Industry puts plastics waste recycling on priority list
T
he recycling pavilion at IndiaPlast 2019 was a big hit among the visitors. Entrepreneurs and businessmen from across the country had set up stalls at this pavilion to promote various ways of plastics waste management. A multi-layer plastics waste management machine was launched by Uflex on Day 1 of the exhibition that took place in Greater Noida. The machine recycles multi-layer plastics waste into granules which can be further used for making plastic moulds. A similar machine was put up at the pavilion by Deshmukh Research Centre. A space-saving machine, it recycles domestic waste and can be used to make moulds for bricks, tree guards, road dividers, paving blocks, among many others. It is a small machine which can be used in individual households or apartments with the soul purpose to encourage individuals to recycle domestic waste themselves. Another new initiative called Recykal focuses on technology in the field of waste management. It is India’s first integrated digital platform for efficient waste management. Recykal and its subsidiary app Uzed connects all stakeholders, such as creators of waste to recyclers. While Recykal is tailor-made for industrial houses and the government, Uzed caters to individuals and residential users. The company also incentivises the individuals who contribute towards waste collection. The app also includes a dashboard which provides information on how and where the materials are being reused, recycled, composted or disposed-off. With the amount of waste that India generates, such innovations will go a long way in the field of waste management. Not only that, when there is a complete solution for the waste plastics, the plastics demand is bound to grow. These recyclability solutions will encourage people to use more plastic-based materials which in turn will help increase the demand of flexible packaging. The cover story in this issue highlights Uflex’s commitment towards a greener future through economically viable solutions for handling plastic waste in the society. In addition to the recycling machine, Uflex has also recently commissioned a new pyrolysis plant at its packaging division in Noida. The first ever pyrolysis process plant in North India, the new plant will not only protect the environment by converting plastic wastes into energy but also nurture a healthier tomorrow. Roorkee-based Osho Flexibles organized an Open House in February 2019 inviting dignitaries from the packaging industry to see its new flexible packaging plant. Of the more than a dozen equipment and machines installed at the plant, the blown film lines installed by Rajoo Engineers and the two CI flexo presses from W&H and Carraro attracted great attention from the visitors. Osho has also set up a chemical recycling plant from Ofru at its premises. Also in this edition: Comprehensive review articles from the two recently concluded events – PrintPack India 2019 and IndiaPlast 2019. – Mahan Hazarika, Editor, editor@thepackman.in

z New easy to use and convenient meal solutions Anthem Benelux design transparent authenticity for Knorr
G
lobal creative agency Anthem Worldwide has designed a new range of 100% natural soups for Unilever’s Knorr. The new range includes four variants (tomato, pumpkin, vegetable and zucchini) and has been launched across France, Spain, Italy, Belgium, Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
The new design for Knorr is bold, iconic and beautiful – allowing the brand to surprise and delight consumers with new easy to use and convenient meal solutions The ambient soup supermarket aisle’s across mainland Europe are a sea of sameness. In France specifically, the aisle is a consistent wave of duplicates – both in terms of format (brick tetra packs) and design (brand identity on top, product shot in the same style below). Knorr’s mission was to disrupt this swathe of uniformity with a new range of 100% natural ambient soups using simple ingredients to be packaged in glass bottles. Despite the more premium price point, the new range design needed to be family friendly. Brand recognition needed to remain strong and range navigation easy. Moving into glass bottles would also allow the brand to contribute to Unilever’s sustainability mission and have new conversations with existing and new consumers around ‘healthy you, healthy planet. Sara Jones, design director at Anthem

Benelux, said, “It was important to create a packaging design that mirrored the simplicity of the recipes and one that would support the naturalness of the products. Our design is clean and uncluttered to both support the product message and also achieve stand out on shelf. This was a huge step for Knorr but by giving the brand identity space on pack we were able to maintain strong recognition.” The choice of illustration style further supports the simple naturalness of the products – it’s wholesome yet vibrant, modest and beautiful. Taking inspiration from the chilled juice category, Anthem Benelux used a shrink sleeve to amplify freshness cues – using the language of another category in both format and printing techniques to innovate
and inspire change within a traditional one. The smart integration of the illustrations with the transparent windows brings a new level of authenticity to the products, used on both front and back of pack. Marie Leroy, Knorr Soups brand manager at Unilever, said, “Working with Anthem helped us tap into new ways of thinking and approaching design – what it means and how it’s perceived by consumers. We wanted to really revolutionize the way Knorr communicates on pack without losing recognition, focused on communicating naturalness and freshness which consumers are really searching for. The new designs hit all our objectives – achieving fantastic stand-out, especially in France.” z

T
equila flavored beer brand Desperados has rolled out a new brand and bottle redesign. The new identity embodies the festivity, boldness and spontaneity of the brand, with its iconic agave symbol and bright brand colors dialed up to deliver increased visibility and stand out on shelves.
The bottle design changes will also result in an overall reduction of over 18,000 tons of CO2 (equivalent to the average annual CO2 emissions of 3,600 people globally. The reduction is part of Heineken’s ‘Drop the C’ programme, which targets an 80% reduction in carbon emissions by 2030. This latest design evolution seeks to continue the brand growth, as well as enhancing visibility and range navigation, resulting in a significant increase in purchase intent to further help retailers. “The new brand design reflects the fes-
tive personality, energy and distinctiveness, that embodies Desperados’ philosophy of “We Are The Party”, explains Izabela Glodek, brand director of Desperados. “As part of our wider sustainability plans, becoming more environmentally-friendly is something we strive for as a brand that always looks to rewrite the rules.” z

The FDA clearance confirms that GEA’s ABF 1.2 technology ensures maximum sterilization efficiency and reliability during every step of sensitive beverage bottling. Thanks to the microbiological isolator extended also to the blower module, GEA ABF 1.2 aseptically blows preforms that have
been previously sterilized with hydrogen peroxide vapor (VHP), treating simultaneously their inner and outer surfaces. The result is a single step preform sterilization process that grants a 100% process treatment monitoring and requires no rinsing water and significantly low chemical consumption. With ABF 1.2, which features continuous monitoring of each sterilization process parameter as fully automated operation cycles, the risk of recontamination of any sensitive drinks during bottling is erased. z

The bottle is produced with an aseptic line supplied by GEA, which includes a GEA ABF 1.2 system The packaging design meets the brand’s two main requirements – coherency with the existing product portfolio and functionality. The first requirement was met by creating a simple shape, by choosing white to color the preform, which is also useful to protect the bottle’s contents, and by using a full-sleeve to give the brand great visibility, as is also the case for the cardboard packaging and single packs already on the market. With regard to functionality, the large 38 mm mouthpiece allows the bottle to be quickly used on-the-go in a practical way, making it perfect if you don’t have much time and when you don’t have access to a kitchen to prepare a healthy and wellbalanced meal.

