omentum is building for the 40th anniversary edition of Labelexpo Europe 2019, with just three weeks to go until this landmark show opens its doors in Brussels. With over 600 exhibitors taking part in the biggest label and package printing event in the world between 24-27 September, this edition of the show is set to be its largest to date. With this issue we explore different technologies, innovations and new launches that exhibiting companies are bringing to the label show. Over 200 of the exhibitors are new this year, and will be displaying their latest innovations to an international buyer audience of printers, suppliers, brand owners and designers. Back home, the 8th Speciality Films and Flexible Packaging Global Summit in Mumbai received a rousing response with 1,370 delegates representing 510 companies from 21 countries attending the event. A large part of the 2-day summit’s agenda was devoted to sustainability and included distinguished speakers from government policymakers and industry leaders. Some of the key takeaways from the summit are: any single use plastic should be judged on the basis of utility and its adverse impacts on the environment, collection of waste has to be improved, biodegradable plastics can be a good alternative to consider, structural evolution in flexible packaging is an opportunity for sustainability, brand owners need a unified policy across the country, corona or plasma surface treatment can be very useful sustainable solution, growth premium for India stands around 3.6% and it is likely to increase to 4.1% over the next 5-years and more. Government and policymakers who attended the Global Summit were of the opinion that plastic is not bad and therefore they are open to all kinds of suggestions from the industry to contain the menace of litter. Work on changing the film structure of MLP has already begun to make them recyclable with existing technologies with SSI units. Collection mechanisms are required across the country for large scale collection of low-value plastic film waste – the industry must come forward to adopt PWM (plastic waste management) and SUP (single use plastic) definitions. The changing regulatory landscape with regards to inks used in the coding and marking of products and packaging can cause significant challenges for manufacturers across a wide range of industries. While many will be aware that food-contact inks are highly regulated, a similar level of control for handling and use is in place for most other manufacturing sectors. Ink designs are complex formulations and contain many different compounds which are individually selected by formulators to give certain performance to the final ink. From time to time, reclassification of ink ‘ingredients’ occurs which can have significant consequences on the availability of inks, either because a component is no longer suitable for use, or a more restrictive reclassification leads to a run on alternative options. Often, it’s not as simple as swapping one component for another as it can have significant impact on the ink performance, such as code legibility and durability; printer efficiency; frequency of nozzle cleaning etc. that can impact product quality and production reliability. Read in this issue how regulations and trends are making manufacturers ‘think ink’. This month we launched our new website for the food and beverage industry – FoodBevIndia.com. It will bring you insights and information on various aspects related to the food and beverage industry, including procurement, sorting, storage, processing, packaging, automation, equipment and machinery, logistics, retailing, food safety and policy matters. u mb ai - h e a d qu ar t e re d Parksons Packaging has commissioned the country’s first HP Indigo 30000 digital press for monocartons at its Daman plant. This is Parkson’s first digital press and also the first B2-format digital press in the Indian monocarton industry. The new investment will enable Parksons to produce high-quality 20 x 30-inch applications for the carton industry. The HP Indigo 3000 is a one-of-a-kind, field proven, digital folding carton press that can help the carton printing industry to address the demands coming from the healthcare, food and beverage, personal care and cosmetics sectors.
The HP Indigo 30000 press at Parksons’ Daman plant is a uniquely and highly configured 7-color press with two Tresu iCoat 30000 inline coaters designed for folding carton production and total integration with the HP Indigo 30000 digital press. Water-based and UV varnishes can be used for a wide range of applications. The other advantage is it can print variable data. So it could be different artworks, it could be different messages, it could be multiple codes, it could be assorted security features. “It’s a question of how you connect the software and the data-points with the printing press. This is not possible on an offset press. That’s the strength of variable data printing on this machine,” said Ramesh Kejriwal, chairman of Parksons Packaging. “We have been looking at cutting edge technology for our business and HP Indigo 30000 is the perfect fit because it has the

