he organizers of the Pentawards revealed this year’s winners during a virtual gala ceremony hosted live on Thursday, 24 September. The top winning agencies include Backbone Branding and Design Bridge, each with five awards, ShenZhen Lingyun Creative Packaging Design, Depot Branding Agency, Xiaomi, Estudio Maba, and Anthem, all of which won 4 awards. Founded in 2007, Pentawards is committed to recognizing excellence in design, providing a source of inspiration and connecting the global packaging community through its competition and events. This year’s winners will also be featured alongside the 2019 winners in The Package Design Book 6 by Taschen, released early 2021. The 2021 competition will open with Super-Early Bird rates on 1 February 2021. Our cover story highlights Bacardi’s move to 100% biodegradable bottles. Bacardi has made a giant leap forward in the fight against climate change and plastic pollution as it unveils plans to put the world’s most sustainable spirits bottle on shelf by 2023. The new 100% biodegradable bottle will replace 80 million plastic bottles – 3,000 tons of plastic – currently produced by Bacardi across its portfolio of brands every year. The move has been made possible by Bacardi’s collaboration with Danimer Scientific, a leading developer and manufacturer of biodegradable products. Petroleum-based plastics used by Bacardi today will be replaced by Danimer Scientific’s Nodax PHA, a biopolymer which derives from the natural oils of plant seeds such as palm, canola and soy. In October 2020, we made a plant visit to UFlex Cylinders Business. UFlex Cylinders Business is going through a solid transformation driven by innovations and unprecedented product quality. The company is focusing on moving the needle of the company from a large-scale cylinder manufacturing setup to something that is fairly asset-light – focused more on operational excellence and innovation. We talked with Parwez Izhar CEO – Cylinders Business and senior VP, UFlex to know about the latest innovations and future plans of UFlex Cylinders Business. Read the story on page 28. Delivering a ‘New, Better Normal’ to flexo users seeking insight into workflow mastery and print perfection is the mission of five industry leaders who’ve created FlexoKITE, an experience center where end-to-end product and procedural harmony is made practical. Packaging suppliers, brands, and retailers gain instant access to best practices in the full flexo print process via in-person demos and live webinars. Apex launched FlexoKITE with its partners to demonstrate state-of-the-art equipment at work – in real-time – from experience centers in India and Netherlands. FlexoKITE runs a fully-equipped integrated workflow of the latest-version equipment from Apex International (anilox), Bobst (inline flexo press), DuPont (plate, Cyrel Fast thermal platemaking equipment), Esko (prepress), and MacDermid (plate). The goods and services tax (GST) collected in October 2020 rose to Rs 1.05 lakh crore, up 10% from a year ago, and the highest recorded since February 2020. The government cited the collection as a ‘clear’ sign of a recovery in the economy after its 23.9% contraction in the first quarter of this year. However, economists and businesses are cautious about the sustainability of this trend. Lets hope for the best. daring brands can easily replicate this playful design for products going into the market. The idea is of a ghost that first made an appearance in 1916 that has been spotted in recent years on the shelves of liquor stores. To create this character, the design uses a deep indentation at the bottom of the bottle and adds a pair of ghostly eyes to it, while the glass creates a dark fog and mystical atmosphere.

Food Platinum, NongFu Wangtian by ShenZhen BOB design, China What struck the judges with this piece is the simplicity and effectiveness of the design. The creative idea of this product packaging is that by combining the shape of chili to the container, it brings the experience of picking chillis directly to the customer. Its distinctive and fun design will make it the first to be noticed on the shelves, enticing consumers to buy it to try it out and share it with friends and family.

Other Markets Platinum, Hema by Magnet Design, Netherlands This charming range of packaging for Dutch retailer Hema contains summer water inflatables. The design concept shows a range of summer products that look like they have been dropped into mini swimming pools, and there’s even a steel step that leads into the pool on the front, bringing the image to life. All toys have been designed exclusively by Hema and represent the retailer’s most famous icons like Hema’s smoked sausage, Takkie the Dog, tompouce pastry, and summer ice creams. Hema’s overall ambition is to stop putting plastic products into plastic packaging, so

Luxury Platinum, Hennessy by Felipe Pantone – Appartement 103, France Released globally at a limited quantity of 70 pieces, this Collector’s Edition from Hennessy was created in partnership with the world-renowned and pioneering street artist Felipe Pantone. The result of this collaboration is a super clean, shiny white PET box that, once opened, reveals the whole world of Felipe Pantone through a prism of graphical elements and textures. At the center of the experience, the consumer is invited to build their own art sculpture around a customized Hennessy V.S bottle, which is printed with the latest cutting-edge digital technologies in CMYK. The exclusive carafe stands on a pedestal in the center of a grid of moiré-finished rods that consumers themselves can place, move, and interchange to alter the bottle’s optics.

