic Labelmaster, Labelmaster Plus, and Labelmaster Advanced. Marks Emballage is buying the Plus and Advanced versions, with 8- and 10-color combinations, to be installed at its new and second plant in Baddi. Founded in 2013 by Kashyap, a young and dynamic entrepreneur from a successful pharma business family, Marks Emballage has made giant

strides to evolve into a full-fledged printing facility specializing in customized labeling solutions for reputed pharma companies. “Excellence is a tradition at Marks. To stay on top of our game, we need best-inclass equipment. The Labelmaster fits the bill immaculately. Short setup times, high level of automation, substrate and configuration flexibility, lightweight aluminum printing cylinders to facilitate quick job changes, finest print quality at any speed level... just the press we were waiting for,” says Kashyap. “Even at high speeds, the Gallus Labelmaster produces premium print quality with high-end finishing, as the printed image is always in the register. At all times, an optimized ink chamber facilitates optimal ink transfer to anilox rollers with minimal splashing and foaming. Printing
units can be changed quickly to accommodate a wide range of substrates. A locking system positions the printing units on the base unit with absolute precision to ensure 100% register accuracy across the substrate,” adds Pravin Mahajan, AGM – equipment sales of Gallus. Samir Patkar, regional sales head of Gallus Asia, says, “The Labelmaster is built to shorten job-changeover times and minimize material waste, thereby addressing the main challenges that cut into the profits of label printers. The press is specially focused on increasing overall equipment effectiveness (OEE). A short web path of 1.4 meters between two print units shaves wastage significantly, and a speed of 200 m/min makes the Labelmaster the fastest label printing press from the Gallus portfolio.” THE PACKMAN | JUL-AUG 2018

Labels Chandrakant Gadhia, vice president, operations of Marks Emballage, says, “What really tipped the scales in favour of the Labelmaster is the comfort in the knowledge that a competent Gallus team would be around 24 x 7 for technical support. Other features are equally appealing. The Labelmaster offers the flexibility of working with labels, monofoils, shrink sleeves and lamitubes, while minimizing material consumption and wastage. Faster make-ready time for shorter run-lengths is
a bigtime productivity booster. All in all, it’s a great buy. We believe the Labelmaster will strengthen our existing pharma label business, and support our entry into new segments including, cosmetics, personal care, FMCG, and Wine.” Going forward, Marks has a definite gameplan in place to become a leading label supplier to the pharma and consumer goods marketplace. The print-shop is planning aggressive capital investments in a state-of-the-art production facility to offer
a comprehensive suite of label solutions to consistently meet customers’ dynamic packaging needs and business objectives. “The Gallus Labelmaster heralds a new era of growth and profitability for Marks. As we explore new revenue avenues, Marks Emballage will continue to help our customers sell more products with innovative and inspiring labeling solutions. And with Heidelberg and Gallus, we believe this will be the beginning of a long and fruitful partnership,” concludes Kashyap. z

Kwality Offset Printers in Delhi
Digital label printing is gaining ground – Rajeev Chhatwal Mahan Hazarika
“I
nnovation excites us more than company turnover,” said Rajeev Chhatwal of Delhi-based Kwality Offset Printers which specializes in the manufacture of wet glue and self-adhesive labels. When it was established in 1972, the company produced cartons and cups for the ice cream industry using a letterpress. A decade later it installed an offset press and entered the label printing business, producing beer labels. Since then the company has added flexo and digital technologies to its existing offset unit. And all the three technologies are currently being used at its Naraina plant, Delhi, to produce a wide range of labels to cater to various customer needs.
The company set up its digital label printing unit in February 2017 by installing a Xeikon 3030 Plus label press. “Conventional doesn’t always work for us with the time and tech pressure we’re under. We had a lot of enquiries from our existing as well as new customers for low volume jobs which were not possible on flexo,” said Chhatwal. “In addition to that, there were customers who wanted value-added label products with high resolution for luxury applications. So we decided to invest in the Xeikon 3030 as it provides a very high resolution of 1200 dpi in addition to giving us the freedom to work with stock at hand, as the substrates do not need any coating or specific pre-treatment.” The Xeikon 3030 Plus label press has a variable web width of 200 mm up to 330 mm and runs at a top speed of 15 m/min. In past one year, the number of customers seeking high quality, short-run digital labels at Kwality has grown at a healthy rate, according to Chhatwal. “We have been looking to tap this new market for quite some time now, and have achieved success lately,” he said. “Statistically, our digital volume has grown 12% since we entered this segment a year-and-a-half ago. Today it constitutes 5% of our total business, while the share of offset and flexo stands at 35% and 60% respectively.” he added. Chhatwal sounded optimistic about further growth of Kwality’s digital volume. “Digital label printing is relatively a new phenomenon. Nevertheless, within a short span it is gaining ground. We have seen customers growing from a mere 2,000 labels to 10,000 labels per month,” said Chhatwal. Kwality Offset has done digital runs as short as 50 meters for its customers. “Digital is an affordable and convenient option for customers looking for fast-turnaround, short-run, high-quality work. In fact, our experience has shown customers