vailable exclusively in Whole Foods before rolling out more widely across the UK, the peanut-focused snack bars are available in three flavors – Peanut Butter and Dark Chocolate, Raisin and Dark Chocolate, and Coconut.
After identifying an opportunity for a brand that stays true to a single core ingredient, B&B studio created a product strategy, visual and verbal identity for POP that celebrates the ‘Power of Peanuts’. At the core of the brand is a mission to shake up the snacking category, championing the humble peanut and its power to do good – for the body, the planet and for people in need. B&B has interwoven this mission into every touch-point of the brand’s visual and verbal identity, with brightly-hued packaging that is bursting with dynamic optimism and purpose to highlight the nutritional benefits of the core ingredients within each bar. Shaun Bowen, creative partner at B&B studio, says, “We spotted an opportunity for POP to focus on a single concept – peanutbased products – that would carve out a unique platform in a very competitive category. This enables POP to really celebrate and elevate the modest peanut, championing its superpowers.”
Peanut-based snacking brand POP has launched in the UK with new brand creation by branding agency B&B studio “Every element of the visual and verbal identity embodies this message, showcasing the core product attributes and brand values in a way that feels celebratory, not worthy. The vibrant visual identity has been designed with a full, three-dimensional impact, representative of the abundance of the peanut and the small but mighty POP bars.” Katja Thrane, POP co-founder, said, “B&B captured the product attributes brilliantly in our new brand identity, with an eyecatching design that feels authentic. From the peanut incorporated into the ‘O’ of our brand name to a natural tone of voice, B&B kept our values at the heart of the brand and delivered a striking identity that expresses who we are and what we stand for.” z

odak has announced the introduction of the new Kodak PROSPER Plus Imprinting Solutions for the packaging industry. These solutions include four new imprinting components as well as food safe packaging inks and pre-coatings for folding cartons, food wraps, paper cups and plates, and ream wraps. The new PROSPER Plus models will expand the capabilities for printers to leverage continuous inkjet as a complimentary capability to the Kodak PROSPER 6000S Simplex Press and the Uteco SAPPHIRE EVO (flexible substrates) Web Fed Solution.
The PROSPER Plus Imprinting Solution is the newest Kodak Stream Inkjet Technology component product line, developed based on Kodak PROSPER S-Series Imprinting Systems, which is designed for packaging and product decoration applications. The four hardware products will include two narrow formats and two wider format models which will either print at speeds up to 260 mpm (850 fpm) or 600 mpm (2000 fpm) maximum. The narrow format design is a 105 mm (4.13 inches) single jetting module, perfect for imprinting barcodes, QR codes, promotional contest information or small format designs in either monochrome or 4-color output. The wider format design is 210 mm (8.26 inches) dual stitched products which is ideal for corrugated, folding carton and label packaging applications that require full page printing or dynamic layouts. These components are capable of being mounted in-line with offset, flexo, or gravure presses, from Uteco or other equipment providers, or could be implemented in finishing lines such as folding/gluing systems providing the flexibility for digital to be incorporated throughout various existing printing operations. PROSPER Plus models feature new print modes with smaller drop size and higher resolution for faster drying and better quality.
Kodak’s water-based inks are customer friendly and have passed US and European certifications for food safety, direct skin contact, and food service products. First demonstrated at drupa 2016 alongside Kodak’s expanded gamut ink set, Kodak’s Digital Varnish for packaging applications offers a unique combination of gloss and durability enhancement on folding cartons and related applications. This odorless, water-based digital varnish is formulated for indirect food contact compliance and is free of VOCs, mineral oils, and any unreacted UV-curable components. The Creative Freedom campaign is designed to educate and promote the use of digital printing in packaging applications. Printers and converters need flexibility and efficient production for shorter runs with economic and in-line and nearline technology implementation. Brands and creative agencies need ‘Greener products’, creative flexibility, and the ability to quickly drive ideas to market with design freedom. Kodak’s portfolio provides a combination of strong economics and design flexibility using the widest variety of substrates, without creative compromise. Additionally, Kodak has been working in close collaboration with industry leaders including Michelman to test compatibility of Kodak’s inks and technologies with various substrates such as PET, Nylon and polypropylene. The company has worked to pre-qualify existing flexible packaging solutions from key leading suppliers to assure the compatibility with commercially available adhesives, substrates, primer, Kodak’s inkjet inks, and flexo overvarnish and overprint. The combination of all these technologies will be delivered by the Uteco Sapphire EVO press using Kodak Stream Inkjet Technology, which will deliver solutions both for surface printing and reverse printing with lamination. The Sapphire EVO will provide brands and converters the ability to

z Uflex’s new MLP recycling machine and pyrolysis plant
With plastics recycling in place, the demand Mahan Hazarika
A
t the Green Pavilion of IndiaPlast 2019, Uflex presented live demos of its new recycling machine. The machine recycles multilayered packaging (MLP) waste into pellets through a fairly simple method. Some useful industrial and household products – made out of pellets – like benches, ladder etc. were also being showcased at the Green Pavilion.
Multi-layered packaging, as we all know, is difficult to recycle because the polymers involved in different layers have different melting points. The challenge is to bring these multi layers to a homogeneous form which can be melted homogeneously to flow together and form recyclable pallets. Uflex has partnered with a company to develop a compatibilizer which can bring all these material to a coupling bond so that they can be melted on a single temperature. Addressing the media at the inaugural ceremony at IndiaPlast 2019, Ashok Chaturvedi, CMD of Uflex emphasized on the importance of plastics and its recycling in India. He said that the only alternative available as of now for plastic is wood. However, with the kind of requirement that exists, wood will not be a viable solution as all trees will have to be cut resulting shaving the green off our planet. Chaturvedi said, “People are of the perception that plastics are not recyclable. It is for the visitors to witness themselves the possibilities of recycling plastics and converting it into something useful at the Green Pavilion. The best part is that this machine does not emanate any toxins. Some of the delegates that have visited the Green Pavilion are amazed by the results. There is another added feature as well. After recycling the plastic, it can be reused in 10,000 different ways like paver tiles, roads, road

Ashok Chaturvedi, CMD of Uflex, at IndiaPlast 2019. Photo: The Packman dividers, signboards, cupboard, outdoor furniture and many more. I want to emphasize that it is possible to recycle and reuse the recycled plastic time and again. Flexible packaging is the ideal solution for packag-
ing currently and the products packed in it are usable only because of the barrier properties that protect the food from moisture and oxygen which may destroy the food. The packaging helps save all the essential properties of the edible product in it.” Chaturvedi is confident that demand for flexible packaging will grow further in the coming years. He said, “When there is a complete solution for the waste plastics, the demand is bound to grow. This particular solution of recyclability will encourage people to use more plastic-based materials. I also think that this is the cheapest and best possible option available in the market for packaging edible items. This will definitely help increase the demand of flexible packaging.” Chaturvedi added that with the support of the government and local authorities, the company will look at setting up projects for recyclability of post-consumer waste in the near future, that will also generate employment to rag-pickers. He also offered tech-