Body Platinum, Chioture by Shanghai Nianxiang Brand Design & Consulting, China This base makeup kit for Chioture, a vibrant and youthful makeup brand, focuses on the product’s unpacking process. Factoring in the brand’s simple and fun characteristics, an innovative design was used to effectively demonstrate the product’s features: a beautiful and adorable soft light camera. The user unscrews the ‘lens’ and then pulls out the ‘handle brush’ on the right, which can then be placed on the’ Brand Icon Viewfinder’ in the upper left corner of the camera if on the go.

z An extended color gamut specialist

Lorytex strikes packaging gold with flexo and ECG “W

e’re just trying to make flexo a little better every day,” says Roberto Dolinsky, managing director of Lorytex. The company has just achieved – a Gold Award in the inaugural Kodak Global Flexo Innovation Awards. Lorytex was also one of just four ‘Highest Honors’ winners, singled out for creative use of graphic design, production workflow efficiency and a commitment to sustainable print. What makes the achievement more notable is the fact that Lorytex is a relatively small operation, employing just nine people at its Montevideo base. With a population of 3.5 million, the Uruguayan market too is relatively small, but what it lacks in size it makes up for in competitiveness, says Dolinsky. “As in any other prepress market: you need to have something different, something that make you stand out from the competition.” In Lorytex’s case, that something is expertise in extended color gamut (ECG) printing. With ECG in the portfolio, the company can respond to the trends and challenges in today’s packaging market, where Dolinsky describes the prevailing conditions as “constant technological change. This is nothing new, of course. Neither are the ever-shorter production runs and tighter delivery schedules. Our strategy is to optimize and automate production, and ECG fits the bill perfectly. With it we can offer something really different to converters – increased productivity, economical handling of short runs, plus the option of combining jobs.”

30% faster turnaround

and, says Dolinsky, “have closely-aligned objectives.” How close becomes clear when you consider the background to the ECG project, which came about when Ecoflex too sought something to differentiate themselves from competitors – in this case, improved efficiencies, faster deliveries, and genuine innovation.

The award-winning entry, produced for flexible packaging client Ecoflex SA, vividly demonstrated what’s possible with ECG: a turnaround time that was 30% faster, significant savings on ink consumption, plus brand-pleasing image quality and overall visual impact, all achieved on Ecoflex’s press.

For Lorytex, the decision signaled the start of a twoyear programme to evaluate the potential of ECG and, if things stacked up, implement the technology. “We invested a lot into ECG,” recalls Dolinsky. “Putting the pieces together involved a lot of learning, and a lot of overseas travel for training. We had to be sure we were doing things properly.”

Lorytex and Ecoflex have worked together since 2011

with other converters in Uruguay that are currently evaluating the use of ECG technology because of its proven improvements and cost savings.

Efficient, automated, reliable “That meant having all the components for the most efficient, automated and reliable set-up possible, including high-quality color management – and, of course, the right plate technology. In fact, investing in the Kodak Flexcel NX solution was the very first decision we made. It’s reliable, fast and gave us the trusted foundation technology around which we could add the other technologies.” At the end of the process Lorytex developed a series of optimization tests, backed by a detailed methodology,

Prepress and Software and rolled it out to the client over a two-month period. “We convinced them that factors such as registration and spot colors wouldn’t be issues. It helped a lot that they were totally committed to the project.” This way of working is typical of the company’s approach, because building close links with customers is central to the Lorytex culture. “In this sense, it helps that Uruguay is a small country,” says Dolinsky. “Over half the population are in and around Montevideo,

so we don’t have to travel far to visit customers and prospects. On most projects, we get involved right at the start, at the design stage. This is important with flexo, because the process is new territory for creatives used to working in offset. If we understand what the designer and the brand want the packaging to communicate, we can apply our knowledge of the technology to achieve the best results. We also like to be involved in pre-production meetings with the converters; we learn a lot from them, and they help us

have everything in place before production.” Asked how brands and converters regard flexo, he says the benefits are becoming more widely known, but that there’s still work to be done. “ECG will provide a boost. When we demonstrate how efficient the process is, and the quality results possible, there’s real interest. So much so, that I believe as much as 50% of packaging could be produced using flexo and ECG.” z

ll stakeholders in the packaging value chain can enjoy an enhanced user experience, with even greater speed and efficiency, now Esko has unveiled its WebCenter 20.0. The latest feature-packed version of the company’s powerful and secure web-based packaging management and collaboration platform manages all aspects of packaging and label production for brands and their print suppliers. “With WebCenter 20.0, we set out with a goal of making prepress processes considerably faster while delivering a 25 per cent increase in performance,” said Roman Stepchuck, product manager. WebCenter cemented its reputation as the go-to solution in the industry through its ability to streamline approval and project lifecycles, removing bottlenecks that are most commonly associated with the packaging development process. WebCenter 20.0 includes new and additional support for end-to-end color workflow for brands and their suppliers – Color Trace. Brand owners can create color specifications directly in WebCenter and communicate them to their printers, who use ColorCert software from X-Rite to report a scorecard of the final production. “We’ve also introduced an ‘Ad Hoc Approver’ func-

tion,” said Roman. “When users want to send a file for approval, but the recipient is not a user of WebCenter, that no longer matters. In WebCenter 20.0, files can be sent directly to an external email address – they can even be forwarded on to other parties for approval, depending on permissions – saving countless valuable lost hours in the approval process.” “With WebCenter 20.0, we have introduced a new dashboard where users can create a personalized view of their activities,” added Paul. “We’re making the complex simple! Having introduced a huge amount of functionality over the years, we’re now enabling users to switch on and off individual features. This will simplify and tailor the experience, ensuring they have easy access and navigation to all the information relevant to them in one place,” said Paul Land, product manager. “WebCenter was already compatible with Adobe Illustrator,” he explained, “but with the new ‘WebCenter Tasks Plugin’, WebCenter 20.0 is also compatible with InDesign and Photoshop too. In just a few clicks, users can open, edit and upload changes, significantly streamlining the entire process.” Other additional new modules include ‘Cloud Archiving’, providing almost limitless storage and freeing up valuable space for businesses, and ‘Interactive Text

