his is going to be a very exciting month for the label industry. Hot on the heels of the hugely successful Labelexpo Americas 2018, which recently took place in Chicago, the 6th edition of Labelexpo India, the top label and package printing event in the region, is now just weeks away. The show continues to grow in strength – with over 250 exhibitors from across the label and package printing industry signing up this year, which is a significant increase of 25% on the 2016 edition.
The event, scheduled to be held from 22-25 November 2018, at India Expo Centre & Mart, Greater Noida, one can hope to see the continued evolution of digital printing – both standalone and hybrid systems. The key themes in terms of flexo press development will be waste reduction, faster changeovers and automation. Pressure-sensitive label technology continues to be the core of the show, with growth rates of up to 8% year-on-year, but we also expect to see diversification into shrink sleeves, flexible packaging and smart label technology. In this edition of The Packman, we bring you interesting product previews of Labelexpo India. In addition, we report on label press installations across various cities in India, and Nilpeter’s new manufacturing and development facility in Chennai, India. In our cover story, read about India’s leading gravure cylinder manufacturer, Afflatus Gravure, which diversified to flexography recently. The company’s new state-of-the-art flexo division at its Noida plant is powered by a DuPont Cyrel 3000 Modular InLiner System which features plate processing through finishing in one linear design. In a somewhat similar story, Gujarat-based Vishal Containers has diversified its business to include flexography; it already has a gravure unit. The company starts its brand new journey towards flexo by installing a hybrid flexo press, Comexi F2 MP. Also included in this edition: The winners of Pentawards, the most prestigious worldwide competition devoted exclusively to packaging design. This year marked the 12th edition of the awards, with the event being held at the iconic Solomon R Guggenheim Museum in New York. We cordially invite you to meet our team at the Labelexpo India 2018 exhibition. – Mahan Hazarika, Editor, editor@thepackman.in

z Adding festive spirit through packaging design Haldiram’s collaborates with DesignerPeople for special gift packaging Devaleena Joardar
O
n the occasion of Raksha Bandhan, Haldiram’s wanted to give customers a fresh vibe and sparkling feel through its special Raksha Bandhan sweets. So it approached DesignerPeople, a Delhi/NCR-based design consultancy, to help it strategize and develop a unique packaging.
In India sweets are an integral part of all rituals, auspicious occasions, and celebrations. And it is no different for Raksha Bandhan, as the festival is celebrated in almost every culture. On this special day, brothers and sisters celebrate their bond, relive their childhood memories and display affection through sweets and gifts. Shurti Agarwal of Haldiram’s said, “For us, every festival in India is important and we pay special attention to how we can add flavors to the lives of our customers during these festive seasons. At Haldiram’s we understand that just focusing on manufacturing unique and quality sweets is not enough – even its packaging is equally important. We wanted to make sure that our packaging for Raksha Bandhan sweets conveyed a powerful emotional message that celebrates the ‘sweet and sour’ relationship between brother and sister.” DesignerPeople worked closely with Haldiram’s to understand the requirements as well determine price point for Raksha Bandhan gift packs to compete with other brands. Shivam Gandhi of DesignerPeople, said, “We have worked with Haldiram’s before and this was a special assignment. Our focus was to add a festive spirit to the product through our design packaging strategy.” “Since Haldiram’s offers services like other modern restaurants and food courts and is no longer just a sweet shop, it wanted

The new packaging exhibited vibrant color themes coupled with the pictures of delicious looking sweet items packed inside the box a packaging design that captured the consumer at a mass level. Also, for the market base, they wanted to focus on Maharashtra and Southern part of India. Hence, an overall shift was needed to build a connect with consumers at a mass level and an out-loud welcome invitation was needed to give a new experience. For the Raksha Bandhan project, the team at DesignerPeople focused on creating an umbrella theme of ‘Sweet Bond’ (sweet ‘N’ sour, vibrant, everlasting and trustworthy bond). They worked on each of these elements by giving four unique names to each packaging to give a personal touch to celebrate the brother-sister bonding. Each of the four packaging designs conveyed the message of Sneh Bandhan, Atoot Rishtey, Anmol Bandhan and Madhur Rishtey. The
designs of these sub-themes evoked the sense of nostalgic memories of childhood. The vibrant colored packaging themes were coupled with pictures of delicious looking sweet items that were packed inside the box. Every box contained 2-3 types of sweets. To ensure that the pictures were as expressive as the special designs created, photo-shoot was conducted by India’s leading food stylist and photographer Saba Gaziyani, in coordination with DesignerPeople. Haldiram’s cherished the fact that colors used were vibrant and depicted Indian festive colors – each indicating harmony, brightness, enthusiasm, power and love. The color uniformity in all the four designs and the Indian-ethnic style font worked as a vital feature and garnered appreciation from customers. z

T
he international jury of Pentawards, the first and most prestigious worldwide competition devoted exclusively to packaging design, has announced the 2018 winners. This year, the 12th edition of the Pentawards was held at the iconic Solomon R Guggenheim Museum in New York. On 6 September 2018, the gala ceremony played host to over 280 of the most creative, innovative and disruptive members of the global packaging design community, all winners of the 2018 competition.
The 2018 edition of the Pentawards received 2,318 entries from 64 countries in 5 continents. This shows an increase of 15% from the previous year and the truly global reach of this competition. In addition to the Diamond Pentaward and the 5 Platinum Pentawards, the international jury also awarded 41 Gold Pentawards, 84 Silver Pentawards and 90 Bronze Pentawards across the 55 categories competing this year.

Diamond Pentaward 2018 Mutti – Auge Design Mutti, the 2018 Best of the Show – Diamond Pentaward winner, designed by the Italian studio Auge Design, presented no challenge to this year’s jury, by giving them no alternative but to award it with nothing less than the highest level of recognition for packaging design accredited by Pentawards. The limited-edition range of traditional Italian tomato-based ingredients have been given a new lease of life, with a blend of past and future through an intricate system of symbols, that not only represent the different types of tomatoes and sauces in the range but that also become a powerful pattern, resonating throughout the entire range. Starting from the original format, the range has been adorned with a new glamorous and luxurious feel, with a

A design that is as cute as it is curious, Shirokuma no Okome created by the Japanese agency Frame inc. is fantastically simple, yet it leaves everything to the imagination. The concept was to bridge the gap between the rice company Shirokuma no Okome and the brand image ‘Polar Bear.’ This led to the creation of the charming and warm illustrations, which reflect the true gentleness of the product. The design is beyond the physical product itself (rice), however it is used to elevate the brand in to a new space, away from its competition by appealing to the emotive senses of the consumer.