is bound to grow – Ashok Chaturvedi nology support to the industry to set up similar solutions for waste management.
New pyrolysis plant in Noida Uflex recently commissioned its new pyrolysis plant at its packaging division in Noida. The first ever pyrolysis process plant in North India, the new pant will not only protect the environment by converting plastic wastes into energy but also nurture a healthier tomorrow. The pyrolysis plant once again reaffirms Uflex’s commitment towards a greener future through economically viable solutions for handling plastic waste in the society. Pyrolysis process works as a sustainable waste to energy technology with an ability to handle any plastic waste. At its pyrolysis plant, Uflex converts about six tonnes of discarded waste material generated everyday from printing, unused trim, laminates, tubes and other unprocessed material into liquid fuel, hydrocarbon gas and carbon black which is further utilized in its manufacturing processes. “After the Government’s Plastic Waste Management Rules, 2016, which call for comprehensive overhauling of plastic waste management systems, we started our own recycling plant. However, there were certain wastes which could not be recycled. Event if you recycle it, you cannot produce any usable products. So, we now put those waste into the pyrolysis process and produce usable products – light distillate oil (LDO), hydrocarbon gas and carbon black,” said SS Parmar, senior vice president, Energy Group, Uflex. Uflex consumes nearly one lac liters of fuel daily to run its generators, industrial boilers and furnaces at its Noida plants. “The new pyrolysis plant generates nearly 2,000 liters of fuel daily which is just a small fraction of what our plants actually require. But that doesn’t dissuade us from running the pyrolysis plant because our primary goal is to have a process in place for effective

management of the waste that otherwise cannot be recycled,” said Parmar. In this process, the polymer waste stored in the raw material facility is taken to a shredder which is cut into smaller pieces and then fed into the air lock feeding system. The waste material is chemically decomposed at elevated temperatures in the absence of oxygen. This reaction takes place inside the pyrolysis reactor and occurs at temperatures ranging from 430 to 500 degree Celsius. Thereafter, the pyrolysis reactor converts the polymer waste into pyrolysis oil, hydrocarbon gas and carbon black powder in the ratio 45:45:10 respectively. Mixture of pyrolysis oil vapor and hydrocarbon gas exits the pyrolysis reactor and is subjected to fractional condensation to get separate fraction of hydrocarbon gas, pyrolysis wax and pyrolysis oil. Pyrolysis wax is fed into the reactor for further reprocessing. “While we use the oil to run our indus-
trial boilers, 75% of the hydrocarbon gas produced in the process is used for running the boilers within the pyrolysis plant for heating the plastic waste. The remaining gas is used for the multi stage evaporation plant within our premises. This is basically to vaporize the dirty water – high total dissolved solids (TDS) – generated by effluent treatment plant, which comes out of the RO plant where you get 90% good water and 10% rejected water. Since throwing away of this rejected water is not safe, it needs to be vaporized. Some residues may still exist which can be used in landfills,” explained Parmar. “Carbon black powder is cooled and packed into bags for further use as solid fuel. It has a calorific value similar to coal. One may burn it in PET coke fired steam boilers, firewood boilers or other similar boilers just like any other solid fuel,” concluded Parmar. z THE PACKMAN | Mar-Apr 2019

flex’s Engineering Business showcased four machines at the 5-day exhibition, IndiaPlast 2019, held at IndiaExpo Centre in Greater Noida from 28 February 2019 to 4 March 2019. The first is the CI flexo press, a top-of-the-line machine at speeds up to 400 meter per minute. It’s an upgraded model – ideal replacement for imported machines, according to the company. The second machine is the extrusion coating and lamination machine, which again is a 400 meter per minute machine. The other machines displayed at the show are solvent-less laminator and plastic waste recycling machine. CI flexo press
The CI flexo press displayed by Uflex at IndiaPlast 2019 has high automation level in the form of sleeves and anilox removal system. The press is an upgraded version of its earlier models. “The press runs at speeds up to 400 meter per minute and all its drives, PLCs and complete electronics system are sourced from a single manufacturer. This gives customers the advantage to look at a single window for any type of problems. Further, these systems are very well synchronized since they are from a single brand,” said Ajay Tandon, president and chief executive officer, Engineering Business at Uflex Limited. The 120-mm thick side frames of the press provides stability while running and

The press is easy to operate, and offers very fast registration. Users can learn to run the machine under a very short learning curve,” said Tandon. Uflexo Elisa is the resultant of a technology transfer agreement that took place during drupa 2016 between Uflex and Italy-based Comiflex SRL to manufacture CI Flexo printing presses in India. “The project of CI flexo was started by us several years ago. We had scouted around the world for a proper technology considering
the needs of the Indian market as well as the latest possible features at an Indian cost of manufacturing. This is how we came across Comiflex. We decided to bring a technology which is latest in features where operator intervention is bare minimum. In other words, the automation level has to be high. We decided this and brought a suitable technology to India where not only the compensations for plates and analogs can be given in an auto mode but same can be set through for the washing and inking system, and for the chamber doctor blades. Job change over time has been reduced to a matter of minutes against hours. These are

certain achievements which make the press highly operator friendly,” said Sanjay Sabharwal, executive vice president, Engineering Business, Uflex Limited.
Extrusion coating and lamination machine Engineering Business of Uflex presented its top-of-the-line extrusion coating and lamination machine EX LAM 400 at the event. With a sturdy, heavy structure to handle thick and thin laminates, EX LAM 400 has been designed with line speed of 400 meters per minute. With significant improvements made against its older variants, the modified machine with European designed features have especially been made suitable to the Indian conditions. “This is a product which the Indian market needed for a long time. With the support of our management, when we decided to give this product to the Indian market, we became the proud first company to launch it. We have been able to shift buyers, where they had no choice but to buy an imported machine, to an Indian extrusion coating and lamination machine. People have been trying to use polymer for lamination instead of adhesives for several reason including cost. So there has been a demand for more and more extrusion coating lamination in the market. We have already sold about six machines since its launch at PlastIndia 2018 about a year ago. Three more machines are on the shop floor while a few more are in the pipeline,” said Sabharwal.
Solvent-less laminator The third machine that was on display at IndiaPlast 2019 was the solvent-less laminator, Super-S-1300. “We have been making this machine for last 15 years. The machine displayed here is again with certain improvements to give value to our customers,” said Tandon. Super-S-1300 has added features of running metalized structures up to a speed of 300 meters per minute, whereas all other structures can be run up to a speed of 450 meters per minute. The machine offers micro-