Compare’, a new software tool which checks copy against core data ensuring no issues arise when copying files across. Available from 21 September 2020 onwards – late October for SaaS customers – WebCenter 20.0 is free to Esko Software Care Plan customers. Anyone wishing to learn more about WebCenter 20.0 can do so by visiting the new Esko Innovation Hub which has been designed to provide users with a unique insight to the Esko Software 20 portfolio of innovations in a virtual environment. z

angalore-based VeePee Arts Studio, a leading player in prepress and flexo plates, has installed a Esko CDI Spark 4835 digital flexo imager. Jai Prakash, CEO, VeePee Arts Studio, said, “Plate manufacturers now a days are putting all efforts in matching the flat top dot technology – the digital lams plate technology has witnessed a sea change. New hybrid flat top engineered plates with the CDI Lams technology has its own benefits. To reap these benefits and to cater to more printing segments and clients,VeePee Arts has taken the decision for investment in the Esko CDI.” “The CDI Spark 4835 images digital flexo plates up to 48 x 35 inch or 1200 x 900 mm size. It comes with Easy Clamp for fast and most convenient plate loading

on the vacuum drum. Now clients in print segments of flexo, labels, flexibles, corrugation, letterpress, label printers, decorators of plastic cups, cans, and tubes and aluminum cans can expect more in terms of quality and services from VeePee Arts,” Prakash added. Jai Prakash further added that as part of its diversification plans, VeePee Arts was one of the few prepress houses to appreciate and adopt the cutting edge flat top technology pioneered by Kodak for the flexo prepress segment. Now widely recognized world over, this technology from Kodak has set new benchmark levels. Gravure print technology, the only option which dominated the packaging segment, started seeing stiff competition from flexo printing technology. z

everal thousand registrations from more than 100 countries, several hundred one-to-one discussions arranged with decision-makers, and around 100,000 hits on videos – that is the upshot of the five-day Innovation Week held by Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg). Taking ‘Unfold your potential’ as its slogan, the online event focused on transferring knowledge relating to the urgent issues in the sector. With product presentations on its latest highlights, innovation talks, and personal discussions via video chat, Heidelberg provided a comprehensive overview of its offerings in the commercial, label, and packaging segments. “The feedback we have received so far from participants and our partners has been truly overwhelming,” says Ludwig Allgoewer, head of global sales and marketing at Heidelberg. “The participants praised the format and the content presented.” The combination of short, professionally produced videos and innovation talks with the option of follow-up live chats in which the content presented could be discussed in more detail with around 300 Heidelberg experts from around the world went down well with the participants. “As a result, Heidelberg was able to register specialist customer contacts on a similar scale to an international trade show. We are confident that the numerous customer discussions will also generate business contracts in the near future.”

End-to-end production in the spotlight At the heart of all the presentations was the optimization of the entire process in offset and digital printing, all the way through to end-to-end production. This is based on the enhanced Push to Stop technology with all its facets, including automatic optimization of job sequences and navigated printing, accompanied by user-friendliness for operators thanks to easy-tounderstand user interfaces, all of which – combined

with ‘integrated intelligence’ – enables highly productive operations with fewer staff and skilled personnel. Heidelberg also provided supplementary information about offerings in the fields of Prinect workflow, consumables, and contract business. This did not focus on presenting individual product functions, but rather on responding to the most urgent customer requirements in the respective market segments. “The priority is no longer simply achieving the highest possible printing speed – instead we aim to make the entire process as efficient as possible. Boosting productivity offers the greatest earnings capacity for

industrial print shops. Digitization is key to this – and that is precisely what we demonstrated at Innovation Week,” says Heidelberg CEO Rainer Hundsdörfer. “The response to our Innovation Week underlines how it is possible to use digital formats to successfully contact customers and get them excited about innovations, even in the middle of a global pandemic.” All the content and videos from Innovation Week, much of it for download, continues to be available for all registered customers and other interested parties. z New press with a host of brand new features