In a highly competitive category, the Guocui Wudu bottle, designed by the Chinese agency Shenzhen Lingyun Creative Packaging Design, stood out as a design that delivers its message with the absence of an actual description. The overall finish is bold, clean, detailed and rich, all of which are features that elude to the liquors’ high quality and premium contents.
Bloomdale is an eyewear brand that doesn’t follow the typical brand codes created by Studio Kluif. Instead of using photography, like most brands do to promote their new eyewear models, a series of iconic portraits was developed to underline the brand’s tag line, A Bloomdale for every face. These portraits play an important role in all communications. In order to create a more extensive brand experience, a packaging range was created with which the optician makes a more personal statement towards the client. Each box can be fitted with a different portrait depending on whether the client is male, female or even a child.

ting a dialogue between home, scent and time with an hourglass-shaped diffusing scent, with an ever-more exclusive design. A unique silhouette and a unique glass coating now differentiates each of the 6 fragrances, which asserts the house’s decorative universe and pays tribute to its eclectic inspirations. Its colddiffusing technology delivers perfume notes through ingenious wicks, which have been developed to widen the diffusion area, through a new patent developed by Techniplast. The Hourglass remains a sustainable initiative with an unchanged refilling system.
Nxt-Gen Award 2018 Panda Cigarette – Yu Chen In a crowded market it is essential to stand out. GATUNA, from the Spanish agency BOLD is a brand that executes this with class. The cat litter market is full of standard products with no apparent differentiation. The challenge was to leave behind the product’s technical details, in favour of developing a relationship with the consumer to become their first option. The product is sold in specialised pet shops in Spain. Inteligentemente practica (smartly practical), is a concept that highlights how easy to clean the litter is, also telling the customer that it will save them time to spend it where it matters most – with their cat. The design, based on the illustration, breaks with the visual codes of the sector (cold and technologic) to express simplicity and a sense understanding between the brand, the physical product itself and the consumer.

Panda cigarette package is designed for warning people about the harms of smoking. Before being unwrapped, it showcases a complete image of a panda head printed on transparent film, while the cigarettes are pulled out one by one, seen through the panda pattern, the interior skull image emerges. A transformation from a black panda head to a skull against a
white background, it creates a stark and sharp contrast of imagery. Sub-health has become a normal state in today’s hectic life. Children are instinctively attracted to pandas, so this beforeand-after contrast between a cute panda head and a horrible deathly skull is a much stronger message for them than conventional health warnings. If they learn to avoid cigarettes at a young age, they are less likely to grow up to be smokers. z

he new William Grant ‘Triplewood’ whisky bottle has been redesigned with quality, distinction and authenticity in mind for the worldwide relaunch of its whisky range. Ardagh Group has worked with William Grant and design agency, Here Design, to develop a contemporary bottle for the brand’s six whiskies: two triple wood editions and three cask editions.
The new bottle leverages the brand’s existing design assets with a more modern, premium look and feel. The triangle shape is more distinctive with its wider footprint and shorter bottle, enhancing masculine cues. The ‘Stand Fast’ banner embossing on the front and family crest embossing on the back of the bottle are sculpted to achieve more depth and detail. Speaking about producing the new bottle shape, Ardagh Group product design engineer, Asaf Mahmood, says, “Achieving

consistent glass distribution is more challenging with the wider design of the bottle. However, we managed to design and manufacture the new bottles at the same weights as the previous bottle designs, in 70cl, 75cl and 1 litre versions.” Maria Ropero Ortiz, global brand manager of William Grant says, “The new bottle design is just as we planned for the new range, satisfying our customers’ desire for pared-back contemporary design with some of the flamboyance and quality cues of the previous bottle, creating a positive brand change experience.” z

z New integrated, solvent- and VOC-free flexo plate making solution
Kodak expands Flexcel NX product family
O
ver the past decade, the Kodak Flexcel NX System has revolutionized the flexo industry, bringing an unprecedented level of quality and performance to flexo printing for the benefit of everyone involved in the packaging value chain. Kodak is now announcing another innovation – its Kodak Flexcel NX Ultra Solution which is the result of Kodak’s continued R&D investment in flexo. Next phase in the continuing success story of Flexcel NX
The Flexcel NX Ultra Solution enables the outstanding and proven print performance for which Flexcel NX plates have become well known, with solvent-free, VOC-free, water-based processing that can deliver a press-ready plate in less than an hour and sustain clean, consistent plates in a highvolume production environment. Enabled by new, innovative and patent-pending Kodak Ultra Clean technology, the Flexcel NX Ultra Solution is the first aqueous solution that provides consistent, high-performing flexo plates in a high volume, low maintenance environment. “The Flexcel NX Ultra 35 Solution is the first product to be commercialized from the Ultra NX technology demonstration that we previewed at drupa two years ago and has undergone extensive customer beta trials in demanding production environments. We are passionate about bringing robust technologies to market and extremely encouraged by the positive experiences of our early adopters,” said Chris Payne, president, flexographic packaging division and vice president of Kodak.

Over the past decade, the Kodak Flexcel NX System has revolutionized the flexo industry, bringing an unprecedented level of quality and performance to flexo printing
Beta sites adopt Flexcel NX Ultra Plates into full production Matt Gauthier, prepress and customer service manager for the label division of G3 Enterprises, says, “We can do essentially anything we want print-wise with the Kodak plates but it’s also important to be able to quickly produce an individual plate, especially when we have customers in-house for a press check. It’s been great to have NX Ultra in place, providing the same quality level but requiring much less time to produce a plate.” G3 Enterprises is a busy wine label operation in California that produces over 8000 production jobs a year and switched from thermal plates to Kodak Flexcel NX plates a number of years ago to increase quality.
“We have a green initiative in our facility,” explains Rob Anderson, director, production and planning, IGT, a major lottery ticket printer based in Florida. “So, knowing that NX Ultra was to be a water wash product and we wouldn’t have to deal with solvent-based processing it was very appealing to us. The operators of our flexo presses really appreciate the Kodak plates. They see the difference in the dots and how they print and how vignettes, our fine screens, how everything looks so much cleaner and essentially it has made their job much easier. The NX Ultra product itself has been all that has been promised. We can get plates much faster and we have accomplished our green initiative.”

z Strengthening digital postpress operations Heidelberg takes over MBO Group Anwesh Koley
With the acquisition of MBO, Heidelberg will gain access to new customers in the pharmaceutical industry and add mailing system offerings to its offset portfolio
H
eidelberg is taking over the international MBO Group in a bid to further expand its offerings in the growing market of postpress operations for digitally printed products. The move will also see the company gain access to new customers in the pharmaceutical industry and add mailing system offerings to its offset portfolio.
This decision highlights the company’s strategic focus on consistently aligning its portfolio and new business model with the growth segments of digital and packaging. Furthermore, Heidelberg aims to use this extended offering to tap into new customer groups for its entire product portfolio. “The planned takeover of the MBO Group enables us to attain further sustainable and profitable growth by leveraging new technologies and customer segments,” said Rainer Hundsdörfer, CEO of Heidelberg. “By acquiring MBO’s digital portfolio, we are closing a gap for our customers and helping them achieve a smooth industrial process in the digital future. We also expect to see synergies in our own value added chain, which will bring about tangible benefits for customers, too.” The acquired operations account for a sales volume of around € 50 million and will see Heidelberg expand its postpress offerings. The acquisition involves, among other things, taking over the sites in Oppenweiler and Bielefeld, Germany, and the production site in Perifita, Portugal, which employ a total of approximately 450 staff. Besides the German sites, the efficiently structured site in Portugal opens up particularly interesting opportunities for the entire Heidelberg Group. “Even when postpress operations are running efficiently, there is still huge potential for boosting productivity throughout the entire print shop,” claims Stephan Plenz, member of the management board respon-