t IndiaPlast 2019, Uflex’s Chemical Business highlighted its innovations in inks, coatings and adhesives. “Our focus is to help our customers get value for money in terms of reducing ink gsm, solvent, and overall consumption of inks,” said Rajesh Srivastava.
At the event, Chemical Business also launched one of the universal solvent-free adhesives, 777 A/C. “It is a unique and universal product that offers excellent performance on various substrates including plastics. The adhesive has an exceptional compatibility with NC-PU inks when mixed in the ratio of 1:1. With this adhesive, the advantage to a converter is that there is no different mixing ratio for a metallized film or a PE film,” said Srivastava. “We have also launched a PU ink which has high strength and low viscosity. The ink reduces solvent consumption to a drastic level.” Meanwhile, the Chemical Business also showcased an environment friendly high-speed water-based sheetfed UV ink suitable for commercial and nonfood packaging applications. lmost a year after announcing that it would manufacture CI flexo presses at its Kohlapur plant in India, Manugraph finally launched its first India-made CI flexo press at the IndiaPlast 2019 exhibition. Running at speeds up to 350 meter per minute, the 8-color Manuflex 1308-350 gearless CI flexo press piqued huge interest and excitement among visitors at the exhibition.
To manufacture CI flexo presses in India, Manugraph has entered into a strategic alliance with Italy-based CI flexo press manufacturer Carraro. The core of the collaboration is technology transfer by Carraro to build high-quality CI flexo presses in India. Under the collaboration, Manugraph gets the drawings, know-hows and training from Carraro. A pioneer in making flexo presses, Carraro has been in the CI flexo business since the early 1950s. In fact, it was the first Italian manufacturer of flexographic printing technology. Established in 1972, Manugraph India is well known for its web offset newspaper and book printing presses. The company has driven the growth of quality newspaper printing in India through technological advancements, collaborating with the very best globally, and continuously innovating and delivering cutting-edge printing solutions to customers worldwide. Manuflex CI flexo press is manufactured at Manugraph’s sprawling state-of-the art facility in Kolhapur, which is spread over 1,38,000 square meter. The factory follows a strict quality management system in accordance with ISO 9001:2008 standards. The scope of the quality management system covers

design, development, manufacturing, installation, commissioning and servicing. Pradeep Shah, managing director, Manugraph India, said, “We are planning to roll out 4 to 5 CI flexo presses by March 2020. We already have orders for two presses.” Shah shared that the company has a dedicated team of Indian engineers fully trained at the Carraro’s Italy factory in building mechanical units, electrical operations, and servicing and maintenance of the press. “This will give Indian customers the added advantage of prompt and timely local service support,” he added. “The Indian CI flexo market, which is predominantly ruled by European machines, will now have the advantage of buying an India-made machine of European standard. If you see the print quality of Manuflex, it is at par with any European machines. In addition, customers now can save on valuable foreign exchange and import costs as they can now own a highly configured European standard CI flexo press right in India,” said Shah. The Manuflex CI flexo presses will be
marketed by Multigraph Machinery, which is the agency for Manugraph. Speaking about the Indian market, Hiten Mehta, president, Multigraph Machinery, said, “The Indian market has gone from 5 to 6 CI flexo presses a year to 20 to 25 presses. India and Asia have predominantly been a roto-gravure market. But slowly and steadily people are understanding that there are certain items which are supposed to be printed on CI flexo only. So the flexo jobs that were earlier printed on roto-gravure presses will now go back to where they actually belonged to. This, in turn, is going to increase the demand for quality CI flexo machines. With Manuflex now being manufactured in India, customers from the Indian sub-continent will be assured of world-class quality and service.” Mehta cautioned that European CI flexo press manufactures may have to cut their rates by 20 to 24% to stay in competition in India. “This is a fantastic news for Indian converters as they are the ones who will most benefit. I am sure Manuflex will be a game changer for the converting industry in India,” concluded Mehta. z

For example, the 100% web inspection system on this press is delivered and made by us and fully integrated inside the automation panel. So it helps operator handle it with a lot of ease. In addition, we have a lot of many other features which help you on saving resources. For example, the wash-up system of the press consumes much less solvent as compared to any other presses. Then, we have systems for fast changeovers, hence reducing the downtime of the press.” Sahni shared that another CI flexo press installation is currently going on at a company in North India. Of late, W&H has installed its machines in many companies including Vijay Neha Polymers in Hyderabad, Balaji Multiflex in Rajkot, Global Polybags in Madhurai and Jayshree Propack in Ahmedabad.
The machine is imported from Italy. It may be recalled that Manugraph entered into a strategic alliance with Italybased Carraro last year to commence the manufacturing of Carraro CI flexo press in India at Manugraph’s state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Kolhapur. The core of the collaboration is technology transfer by Carraro to build high-quality CI flexo presses in India. After the alliance, Manu-
Attendees were also able to see live demonstrations of XL Plastics’ center seal pouch making machine. “The center seal pouch making machine is designed specially for LDPE and recyclable material. The beauty of the machine is that you can make polyto-poly pouches. The final pouches are very strong and pass the drop test too. The machine can produce around 120 pouches per minute,” said Mehta. Mira Vora of XL Plastics said, “Advantages of poly-to-poly pouches are multifold. First, it is cheaper because no polyester is used. Secondly, poly is slightly stretchable so unlike polyester it will not become hard and crack. Finally, it is completely recyclable.”
Blown film lines To have absolute cost control and have direct access to the films that they need, Osho produces its own films. For this, the company has installed a 3-layer and a 7-layer blown film lines from Rajoo Engineers. These lines have a production capacity of 600 and 350 kilogram films an hour respectively. There is yet another 3-layer line
Cyberflex 1708-850 from Carraro Osho’s Open House offered visitors a taste of what’s new in the Indian market. The Cyberflex 1708-850 at Osho Flexibles is Carraro’s first CI flexo press in India. The commercial production on the third line can start anytime soon as the company is just waiting for the approval to start the power connection. “These machines are fully loaded machines with full automation features. The machines come with gravimetric blending dosing and thickness control systems. However, the absolute beauty of these machines is their die technology which has an excellent gauze variation,” said Mehta. All blown film lines are power-backed by UPS systems. Sunil Jain, president Rajoo Engineers, added, “Both the machines at Osho are currently producing PE films. However, a 7-layer machine is ideal for running barrier films with nylon or EVOH for edible oil packaging. Today, more and more film manufacturers are getting into barrier packaging. That is where the future is. In terms of popularity, 3-layer machine is the most popular one because of its flexible nature. But now people are graduating from 3- to 5-layer. The same film made on a 5-layer gives you a lot more advantage in terms of material saving and better properties.” Recently, Rajoo sold a 3-layer blown film line to Constantia Creative Polypack, Pondicherry.
Cleaners and washers from Scanvik Osho Flexibles has installed a number of equipment through Scanvik Packaging. z Varioman f:line manroland’s offset-gravure hybrid press for flexible packaging
m
anroland web systems had a good experience at the recently concluded PrintPack India 2019 exhibition. In addition to highlighting its new machines, the company also talked about its services, solutions and e-commerce platform to the visitors to its stand. “We represent the entire perspective of the printing world – it is not just that we are selling only new machines. That is why we had been quite successful in the last year. And that is how we plan to take it forward,” said Sudeep Bhattacharjee, managing director of manroland India.
In addition to its ranges of offerings, the company promoted its new offset-gravure hybrid press, Varioman f:line, at the exhibition. Varioman f:line marks manroland web’s foray into the packaging domain. The hybrid press which prints on films offers a low priced production process at highest quality. Printable substrates include films or paper from 10-300 micron. The range includes options for different web widths and a production speed of up to 400 m/min. Speaking about the new press, Bhattacharjee said, “The Varioman provides a lot of advantages. First, since the press is an offset press, it gives a huge cost benefit to customers as the press uses aluminum offset plates instead of gravure cylinders. The offset technology enables lowpriced and reproducible high printing quality. The additional usage of gravure printing equipment in the press enables an integration and automation across all systems.” “Second, worldwide even though packaging is growing, there is a lot of product segmentation happening. Which means, the number of runs has increased although the quantity has remained the same. Hence shorter runs are gaining popularity. In shorter runs, traditional processes becomes uneconomical. Thankfully, offset offers tremendous ad-