Domino unveils N730i digital label press

D

omino Printing Sciences has announced the launch of the Domino N730i digital label press This is a ground-up development and the first to use its new Domino Generation 7 inkjet platform. Philip Easton, director of the Domino Digital Printing Solutions division, said, “This is the most significant new product we have launched since we started in the digital label press business. It has been a huge collaborative team effort, spread over five years, involving our colleagues at Brother Industries, supplier partners, our development team and our existing customers. Today, we are so proud of what the N730i delivers, as we truly believe it is setting new standards in high-performance inkjet label printing.” According to Domino, the N730i incorporates a host of brand new features including the Brother BITSTARTM 1200dpi piezo print head, the SunLight graphical user interface, and the latest automated Domino i-Tech intelligent Technology features i-Tech SetAlign and i-Tech CleanCap2. Louise Adcock, global product manager at Domino Digital Printing Solutions, said, “We have almost 1,000 global installations already using our existing Generation 6 inkjet platform. During the development of the N730i, we really listened to our customers, so we are confident that this press will enable label converters to get the best return from their digital printing investment. Based on customer feedback, we focused on three key areas – providing consistent print quality at high speed, ease of use and flexibility.” The company claims, unlike other systems where higher printing speed is at the cost of reduced print quality or reliability, the N730i is designed to print all jobs, including those with ‘silk-screen-like’ white at 70 m (230ft)/min, but still with the same consistent high print quality. The Brother BITSTARTM 1200 dpi print head uses a combination of the smallest drop sizes of 2.1 pl and

nominal drop sizes of 2.8 pl and 3.3 pl to provide consistent ink density across the image, with sharper edges and smoother gradients. Patented triple-layer polycrystalline micro piezo technology minimizes cross talk and delivers precise nozzle control for optimum drop placement accuracy. Domino’s unique intelligent Technology or i-Tech features represent developments designed to measurably improve efficiency, use, function and reliability. i-Tech SetAlign is a new automated system that sets density and accurately aligns the print heads. The result is uniform and seamless print quality across the full web width. Domino has also enhanced performance with i-Tech CleanCap2, an automated print head cleaning and capping system, which is a controlled process reducing manual operator intervention and waste. Other i-Tech features include the established i-Tech ActiFlow, UltraMix, and WebRev. Louise said, “In basic terms, our customers win business against their competitors on the labels they can produce, they make a profit from delivering them efficiently. The N730i’s consistent high print quality will mean they will win more business, while high speed combined with reliability means they can also print it efficiently.” The existing user interface has been completely rewritten for the N730i with the development of the new Domino SunLight. This flexible graphical user interface with its modern look and feel is completely intuitive and highly configurable. A new enhanced version of the industry-standard Esko Digital Front End has been adopted, including improved variable data printing performance, and producing process colors including orange and violet, for lower ink usage and an increased color gamut. Support for the industrystandard JDF/JMF data transfer format allows for automated job set-up and reporting. This also means upward integration with the leading management information systems can be readily achieved.

Domino N730i digital label press

Offering label printers maximum flexibility, the N730i is available with optional flexo stations for priming to facilitate consistent quality even on the most challenging media types, and for spot colors or varnishing, increasing the range of jobs that can be achieved, or for reverse white for cost-effective shrink sleeve applications. These flexo stations can be retrofitted, providing our customers with greater flexibility as their business needs change. The N730i includes Domino’s own in-house developed UV90 ink set with excellent fade resistance, achieving a maximum Blue Wool Scale of eight on certain substrates. It has mechanical properties including abrasion and scratch resistance. The UV90 white ink is commonly used by customers as a silk-screen replacement achieving an opacity of up to 76%. The Textures by Domino printing capability enables tactile three-dimensional label design effects to be created for greater shelf appeal. Philip concludes, “When we introduced our N600i and then the N610i digital label presses, our focus was to be as good as flexo. With the N730i, we believe we are offering a quality of output that sets a new highperformance inkjet standard, and perhaps now flexo needs to start catching up.” z THE PACKMAN | nov-dec 2020

functions. The capability of printing personalized unique information on a pack or label now provides new security capabilities, with validation that an identifier is genuine through a database look up. Multichannel marketing could leverage other interactive platforms, like augmented reality or QR codes, for specific marketing campaigns or for certain regions. The reasons why brand owners, retailers and other users of printed packaging are taking these new capabilities seriously is that they are fundamental to a competitive future business for end users of print,” said Kamat.

Expansion in marketing opportunities “Marketing department will be attracted by the expansion in marketing opportunities accessible through digital printing, such as versioning, targeted marketing, personalization, customization, regionalization, special editions, consumer empathy, and interactive packaging such as QR coding. One example comes from Erdington, owner of the famous grouse whiskey brand. The famous grouse ran a make someone famous campaign, in which a personalized photo label could be applied to a bottle ordered online. The limited edition campaign ran during 2013-14. The company’s

website still offers personalized gift packs, in which the recipient’s name can be added to the front of the gift box, and a message to the back,” said Kamat.

Personalized experience “Retail continues to change at a dramatic pace. Rise of e-commerce and demand for personalized experience call for new approaches to packaging. It is on this basis that technologies like digital print have merged as enablers: allowing brand owners to offer the mass customization of products, for instance. Other print for packaging technologies like augmented reality have also emerged, linking physical products with the digital world where many younger consumers are comfortable and more easily engaged with the product,” said Kamat. “Finally, there is the need to implement and nurture the innovation, to ensure it is well executed and delivers the change that was promised in the business case. Konica Minolta for instance, couples a range of proven digital print systems with a full programme of support services – including business planning, marketing planning, sales training, business development and more – to facilitate the adoption of digital print for packaging applications,” concluded Kamat. z

z An interview with Parwez Izhar of uflex

UFlex Cylinders Business focuses on innovation and operational excellence UFlex Cylinders Business is going through a solid transformation driven by innovations and unprecedented product quality. We recently met with Parwez Izhar CEO – Cylinders Business and senior VP, UFlex to know about the latest innovations and future plans of UFlex Cylinders Business. Here is an excerpt from the interview.