The entire market is evolving, and the brand owners are looking at how they can enhance their brands and launch new products. We have taken a significant step in that direction by partnering with HP,” said Ramesh Kejriwal. “The HP technology will simplify the complexity of design handling, allow our customers to dip in and out of their shortrun requirements, smart packaging support like greater track-and-trace and the ability to interact with their end-users,” said Siddharth Kejriwal, director of Parksons Packaging. Parksons Packaging has plants in the North, East, South and Western parts of India and is an acknowledged master of offset printing techniques. Its six plants operate more than 20 highly configured offset press lines. In the last several years, the company has been experiencing a greater demand for short run cartons from the pharma and FMCG segments.
Alon Bar-Shany, vice president and general manager at HP Indigo, said, “Brands want quality and good price, they want faster on-time delivery, they want to be able to react much faster through various elements of customization, and there’s a certain growing aspect of brand protection and security. With the HP Indigo presses, we are trying not to just provide printing technology, but work on an interim solution, which will enable everything from design, color management, printing to finishing, and of course meeting the very high-quality standards of offset.” “HP Indigo 30000 brings path-breaking innovation into packaging printing segment with its unique digital capabilities that can help create customized and personalized products. We are excited to work with Parksons Packaging and help them drive greater value and quality for their customers,” said A Appadurai, country manager, Indigo and PageWide Web Press, Graphics Solutions Business, HP India. z

z Siegwerk promotes water-based inks and coatings at IndiaCorr Expo “Customization is the strategy that we follow in India” – Mahesh Kode of Siegwerk
A
t the recently concluded SinoCorrugated-IndiaCorr Expo in Greater Noida, India, from 5 to 7 September 2019, Siegwerk India promoted its range of water-based inks and coatings for the corrugated industry. For flexographic printing, Siegwerk provides printing-inks covering all types of paper and board packaging – from corrugated board, bags and sacks, paper-tissues and napkins to cups and display boxes.
“In the corrugated industry, customization of ink is very important. Since people run a host of printing machines from different brands, the type of inks required also varies accordingly. So inks have to be customized to get the desired print quality. Customizing inks according to customers’ requirements is one of our biggest strengths. One big advantage for Siegwerk is its huge footprint in the country. We have got blending centers across the country in all the metro and tier-2 cities. Because of these blending centers, we are able to match shades instantly within 24 hours, and give ready-shades to our customers. For us, customization is the strategy that we follow in India,” said Mahesh Kode, business unit head – narrow web, paper and board, liquid food, Siegwerk India. The corrugated industry in India has been changing quite rapidly in last 3-4 years. What used to be a cottage industry with low quality printing has now evolved into an industry demanding high quality graphics, printed on imported and sophisticated highend machines, on high-strength boards. “Siegwerk already has products ready for these kinds of machines. Our products are future-ready and to that extent we have been very successfully selling these for last few years. Right now what we have is adequate for the market needs and it is in-line with the global portfolio as well,” said Kode.

We have separate cells globally as well in India which look at how safe our inks can be. Now when you talk about safety, we are not talking just about absence of heavy metals etc. in the ink but we are also talking about migration. Mi-
gration optimized inks are the inks which have been formulated with careful selection of raw materials in accordance with legal requirements of the region, brand owners’ requirements as well as self-commitment from the ink manufacturers. Our inks are compliant to legal requirements as well as follow European Standards,” concluded Kode. z – Mahan Hazarika

A
t the recently concluded SinoCorrugated-IndiaCorr Expo in Greater Noida, India, from 5 to 7 September 2019, BHS Corrugated promoted its corrugation machines. BHS Corrugated is a global market leader for corrugators with 2,200 employees, in more than 20
countries, with a market share of around 55%. In 2018, BHS Corrugated generated a record turnover of 575 million euros.
BHS started its operations in India in 2009. “When we came to India 10 years ago, the Indian market was not prepared for us because we were considered too expensive,
Monocarton having too much automation in our machines. So it took us some time, rather it took us five years to sell our first machine. We sold our first machine in India in 2014 to Japan’s biggest box maker Oji which set up a new corrugation plant in Neemrana. In last three years, we have sold as many as ten machines in India till now. Some of our customers are Horizon Group, Box and Board in Hosur, Vijayanand Paper Mill in Hyderabad, Vital Paper Products in Sri City and Adani Wilmar. We are happy that now the Indian corrugated market is also going towards automation and preferring global leader like BHS for their requirements,” said Bijendra Sharma, managing director, BHS Corrugated India. “BHS Corrugated has been consistently strong across the entire product and service range – from development and production, to installation and maintenance,” said Sharma. “We have a strong sales and service team wherever our customers are. At present we have our offices in Pune, Nagpur, Ahmedabad, Delhi, Greater Noida and