Photo: The Packman vantage of very short make-ready time as well as low cost.” “Third and the most important benefit is that the Varioman uses Electron Beam (EB) for curing. EB Systems help to make photo initiators, as used for UV-color, redundant. This makes the press perfect for food packaging. Worldwide UV is shrinking as it is not a very good thing to have di-
rectly on food packaging. EB on the other hand is very safe and eco-friendly.” Bhattacharjee shared that the combination of technologies in the Varioman f:line, particularly the quality of the printed product from the offset side, combined with the benefits provided by gravure printing (in the areas of varnishing, adhesives and opaque white) provide the quality and differentiation that a modern package printing operation requires. Recently, we did a job of a client in Europe who was using 22 pantone shades for a certain product on gravure press. However, the Varioman f:line replaced it with 7 offset colors. This was a huge saving for the client. Since for certain special application you need gravure, we also provide gravure units along with the press,” he said. Manroland sold its first Varioman press with 7 offset and 3 gravure units to a customer in Europe. “Last year, we had an Open House in Germany visited by major players form the flexible packaging arena worldwide. In India, we are approaching leading packaging converters. A few of them have even visited Germany to see the machine. We are getting a very good response from the India market for this press,” concluded Bhattacharjee. z – Mahan Hazarika

Flexibles has sold 26 ROBOSLIT dual turret slitterrewinders till now since it was first introduced in 2014.
The ROBOSLIT displayed at IndiaPlast 2019 runs at speeds up to 800 meters per minute. “It is a very operator friendly machine and allows you to produce better finished reels because the machine always runs under right tension due to the Intelligent Tension Management system installed in the machine. Reel tension is very crucial
when you run a slitter-rewinder at high speeds. The machine also comes with a lot of safety features installed,” said Kohli. The ramp up and ramp down time of the ROBOSLIT OHP has also been reduced further to increase the productivity of the machine. Speaking about the market, Kohli said, “The quality standards have become more stringent, and the problems converters today face are related to the tightness of the winding, cutting accuracy, edge finish, resid-
ual charge and raised edges among others. As a manufacturer, we have to improve our machines to tackle these problems. Today people want to improve their production volume, efficiency and company turnover without increasing their machine count, head count and shop floor. So this is what machines like ROBOSLIT do – they allow you to expand your business without any proportionate increase in your resources.” z – Pranay Mathur

z Precise monitoring of fast moving print webs A.T.E. launches StrobAXIS range of lightning fast LED stroboscopes
A
.T.E. recently launched a range of LED stroboscopes for the print and packaging sector. Called the StrobAXIS series, these stroboscopes are designed for various applications including printing, labeling, slitting, doctoring, die-cutting, embossing, among others. A.T.E.’s lightning fast range of stroboscopes – StrobAXIS enable precise monitoring of fast moving print webs. The company highlighted these products at the recently concluded IndiaPlast 2019 exhibition.
Through StrobAXIS, the moving web is illuminated by periodic series of sharp and short flashes. At a certain frequency the print web appears to be stationary or ‘near stationary’, allowing the operator to check the print web for any print errors. The operator can then take the necessary corrective action or actions to reduce expensive print material wastage. Over the past few years, the print and packaging industry has become very competitive; the impetus being on improved print quality and reducing wastage of expensive raw materials. Material rejections increase rework, thus negatively affecting productivity and therefore, profitability. Printers and converters are increasing production speeds, resulting in shorter job runs. The shorter job runs and higher production speeds mean that operators/printers need tools to spot print defects. StrobAXIS is hence a new addition to the operator’s arsenal that helps combat print defects. With deep domain knowledge built over three decades in the print and packaging field, A.T.E. is known as a source of reliable and high quality products. A.T.E. has developed customized solutions for demanding and complex printing applications that are focused on reducing waste and improving productivity. StrobAXIS is the latest addition to this portfolio.

to identify print errors on the web and take corrective action to prevent wastage. The StrobAXIS’ precise strobe control means that operators can easily match the frequency of the print web. An LCD panel is provided for display and setting/adjusting of illumination intensity and flash frequency parameters. “StrobAXIS will help monitoring print defects such streaks, voids, bleeding, missing prints drags and holes, and more. The machine mounted version of the StrobAXIS synchronizes with the machine speed, reducing reaction time and resulting in instant error identification. The StrobAXIS range of stroboscopes complement our other offerings for the print and packaging industry such as our automatic register control AlygnAXIS, ViewAXIS Mega and Tera web video systems, and DetectAXIS print defect detection system,” said Anand Mehta, VP – print and packaging equipment, A.T.E. z – Dev Kumar Dutta THE PACKMAN | Mar-Apr 2019

z DMA R10 Series with full digital control DMA Innotec promotes its new generation engraving machine at IndiaPlast 2019
A
t IndiaPlast 2019 in Greater Noida, 28 February to 4 March 2019, DMA Innotec promoted its new generation gravure engraving machine, DMA R10 Series. The DMA R10 Series has full digital control and runs at constant 8 KHz engraving speed. The unique technical features First Full Cell (FFC ) and Point to Point (PTP ) achieve the excellent quality of fine texts and line works. The One Path technology of the engraver allows images and very small texts to be engraved in one path at 8 KHz, which improves the production efficiently. For optimal productivity and quality, DMA R10 is integrated with the user friendly Packz PDF-based workflow editor from HYBRID Software for directly accepting PDF format.
“Today if we talk about the printing industry, everyone uses PDF format unlike in the engraving or rotogravure industry