sible for digital technology. “The takeover is another important step in offering our customers a comprehensive portfolio that generates value and covers everything from technology and consumables right through to service.” The MBO brand is well-established on the market and its technology complements the Heidelberg product range well. Continuing to expand offerings together will optimize the portfolio and supply chain, while leveraging the MBO dealer and service network will also result in mutual benefits. Overall, the acquisition is set to create a better basis for unlocking shared potential for future-focused developments that are geared toward market demands. The planned takeover of the MBO
Group is another strategic step for Heidelberg as it seeks to secure its future by pursuing continuous innovation for the benefit of customers. The aim is to increase productivity and decrease costs by achieving maximum efficiency across all print shop processes. The Heidelberg Push to Stop concept and the company’s industrial digital print portfolio for the packaging market, which includes the Labelfire and Primefire product ranges, is driving forward digitalization. In this regard, integrated postpress solutions are playing an increasingly important role when it comes to optimizing the end-to-end process. Subject to the agreement of the antitrust authorities, the takeover is due to be completed provisionally by the end of 2018. z

mami’s has announced its plans to invest Rs. 2,000 crore in a threeyear plan that envisages the setting up of a new plant in Bharuch in Gujarat to triple its production of high-quality coated packaging board. The foundation stone of the greenfield plant located near the Narmada river was laid by Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani, on 21 September 2018 in the presence of Emami’s top management.
Headquartered in Kolkata, the Emami group consists of FMCG company Emami (turnover Rs. 2,400 crore); Emami Paper Mills (turnover Rs. 1343 crore); and, Emami Infrastructure (turnover Rs. 120 crore). All three companies are listed on the stock exchange and are profitable with a consolidated turnover of Rs. 3,863 crore and a consolidated profit of Rs. 330 crore in the financial year ended 31 March 2018. In the same financial year, Emami Paper had a turnover of Rs. 1343 crore with a profit of 16.38 crore.

Shaping the next decade for packaging printers Laurel Brunner
A
few traumatic years and much disruption in the graphics business has seen renovation and renewal in many parts of the industry. But none has enjoyed such dramatic rejuvenation as the flexo sector. Chemical and imaging advances are helping flexographers compete with alternative printing methods, including offset, gravure and digital printing. Flexo has shed its former, slightly dowdy, reputation as these advances create exciting new applications, business opportunities and highly capable manufacturing processes.
Packaging, flexo’s traditional stronghold, gets a lot of attention these days. Digital press manufacturers are eyeing up the sector and packaging producers and brands want new ways to engage with customers. Rob Vermeulen, board member of the European Brand & Packaging Design Association (ePDA), identifies the Z generation millennials who “don’t want to communicate in the conventional way.” Rob’s colleague, Uwe Melichar, president of ePDA, says generation Z “Want It When I Want It Where I Want It” and expect more. “We see a movement from the major brands to the private label. The private label will become more and more strong and change their communications because they’re not bound to the history.” This is music to the ears of digital printing systems manufacturers working on packaging presses for on demand short run applications. In coming years digital printing will indeed be a bigger part of the services mix, but it will not dominate. Competing with flexo technology’s speed and materials flexibility is tough and flexo technologies such as the Kodak Flexcel NX System, cel-

ebrating its tenth birthday this year, will ensure flexo’s continued edge.
Looking good Further improvements to flexo prepress will deliver yet higher output quality and productivity, and at a reasonable cost. The Kodak Flexcel NX System meets growing customer demands for tighter process control and faster job turnarounds. According to Chris Payne, president of Kodak’s flexographic packaging division,“we’re at the beginning of this transition in flexo for packaging.” The print method is both taking share from gravure and offset and seeing organic growth. As it becomes easier to control and results become more predictable, investment risks come down. Payne says, “Flexo is the most adaptable of all print processes and Flexcel NX Plate technology supports the step-change in on-press performance required to implement new and more efficient ways of working, such as a reduction in spot color inks and the adoption of ECG (Extended Color Gamut) printing.” Ink and coating innovations, as well as new screening developments specifically for packaging print, are helping ECG printing implementations spread as color becomes simpler for flexo printers to manage in software to guarantee accurate color appearance on the printing substrate. Flexo changes slowly “and we’re not done with investing. Flexcel NX technology is one key component as we move forward in the standardization of the process,” according to Payne. He adds that “we have other things that will help to drive even greater efficiency and sustainability.”
Advancing onwards The next ten years are all about materials science and developers working with
brands and retailers to drive graphics technology improvements. Digital printing systems produce prints on demand and for very short runs, serving small local producers of goods such as honey or cosmetics, artworks and craft goods. However, for digital printing technology to achieve sufficient scale for FMCG will take time. We can expect to see much more variety and diversity in packaging solutions in the next ten years. Flexo technology keeps improving process reliability and stability, so supply chains are reforming, and workflow systems increasingly support ECG printing and distributed job management. These are key development areas for major digital press manufacturers, keen to provide competitive advantage over flexography. But with over 500 customers using the Kodak Flexcel NX System in daily production, the company has the necessary experience and market intimacy to keep it at the leading edge of flexo and packaging production.
There’s more Over the next ten years in emerging markets where keeping food fresh is difficult, growing cold supply chains will lead to new packaging and labels applications. According to the United Nations Development Programme, over 40% of food produced in India is wasted due to factors that include lack of cold supply chains and accessible packaging materials. Even in warm places, plastic wraps on coconuts can extend shelflife from four to twelve weeks. And new formats are emerging as shopping habits change, requiring smaller quantities and trial sizes. Dr John Anderson, responsible for business development at Kodak, says, “We’ve gone from supermarkets holding around 9,000 product lines in the 1970s to over 45,000 in the 2000’s.” Varying sizes
In-Depth Article and versions plus short turnaround requirements add pressure to complex supply chains, and smaller quantities create more packaging. One package for a loaf of bread becomes multiple packages with fewer slices, more likely to be eaten than discarded. This increases packaging but reduces food waste. Sustainability is about balance, so pressure for environmentally friendly packaging life-cycles will rise in line with changing recycling behaviors.
Sort it Anderson explains that Europe has one of the highest levels of recycling in the world … [but] there is a difference between recycling and reusing and recovering components from the product. One of the problems with plastics recycling is getting enough of the material to make it easy and economically viable to recycle. Brands are getting together to develop mechanisms for sorting at recycling plants instead of in the home or at curb side. Apart from the complex politics there are many challenges to achieving this, requiring technology and investment into separation processes, managing mixed components, dealing with contaminants and consumer education. Flexible packaging use will keep rising.
Flexible flexo Knowing how to prepare for the next ten years depends fundamentally on an awareness of technological developments and being able to see where current trends are heading. The flexo sector is slow moving but working hard to exploit digital workflow and process automation technologies. With more predictable plate making using technologies such as the Kodak Flexcel NX System’s, this gets easier. Laser Ablative Mask System (LAMS) technologies widely used for flexo plate production over the last 20 years are reaching their performance limits and are challenged to match Kodak’s speed and output quality, without using additional products and processes involving time and cost. Kodak employs a combination of high resolution film-based mask, Kodak Square Spot Imaging Technology and a unique lamination process to create extremely sharp flat-topped dots that are a 1:1 faithful reproduction of the digital file and opti-
mized for printing. This technical approach brings a greater degree of precision to the plate making process and offers significant potential for future developments that will further the evolution of standardized, automated print production.
Training and knowledge development Understanding how to get the most out of new technologies helps companies improve services to customers and their bottom line profits. But making a change takes effort. Stefano d’Andrea, a technical consultant with the European Flexo Technology Association reminds flexo printers that “new technologies are useless if you don’t use them in the proper way.” He suggests that flexo printers stop using the press as a proofer because it’s no longer necessary to work that way. d’Andrea has also found that technology, such as the Flexcel NX System can make flexo cleaner and greener, for example by reducing environmental impacts using ECG printing which reduces the number of inks required. As well as saving money, ECG printing means less wash-up on press, predictable color control, faster makereadies and more reliable file sharing across output processes. Effective implementation of ECG requires an understanding of digital color management because as d’Andrea says “you have to demonstrate how good you are in CMYK to reach expanded gamut.” Offset printers print to ISO print control aims extracted from predefined characterization data sets for different printing conditions. CRPC7, (Characterized Reference Printing Conditions) one of several characterization data sets used in ISO graphic technology standards, characterizes CMYK’s widest color gamut in offset. d’Andrea points out that “we should be able to do that in flexo” and that brand owners and printers can work together to ease conversion of process specific data sets for automatic color data repurposing because “if you can measure it, you can control it.” Over the next ten years we expect to see many more flexo printers improving color control and output reliability, because this is what their customers want.
Control freaks Output control depends as much on the
printing plate as it does on software and robust characterization data sets. Improvements in plate technology are catalysts for wider changes in the industry and have pushed Kodak to keep refining the Flexcel NX System. But they are also spurring ink and coating innovations, and Anderson says, “one of the trends we look at is can the print be part of the barrier properties: can we add stuff to ink to create a barrier?” A quick examination of some leading brand initiatives reinforces the need for technology solutions. The Pepsi 2025 sustainability agenda is working to achieve zero waste to landfill, through collaborations with other big brands for sorting and processing waste. Pepsi aims for 100% of its packaging to be recyclable by 2025 and there are already signs that other big names are following suit. Iceland, a UK retailer of frozen foods has committed to becoming 100% plastic-free by 2025. By then we can expect considerable materials advances. Today’s eco materials are made with plant-based products but taking corn from food chain makes food more expensive. Anderson says the “next generation of products will come from waste products from plant materials,” such as a monolayer instead of multilayer substrates which are hard to recycle. Aluminum oxide (AlOx) is “a coating solution. It’s very thin but when you melt the plastic, the AlOx floats to the surface and can be renewed and recycled … the chemistry is really starting to move.” Since 2008, flexo technology advances have focused on chemical and imaging innovations and reshaped the sector. By 2028 flexo printing will match offset for stability and predictability and traditional supply chains will collapse and reform. It will be a bumpy ride but as Anderson says, “it’s all of us together … all of us in partnership driving operational efficiency and sustainability together.” z