in label converting productivity that will revolutionize the label supply chain. The solution is delivered in partnership with global market leader in print finishing, AB Graphic International, combining
their Digicon Series 3 converting line with a Domino N610i Integration Module.
“There is an ongoing debate about how digital is best deployed by a label converter,
Labels whether as a stand-alone press with separate near-line finishing, with inline finishing, or in the form of a hybrid digital press. Although the job book profile is a major determinant of what is best in each case, we see a growing trend towards more hybrids. We have spent a lot of time talking to our customers in order to understand the market trends and their needs. Our conclusions are: even shorter run lengths combined with more just-in-time label production, removing the finishing bottleneck, and reducing waste both for cost and for sustainability, says Philip Easton, director of Domino Digital Printing Solutions. The scheduled presentations will demonstrate in a single print, finish, slit, inspection and turret rewind process, the production of three different jobs with a total of ten SKU changes, a substrate change, three die-cut changes, foil change and varnish changes with output all produced and boxed ready for shipment in less than 20 minutes. Key features of this new generation production line include the Domino intelligent Technologyi-Tech WebRev web reverse function which, when combined with the AB Graphic’s Digicon 3 buffers, can automatically reverse the web. For a substrate change, this allows the end of one production job and the beginning of the next to be processed on the line at the same time. Material waste, even with substrate change, die change and varnish change is less than 7 meters and this will be demonstrated throughout Labelexpo. Using the latest AB Graphic’s turret rewinder, this integrated single process takes an unprinted web through to finished rolls ready to ship. Besides minimizing production time, this solution also removes the unnecessary waste associated with separate processes to avoid the risk of under production. The result is minimal time to produce multiple short run jobs, lower costs, facilitating just-in-time lead times, and less waste meaning less impact on the environment. At Labelexpo Europe 2019 (Hall 9, Booths 9A60 and 9B50), Domino Digital Printing Solutions will be holding the Domino N610i hybrid presentations at 10:30 and 14:00 on Tuesday 24th, Wednesday 25th and Thursday 26th and at 10:30 on Friday 27th September. Other planned demonstrations will include the N610i digital label press in reel to reel format, K600i digital embellishment including digital Printing of varnish and digital cold foiling, and the latest high speed K600i monochrome variable data imprinting. z

pany in India, we wanted to go for the best equipment in the global market to meet its standards, after considering many direct laser engraving machines, we realized one simple thing, that 90 to 95% anilox manufacturers in the world use ALE engravers. This says a lot about ALE’s expertise for making engravers for producing anilox cylinders. After taking tests of a range of screens and seeing the engraving process and the capabilities of the machine, we finalized our order for the 4.5-meter Hercules laser engraving system knowing that we
cannot go wrong with this choice.” Patel added, “ALE has been exceptional in its service. The machine is a wonder to work with. We have engraved various cell shapes, and LPI’s over a range of finer and coarser screens, and we are successfully supplying these rollers for various applications in the industry. The way we are growing and reaching to different sectors in the market, we could be bold and say that we will bee soon installing another engraving machine from ALE.” z – Pranay Mathur

estlé will break new ground in supply chain transparency through a collaboration with OpenSC – an innovative blockchain platform that allows consumers to track their food right back to the farm. Through this collaboration, Nestlé becomes the first major food and beverage company to announce that it will pilot open blockchain technology in this way. This is part of Nestlé’s journey towards full transparency.
Founded by WWF-Australia and The Boston Consulting Group Digital Ventures, OpenSC has developed a platform that will give anyone, anywhere access to independently verifiable sustainability and supply chain data. The initial pilot program will trace milk from farms and producers in New Zealand to Nestlé factories
and warehouses in the Middle East. Later, the technology will be tested using palm oil sourced in the Americas. These pilots will allow Nestlé to understand how scalable the system is. Magdi Batato, executive vice president, head of operations, Nestlé S.A. said, “We want our consumers to make an informed decision on their choice of products – to choose products produced responsibly. Open blockchain technology might allow us to share reliable information with consumers in an accessible way.” Nestlé has piloted blockchain technology since 2017, most prominently with IBM Food Trust. In April, it gave consumers access to blockchain data for the first time, through Mousline purée in France. “This open blockchain technology will