U

Flex Cylinders Business is going through a solid transformation driven by innovations and unprecedented product quality. “We have been trying to move the needle of the company from a large-scale cylinder manufacturing setup to something that is fairly asset-light – focused more on operational excellence and innovation,” said Parwez Izhar CEO – Cylinders Business and senior VP, UFlex. “Our R&D team has been innovating and introducing new products and services ensuring that all our products are up-to-date with the latest market trends.”

Low GSM water-based cylinders Izhar shared that some of the products introduced by UFlex Cylinders Business are observing a surge in demand. One such product is low GSM laser cylinders for water-based inks. “Low GSM laser cylinders are high in demand these days. With these cylinders, we have thrown up new business opportunities for customers who are looking for green and cost-effective solutions. All these cylinders are produced on our fully automatic robotic laser engraving line,” Izhar said. The robotic cylinder plant at UFlex offers cylinders with unparalleled performance. UFlex’s robotic plant can produce up to 80 rotogravure cylinders every day. The plant is equipped with the best in class automation and can be operated by a single operator. The cylinders produced are dynamically balanced and can run up to a speed of 500 m/minute on a rotogravure press. This line produces high definition results and has a re-production capability of 6,400 dpi which is not attainable through the conventional electro-mechanical

engraving process. UFlex plans to set up another robotic line to expand its business and to make room for that, it will evaluate shifting its existing embossing line to another location.

printing, low VOC and low running cost, I strongly believe that the demand for these cylinders is going to be high in domestic as well as in the international markets. Queries are coming in from all corners of the globe at the moment.”

Bright future ahead Keeping an optimistic vision with the advent of low GSM laser engraved cylinders, Izhar said, “Since a lot of R&D effort has been going on in the development of water-based inks which facilitates eco-friendly

In low GSM laser engraved rotogravure cylinders, cell structures of the cylinders are optimized to an extent that can result in about 15-20% reduction in consumption of ink than the electro-mechanically engraved

Flexibles counterpart to render the same image resolution and enhancement. Izhar explained, “In the printing industry, ink is one of the most expensive consumables. If we can reduce even 10-15% ink wastage, it can result in substantial savings. “In addition, a laser engraved rotogravure cylinder produces much enhanced and high definition images as compared to an electro-mechanically engraved cylinder. Also, the life of the laser engraved rotogravure cylinder is higher compared to conventional cylinders, which is also a big advantage. Today, laser engraved rotogravure cylinders produced on the robotic line are most suitable for anti-counterfeiting and brand protection solutions and, for the same reason, they are in high demand. Unique security features such as the holo lens effect can be ingrained on these cylinders.”

Laser-embossed cylinders for hand-embossed effect Another innovation by UFlex Cylinders Business is the laser-embossed rotogravure cylinder. According to Izhar, these cylinders are ahead of the curve. We have been able to create new business opportunities in the area of embossing technology. For laser-embossed cylinders, UFlex has one of the latest 3D scanners from Germany and laser etching systems from Switzerland. A unique embossing effect made possible by UFlex on these cylinders is the hand-embossed effect. The company is targeting a niche market with this product and is already witnessing an upsurge in demand in the domestic as well as international markets. “Hand-embossed effect on rotogravure cylinders is much popular in China where it is done manually. Manual engraving is a time-consuming process; however, hand engraving is proficiency with labors in China. Of late, due to the strained India-China relationship recently, Indian customers who were earlier looking up to China for hand-embossed effects are now scouting for vendors and suppliers in India. In India, UFlex has started producing laser-embossed cylinders with handembossed effects. Getting a hand-embossed effect on a table cover, car sheet, cover, curtain, etc. has been made possible with the launch of laser-embossed cylinders by UFlex. Since we are in the initial phase, the volume is low but the interest for hand-embossed cylinders is on an upsurge,” said Izhar.

sheets are used in home interiors and out of home applications like decorations of modular kitchen, false ceiling, corporate signboards, lift and metro wall, etc. Due to increased demand for these cylinders, we are in the process of ramping up our capacity to meet the increased demand. “In addition, for the first time, we have started making cylinders for bulk textile printing which was again an area where China had always displayed its expertise. So, with the help of our R&D team, we have set up our engraving parameters to achieve the desired effect on the textile,” said Izhar.

Special effects through specialized cylinders “We are the pioneers in making specialized cylinders. We developed special effects like glitter printing for gift wraps and textured embossing on artificial leather (PU/PVC). These products are in very high demand in the European and the US markets,” said Izhar.

Automated chrome plating on rotogravure cylinder UFlex Cylinders Business has installed a new automated chrome plating line for Rotogravure cylinders. “The manual chrome plating line that we had since long has completed its product life cycle. Hence the need to replace it with an automatic line was felt. With the automated line in place, efficiency, consistency and quality of the cylinders have improved multi-folds. The

new line can produce 200 cylinders per day,” said Izhar.