high quality photopolymer plates per day, 24/7, the integrated system is the first of its kind installation in Asia. The company has also invested in UV LED imager CDI Crystal 5080 (integrated with XPS Crystal) and Kongsberg table from Esko that drive the flexo division along with the Cyrel 3000.
Speaking about the reason for investing in the DuPont Cyrel 3000 Modular InLiner System, Arun Pandey, vice president of Afflatus Gravure says, “Packaging is a growing market. New investments are taking
place and we were looking for inliner, as batch processor, dryer and light finishing. High LPI printing plates are very sensitive and handling them in a conventional way increases the chances of compromising on quality. Another challenge is handling big plates. As we are well versed with robotic operation in gravure cylinder, it gave us confidence to choose single unit with automatic handling of plates. We concluded to have a unit where we insert the plates from one place and get print ready plates as output. DuPont helped us achieve this.”

Pandey adds that Afflatus has invested in a new technology to help its customers upgrade. “Since we have a long relation with our clients and brand owners, and being well established with proven workflow from prepress through print, there was a requirement to fulfill the demand for flexo plates as well, which we surveyed and found the growing demand for high quality plate in wide-web specifically. We have chosen a technology where high resolution printing Full HD Flexo with comparable density like gravure can be achieved. The moment you go for high LPI, ink laying get enhanced, the consumption of printing inks and solvents go down, and at the same time, we are able to use high speed printing.”
UV LED imager The new imager CDI Crystal 5080 works with Crystal Technology, and is designed to connect seamlessly with the XPS Crystal digital UV exposure device. Combining high resolution fiber laser imaging from the CDI Crystal with the patented back and front UV LED exposure from the XPS
Crystal is producing digital flexo plates with unique reproducibility and quality. The integration and automation of digital imaging and LED UV exposure improves consistency and overall ease of use. This solution not only frees up valuable operator time but also reduces maintenance and the footprint of your flexo equipment. “The exposure is a LED-curing system, which allows us to configure perfect flat-top dot without flushing nitrogen into it. At the same time, the system can be customized for all kind of plates,” said Pandey.
Rising demand for Flexo Poly printing/mono layer of thin micron is getting popular in India in terms of sanitary napkin, cooking oil and liquid packaging, especially milk and others. Normal gravure cannot print on such thin poly easily, as it is sensitive in terms of stretchability. Thus, CI flexo printing presses were designed. “Fortunately or unfortunately, CI flexo printing presses are available with only flexo printing heads. That’s why flexo is getting popular,” explained Pandey. z