“Our target was never to be India’s largest or the world’s largest. Our target is to be the world’s most premium polymer processing company” – Anantshree Chaturvedi Uflex’s global film manufacturing arm Flex Films, as part of its commitment towards greener environment, is offering an entire range of PCR grade film having minimum 90% post-consumer recycled PET content under the brand name Asclepius. Flex Film’s Asclepius patent pending film technology is a family of plain, treated, coated, high barrier and heat-sealable BOPET films based on 90% PCR polymer content. This film represents a 75% reduction in carbon footprint versus virgin BOPET grades. We recently met Anantshree Chaturvedi, vice chairman and chief executive officer, Flex Films International to know more about the new film. Here is an excerpt from the interview:
Mahan Hazarika: With the rise of green consumerism and need for brands to act on sustainable packaging, what is the scope and growth of Asclepius? Anantshree Chaturvedi: Asclepius is the brand for our 90% PCR-based PET film. We started off with our 30% PCR grade films. But with our pioneering technology, now we have come up with the 90% PCR BOPET film – Asclepius. This is the only 90% PCR BOPET film that has received the prestigious ‘Kingfisher’ Certification from SCS Global Services that certifies that Flex Films’ PCR grade films contains minimum 90% post-consumer recycled PET content. Asclepius was the Greek God of medicine. So we put the name of the brand in conjunction with that it is the medicine for the earth. We all talk about plastic waste and sustainability, huge garbage hills and large patches of marine waste causing damage to the entire ecosystems. Just the other day, I read about one of the most infamous plastic debris patches which is three times the

Flexibles size of France that floats between Hawaii and California. So, while everybody is talking about sustainability, we decided to do something tangible about sustainability and under that we started the brand Asclepius. Today’s consumer, especially the young consumer who have purchasing power are actively making a conscious choice of not buying a particular product, specially a FMCG product, if the packaging philosophy or the packaging material that is used in that brand doesn’t suit or match up to their particular moral code which is to be environmentally friendly. Because these consumers will not buy products which are not environmentally friendly, every packaging company must make products that those consumers will be able to buy without adding to the burden of plastic waste in the environment. Asclepius is our answer for that. If you see, most large consumer companies have made significant commitments that by year 2025 they will be plastic free, they will be 100% plastic recycled or they will have a complete closed-loop supply chain where plastic gets reprocessed and reused. So this is our effort
and trying to help consumers make a better choice as well as help those large brand owners and managers have options when it comes to plastic recycling and plastic reprocessing. Mahan Hazarika: Is there any risk/ challenges that Uflex will not be able to source adequate PCR in future to produce enough Asclepius film? Anantshree Chaturvedi: It is not easy to tell this right now because the project has just started. Now this completely depends on the scalability of the project. Today as I see, as I also described to you, there are many places all over the world where there are large amounts of access plastic wastes. This waste is a combination of plastic waste that has been manufactured, used and stayed in this places for years as well as new plastic waste that gets added unfortunately at a very significant rate everyday. Now for the next couple of years, as this type of initiatives scale up, we don’t predict there being any kind of shortage of post consumer recycled material to convert back to Ascle-

pius film. However, by 2040 to 2050 when according to various global trend reports, including McKinsey Energy Insights 2019, the use of fossil fuel will get reduced by almost 90%, I believe that changing of PCR waste will start running into shortage during that time. The world then will stop using fossil fuel the way we use it today. So by 2040, I believe, if things scale up according to global trends, we will run into a shortage. But I don’t think there will be any shortage till 2040. And if we do run into a shortage where we cannot find waste material, I think that is a very good situation for both the plastic industry and the planet earth. Mahan Hazarika: What are the steps taken by Uflex for sourcing the necessary PCR volume? Tell us a bit about your waste collection workflow? Anantshree Chaturvedi: Right now what we are doing is we are looking at partnering with local authorities near our global sites in the US, Poland, Mexico and Egypt for waste recycling facilities. For our present requirements, we have significant contracts in place with agencies and various local authorities that help us collect these wastes. In future, we are actually looking at setting
38