Flexibles where TIFF format is more popular. We are the first company to use PDF format in engraving process,” said Rex Liu, CEO of DMA Innotec Group. Speaking about the advantages of the DMA R10 Series, Liu said, “One of the biggest benefits of using the R10 Series is that it can engrave dots in U shape. A normal engraving system cannot engrave in U shape. The ink transfer in U shape is much better compared to V shape engraving by normal engraving systems. In U shape, the cell bottom is long instead of being sharp. This
means, it can hold more ink volume and allow better ink transfer which in turn delivers greater degree of sharpness and detail – even for lighter colors. Liu added, “Because the R10 engraver has full digital control, we can engrave fullsize cell from the first row/cut with sharp edge results. In addition, cell engraving is precisely controlled by Point to Point Technique (PTP). DMA R10 can engrave images and very small texts with high resolution in one path at 8 KHz.” Based in Germany and Taiwan, DMA
has installed more than five engravers in India so far. In India, DMA Innotec is represented by InPack. “India is a very important market for us. Today India has only about 200 engravers. With the packaging industry growing at a rapid pace, the scope for growth is huge. Some few years ago, China had less than 200 engravers. However, today the number stands at more than 2,000. Just imagine, In India even if the number reaches just 800 installations in next few years, that will be huge,” concluded Liu. z – Dev Kumar Dutta
z Modern, light and stiff rollers for increasing machine efficiency Carbon Light sets the trend for carbon fiber rollers
A
t IndiaPlast 2019, Carbon Light displayed its range of carbon fiber rollers. The company manufactures carbon fiber rollers for the printing and packaging industries, blown film extrusion lines, slitting and converting applications, and non-woven applications (eg., textile industry). Carbon Light is the first company in India to manufacture carbon fiber rollers.
“Being the first in the industry, we face many problems as people in India are not quite familiar with carbon fiber rollers since all these years they were using aluminum, rubber or MS rollers. So now we are trying to tap the OEMs who basically sets the ground. Right now, we are providing our carbon fiber rollers to Pelican, Kabra, Kalpvrux Converting, Galaxy, Uflex and more. And these companies have started realizing the advantages of using carbon fiber rollers in their machines,” said Rini Bansal, business development engineer at Carbon Light. “Using carbon fiber rollers can increase line speeds significantly. That is because these rollers are quite light in weight and the stiffness is very high. The moment you press stop your machine, it gets stopped instantly due to its low moment of inertia thereby not dragging along the film – this is something you cannot achieve using alu-

ago, it started promoting itself for the first time at the PlastIndia exhibition in 2018. “After PlastIndia 2018, in past one year, we have received a very good response from the market. Machine manufactures are ap-
Flexibles preciating the kind of potential these rollers can offer to their machines. With carbon fiber rollers, they are able to achieve much higher efficiency with performance of the same machine, which was earlier using normal rollers, going up significantly in terms of speeds, accuracy and better sensitivity on films. Also, vibration caused by the machine can affect the film. Rollers constitute about 80 to 85% of the vibration in the machine.
Using carbon fiber rollers this can be reduced greatly.” Speaking about the challenges, Bansal said, “All these years, it was more about educating ourselves first and then educating the customers because these rollers are quite new not only to the Indian market but to us as well. Fortunately, since our parent company has more than 30 years of experience in carbon fiber winding, we used that
experience and started understanding customer requirements.” Bansal said that Carbon Light’s objective of participating at IndiaPlast 2019 is to make end users understand about carbon fiber rollers. “When end users understand the benefits of the carbon fiber rollers, they automatically ask the manufacturers to provide machines with carbon fiber rollers.” z – Pranay Mathur

z Vinsak announces alliance with SPG Prints for prepress equipment Excell Graphics and Sreedhar Labels opt for Lombardi Synchroline 430
A
t PrintPack 2019, Vinsak announced the sale of two Lombardi Synchroline 430 flexo presses – one to New Delhi-based Excell Graphics and another to Ahmedabad-based Shreedhar Labels. This Excell’s second Synchroline 430.
The Synchroline 430 that Excell Graphics ordered is a 17-inch, 8-color flexo press with features such as UV drier at all stations, automatic registration, online flat screen, rotary die-cutter and inline slitter and rewinder. The press can handle a variety of substrates from 12 microns to 400 gsm. “The new Synchroline 430 has the online flat screen, which is not there in the older Synchroline 430 that we have. The flat screen feature makes the press very efficient in terms of both cost, operations and speed,” said Shashwat Bansal, partner, Excell Graphics. Excell currently manufactures self-adhesive labels but is now looking to venture into shrink sleeve labels and mono cartons, and according to Bansal, the capability of the Lombardi to handle a variety of materials with equal efficiency will make the task easier. Meanwhile, the Lombardi Synchroline 430 label press ordered by Shreedhar Labels can print on substrates ranging from 12 microns to 350 GSM (nearly 500 plus microns). It also comes with an auto-registration feature by default. Sreedhar Labels traditionally is a commercial printer. The company was planning to diversify into packaging since the last two years. The main reason Sreedhar Printers decided to diversify to packaging is because the company has already witnessed a lot of players entering the paper packaging segment and in order to diversify to labels, one needs to have a particular skill set.

For TCPL, this was its second Easymatrix 106 FC – the first one being installed about two years ago. According to Michael Gao, sales manager for Masterwork Group, Easymatrix 106 CS series is one of the most popular machines with 170 installations worldwide since it was launched after the Heidelberg-Masterwork tie-up. Around 10% of the machines are installed in Germany. In India, there are 12 machines installed. A long-standing commercial printer, Amber Print Pack has diversified to the packaging segment recently. Abbas of Amber Print Pack said, “In the past twothree months, we have been witnessing a decline in print jobs from private players, though the flow of jobs from the government has been steady. This has led us to think about diversifying our business to the packaging segment.” The Easymatrix 106 CS can deliver comprehensive service. Short setup times and easy operation provide a high level of productivity. The workflow is very effective because automation eliminates many mistakes from manual activities. With a

Additional to the cutting station, it is equipped with a hot foil unit, which enables you to install three to six longitudinal and up to two transversal foil feeding shafts. The Hot Foil Computer System helps to speed up the foil adjustment and keep an eye on the parameters while running the machine. Recently Heidelberg signed an agreement with the Chinese post-press specialist Masterwork Group (Masterwork) under which the latter will obtain an 8.5% stake in the former. The aim was to further improve its market position in the packaging printing segment. Peter Rego, general manager for Heidelberg India, said, “Thanks to Heidelberg’s partnership with Masterwork, Heidelberg customers enjoy direct access to a comprehensive and affordable portfolio of diecutters, hot foil stampers, folding carton gluers, and offline packaging inspection systems. Combining Heidelberg’s engineering leadership and Masterwork’s manufacturing prowess assures that every investment in postpress and finishing equipment will be a rewarding one.” z