Lean tools In a view to reduce waste, improve efficiency, eliminate non-value added work and ensure better material flow, the Cylinders Business at UFlex has implemented lean tools. Some of the lean tools implemented are Value Stream Mapping, Kaizen, 5s+S, Set Up Reduction, Poka Yoke, TIMWOOD, JIT, Visual Management and TPM.

COVID-19 challenges “Lockdown was an unprecedented experience for all of us and nobody was prepared for it. As soon as the lockdown was announced, there was a serious disruption in our operations because of the supply chain challenges – products were ready but we were not able to dispatch it. However, we managed to overcome this challenge without much delay as our products fall under the essential products category. Another challenge was about getting the workforce into the factory and re-organizing the factory keeping social distancing norms in mind. Our focus was always to keep our workforce safe and healthy. During this difficult time, our visionary chairman and managing director supported and motivated us to work hard so that our products could reach our customers on time,” concluded Izhar. z – Manash Das

z flexible packaging trends

The future is now – partner with a flexible packaging company W

alk down pretty much any passageway at your neighborhood supermarket or grocery store, and you will discover it overflowing with an assortment of packaging structures. Boxes of grain, packs of chips, pockets of granola, containers of milk, containers of nutty spread. These more customary packaging structures are what we have come to know and expect with specific items. In any case, things on the path are moving. As more shoppers share their interests in nature and as more brands react, while additionally attempting to separate themselves from their rivals, we are seeing more creative and supportable packaging, for example, flexible food packaging – ketchup in an altered stand-up pouch; nut butter and oils in individual serving size pouches; shampoo in travel-size pouches; soup and broth in a resealable stand-up pouch. Flexible packaging, because of its advantageous shape, convenience, resealable properties, lightweight, and natural effect contrasted with its inflexible partners, is advancing into the spotlight to an ever-increasing extent, having its spot as the eventual fate of bundling. As indicated by the 2019 Flexible Packaging Marketing Assessment by PMMI, The Association for Packaging and Processing Technologies, flexible packaging represents 19% of the general packaging market and is required to develop at a pace of 3.9% CAGR by 2023. PMMI’s appraisal additionally expresses that “convenient packaging, sustainable materials, excellent barrier properties, and growing customer base for fast-moving consumer products and consumer durable in emerging countries are driving this expansion.” Increasingly, more consumer-packaged-goods brands

are finding that utilizing flexible packaging enables their item to stand apart in the competition, bringing about more buyer intrigue and eventually, leading to a purchase. Brands adopting flexible packaging into their portfolio are making products easy to store, display handle, and ship. There are plenty of reasons why we think flexible packaging is turning into a preferred way of packaging consumer packaged goods (CPG). However, we limited these reasons to the best fives.

Convenience and portability Consumer demand does not seem to be slowing down in near future. The relentless way of life is changing the way brand owners are approaching product packaging to fulfill these demands. Comfort is one of the essential points adding to the essence of flexible packaging. The flexible packaging association reports that customers value flexible packaging as it is easy to store and easy to open, in addition to its resealability. The lightweight design of flexible packaging has an

Flexibles edge over other choices like plastic or glass. The safe and unbreakable nature of flexible packaging ensures product longevity; and being lightweight makes the packaging handy. Buyers need their packaging to spare them time and vitality, and flexible packaging delivers.

Extended shelf life A regularly ignored advantage of plastic is its capacity to eliminate food waste, another worldwide global issue that we are confronting. Although plastic contamination has not received much positive attention, plastic packaging for food can help nature by eliminating food waste. Couple that with the way that flexible packaging has a lot lesser carbon footprint thus reducing the overall impact on the environment. With high-barrier films, and impermeable seals, highly perishable items like jerky and cheddar, are kept safe from oxygen and dampness. This ensures product freshness for long, which implies less food ends up in the landfill. The reseal innovation of flexible packaging additionally guarantees that the food items stay fresh over multiple uses. Fresh products imply less thrown away products by the shopper and stores, because of waste. This works in all business sectors from oats to nuts, from fresh fruits to vegetables, all to keep the products fresh for long.

Transportation and storage The lightweight property of flexible packaging helps in reducing the number of truckloads to deliver, also reducing storage space as compared to products packed in rigid packaging. For instance, juice packed in flexible packaging weighs far less and occupies less room than that equivalent juice packed in glass bottles. Less weight and less space mean less gas required for transportation, which implies a lesser carbon footprint. Extra space on and off the rack is also a primary reason for brands to move to flexible packaging. Unfilled pouches occupy far less room in a stockroom office than glass containers, jars, or boxes, and filled pouches take up less space on the significant rack.

Design capabilities Flexible packaging considers high-caliber and highimpact graphics in 360-degree branding that conveys brilliant and clear plans, all of which influence improving the brand image. The remarkable design capacities have permitted flexible packaging to stand out in markets by catching customer’s attention. Brand owners who are willing to upgrade the overall

Flexible packaging is turning into a preferred way of packaging consumer packaged goods

image of the brand can do so by designing the packaging. Flexible packaging, particularly when created with digital print technology, not only enhances the picture quality of the graphics on high-end films but also surpasses the design goals.