don’t mind shelling out that few extra bucks for fast turnaround time and impeccable quality guaranteed by digital.” A digital label press is never complete without a good finishing machine. So Chhatwal added the AB Graphic Digicon 3 finishing machine soon after installing the Xeikon 3030. The sale was handled by Vinsak, AB Graphic’s India distributor. With a web width of 330 mm, the Digicon 3 finishing machine comprises two flexo units, one diecutting station, hot foiling, cold foiling, embossing, varnish, screen, lamination, waste rewinder, unwinder and three UV systems.

The nutraceuticals market is a volatile one. Today’s star ingredient can be tomorrow’s evil food. That means the supplier has to keep up with fast-moving shelf space, producing smaller runs in shorter timeframes. When one of the leading nutraceutical companies wanted to push its latest product to shelf, they turned to Kwality Offset to execute just the right label, in the right delivery time, and Kwaility Offset didn’t hesitate to turn to digital printing. The fast and flawlessly produced digital label enabled them to invest more in the screen spot UV embellishment. The final finishing touch added the seductive twist the product needed to beef up its shelf presence. “This was a short-term request from one of our clients. We were able to deliver the standard quality they required. We printed the label on our Xeikon 3030 Plus and embellished it with an intricate finishing performed with screen spot UV on our
ABG Digicon Series 3,” said Chattwal. The Pre-Workout 300 label won in the Nutricials/Pharma category for the Flint Group Print Awards 2017. More recently, the Pre-Workout 300 label won (jointly) in the Pharma category of the FINAT Label Competition 2018. The FINAT Label Competition 2018 winners were announced in June 2018. The company also won (jointly) in the Liquid Toner Technology category for its Whey Gold label. This 56 cm label is the largest in this year’s competition. The label is printed in four colors using food grade toners on a metallized film base which gives the total label a bright metallic look contrasting with the black half of the label. The Performance Series P5 was the third narrow web label press for the company, which began its flexo operations with their Mark Andy 2200 flexo machine for manufacturing self-adhesive labels. Creating a record of sorts, Kwality Offset Printer’s Mark Andy 2200 as well as XP5000 were the first ever of its configuration and model to be installed in India at that time. “We purchased the Mark Andy XP5000 press to provide high-end quality labels and packaging to the FMCG, beverage, liquor and wine industries. For us that was definitely the right press at the right time. And with our ever increasing portfolio, we were more than sure that it had to be a P5 press the next time,” said Chhatwal.
Kodak hybrid platesetter system In 2014, Kwality installed the Kodak hybrid platesetter system which includes the Prinergy workflow, driving both the Kodak Flexcel NX and the Trendsetter for its flexo and offset operations. A year later, the company achieved the Kodak Flexcel NX certification for its flexo pre-press operations. “The Flexcel NX certificate has helped enhance our print quality and consistency, which is so important in the high-risk label segment,” concluded Chhatwal. z THE PACKMAN | JUL-AUG 2018