Print and Packaging Equipment (PPE) is the business unit of A.T.E. Enterprises catering to the print, packaging and converting industries. Responding to the challenges of delivering superlative print qual-
ity, A.T.E. developed the highly successful real-time automatic register control system, AlygnAXIS, for correcting registration issues in printing processes, and guaranteed to boost productivity and profitability in web printing processes. Encouraged by the success of register control systems and recognizing the evolving market expectations of quality, A.T.E. launched a range of web video and print inspection products. Apart from entry level web-video, we offer a unique full print repeat web viewing system – ViewAXIS Tera, which can monitor full width of the web in real-time, thus fulfilling a long-felt need in the Indian market. The 55-inch 4K monitor, displaying images of 50+ megapixels resolution, results in ‘nearprint quality’ visualization. TheViewAXIS Tera was an idea we came up with from our discussions with printers and OEMs. They wanted an intermediate system which could, at a later stage, be upgraded to a 100% print inspection system – DetectAXIS. There are two advantages in this. First, operators get to learn to identify the defects on a full print repeat monitoring system. Second, investment can be done in stages. DKD: What is the USP of your company? Are the products made in India? AS: Our presence in this market for over three decades has helped to build a close and constant connect with the OEMs and end users. It enables us to better understand customer requirements. Flexibles products are not only manufactured but also designed in India, ensuring high quality import substitutes at affordable costs. Also, our pan-India after-sales service team provides prompt service. Needless to say, we work towards continual development and are an ISO 9001:2015 certified organization. DKD: Tell us about the newly launched ATEX certified static charge eliminators. AS: In gravure printing and coating machines, in particular, high levels of electrostatic charges are formed on the plastic film and paper. These electrostatic charges can cause sparks that are potentially hazardous and even disastrous. The only way to remove these static charges is through a process of ionization. Since ionization requires a high voltage for operation, these active static eliminators need to be certified for use in the solvent vapor-laden environment of a rotogravure printing or coating station.
Valence’s Valstat VR20X static eliminating bars are designed to efficiently neutralize electrostatic charges from fast-moving plastic films in explosion-prone environments. We are the first Indian manufacturing company to offer ATEX-certified static charge eliminating bars. A row of electrodes, provided along the active length of static eliminating bar, generates ions of both polarities, ensuring that positive and negative charges are quickly and effectively neutralized. These shock-less spark-free static charge eliminators are helpful in improving output quality and enhance productivity with fewer machine stoppages. Static eliminating bars are powered by high voltage AC power sources and are a compact, sturdy and efficient electrostatic charge removal system. DKD: What are your future plans in India? AS: The print and packaging industry in
India has started to mature, and needs more thoughtful and sophisticated engineering to reach higher quality and productivity. In addition, Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) concerns are getting more and more important for everyone. A.T.E. continues to hone its products and services as we work towards providing our customers with innovative and cost-effective solutions for all of these needs. We can see that flexo and digital printing will soon be the next big thing in the Indian print and packaging industry. The advancements we have made in the print control and vision systems group are part of this drive. As a conscious decision, in order to be future ready, we started the design and development activity for ATEX certified static eliminators, vision and defect detection products several years back. Now, we have launched and stabilized these products. We are also giving a major thrust to exports. z
z Films for luxury packaging Cosmo Films launches metalized velvet lamination film

osmo Films, a global leader in specialty films for flexible packaging, lamination and labeling applications as well as synthetic paper, recently launched a metalized velvet lamination film for luxury packaging segment. The newly developed film has been engineered to offer intense silver color along with rich velvet touch to the laminated paper/paperboard or package.
Silver color is not easy to handle especially when used as a background during printing. It takes longer to dry and also has a risk of ink set off during print stacking. Due to these challenges, printers usually avoid using silver as a background color. However, graphic art designers prefer silver background as it allows them to make attractive artworks facilitating use of many other shades and the impact it generates with gold foil stamping and UV spot coating. To bridge this gap, Cosmo Films introduced the metalized velvet touch film which is glue-

omexi, global leading supplier of solutions for the flexible packaging printing and converting sector, and Vishal Containers, a packaging solutions company in Gujarat, have strengthened their commercial relationship with the acquisition by the Indian company of a Comexi F2 MP, a hybrid flexo press prepared for the market trend of flexible packaging. This purchase represents a step forward for Comexi in its commitment to consolidate itself as a reference in the flexographic technology market, while for Vishal Containers it represents its first investment in flexographic presses, since until now they were gravure specialists.
Vishal Containers, which has several gravure presses, has decided to take the step to flexographic technology and has done so by betting for the first time on a hybrid Comexi press with which they will be able to print with solvent base, water base and electron beam technologies. This step allows Vishal Containers to adapt to the new
trend of the Indian market, which opts for flexographic technology to the detriment of gravure printing. With more than 30 years of experience, the main objective of Vishal Containers is to provide its customers with total packaging solutions under one roof. Located in an industrial area near Ahmedabad, one of its lines of work is the confectionery packaging material, among many others. The acquisition of the Comexi F2 MP hybrid represents for the Indian company its first commitment to a European press. “We are proud to be able to install a press with these characteristics in India,” explains Jordi Puig, technical director of the flexo business unit of Comexi, who adds that Vishal becomes “the first Indian company that has this technology, and the sixth in the world.” In this regard, Vishal Patel, director of Vishal Containers, expresses his satisfaction for being “pioneers in our country and betting on a sustainable technology that will bring added value to our products.” Fran Perez, India and Middle East area manager, says that “as a leading company of flexible packaging machinery, we are really satisfied to offer this disruptive technology which will be a turning point in the area.” z
Comexi discontinues gravure business After dedicating nearly a decade to commercializing gravure machinery, Comexi now plans to focus its efforts on flexo, offset, laminating, slitting and innovative sustainable solutions. z Ketone and toluene-free inks in India Flint Group increases prices for all packaging inks and coatings Anwesh Koley
T
he ink and coating industry faced raw material shortages, critical supply chain conditions and supply disruptions in Q3. Due to these continued cost burdens, Flint Group Packaging Inks in India has increased prices with immediate effect.
Unprecedented price inflation has been witnessed in resins, titanium dioxide, pigments and key solvents; all of these feedstocks affect the cost base of both solventbased and water-based inks and coatings. Resin prices have increased due to supply constraints and facility closures. Numerous pigment production facilities in China have reduced capacity; some have been ordered to close, in-line with the ‘Blue Skies’ initiative. Solvents are under pressure due to production outages, supply tightening and escalation in crude oil costs, all resulting in a finished product cost escalation between 11-17%. Rising material costs coupled with increased global trading challenges, currency fluctuations and economic challenges in some regions are presenting the industry with a complex and volatile cost landscape. Upal Roy, managing director, Flint Group India explains, “Despite our staunch efforts to mitigate these supply dynamics by deploying significant capital and internal resources to efficiency projects, the cost pressure remains relentless. Recent price increases have not been sufficient to offset the cost increase burden and Flint Group cannot continue to absorb the rising costs internally. The situation now necessitates that we pass some increases through the supply chain.” Roy adds, “Product quality and consistency are essential for our customers, which is why we will continue to prioritize efficiency improvements and the sourcing of high quality materials at a reasonable price.

lexFilms now has an e-commerce website of its own, with the launch of FLEX-BuzzR at the European trade exhibition FachPack 2018, Germany. The platform will give FlexFilms the leverage to offer customers in the European Union (EU) access to complete range of films produced at its Poland plant through the click of a mouse. The platform, which has a catchy tag-line – Shop at Ease, Shop When You Please – was introduced by Anantshree Chaturvedi, vice chairman and CEO of Flex Films International.
The online portal will help Flex Films augment its existing business, by throwing open a vast avenue of opportunities for customers. For example, customers in addition to being able to browse through the vast catalog of product offerings, will find useful product description, user manuals, and deals of the day offerings on the site. Like in any popular e-commerce site, the customer will be able to add products to cart and put orders in real time. What is interesting is that customers in addition to buying readily available rolls, also known as Quick Pick Order, will also be able to put requests for customized (or Made to Order) products through the website. Speaking to The Packman, Chaturvedi said, “I saw we are still doing film business the old way. People are faxing orders or putting orders through physical copies; and email probably is the only big difference. It confounded me as to why we were continuing to use these old methods, which are the source of errors and also are time consuming. Today’s generation is brought up on ecommerce sites like Amazon, eBay, Alibaba, etc., and are used to a seamless buying experience. So I decided we must also strive to create a similar online experience for our