up large scale PCR recycling plants with the help of local authorities right next to where their waste sorting facilities are. Today, for us the ideal scenario is to set up facilities which will cost US$ 15 to 20 million per site. I believe, in the long run this price will go down significantly – hopefully US$ 7 to 8 million per site where we can set up facilities next to these reprocessing centers. Uflex’s strategy is to localize the collection process as much as possible. Localization makes it convenient for both consumers and the localized centers to run the collection process successfully. That I think will be the future and that should be our target as well. Mahan Hazarika: What is the volume of Asclepius you are producing currently? Which are the markets you are catering to right now and what are your plans way forward? Anantshree Chaturvedi: Right now Asclepius is mainly being produced in the US. We have scaled up this product quite significantly. We have really gone from zero to selling about 300-500 tonnes a month. We are really optimistic about selling more than 1200-1500 tonnes a month by quarter
to next year or even sooner. The markets we are catering to right now are primarily developed markets like the US, various parts of Europe, and certain parts of Latin America. But the real demand of this product has not yet started coming out of Asia. We are seeing some movement in India, in Japan and some other Asian markets but it is basically right now mostly a Europe- and US-centric market. Mahan Hazarika: From being India’s largest to the world’s largest, how Uflex is competing at a global stage in its ambition of doubling its manufacturing facilities for packaging films by 2025, with new plants being set up in Hungary, Nigeria and Russia? Anantshree Chaturvedi: Our target was never to be India’s largest and also our target is never to be the world’s largest. Our target is to be the world’s most premium polymer processing company and we want to create an impact which is profitable to the world as well as for us. So for us, setting up new plants in Hungary, Nigeria and Russia is simply to serve our customers better. Our vision is to become the most fruitful and most efficient just-in-time delivery polymer company in the world. The largest figure are sometimes very confusing. If you are the largest but not profitable, then there is no point of being the largest. The largest should also mean that you have the best top-line as well as the best bottom-line. Today, Uflex has a very strong top-line and I know that our bottom line will improve significantly with what we are doing in the future – and that is our target. z

Packaging the new generation of pharmaceuticals
P
lastic has long been the mostused raw material in pharmaceutical packaging because of its exceptional barrier properties. Investments in flexible packaging and continuing recycling programs amid environmental concerns mean that the use of plastic in pharmaceutical packaging shows no signs of wavering. The growing elderly population and resulting focus on senior-friendly packaging will contribute to the demand for flexible packaging. Companies are seeking out designs that balance convenience needs with tamper evidence and product protection, according to the 2018 Pharmaceutical Packaging and Processing Whitepaper, produced by PMMI, the Association for Packaging and Processing Technologies.
At the same time, pharmaceutical companies are diversifying the use of packaging technologies and materials. Active and intelligent packaging offers solutions for patient compliance issues. Nanotechnology and bio-pharmaceuticals have significantly impacted the drug delivery industry, and packaging forms play an integral role in the drug delivery process for some new medicines, such as injectables. The advent of these new drugs and compounds has resulted in a need for enhanced protection against factors like moisture, light, oxygen and mechanical forces.
Marrying protection and convenience Beyond its easy-open appeal, flexible packaging protects pharmaceutical products from contamination and environmental conditions while making them safer and

easier to dispense with precision. They also offer the advantages of chemical resistance, oxygen, light and moisture barriers, sealant layers and flexographic printing. Bags and pouches have applications in medical devices, liquids, wound care and burn care dressings, unit dose medications, medicated swabs, transdermal patches, capsules, pills and tablets, implantable devices and diagnostic test kits and more. For example, pouch solutions for medical device, pharmaceutical and diagnostic products can reduce the need for a heat-seal. Packaging suppliers also offer bag-in-box technology that innovates packaging and storage of bulk pharmaceuticals for institutional health care use. The double-package solution is designed to protect quality, extend shelf life and reduce waste for shelf-stable, preservative-free products. Flexible pouches also serve as innovative alternatives to the traditional boxes and cartons that usually house blister packaging. Multiple laminated, opaque layers provide barrier protection for prescription and over-the-counter drugs while making it difficult for children to open the packaging. Pouches are also easier to take on the go in first-aid kits, purses and bags, while offering a unique combination of pliability and strength
Although about two-thirds of Americans have a prescription medication, approximately 50% of people do not take their medications as prescribed. Innovations in packaging have the potential to help increase patient adherence, potentially saving thousands of lives a year. For example, blister packs with embedded microchips can record when a medicine is taken or administered and give reminders of when the next dose is due by beeping or otherwise signaling the patient. Other smart pack features may include expiration date warnings, storage condition monitoring, tamper alerts and bottle caps that can record dosing history data by tracking the removal of the cap. Near-field communication (NFC) technology is a method of delivering information about medicines interactively, like a video or audio message, on the patient’s smartphone. NFC also has track-and-trace applications throughout the supply chain. These tags can wirelessly communicate with NFC-enabled smartphones and can transmit product states such as factory sealed or opened. Furthermore, the NFC tags can contain unique identifiers for authentication and tracking.