z HP collaborates with Coca-Cola to reinvent relations
Huhtamaki to print 11 crore labels for ‘Share a Coke’ campaign in India
W
ith the aim to provide unique experiences and enhance personal engagement with consumers, HP has collaborated with Coca-Cola to bring the famous ‘Share a Coke’ campaign to India. The initiative aims to give people the opportunity to celebrate relationships that have evolved over the years and reignite them by creating a moment of happiness that comes from sharing a Coke. The ‘Share a Coke’ campaign is being technologically supported by HP Indigo digital printing.
In line with the initiative’s principal idea ‘Har Rishta Bola, Mere Naam Ki CocaCola,’ Coke cans and bottles are now available with 20 special relationships printed on them, including Bae, Bro, Dude, BFF, Dad, Mom, Daughter and more. Labels are created in 12 languages – English, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Bengali, Malayalam, Oriya, Assamese, Gujarati, Punjabi and Marathi. Each relationship is accompanied by an exciting descriptor, such as Grandad (Old School. Yet Cool), Grandma (Scolds me. Spoils me), Daddy (My teacher. My friend), Mom (Above the rest. Simply the best) Son (My devil. My angel), Sis (Supermodel. Super role model), Bro (Troublemaker. Merrymaker), Boss (Pushes me. Promotes me) and nicknames including BFF (Laughs with me. Cries with me), Bae (Bugs me. Hugs me). A total of 11 crore labels will be printed digitally using HP Indigo 20000 digital press on PET bottles on the machine installed at Mumbai-based Huhtamaki. relationships. This campaign aims to encourage Indian consumers to celebrate relationships that have evolved over the years and reignite them by creating a moment of happiness that comes from sharing a Coke.” Commenting on the campaign from HP, A Appadurai, country manager, HP Indigo graphics solutions business, India said, “The campaign comes at a time when brands are increasingly focusing on targeted marketing campaigns to engage
with customers on a personal level and this has resulted in the rise of customization and personalization. The changing tastes of consumers in packaging of goods has the potential to chip away market share of brands as customers value packaging with a personalized touch which adds to the overall emotional quotient of the customer. As a pioneer in changing the digital printing landscape, HP is progressively focusing on offering innovative solutions for them.” “As brands continue to look for ways to connect with their audiences, we are seeing a growing trend of mass personalized packaging, including desktop label printing campaigns in stores. The HP Indigo 20000 opens a realm of possibilities for flexible packaging converters, by enabling them to efficiently and profitably cope with changing market demands for shorter runs, more varied SKUs, and customized campaigns. HP Indigo is the only digital color printing process that matches gravure quality and is safe for primary food packaging,” said Michael Boyle, vice president – graphics solutions business – Asia Pacific and Japan, HP. Amar Chhajed, president – labelling business at Huhtamaki PPL said, “It is an advantage to have a sound customer with us as we made this significant investment. Brining India’s first HP Indigo 20000 should be seen as Huhtamaki’s stepping stone into digital printing. And this investment into digital comes with a much bigger commitment and confidence.” Explaining the complexities on the ‘Share a Coke’ label printing job, Chhajed said, “The variable data printing for the job comprised of 32 relationships, 12 different languages, and five descriptors to each relationship, which summed up to 3,000 artworks getting printed simultaneously.” z

z Smartfire – getting started in digital printing made easy Gallus launches new entry-level digital label press
D
uring the Gallus Innovation Days 2018, which took place from 26 – 28 June 2018, Gallus print experts presented how digitization would change the label industry and how Gallus is going to support their customers to manage this drastic industrial paradigm shift. This year’s Innovation Days highlight is clearly the introduction of a new digital press – a starter model for digital narrow web label printing. On the first day, almost 300 visitors came to the St Gallen headquarters of the Swiss manufacturer of label printing machines to see how Gallus is going to support its customers in managing digitization in label printing.
With the Smartfire, Gallus focuses on new target groups who are looking for a smart entry into digital label printing. This means, the Swiss full-range supplier is expanding its product portfolio with another digital printing press, which is deliberately positioned as an entry-level model. Equipped with the Memjet technology, the inkjet printing press produces labels with a quality of 1600 x 1600 dpi while still keeping the investment costs at a low level. The Gallus Smartfire prints with the Memjet print heads with water-based inks, which means that these labels are ecofriendly and leave a minimal ecological footprint. The Smartfire uses an ordinary power outlet, needs no exhaust equipment, is extremely compact, and emits no Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC), thus making it an ideal press for any work environment. “The Smartfire is absolutely easy to operate via a self-explanatory touch panel,” says Michael Ring, head of digital solutions at Gallus. With this digital press, only a few prepress skills are required to create professional CMYK 4-color inkjet labels. Just as easy are the replacements of the ink-containers and the exchange of the print head. Furthermore, this machine also delivers finished diecut labels, all produced in one pass and ready for shipping on the reel, just like