customers - many of whom are millennials - wherein they can easily add a variable, pick and choose a film of the specification of their choice, and put on filters. The result is today we have categorized our entire offering into a sort of e-commerce basis. If a customer can’t find what they want, they can feed a customized order and enjoy a seamless buying experience.” FlexFilms is expecting to extend engagement with its customer base in EU through the platform, by fulfilling even last minute orders. Further, there are also plans to use the portal to make new product announcements, and for collaborating with stakeholders. Chaturvedi said that rapid technologi-
cal advancements have pushed countries to embrace the e-commerce model. Though brick-and-mortar model still sustains, given a chance packaging film owners would like to adopt the e-commerce model which gives them more leverage and a small staff to deal with. As for customers, everything is simply a click away, and they can shop at any time or day they wish. “Following the tenet of our mother brand, i.e., speed coupled with customer value creation, FLEX-BuzzR would enable us to maximize our operational efficiency and ensure better response-time for customers. Finally, the platform can be used as a marketing and communication tool to keep our customers posted on product developments,” he added. z THE PACKMAN | NOV-DEC 2018

ot on the heels of the hugely successful Labelexpo Americas 2018, which recently took place in Chicago, the 6th edition of Labelexpo India, the top label and package printing event in the region, is now just weeks away. The excitement is already building to what promises to be its largest show yet.
Labelexpo India 2018, which takes place every two years, is due to return to state-of-the-art venue India Expo Centre & Mart in Greater Noida (Delhi NCR) from 22-25 November, following the success of its inaugural 2016 event at the venue. The show continues to grow year on year – over 250 exhibitors from across the label and package printing industry are now on board for this year, which is a significant increase of 25% on the 2016 edition. Companies taking part include Avery Dennison, Bobst, Esko, HP, Hyden Packaging, Martin Automatic, Monotech Systems, Nilpeter, OMET, RK Label, Xeikon, and Zhejiang Weigang Machinery. The show is aimed at printers, designers, brand owners and industry suppliers, and brings the whole label and package printing industry supply chain together under one roof. This makes it the region’s key platform for businesses to showcase their latest machinery, innovations and products. Many Indian commercial offset printers are now looking to diversify into label and package printing, creating a huge appetite for innovation and technology. Added to this, there are few local manufacturers in India, and almost 50% of its GDP is from trade abroad. In short, this presents excellent potential for overseas business, and Labelexpo India is the ideal place to explore these exciting opportunities. This year’s theme for the show is appropriately “Experience the Fu-

ollowing a successful first Labelexpo India 2018 forum in Colombo, expectations were riding high for the Dhaka event and it clearly didn’t disappoint. Held on 8 September, this second forum laid out the red carpet to offset printers who were looking to diversify their businesses to label and package printing.
The first event of its kind in Bangladesh, the forum was organized by Labelexpo India in association with Bangladesh Mudran Shilpa Samity, and attended by some 200 dignitaries, including representatives from Avery Dennison, Flint Group and Nilpeter as well as members from the printing and packaging fraternity from Bangladesh. Labels making your own salad – you start with an empty bowl, and keep putting in whatever you want according to your requirement and taste preferences,” said Kapoor. “In contrast, offset presses are more like buying boxes from a shop which come with their own configuration.” Since a narrow web combi press is built from scratch as per customer requirements, Kapoor cautioned it is important for anyone who wants to enter the field to know about its working. “You have to be sure about what you need or expect to achieve with the press.” Nilpeter produces 120-140 presses each year, all custom-made to fit the needs of the individual customer. Dr. Sreenivas Goud, director – sales at Flint Group India, gave a presentation on how UV flexo ink is going to be the future. “UV Flexo is the fastest growing technology in narrow web printing segment as it offers reliable and consistent quality. With rapid advancement in technology of flexo presses, plates, doctor blade, and substrates, to name a few, narrow web printers are able to achieve quality similar to offset and excellent combination printing to produce world class labels and other packaging products,” said Goud. Goud also shared details about one of Flint’s key developments in UV flexo technology – Flexocure Force. “With the help
of Flexocure Force brand of UV flexo inks from Flint Group, one can achieve superb print performance on variety of substrates due to its high color strength and rheology profile suited to print longer run jobs. With excellent cure properties of inks, printers are able to print faster and improve their productivity,” explained Goud. Flint Group also offers a variety of products for screen, shrink sleeves and other flexible packaging applications including low-migration and award winning LED cure inks in UV flexo range, all of which will be on display at Labelexpo India 2018. G Sridhara, business manager – international and specialty business, South Asia, Avery Dennison India, said in his presentation that in Asia Pacific, the pressure sensitive label (PSL) growth is fastest in India at 8% CAGR with strong growth across most FMCG segments, and that many brands are shifting from glue applied labels to improve shelf appeal and optimize application performance. Sridhara said, “[This] forum in Dhaka provided a platform for sharing insights about the potential of the label industry and upcoming trends with industry partners and flexo and offset fraternity. It was a very good gathering of 200 plus printers who were keen to know about the developments
and our initiatives to address their issues. Thanks to the management of Bangladesh Mudran Shilpa Samity and their members who made this road show a big success.”
Question and answer session The event also featured a question and answer session, which gave the audience a chance to interact with industry veterans. One of the questions was directed at the representative from Flint Group, asking whether the company has any plans for setting up an ink plant in Bangladesh. In answer, Goud said, “What we see currently is that the market in Bangladesh is small but it is growing fast – so in future we might definitely think about setting up an ink plant here.”
The Bangladeshi perspective Hasina Newaaz of Bangladesh, vice chairman of Bangladesh Mudran Shilpa Samity, said, “Printing is a huge sector but unfortunately Bangladesh has neither been able to contribute nor exploit this sector much. Labelexpo India 2018 is a huge opportunity for the printers of the country to break the mould and take the industry ahead. When an event like Labelexpo is happening next door, we should visit and gain the maximum benefits out of it.” z