Recyclable packaging Recycling of multilayer packaging is a complex and expensive task since plastic packaging frequently uses a wide variety of different polymers and other materials such as metals, paper, pigments, inks and adhesives that increases the difficulties. Multilayer packaging could be recycled to a limited extent as mechanical recycling processes are not suitable for composite materials. In this fast pacing world where everyone’s shoulders are laden with piles of work and responsibilities, people expect ease and convenience in handling even small stuff and packaging is one among them. Mono-layer packaging is one of the considerable future trends in the continually evolving packaging sector. It is not conducive only to cut down the logistic cost by reducing the weight of cost but may also slaughter the packaging and recycling cost. In addition to mono-layer packaging with barrier coatings that can potentially protect the food products with every possible damage likely to occur with food packaging, provides massive opportunities to the packaging design as well as other stakeholders of the supply chain to discover innovative solutions.

Barrier coatings are a worth-exploring segment in the packaging world holding huge business potential. Yansefu Inks & Coatings is strenuously reconnoitering this particular division since we always strive to provide the best solutions to satisfy the requirements of our customers in one place.

Circular economy Circular economy is the most extensively discussed topic in the packaging industry these days. Since this model is the only prominent solution to the global problem of plastic waste management. The regenerative strategy of ‘make, use, reuse and recycle’ emphasizes on minimizing the resource input and waste, emission, and energy leakage by slowing, closing, and narrowing energy consumption and wastage, while increasing efficiency of available resources. Many big stakeholders and brand owners are taking initiatives to boost the circular economy by reducing plastic packaging waste to a possible extent. And Yansefu not only supports these initiatives but also making their efforts to contribute to this venture. Regardless of whether you are an early adopter of flexible packaging or thinking about the move for your brand, flexible packaging is the future. – JK Sharma President Marketing and Sales, Yansefu Inks & Coating

Windmöller & Hölscher – Packaging 4.0 and digitalization

W

indmöller & Hölscher, a specialist for flexible packaging manufacturing machinery, has envisioned Packaging 4.0 to create intelligent machines, integrated processes, and intuitive operations. The advancement in automation has witnessed the fastest upward trends in manufacturing today and the company believes automation is the key to achieve consistent film quality and high production. Automation and digitalization are indispensable for the flexible packaging industry as a lot of packaging players demand data for materials delivered to them. The benefit of automation is reduced energy consumption; product quality; user-friendliness; material saving; Streamline processing and efficient data management. W&H has already developed key automation modules to facilitate these concepts efficiently. However, the biggest challenge is product development as such activities demand a lot of support from suppliers and customers to the flexible packaging producers. Key insights into materials and supply chains are required along with heavy investment which often flexible packaging producers have to bear. Software makes W&H machines smarter and more efficient through automated processes, error detection, and quality assurance. W&H has constantly worked towards digitalization and developed automation to reduce human intervention and errors. For example, Ruby – the new IoT system combines collecting and monitoring data with W&H process knowledge to optimize the production process in all three focus areas of W&H – extrusion, printing, and converting – from productivity increase to quality management. Ruby delivers real-time information and data sources from the whole value chain. The company has introduced two new automation systems designed to cut down on machine starts, stops, and changeover times while also reducing waste. The Turbo Start automation system can stop and restart the machinery in less than 15 minutes

while the DCW automates die adjustments on cast film lines to make width and thickness changes, reducing changeover times and scrap by up to 70 percent. Easy Change offers format changeover quickly, accurately, and smoothly. Profile Booster offers profile tolerance control; Turboclean – fast recipe change. Preventive maintenance automation digitalizes preventive maintenance schedules in the machine operating screen with real-time notifications ensuring high-quality production; extends machine up-time, setting up the reminder for service lubrication, cleaning, and maintenance of jobs through visualization to accomplish a longer machine lifetime. In addition to new machine technologies, changing societal and business environment prompt demand for sustainable solutions – an amalgamation of keeping both the environment and product safe. For an array of existing packaging solutions to become sustainable it needs to transform the existing non-recyclable structure into a recyclable single-family structure.

Due to the versatile nature of PP and PE for flexible packaging solutions, single-family structures can be developed using these materials. Single-family solutions require R&D, high-end machinery with better supply chain upgradations. Recently, major brand owners have made commitment goals moving towards a circular economy. The European and US markets have already started implementing new machine infrastructure, especially for sustainable solutions. In this regard, the company has introduced a new solution as a starting point – an all PE stand up pouch – designed for recyclability, packaging performance, and production efficiency. Although sustainability remains a key industry-shaping trend globally from retailers playing a vital role in driving demand for more sustainable packaging in the supply chain, pre-Covid approaches will not be enough to address it. W&H is committed to improving packaging solutions incrementally so that products have a better sustainability profile along with additional requirements such as cost, performance and convenience. z

Brilliant Polymers – How to emerge stronger from COVID-19? D

espite the COVID-19 pandemic, Brilliant Polymers expects to grow at over 15% in the current financial year (April 2020 to March 2021). Businesses today are faced with unprecedented challenges as they continue to navigate the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic is changing the way we live, work and use technology. As the world adjusts to its new normal, business leaders need to rethink strategies to drive resilience and emerge from this crisis stronger. We need to turn this massive challenge into meaningful change so we can survive and thrive. Brilliant Polymers has adapted to the on-going crisis by focusing on the following key areas:

“In addition to our employees, we believe that we have a responsibility to the community in which we operate. In the days after the pandemic struck, members of our team ventured into the local community and made donations of food staples and hygiene products to the most vulnerable. Our CSR team continues to evaluate and pursue initiatives to safeguard the lives and livelihoods of those most affected in our community,” said Talwar.