PM Raflatac is introducing four new food-safe labeling products to the European market. This will expand the company’s food labeling range, providing a wider range of material options for brand owners and packaging designers. All four products meet the European Union’s stringent requirements for food safety.
Synthermal Clear Plus is a high-clarity direct thermal film that provides excellent product visibility for a no-label look on food packaging. Demonstrating a clear commitment to product safety, the film is Bisphenol A (BPA) and Bisphenol S (BPS) free – taking the European Union legislation that requires thermal paper sold in Europe to be BPA free after 2 January 2020 one step further. Synthermal Clear Plus has excellent convertibility with a great deal of flexibility for process improvements at the printer. Premium and artisanal foods need high-quality label materials that can reflect the luxury nature of the brand. At the same time, consumers and brand owners alike are increasingly looking to make more sustainable choices. To address this demand, UPM Raflatac is introducing three new textured and tactile paper face materials that highlight the quality of the products they label while also having excellent sustainability credentials. Antique Food-FSC has a finely textured finish, Fleur de Coton Food-FSC offers a natural finish, and Multiprint Food-FSC has a pleasing satin finish. All three can also be foiled or embossed when printing for a visually stunning end result. The three paper face materials are all FSC certified, guaranteeing that the wood raw material originates from sustainably managed forests. As with Synthermal Clear

Coding and Marking

Product recalls: don’t let your codes let you down James Wolff, global marketing manager at Videojet Technologies, looks at product recalls, the impact they can have on a business and how advanced coding and marking systems can help to mitigate the risks.
I
n the food and beverage industry, expectations of quality are justifiably high across the board, and coding and marking is certainly no exception. Regulatory authorities globally are demanding ever more accurate on-pack coding and information, and brands and consumers are likewise demanding the same. Manufacturers have no choice but to acknowledge these demands, and it is in their best interest to do so. In a recent survey carried out by Videojet, it was revealed that upwards of 70% of coding errors can be attributed to operator error, and these errors can have a huge impact on a business, both financially and in terms of reputation – which are of course inextricably linked.
Incorrectly coded products entering the retail supply chain can have very serious consequences. Firstly, and most importantly, there is the risk to consumers. Allergen information may be incorrect, for example, which could lead to serious consumer health risks. If best before dates are incorrectly applied there could be instances of product going beyond the point at which it’s safe to consume, further endangering public health. Secondly, from a business perspective, regulators can impose huge penalties and fines for incorrectly labelled products. The negative effects a recall would have on the trust consumers have in a brand can be even more costly. In high profile cases where products have had to be withdrawn, sales figures have

become depressed not only due to product being temporarily unavailable, but because consumers have chosen to switch away from a brand due to a lack of trust. Negative reports can spread quickly, particularly given the access to social media outlets in today’s digitally driven world, and can be very difficult to contain once they enter the many and varied platforms available. In instances where a product has not reached the retail supply chain, coding errors still have the potential to cause major financial damage. The costs associated with scrapping or reworking products that have been incorrectly coded have a direct impact on manufacturers’ bottom lines, and can be avoided using advanced coding and marking systems in conjunction with code assurance software.
Taking a proactive approach to code assurance In another survey carried out by Videojet, many FCMG companies reported experiencing coding errors on a regular basis – some as frequently as once a day. To reduce these instances, or eliminate them altogether, a number of steps can be taken. Retraining staff and performing cross checks ahead of committing to a job is a common response. However, in order to make a real impact, one should embrace solutions that deliver automated accuracy, at the same time reducing the risk of human error through decreased interaction. This is where advanced software enters the equation. Sincethe majority of coding errors occur as the result of incorrect job selection or code entry, removing the most