z An interview with Ranesh Bajaj of Vinsak India
Starting your label business...
A
graduate from Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh, Ranesh Bajaj joined his family business of spare part manufacturing, Creed Engineers, in 1994, and helped the company to diversify to trading in global equipment for the graphics industry. Today, his company represents some of the best-known names – ABG, Lombardi, Pantec, Schober and the in-house brand Vinsak to name a few. Bajaj, who is also a consultant in the packaging field with a specialty in packaging optimization and brand protection, spoke with The Packman recently. Here is a small excerpt from the interview: Mahan Hazarika (MH): How viable it is for a commercial/offset printer to diversify to label business? Ranesh Bajaj (RB): The label industry is growing at a rapid pace with double-digit growth over the past years and the trend will continue due to the high population of India and rise in demand of packaged goods. Even the new E-commerce and retail chains are coming with their own private labels for food and other products. When a commercial printer wants to diversify into the label business, it will give their company a boost because they are able to produce small to long-run jobs with ease, have good networking in the industry to fetch quality jobs and thirdly the margins are quite good in label printing for their flourishing growth. MH: What are the important aspects he should keep in mind while diversifying? RB: Well, the first thing to consider while diversifying is to know which segment to target while diversifying into labels. The label industry is huge and widely categorized into security printing jobs, label printing with top notch finishing for luxury, cosmetics and wine products, inkjet
Ranesh Bajaj. Photo: The Packman printing on labels and specialized labels like hanger labels, in-mould labels, shrink sleeve labels etc. The printing company can select their segment on basis of existing customers as well. When it is clear which segment of label industry one wants to target, based on it the company can select the right label printing and finishing machinery and can accordingly target customers. MH: Would you encourage someone who is not from the printing industry wanting to start a label company? RB: Why not, we all printers, suppliers and even the organization like ALPS, LMAI, IPAMA etc. wants the growth of the label industry. If someone wants to start a label company, we as Vinsak will support him with the required knowledge base, right machinery for his startup and provide the necessary service support system. Sometimes it is easier to write on a clean slate than to erase the old text and start again. MH: What are the challenges faced by an outsider (someone with no printing background) in starting a label company compared to an offset printer?
RB: Labels are partly to do with print and the rest to do with their functionality which is more of engineering than print. A label is used to convey the contents of the product as a part but in many cases has a functional role as well. This part of the work is more engineering than printing and in these cases, a new company will not be at a disadvantage against a commercial printer. Also in labels, print technologies being used are flexo and digital primarily and hence the offset technology of commercial printers may not add much value. MH: What kind of working capital someone new to the printing business should have to start his own label company? RB: Based on the above machine recommendation, if the new printer wants to purchase a machine with top-notch quality and want to cater to a large customer base, then the ideal investment for starting a profit-generating label business is around 50 to 70 million rupees. MH: Would you recommend digital label printing to someone who is new to the printing industry but wants to start his label business? RB: If the new printer wants to perform only small print jobs, then definitely we will recommend him to go for digital printing. But if he wants to perform long-run jobs, then digital will be expensive. The printer should go for either flexo or offset press. The flexo and offset presses are best suitable for medium to long run jobs and ideal for highquality finishing and brand protection features which will prove to be very expensive when done with digital. In the end, it is individual decision what he thinks is the best suitable for his business, be it conventional presses or digital press. z THE PACKMAN | NOV-DEC 2018

Mudrika Labels was established in 1976 in Mumbai by Desai, his brother Vipul and cousin Sandip. Besides producing labels, the Desai brothers operate an offset-based corrugation unit in Daman and Bhillad; a packaging plant in Vasai; a label-stock material plant; and a joint venture with a South Korean partner for manufacturing heat transfer films, decals and in-mould labels. Before finalizing the Labelmaster, Desai said, he evaluated few options from other flexo press manufacturers that offer equivalent or larger width presses. “We have a battery of Gallus’ presses in our plant, and
Vipul Desai and Manish Desai of Mudrika Labels continuing with them made sense, because service is an important factor when it comes to overall equipment effectiveness.”
The other factors were the speed and the ability of the Labelmaster to print on a wide range of substrates like self-adhesive label, cardboard, PE, PP, aluminium foil and tube laminate, among others. “We were also impressed by the Gallus technology which enabled reproduction of exact spot colous. Today’s customers are most demanding. Once a job is approved, it is imperative that we produce labels exactly the way the brands want it. Consistency becomes prime.” And while 200 metre per minute speed was one of the factors, Desai said, even at 130 metre per minute, he will be able to achieve a 30% gain in productivity. z – Pranay Mathur

aetwyler SwissTec AG, a global leader of coated and uncoated, precision doctor blades, will be present at the upcoming Labelexpo 2018 at Greater Noida, Delhi NCR through its Indian subsidiary, Daetwyler SwissTec India, and will unveil latest additions to its broad product range MDC Gamutstar suited for Extended Color Gamut and MDC Pearlstar provided with a fluid repellent coating in addition to presence of its proven doctor blades like MDC Longlife, MDC Ibostar, MDC Soft, MDC Standard doctor blades. The company will be present at Hall 3 Stand H5.
MDC Gamutstar Doctor Blade is a new coated quality provided with a durable base coating designed to extend blade life, reduce anilox scoring, while providing corrosion protection and a very clean wipe. This is specifically suited when blade changes need to be predetermined such as it is the case with Extended Color Gamut. Cleanest possible wipe over the entire blade life means no change in tonal values of print and it is very gentle on anilox due to its additional soft coating. This blade reduce the friction at contact zone, increases life of anilox roller or chrome cylinder. MDC Gamutstar Doctor Blade is best where aggressive pigment particles are present in the ink. In addition, this allows the blades changes to occur at specific times, eliminating unnecessary downtime. Especially designed for
long print runs and multiple jobs. Gamutstar is available with radius or lamella type tips, in widths of 10 mm – 60 mm and thicknesses of 0.15 mm, 0.20 mm and 0.25 mm.
New fluid-repellent coating MDC Pearlstar Doctor Blade The new MDC Pearlstar doctor blade for flexo and gravure printing and coating applications. It offers the promising opportunity, to reduce and even completely avoid the adhesion of colours, paints or adhesives during printing and lamination. Pearlstar is provided with a new propri-
etary ink repellent coating. This significantly contributes to the reduction of build-up of inks, varnishes, cold seal adhesives and other transfer media onto the doctor blade. Such a performance enhancing measure results in considerably fewer drag outs and streaks in the printed image and also offers corrosion protection. This repelling property added together with low friction values make it ideal for customers experiencing back doctoring issues. Pearlstar is available in lamella/radius tips with widths of 10 mm – 60 mm and thicknesses of 0.15 mm, 0.20 mm and 0.25 mm. z

z A unique platform to buy and sell unused raw material LMAI Advantage goes live
L
abel Manufacturers Association of India’s (LMAI) online portal LMAI Advantage, announced in the month of March 2018, is now up and running. Speaking of the new portal, Kuldip Goel, LMAI president, said that it is designed to help LMAI members to list, buy and sell consumables and label-stock lying idle with them. Members wishing to sell their old machines can also list the details on the portal.
“The portal will allow LMAI members to sell online their unused raw materials to fellow members. Many label printers generate left out/unused raw material which eventually becomes obsolete over time as they come with shelf life. As per our research, material worth more than 10 crore expires unused at label converters end in India every month. So the portal will be useful for the entire label industry,” Goel informed. Label printers frequently face the problem of huge pileup of label-stock that they can’t use directly due to mismatch between side slit and the decale. LMAI Advantage is populated with the product codes of all raw materials by major

players like Avery Dennison, UPM, SMI and others. To register a raw material on the portal, the seller has to enter three important details – product code of the raw material lying idle with him/her, manufacturing date, and width and length of the material. Speaking of the user friendliness of the portal, Goel said that a user can input as many as 20 products in a matter of just 5 to 10 minutes. The seller data which is stored in the database can be accessed and searched by other members simply by logging into their account in the portal. All listed data in the portal is required to be validated every month. Goel informed that LMAI members don’t have to pay any fee or commission to enjoy the benefits offered by the portal. “We are just a platform to help the two parties (buyer and seller) meet online. In the end, it’s their prerogative how to go ahead with the deal.” To meet the expenses of running the portal, revenue is generated through online advertisement. He added, “While the cost to our association is nil, everybody benefits out of it.”
Kuldip Goel, LMAI president. Photo: The Packman Goel sounded optimistic that if the portal can contribute to recycling of even 30 to 40% of the unused materials lying idle with converters, it would bring great financial relief to label converters which will make them more competitive. “It is not only a cost to the industry or the converter when you scrap such raw materials, but it also poses environmental threats. And if you see, around 70 to 80% of these raw material are imported. So a lot of foreign currency is involved as well,” he concluded. z – Mahan Hazarika