z Web offset technology for flexible packaging Contiweb builds Thallo demonstration system for flexible packaging biologics that treat the condition’s source. At the same time, patients can manage aggressive cancers with antibody-based biologics by also targeting specific biologic processes. The emerging market for injectables is increasingly focused on outpatient treatments for chronic conditions. Injection has, for decades, been largely limited to inpatient use, with health professionals actively involved in administering doses. Now, what started as a burden for patients with diabetes, daily subcutaneous injections, has evolved into a manageable dosing strategy for a variety of medical conditions. As a result, syringes are being used more often, and may be preferable for their speed and direct application benefits. Glass’s chemical durability and uniform surface chemistry enable smoother line operations. Pharmaceutical companies are investing in research on how to improve the material by reducing flaws and cracks, which can cause supply shortages and recalls.
C
ontiweb, a specialist in technologies for printing, advanced drying and web-handling, has announced that it is constructing a Thallo demo system to meet the mounting global interest in web offset printing for flexible packaging. According to Jan Willem Nota, technical sales manager at Contiweb, packaging converters continue to face several key challenges, namely an ever-present squeezing of profit margins at the hands of short run lengths, together with environmental legislation aimed at reducing their carbon footprint.
“Web offset printing provides a viable solution to overcome these pain points,” Nota explains. “With the capability to setup a new job within minutes, the Contiweb Thallo dramatically slashes time-consum-
ing changeovers and is engineered to produce short runs quickly and profitably. Beyond this, the solvent-free inks ensure that the print provider’s carbon footprint is kept to a minimum.” Comprising seven UV offset units and one flexo unit for solvent- or water-based and UV inks, the demo system will be the first of its kind to be manufactured at the company’s headquarters in Boxmeer, the Netherlands. “We want to ensure that prospects can conduct their own tests or trial runs to assess the speed and print quality achievable with the Thallo,” adds Nota. “We are confident that they will appreciate the multitude of business benefits, not least of which is the ability to increase throughput and exceed customer expectations with shorter job turnaround times.” z

Manufacturers capture opportunities arising from chemical industry According to the study, one of the important growth drivers is an increase in intercontinental trade activities, which necessitate newer industries – such as bio-chemical, food grade ingredient, and processed food – to use rigid industrial packaging format. Furthermore, the market remains heavily dependent on four key end-use industries including chemicals and solvent, food and beverage, oil and lubricants, and automotive. The study opines that high demand for steel drums, pails, and rigid intermediate bulk containers (IBCs) from chemicals and
solvent industry continue to influence the growth strategies. Additionally, manufacturers are focused on increasing the production of plastic drums and bulk boxes to capitalize on rapidly expanding automotive and food and beverage industries. Despite the cloud swirling around the ill effects of plastic, manufacturers continue to use plastic as a convenient material for rigid industrial packaging, owing to technical and operational advantages and lower costs as compared to metals. Accounting for ~50% revenue share in 2018, sales of rigid containers made up of plastic are likely to witness significant growth in the future, backed further by the lightweight property and advances in technologies of polymer processing. However, low degradability of plastic will remain a key concern among manufacturers as well as end users.

z Felicitation by TÜV SÜD South Asia As per the study, reuse of containers is gaining ground in the rigid industrial packaging space, and to align with the current trends, manufacturers are placing more focus on R&D activities and innovations to increase the efficiency of products and maximize repeat use. The trend of customization has also been noticeable in the market, as manufacturers are inclining towards offering products that meet end users’ specific requirements. Growth prospects of the rigid industrial packaging, as identified by the study, are high in East Asia, representing a revenue share of 50% in 2018. An exponential rise in manufacturing activities in the region along with expansion of F&B industry has surged the demand for safe and contaminationproof packaging. Favorable government policies on intercontinental trade activities along with increasing number of OEMs will continue to create opportunities for market players in East Asia. The study identifies restraints that could possibly hamper the growth of the rigid industrial packaging market. Rapid emergence of new companies from developing countries, catering to the needs of local customers at reasonable costs, are likely to squeeze the global player’s margin in the market. These players are further under the pressure from end users to reduce the overall costs. The business intelligence highlights the competitive landscape in the rigid industrial packaging market, by conducting a thorough analysis on the key growth strategies of the market players. Acquisitions and partnerships with local players remain a strategic focus area of key stakeholders for enhanced global footprint. This study tracks growth of the global rigid industrial packaging market from 2019 to 2029. The global rigid industrial packaging is likely to spectate a steady rise at 4.5% value CAGR over the course of the forecast period, according to report study’s projections. z