z PrintPack India 2019 Pragati, Sattik and Packmaax invest in DGM folder-gluers
D
GM India has sold three foldergluers at the PrintPack India 2019 exhibition. While Hyderabad-based Pragati bought the SmartFold 1100PC foldergluer, Kolkata-based Sattik Packaging and Delhi-based Packmaax India inked the deal for Megafold 2400 and SmartFold 1100SL respectively. For Sattik Packaging, which also makes 3- and 5-ply boxes, this is the second folder-gluer from DGM.
The SmartFold 1100PC folder-gluer has a capability to do straight-line, bottomlock and double-wall boxes with a speed of 400 meters per minute. Puneet Aggarwal, managing director of DGM India, said that Pragati liked the ‘motorized with memory’ feature of the folder-gluer. “Normally, in folder-gluers available in the market, the conveyor movement is executed by operators manually by moving a handle. But our folder-gluer has a motorized function. So no manual operation by the handle is required. With the press of a button, you can move the conveyors. So, it becomes easy for operators. Once you setup the complete machine which has a memory function, you just have to press the memory button and the programme is saved in the computer. So whenever you have a repeat job, you just need to recall that job and every section conveyor will start setting up automatically. Hence you don’t need to create a job ticket,
Puneet Aggarwal, managing director of DGM India, at PrintPack India 2019. Photo: The Packman job log etc., as everything is in the PLC. This makes job changeovers a lot faster. This is the main reason why Pragati chose this folder-gluer,” he said. Aggarwal revealed that by the time the PrintPack exhibition concludes, the count of DGM machines sold over last four months in India will go up to more than 10. A stellar salesman who has his fingers on the pulse of the Indian market, Aggarwal joined as managing director of DGM India in November 2018. DGM is a 35 year old company based in Huizhou city, China, manufacturing diecutters, hot foil stamping machines, folder-gluers and flute laminators. The company also manufactures folder-gluers for 5-ply boards. DGM manufactures over 350 machines every year out of which 40% is exported to different countries. In 2018, DGM decided to enter the India market as a
direct subsidiary, and appointing Aggarwal as the managing director is DGM’s first step toward achieving this goal. The new office, expected to be in operation by April 2019, will be based in Noida. Aggarwal shared that the new DGM India office will also have a demo center. For after-sales service, DGM India has partnered with Chennai-based PrintPack Technology. “India is a service-sensitive market – so providing flawless service to our customers is our first priority. That is why we did not tie up with any new service providers but with someone who is in this industry for more than 25 years with vast experience and expertise. The service team of PrintPack Technology is capable of handling any critical issues as they know these machines inside-out,” concluded Aggarwal. z – Mahan Hazarika THE PACKMAN | Mar-Apr 2019

ocus on growth markets such as digital packaging printing is part of the successful Koenig & Bauer strategy. With the installation of the first CorruJET press at the KOLB company group in Memmingen, it has now taken the next step along this fruitful path.
When developing the new CorruJET press for the corrugated board industry, Koenig & Bauer was able to call upon extensive experience already gained with the RotaJET. The CorruJET can deliver highresolution digital print at production speeds of up to 6,000 sheets per hour and handles formats up to 1,700 x 1,300 mm (66.9 x 51.2 inches). All customary outer liners, whether coated or uncoated, can be printed in exceptional quality. This combination of high quality and maximum throughput is a key distinguishing feature of the CorruJET. As the sheet infeed was designed for a hardedge sheet orientation, it can be combined easily with typical peripheral equipment (pre-feeder, stacker) and harmonizes with the standard logistics of every corrugated board plant. The incorporation of a coating unit provides for gloss or matt coating of the 4-color images printed using water-based inks. Koenig & Bauer management board member Christoph Müller said, “In exactly the same way as for our analog presses, the CorruFLEX and CorruCUT, we based the project specifications on a careful evaluation of the market and customer wishes. The KOLB Group is here an ideal partner with whom to further the development of our new CorruJET for digital post-printing on corrugated board.” The CorruJET is set to enter production in the second quarter of 2019. New premises for KOLB Digital Solutions were opened in Memmingen-Amendingen just last year, barely a stone’s throw from the KOLB group headquarters in the town. The CorruJET will form the heart of a new production plant with integrated fin-

eidelberg is looking to further improve its market position in the growing packaging printing segment by taking its long-standing sales partnership with Masterwork Group, China’s largest manufacturer of die-cutters and hot-foil embossing machines, to a whole new level. Based in the Chinese city of Tianjin, Masterwork is to obtain around 8.5% of the Heidelberg share capital under a cash capital increase from authorized capital excluding shareholder subscription rights. The implementation of such capital measure is subject to approval by Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG’s supervisory board. The proposed capital increase provides the opportunity for Heidelberg to acquire a further strategic anchor shareholder with a long-term investment horizon as well as to strengthen its equity.
Subject to approval by the relevant bodies on both sides and the Chinese authorities, the capital measure should provisionally take place by the end of the first calendar quarter of 2019. The issue price of the new shares is set to be EUR 2.68. If the market price significantly outstrips the envisaged issue price, this will be renegotiated in line with statutory requirements. The funds Heidelberg generates with the capital increase are to be used to accelerate its digital agenda (digitizing products, processes, and business models, for example) and for general business financing. Masterwork supports the Heidelberg strategy and is demonstrating its clear commitment to long-term collaboration. Heidelberg is currently considering and discussing whether it will seek to obtain a shareholding in Masterwork. “The Heidelberg Management Board and Supervisory Board are delighted that our long-standing, successful collaboration with Masterwork is to become much closer. The possibility of linking Masterwork’s postpress machines to the Heidelberg cloud is a big advantage when it comes to realizing the value proposition of using production data to boost customers’ productivity. Packaging printing is expected to enjoy above-average growth in the coming years. Heidelberg already holds a leading position in this segment in Europe and the Americas, while Masterwork is one of China’s leading postpress suppliers for packaging. The closer ties are set to significantly strengthen this position in China – the world’s largest packaging market – and in other regions, too.
Building on leading market position in growing packaging printing segment
What’s more, there are plans for closer collaboration focusing on the two companies’ value chains. Heidelberg will continue to supply the dynamic markets in China and the rest of Asia from the site in Qingpu, near Shanghai, that it established back in 2006. As a result of the closer working relationship with Masterwork, it will also benefit from joint component manufacturing operations at the Masterwork site in Tianjin in the future. This will provide both companies with a whole host of possibilities for improving their efficiency. z

z Food packaging and labeling
Small is the new big: on-the-go snack bars Kathryn Fox, global marketing manager at Videojet Technologies, looks at the rising star of on-the-go snack bars in Europe and how manufacturers can keep productivity to a maximum with advanced coding and marking systems
I
n a world where convenience is king, and people are constantly on the move, snacking on-the-go and in between meals has become a mainstay in the European diet. Snack bars are a prominent format in this sector. In 2016 alone, the European snack bar market posted revenues of US$ 3,841 million, according to a report published by Mordor Intelligence. This growth is set to continue, with a forecasted CAGR of 3.1% from 2018-2023, driven largely by sales of breakfast bars. In the UK, for example, 22% of adults regularly eat breakfast onthe-go at least once a week, and across Europe breakfast bars occupy over 50% of the total snack bar market share.
Energy, granola and fruit-based bars make up the majority of the remaining market, and consumers continue to be drawn to healthier on-the-go options. Being time poor does not mean consumers are prepared to compromise on nutritional values, and brands have reacted to increased demand accordingly. Whole grain snack bars are the fastest growing category according to the European snack bar market report (by Mordor Intelligence), with energy and protein bars also proving popular – particularly after exercise. Their portability and convenience make snack bars a very versatile option, and their smaller size also contributes to less food waste and avoids binge eating.