z Packaging inks
A new dimension in food safety Jatin Takkar
P
ackaging is an essential tool to make products standout from the competition. Beyond the shelf appeal, packaging also provides protection to the contents from physical, chemical and microbiological hazards. However, a lesser known fact is that the same packaging material could also be a source of chemical contaminants and hence may impact food safety as well as food quality. Among the different components of packaging material, packaging inks play a critical role as they might hamper product and consumer safety. Each packaging ink is a mixture of different chemicals and some of these chemicals might be harmful with the potential to migrate to the food stuff when getting in contact. In terms of risk, the chemicals could be toxic, carcinogenic, mutagenic, repro-toxic and even endocrine disruptors.
The chemical contaminants from the packaging inks can get transferred to the foodstuff by a process called migration. Over the last two decades, a number of scientific papers have been published, revealing the migration potential of substances from the printed matter. However, the first big scandal that brought the subject alive was about the findings of isopropyl thioxanthone (ITX, a low molecular photo initiator used in UV inks) in baby milk and other liquid foodstuffs all over Europe, resulting in a product recall in the year 2005. The food scandal alerted the packaging chain about the linkage between packaging inks and food safety. As a consequence, the authorities issued strict regulations for the application of printing inks as well as general food control measures.
46
THE PACKMAN | NOV-DEC 2018
www.thepack man.in
Food safety and migration Migration can be described as a transfer of chemical contaminants from the food packaging material to the food, thereby making it unsafe. Migrants are substances which, due to their chemical characteristics and molecular size, move from a printed layer into the packed food.
There are different types of migration
1) Set-off migration Migrations can happen from one layer to another, such as a surface printed layer to the non-printed food-contact surface which is later on brought into contact with food. If these are in direct or close contact, like in a reel or a stack after printing, set-off migration can easily occur due to the pressure existing in the reel or stack. 2) Diffusion migration Small and mobile molecules can easily penetrate into, and diffuse across packaging material layers. This can occur even if the printed material has not yet been converted into a food package and filled with food, or later on when the printed package is filled with food and the food starts to ‘extract’ the migrants from the packaging material. 3) Gas-phase migration Migration can also happen from a cardboard (the ‘releasing reservoir’) via the gas phase within the pack, to end up in food which acts as ‘recipient reservoir’ (gas phase migration). This can, for example, occur with migrants like mineral oils or some UV photo-initiators that might not be generally known as being volatile, such as organic solvents. This process of migration is influenced by several factors like physico-chemical properties of the migrant, of packaging material and of the food product; storage time and temperature; and size of packaging in proportion to foodstuff volume.
Concept of safe, compliant and migration optimized inks Compliance in packaging safety needs to be based on these three pillars: 1. Legal requirements 2. Brand owner requirements 3. Self-commitments Each supply chain partner (such as ink manufacturer, adhesive manufacturer, substrate manufacturer etc.) needs to be aware of the legal requirements (relevant for a particular region) for their component of the packaging structure and must build systematic processes to ensure delivery of consistent and safe products. If the packaging material needs to be exported, legal requirements of the importing country must also be given due consideration. Brand owners with their global footprint sometimes have their own specific requirements for packaging safety beyond the legal requirements of the countries (especially, developing countries like India). Each supply chain partner needs to make themselves aware of such requirements and upgrade their products to comply with such norms, in order to offer same level of consumer safety across all regions. Each supply chain partner is responsible for their own products and formulations. Hence, it becomes the ethical responsibility of supply chain partner to deliver safe products (with only safe chemicals in their formulations) and also update the authorities and brand owners on such initiatives to benefit the society at large. Compliance can never be achieved through an isolated approach since each packaging structure is a mixture of different components (such as substrate, ink, varnishes etc.) and hence there should be an open and transparent communication across the supply chain on the requirements as well as on the risk assessment of the individual components of the packag-
In-Depth Article ing structure. It is the responsibility of the brand owner (also referred as food business operator) to update the entire supply chain on the brand owner requirements as well as legal requirements. It is to be highlighted that packaging supply chain partners do not come under the scope of FSSAI and hence food business operators have the onus to update the packaging supply chain on the same. Hence, logically a safe ink (or compliant ink or migration optimized inks) should satisfy the applicable legal and brand owner requirements as well as self-commitments.
Migration optimized inks – the future In the Indian market, there is a demand forthe so- called NT (non-toluene) inks, NTNK (non- toluene non ketone) inks, Mineral oil free inks etc. However, safe inks should not be misled with such terminology adopted by the market, as such inks may not be actually safe. Each printing ink consists of four general components: binder/resin, solvent, additives and pigment/colorant. By excluding a solvent like toluene, ketone, mineral oils etc., one cannot assume and be assured that the inks are safe. Safe inks (or migration optimized inks) are inks with careful selection of raw materials in all four categories so that none of the component of the printing ink formulations impact consumer safety. Hence, next time you look for safe inks, ask for migration optimized inks.
Good manufacturing practices Packaging materials and articles shall be manufactured in compliance with good manufacturing practice (GMP) so that, under normal or foreseeable conditions of use, they do not transfer their constituents to food in quantities which could endanger human health; or bring about an unacceptable change in the composition of the food; or bring about a deterioration in the organoleptic characteristics. Good manufacturing practices should be exercised across the supply chain if packaging safety needs to be ensured. There are several parameters and conditions that need to be controlled at converters shop floor to make sure that the final intended article is safe. Even if you have
procured the safe raw materials (such as substrate, inks, adhesives etc.), if you do not process them in the right manner, the final intended article would never be food safe. For example, in case of solvent-based inks, solvent drying is an essential part of manufacturing process of the final packaging material, which is carried out at the converter’s end. In case, solvent drying is not handled appropriately at the converter shop floor, retained solvent in the final packaging material can migrate into the product thereby not only endangering human health but also impacting the organoleptic properties of the product. Converters also need to ensure that cross-contamination at the facility is well taken care of and there are adequate validated controls to ensure that.
Regulatory update There is a lot of scientific literature available on packaging contaminants as well as packaging safety. The subject of packaging safety is quite evolved in developed countries. However, in India packaging contaminants and packaging safety are also being widely discussed now. In 2016, the Indian Express reported presence of toxins in PET bottles of five soft drink brands. FSSAI also recognized the threat of packaging inks and issued a nation-wide advisory to stop using newspapers for wrapping food items, specifically highlighting the impact of printing inks on consumer health. FSSAI is now revising the norms of packaging safety and has released a draft notification – ‘Food Safety and Standards (Packaging) Regulation, 2018.’ The standard is much more evolved over the previous version and has brought in more components in the packaging structure under the regulations. It now also regulates aluminum, glass, paper and printing inks to just mention a few. The upgraded standard also gives a list of suggestive packaging material for different product categories. FSSAI, in the released draft, mandates the printing inks to conform to the IS 15495. The IS 15495 standard is primarily based on a negative list principle and prescribes requirements under different categories of packaging material – external packaging, immediate food packaging, direct food contact and disposables.