important elements of this process from the operator makes a significant difference. We acknowledge that removal of the operator altogether is not possible, but it is feasible to restrict their input to predefined formats and content choices, thereby reducing the risk for error. Predefined coding rules automate much of the message creation process, minimizing day-to-day operator input while ensuring that any necessary operator interaction complies with policies and logic that pertain to the specific job. To facilitate this, the user interface of the printer can be designed with several features, including smart settings that ensure use-by and sell-by dates are linked correctly. For example, when a sell-by date is selected the correct use-by date can be automatically generated. Data can also be restricted to drop-down lists to prevent incorrect key presses and required fields can be prompted
before allowing an operator to commence a job. Message creation can alsobe removed from the production floor entirely, moving the task to a central location where an accountable person with the requisite training can take responsibility away from the bustle of the production environment.
Which technology is right for your business? Code assurance is rendered ineffective if the code technology is not optimized for the packaging material and production environment. It is critical that the correct application for your products be selected from the outset. To achieve this, working with an expert supplier is highly recommended, as they will be able to provide guidance throughout your project. First, an understanding should be gained of how a line is operatingbefore extensive testing is Code assurance is rendered ineffective if the code technology is not optimized for the packaging material and production environment
carried out on packaging substrates. Then determine whether a laser is preferable over a continuous inkjet printer (CIJ), for example, or which ink will best suit the package. For packaging formats such as bags and pouches, cartons, jars, tins and cans the choice is often between CIJ, thermal transfer overprinters (TTO), thermal inkjet (TIJ), and laser printers. CIJ is a fluid-based application that enables non-contact printing of up to five lines of text, linear and 2D bar codes, or graphics, printed on a variety of packaging types, including stationary packaging via traversing systems.Numerous food grade inks have been developed to ensure regulatory requirements can be fulfilled without compromising on code quality, and fluids that are capable of withstanding high temperatures are also available. Laser coders do not use consumables and work by removing a layer of substrate to create a code or mark. In addition to CIJ and laser, TTO and TIJ technologies are also available. TTO is popular for printing on flexible films and can produce high resolution codes without the use of solvents – a popular benefit in both the food and beverage sectors. TIJ is more prevalent where cartons are used and provides high resolution ink-based printing with a compact design. This enables simple integration into lines where space is at a premium. Finally, for outer case labelling there are large character marking (LCM) and label print and apply (LPA) applications. Both can create high quality codes designed to withstand the rigours of the supply chain. Where product recalls are required for any reason - a contaminant may have been found in a certain batch, for example – these secondary codes are criticalfor locating products quickly along the supply chain. While training of production line staff can go some way towards mitigating the risk of a code-related product recall, a move towards automation will almost certainly provide a far higher level of peace of mind – as well as a clear trail of events in terms of production line data. Code assurance is the key, and through adopting a combination of highly advanced software and high-quality coding and marking equipment, manufacturers can be confident that their codes will not let them down. z THE PACKMAN | JUL-AUG 2018

Dev Kumar Dutta
ccording to a report, anti-counterfeit packaging technologies market is expected to reach US$ 357.92 billion by 2026 with 13.7 % CAGR during the forecast period from 2018 to 2026. In 2017, North America led the anticounterfeit packaging technologies market. Asia Pacific is estimated to be the fastest growing region between 2018 and 2026.
According to World Customs Organization, the trade of counterfeit goods use to generate a value of over US$ 650 billion, annually. Strong international trade, lack of trade regulations, and globally weak supply chains are some factors posturing a constant challenge to customs authorities around the world. The custom authorities strive to achieve trade-off between regulating and facilitating trade, which in turn lead to inflow of counterfeited products in the world economy. Trade expansion between countries, easy payments and wellestablished distribution channel also proving useful for the counterfeiting activities. Online distribution channel spread across national boundaries has boosted the flow of goods across the world. However, afforded anonymity to counterfeiters with an unlimited market place along with low-cost communication and investment are some major factors that has opened the opportunities for counterfeit product trade. Further, weak and compromised enforcement of both national and international intellectual property rights has made counterfeiting a low entry barrier market. Counterfeiting poses a significant threat to public health and safety and detrimental to global commerce. Anti-counterfeit packaging technologies can prove useful, which provides an important service to manufacturers, governments, and consumers. Technology like coding and printing, lead the market in 2017 and is expected to maintain its dominance over the forecast period. The use of holograms are also proven technology that acts as a barrier to counter counterfeit products and its packaging. It conserves revenue, marketing investment made by the manufacturer, customer loyalty and brand-image. Above all, anti-counterfeit packaging technologies authenticate a product’s genuineness, track-and-trace it to offer product