THE PACKMAN | Mar-Apr 2019

Space, speed and sustainability For manufacturers, there are a number of challenges associated with producing snack bars, including the necessity to provide certain compulsory information on a very small surface area, such as lot numbers and best-by dates. Codes must be clearly visible to ensure consumers can easily identify important product information, while lot numbers and bar-coded information must be easily read by scanning devices. Maintaining consistency and accuracy is also challenging. Single serve packages must be coded in a precise and often small area. Errors like offset codes, result in a potential drop in a plant’s productivity and can even cause a financial impact. Smaller packages lead to more packaging materials required. Because of that, overpackaging and its effect to the environment has been a big concern over time. How to
balance convenience and sustainability is another big challenge for snack bar packaging.
A ‘flexible friend’ Snack bars are mostly packaged with flexible films, which can be printed on before product packaging in flow wrapping machines. In this instance, Thermal Transfer Overprinters (TTO) are the ideal solution. TTO printers use a high-resolution printhead and thermal transfer ribbon to create high quality, clear images at speeds up to 500 packages per minute. In addition to standard lot and expiry date information, TTO’s high-resolution printheads can print logos, graphics and barcodes. This can be a significant advantage, as it enables manufacturers to hold less pre-printed packaging SKUs in stock as they can print on-demand. Advanced controller software provides an intuitive interface to enable operators to
Coding and Marking
How to balance convenience and sustainability is another big challenge for snack bar packaging virtually eliminate coding errors in TTO printers. Some of the TTO printers also have additional code assurance software, iAssure, that provides intelligent code assurance to customers. iAssure conducts printing spot checks in real time that can catch significant recurring print defects far faster than manual quality checks. Through a process of image capture, analysis and comparison, any codes that do not meet the required format can be instantly rejected. This software helps customers quickly identify illegible codes, thereby reducing packaging waste and rework time.
Clean, clear, precise Laser marking systems are highly effective when manufacturers require individual products to be coded at a high speed. Due to the variety of ingredients and nutrition, consumer-driven product proliferation is commonly seen in snack bars. The need to shut down and set up for different products makes flexible production lines experience more downtime than dedicated lines. Advanced laser controller software like line set-up wizards, along with a suite of productivity tools, can help operators address the sources of both planned and unplanned
downtime. Depending on user familiarity, set-up wizards can be between 25-50% faster than legacy controller interfaces. Assuming even a modest number of changeovers per day, these time savings can add up to meaningful production hours over a year. In addition, Code Assurance features enable production supervisors and quality teams to easily create error-proofing rules during job set-up that limit operator input to predefined choices. Laser solutions are also able to minimize packaging uses and contribute to certain corporate social responsibility (CSR) goals. Because laser solutions use no consumables outside of electricity and require little maintenance, plants are able to reduce production waste caused by planned or unplanned downtime, and can significantly reduce or often eliminate the use of volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
A versatile option with its own set of ‘smarts’ Continuous Inkjet (CIJ) printer is a great option for snack bar manufacturers looking for ease of integration, as they can code and mark on both carton cases and plastic films before or after a product is packaged.
Although regulations in the food sector are strict and complicated, a selection of inks has been developed to accommodate the unique requirements. A newly launched supplies brand, iQMark, including inks, make-ups, cleaners and ribbons, has been designed to comply with strict governmental and industry regulations as well as help customers meet their corporate social responsibility (CSR) goals. There are over 30 inks under iQMark that address those objectives. One of the newest iQMark inks for CIJ complies with the European Printing Ink Association (EuPIA) Exclusion List. iQMark supplies also help enable ‘go green’ and ‘environmentally friendly’ initiatives by helping customers reduce or even eliminate methyl ethyl ketone (MEK), emissions of VOCs, and consumption of energy and raw materials. While manufacturers may have concerns that inks and fluids can damage the food production environment, embedded microchips in CIJ can ensure the right fluid is being used, and a Smart Cartridge fluid delivery system can virtually eliminate spillages. Like laser and TTO technologies, CIJ printers also feature intuitive interfaces to ensure the elimination of coding errors. Especially where fast changeovers are required, improving efficiency and keeping uptime to a maximum is critical. For functionality coupled with clean and neat usage, CIJ printers will be a viable proposition.
From big to small The challenges presented to snack bar manufacturers are growing bigger. Printing in a precise and small area at high speeds is challenging enough, not to mention keeping the entire line running without stopping for printing errors. Through an overall understanding of the product, packaging substrates, operating speeds and regulatory requirements, an expert supplier in coding and marking can turn those big challenges into small ones, which allows manufacturers to concentrate on the important business of production and to continue to provide consumers with convenient and healthy snack options. z

Cosmo Films’ Q3FY19 PAT increases by 36% and net revenue by 22%
C
osmo Films Limited has declared its financial results for the quarter ended December 2018. The company has grown both in terms of net revenue and EPS during the quarter. FY19 net revenue increased by 22% on YOY basis due to increase in sales volume (9%) and pass through of increase in raw material prices (13%).
The domestic film margins continued to decline until November 2018. Besides there was an adverse impact from one-time inventory revaluation loss of Rs.9 crores due to sudden sharp fall in raw material prices towards December end. The results were also impacted by hedging cost/forex losses of Rs.4.5 crores (vs. Rs.3.4 crores gain in corresponding quarter). Despite the adverse factors, the company maintained its EBITDA from increase in export margins, tax incentives on new investment and one-time gain of Rs 8
crores from sale of land and building in US subsidiary following the de-commissioning of plant.
Tax expense for the quarter ended 31 December 2018 is net of deferred tax credit of Rs 3.7 crores with respect to temporary differences pursuant to filing of Income Tax Return for AY 2018-19. Commenting on the financial performance of the company, Pankaj Poddar, CEO, Cosmo Films, said, “The demand and supply situation has started to get better with demand growth outpacing supply and the price recovery may start happening in the foreseeable future. The company has also stabilized its sales from additional capacity and therefore can better focus on improving prices and sales mix. The US thermal film plant has been relocated to India. Shifting to India shall help the company optimize cost and help improve capacity utilization. The thermal film for sales in the USA shall henceforth be entirely supplied from India.” z
Nine Dragons signs MOU for mill in India
H
ong Kong-based Nine Dragons Paper has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Indian state of Maharashtra to invest some US$ 630 million to establish a paper- and board-making presence in the state.
According to The Economic Times, the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) made an early March announcement about the MOU. A spokesperson for Nine Dragons referred to the MOU as “first step towards a market entry,” and said little additional detail about the MOU is currently available. “We feel very positive about building our presence in India,” says the company’s Benjamin Ng. He said the MOU “is very early stage; it only reflects the serious intention of the parties to work together to further explore feasibility and start a process of studying and pinning down more details
about business targets, optimal investment scales, terms and structure, etc.” The Economic Times reports that Nine Dragons intends to build a mill in the state, which is located in western and central India and includes Mumbai. Nine Dragons would reportedly invest up to 45 billion Indian rupees ($634 million) to build the facility. The MIDC describes itself as the “industrial infrastructure development agency” for the state, which has some 112 million people. The agency says it manages some 289 industrial parks in Maharashtra. Nine Dragons currently has more than 15 million metric tons of paper- and boardmaking capacity, with a focus on containerboard and other packaging grades. In late February remarks accompanying its most recent financial report, Nine Dragons said it was “actively pursuing the goal of completing the construction of four new
paper machines in China in 2019” and was planning “to implement a series of equipment upgrade and expansion projects at its four pulp and paper mills in the United States.” It did not at that time mention any plans for the Indian market. z THE PACKMAN | Mar-Apr 2019