A
t PackPlus 2019, Bostik highlighted two of its solvent-free adhesive products LF 225 and H300M. “The two products have excellent wettability on metallized films. The products can run PET/MPET substrates with good optics up to 250 m/min, and can solve a common problem of poor appearance (speckling) using solvent-free laminating adhesives at higher lamination speeds. Launched earlier this year, the products support high speed runs and have gone through extensive tests and trials before they were made available in the India market,” said Wladimir Moraes, global marketing manager, flexible packaging, Bostik.
“There was a need in the market for solvent-free adhesives and hence we developed the products which have same performance as solvent-based adhesive. The problem India converters are facing today is low speed while running solvent-free lamination of PET and metallized PET. So Bostik developed these two products which increase the lamination speed. The two products are developed specifically for the Indian market and are the most stable products offered by us for PET and MPET,” added Moraes. Bostik is a leading global adhesive specialist in construction, consumer and industrial markets. Bostik started its operation in India in 1992 through an agreement between Coates India and Bostik UK. However, Bostik India separated from Coates in 2001 to become an entity by itself. In 2018, Bostik India started a new plant in Gujarat to meet the increasing demand for adhesives in the industrial markets of India and South Asia. The new facility currently applies the latest manufacturing techniques to produce liquid adhesives for flexible lamination and footwear. It’s Bostik’s third plant in India with two other plants in Bangalore. In addition, the company has 15 warehouses and four sales offices with its headquarters in Bangalore.

z Flexible packaging is 100% recyclable and reusable – Ashok Chaturvedi Plastic consumption to grow twofold in next ten years
“T
he future of plastic is very bright. Today if you look at India, we are consuming about 26,000 tonnes of plastics everyday. And the way the growth has been projected, this will double within a decade,” Ashok Chaturvedi, chairman and managing director of Uflex, said at the 8th Speciality Films & Flexible Packaging Global Summit 2019 held in Mumbai on 22-23 August.
Chaturvedi asserted that flexible packaging, be it mono-layer or multi-layer, is 100% recyclable, reprocessable and reusable. “We can make more than 10,000 articles by recycling plastic. At Uflex, whatever flexible packaging waste we generate, we recycle and reprocess that, and make plastic products such as road divider etc. We have been recycling our plastic waste for more than two decades now. We produce 4-5 items from recycled plastics,” said Chaturvedi.“I can firmly say that the time is not far away when people will start using articles made of waste plastics with pride – like greetings cards made of recycled paper. Today, recycled paper greetings cards are fetching higher price than the greetings cards made of virgin paper. People will start taking pride in using items made out of re-

All we need is a proper waste collection system in place and to understand the benefits of recycling. It is sad that even developed countries, let alone developing countries, have not given enough focus to recycling,”
said Chaturvedi. He cited his recent visit to Poland where he saw that municipal authorities had not been recycling and reusing plastic waste and that the waste was being used to generate energy in cement plants. Similarly, he said that in China, plastic waste is being burnt, which is harmful to the environment. z – Dev Kumar Dutta

point of sales. Although hot foiling and hologram stamping are well introduced in the market there is still a huge potential for cost saving and quality to exploit. “What we are already doing in the narrow web can basically be copied on to the flexible packaging. So with the same technology, embellishment effect that we are already producing on labels can be achieved
on flexible packaging too. This is our plan to achieve in India. This potential can be developed with the Pantec Cheetah rotary hot foil and hologram stamping system,” said Rene Abacherli, head of sales, Pantec GS Systems, who recently visited India. “In India, the embellishment that customers are looking for is embossing. While embossing is basically done by deforming
Flexibles the substrate, our idea is also to look at the possibility of doing it at the visual aspects level. So we are offering unique features like registered 3D foil to achieve deformed effect on the substrate. There are substrates which are not suitable for embossing through physical deformation. In such cases, embossing effect can be achieved by using filmic material which has visual embossed effect,” explained Abacherli. In the wide web industry, Cheetah does hot foil stamping with foil saving and replacement of register foil. “The key is that we are very good in semi-film material – this means the waste you are generating by applying additional design element is very limited and therefore the cost of that additional feature is also very low,” said Abacherli. The foil consumption for the streams, which run in the ‘save mode’ on Cheetah is reduced to a minimum, by stopping the foil after a stamp, pulling it back and re-synchronizing it to the web for the following stamp. The remaining waste gap on the foil is less than 1