These technologies help in eliminating potential fraudulent use of manufacturer’s brand image that is detriment to the product market growth. Key players operating in the market includes Banknote Corporation of America, Sennett Security Products, 3M Company, Avery Dennison Corporation, CCL Industries, Digimarc and Zebra Technologies amongst others.
Asia-Pacific is projected to witness fastest growth registering a CAGR of 16.0 % during the forecast period from 2018 to 2026. This growth can be attributed to high economic growth, heavy investments in automotive and industrial and food and beverages industries, and rise in the manufacturing sector of this region. Further, increasing demand for quality products, rising population, and growing end-use industries have led to innovation and developments in these industries, making Asia-Pacific a strong end-use application hub, globally. Asia has majority of counterfeit products and expected to grow tremendously in the near future as per Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD ).
Food and beverages industry Currently, food and beverages is one of the leading end-use industry by value, accounted for 36% in 2017 and expected to retain its prominence with highest CAGR throughout the forecast period. Counterfeit in food and beverages industry includes product faking, product substitution, product adulteration, product copy, unauthorized refill, etc. The anti-counterfeit packaging technologies market is projected to witness robust growth in food and beverages sector during the forecast period owing to incessant demand for packaged food & beverages. Moreover, changing consumer preference and growing concern over food safety calls for more effective solution to mitigate the risk of counterfeit product in the industry. It is estimated that counterfeit food and beverages market will grow by US$ 49 billion annually, which creates a huge opportunity for anticounterfeit packaging technologies.
Coding and printing technology – dominant type in 2017 Coding and printing technology accounted for approximately 35% of the anti-counterfeit packaging market in 2017 and expected to maintain its dominance during the forecasted period. Coding and printing can be used as both overt and covert approach, which gives an edge to this technology over other technologies. Factors such as low cost, easy application, easy recognition, and incorporation of covert technology with overt are expected to propel the technology growth during the forecast period from 2018 to 2026. Bosch plans to sell its packaging business
A
fter intensively and thoroughly considering all its strategic options, Bosch has decided to look for a buyer for its packaging machinery business (PA), more specifically the pharmaceuticals and food units of the Packaging Technology division.
With the Bosch Group needing to focus on the transformation ahead, it has not identified any sufficiently relevant synergy effects in terms of business or technology that might offer the division prospects for the future within Bosch. Therefore, packaging technology is not part of the group’s core business. PA is involved in project business relating to specialized areas of the packaging industry. The company also operates in a competitive environment in which the players are small and medium-
sized enterprises (SMEs), and who are therefore at a structural advantage. Bosch is certain that its packaging technology operations need to be put on a different footing that will allow them to react more flexibly to the specific requirements of the packaging machinery market. The company’s special-purpose machinery manufacturer Robert Bosch Manufacturing Solutions GmbH is a separate entity, and will
remain part of the Bosch Group. “This decision will allow Bosch to narrow its focus on issues of importance for its future, such as the transformation of the Bosch Group and its future digitalization strategy, including the internet of things, and to pool its resources accordingly,” says Stefan Hartung, the Bosch board of management member responsible for the Energy and Building Technology and Industrial Technology business sectors. “Both PA and Bosch will benefit from this decision. A reorganized packaging technology business will be able to adapt more flexibly to the diverse requirements of this typically SME market, while Bosch will be free to focus its attention entirely on the group’s impending profound transformation,” Hartung adds. z

Smurfit Kappa expands its packaging solutions for apple juice
S
murfit Kappa Bag-in Box developed the Thermo Bag to meet the specifications of hot filling which is a commonly used processing method in the drinks industry. During hot filling, the product is pressed, filtered, pasteurized, heated and filled at a high temperature to facilitate sterilization and then immediately cooled for preservation and taste. This method has the advantage of extending shelf life, removing any harmful microorganisms, reducing costs and simplifying the process.
Hot filling is widely used in the production of fresh (not from concentrate) apple juice which has grown increasingly popular due to its freshness and health benefits. Bagin-Box packaging is an attractive option for both consumers and producers because in
addition to maintaining the product’s quality it is eco-friendly and cost-efficient.
Smurfit Kappa’s innovative new Thermo Bag is a barrier bag made from special coextruded PE film (MDPE for thermoresistance and LLDPE for flexibility) and EVOH for oxygen barrier. “Thanks to their low carbon footprint and extended shelf life, our Bag-in-Box products offer a more sustainable choice of packaging for many industries and Smurfit Kappa relentlessly continues to develop higher performance materials for the drinks market,” said Thierry Minaud, CEO of Smurfit Kappa Bag-inBox. “The Thermo Bag is bringing competitive advantage to producers and enhanced quality to consumers.”Smurfit Kappa’s Thermo Bag is a further example of the company’s extensive capabilities in the drinks industry. z THE PACKMAN | may-jun 2018