z Contribution to global environmental protection since 1978 Ofru celebrates 40th anniversary
O
fru Recycling is celebrating its 40th birthday. Ofru has been manufacturing distillation plants for the recovery of contaminated solvents since 1978, making an active contribution to environmental protection and sustainability.
The plant manufacturer focuses on the environmentally friendly use of chemicals, making the world a little bit greener every day. Now active on an international level, the company was founded in 1978 as an offshoot of the American Ransburg Corporation, today better known as ITW Ransburg. Ofru Recycling, short for “Oberflächentechnik Russau”, not only developed one of the first vacuum evaporators in the 1970s, but was also instrumental in establishing the now well-known distillation technology for flammable liquids on the German market. Continuous investment was made in
expansion abroad at the start of the 1990s. The framework conditions for the Bavarian experts are ideal. There is huge demand for German environmental technology. With an export share of over 80%, an extensive sales network and a multilingual in-house sales team, Ofru is extremely well positioned in the international market. In a similar way to spirits distillation, the Ofru plants work on the distillation principle. However, it is industrial chemicals and liquid flammable solvents such as acetone, thinner, ethyl acetate and toluene, as well as many other solvents, that are distilled here. The recycling plants developed by Ofru treat liquid hazardous waste and reduce in-house CO2 emissions, supporting recycling management and sustainable chemicals handling. With a daily capacity of 100 to 40,000 litres, the treatment plants are manufac-
tured at a modern manufacturing centre in Alzenau in North Bavaria / Germany, a hub of resource efficiency and a widev varietyof recycling technologies. The company has customers in almost every continent around the world. Ofru can look back at the successful development of the company over the past 40 years and is proud to have made such a major contribution to global environmental protection. z THE PACKMAN | Sep-OCT 2019

Coding and Marking
z Migration optimized ink systems
Regulations and trends are making manufacturers ‘think ink’
T
he changing regulatory landscape with regards to inks used in the coding and marking of products and packaging can cause significant challenges for manufacturers across a wide range of industries. While many will be aware that food-contact inks are highly regulated, a similar level of control for handling and use is in place for most other manufacturing sectors. “Changes to safety and environmental classifications and regulations for the inks used in product coding and marking, along with changing trends in packaging design and materials, create production headaches for manufacturers in a variety of industries. In-house ink innovation holds the answer,” Josie Harries – Domino’s ink development technology manager. If raw materials become unavailable due to supply chain issues or reclassification this could result in a lack of ink supply and cause an inability to code.

Consequently, this could lead to costly production stops and cause manufacturers to look for alternative coding solutions. Where specialist substrates or packaging are in use
or where special performance characteristics are required, sourcing new coding solutions can be a lengthy and costly exercise. “It might seem surprising to those out-
Coding and Marking
side the coding and marking sector that something so innocuous can have such an impact on throughput, profits and contractual compliance. This is why at Domino we recognize the importance of developing inks with agility with respect to supply chain processes,” said Harries.
The trends Product packaging is constantly evolving, and this has an impact on the suitability of existing inks and drives ink innovation. Current trends include an increased consumer focus on reducing single-use packaging which has hastened the introduction of more sustainable packaging – plastic alternatives—and a move towards products which can operate within a circular economy, designing out waste. Engaging with customers and studying market trends is key to producing innovative and reliable ink products solutions. For example, increasing numbers of organizations are seeking an ink that will prove durable and last the full lifetime of the product but can also be removed at the end-of-life point if it is to be recycled. This can be quite challenging, but Domino’s inks teams are currently focusing on innovative solutions for environmentally benign and sustainable inks as well as developing proof of concept designs to see how an ink’s environmental footprint can be reduced. Along with the knowledge and expertise Domino’s ink formulators have, the in-house analytical teams study the substrates of customers’ packaging and, using a variety of techniques, identify the right raw materials that will result in high-quality codes being printed. A further trend is the drive to improve product integrity to safeguard consumer confidence in the supply chain. There is an expectation that everyone involved in producing, processing, transporting and marketing goods is doing everything reasonable to prevent problems and ensure consumer safety. “Membership of EuPIA and other key industry-informing associations means that we consider the risks and undertake exposure assessments in accordance with internationally-recognised scientific principles. The principles of continuous improvement align with respect to consumer safety and being members of several interest groups ensures we can stay abreast of any impending market changes,” said Harries. Throughout the ink development process, it’s important to collect data such as individual compound make-ups and overall ink performance. It’s also important to keep up to date with upcoming regulatory changes to ensure ink compounds can be substituted with minimum disruption should a re-classification of an ink occur. By developing inks this way, customers can experience little or no disruption to their supply. In a world where quick ink development responses are required, automated systems with statistically designed experimentation mean that new or updated inks can be brought to market fast, reducing the risk of downtime for customers. The ability to build flexibility into the ink development process allows the provision for quick solutions to the ink challenges that stakeholders may face. z THE PACKMAN | Sep-OCT 2019