Safety first

Embracing a digital future

“Employee and customer safety is a priority. We immediately implemented a work- from -home policy for all non-essential team members. In the first week of April, the government listed packaging and its ancillary raw materials as ‘essential service’ sectors; with this, we were able to restart our operations to meet the demands of the flexible packaging industry. Our laminating adhesives form an integral part of flexible packaging which in turn is essential for the packaging of food, consumer goods and pharmaceuticals,” says Gaurav Talwar, managing director, Brilliant Polymers.

The future of work, defined by the use of more automation and technology, was always coming; COVID-19 has hastened the pace. Brilliant employees across all functions have learned how to complete tasks remotely using digital communication and collaboration tools. Communication has been ramped up significantly with daily updates and interactions and among team members.

“Only key members of our operations team and frontline plant workers have been permitted to be physically present at our site and various measures have been implemented to safeguard the health and safety of those present. Regular toolbox training sessions are held in accordance with the latest Ministry of Health guidelines and personal protective equipment such as masks and sanitizers are available to all staff. Clear

Customer service and technical support has also shifted to a digital platform to ensure uninterrupted and clear communication with our customers and to facilitate an understanding of their shifting needs. “In the initial stages of the lockdown, product trials were run through virtual support; now, as we move into the unlock phase, in some states we are able to offer local support as well, backed up with virtual support from team leaders. Frequent and clear communication ensures that our promise of technology, quality and service with every supply is upheld,” said Talwar.

One of the eight finished goods warehouses of Brilliant Polymer across India

Building operational resilience “Our business model encompasses geographical diversification in the form of countrywide and international depots and stock points to mitigate regional risks. This has enabled us to maintain steady and timely supplies of our adhesives to customers throughout the lockdown despite localized restrictions. Brilliant Polymers is reassessing supply chains to protect against a wider and more acute range of potential shocks. We have acted quickly to re-balance our global supply chain as new technologies and consumer-demand patterns encourage regionalization of supply. We expect this trend to accelerate,” said Talwar.

Agile operating model “The pandemic has strengthened our commitment to

Flexibles maintaining an efficient feedback loop whereby new information is used to drive strategic decision-making and quick response times. We believe that future business success will depend on the ability to adapt to the unexpected or improbable. In the days after the pandemic struck, we focused on our product range to ensure that all products were in stock, all the time, in order to meet customer demand. In the first few months, there was an unprecedented demand for laminating adhesives due to high demand from the flexible packaging sector; most food, consumer goods and other FMCG item supply chains had been de-

stocked, plus with the population at home, there was large scale demand. We increased our manufacturing capacity to meet this demand and saw record levels of production and sales in July 2020. Thereafter the trend has somewhat stabilized, though we see similar cycles playing out in many of our exports markets, leading to a continuous flow of orders,” Talwar said. It is clear that the pandemic is transforming our social and economic lives, paving the way for a new normal. It has demonstrated the importance of digital collaboration in a period of global self-isolation. While

the priority remains to ensure everyone is safe, a crisis of this scale reveals not just vulnerabilities, but also opportunities to learn and adapt. “It has forced us to re-imagine our business models, not just for shortterm survival, but for long-term resilience. Our team is fast adapting to the new normal and ensuring that we support the increased demand. We believe that this ability to pivot and adapt to the new normal will enable us to continue to be the market leader in our industry,” concluded Talwar. z

Yansefu launches bio-based anti-blocking additive for printing inks Y

ansefu has introduced a high-performance bio-based anti-blocking additive, SarjoaddABA, to be incorporated with printing inks and coatings to provide outstanding characteristics including blocking resistance, abrasion resistance, adequate slip to the surface, water repellence, improved texture and more. The high-performance additive, especially designed using natural raw materials, improves adhesion without affecting the bond strength of printing inks and coatings.

“Bio-based Sarjoadd-ABA possesses excellent blooming tendency – this means, when the applied coatings containing our anti-blocking additive is exposed to a temperature of nearly 40 to 45°C, the molten wax particles float or bloom to the surface. Those wax particles get recrystallized on the surface when the coating cools down, forming out a thin but continuous wax-enriched surface layer to impart the desired properties. Usually, lower the melting point, softer the wax and more predominant the blooming mechanism,” adds Sharma.

JK Sharma, CEO, Yansefu India provides some insight into the chemistry of waxes: “Amide waxes are extensively used as lubricants in the printing inks and coatings industry. These waxes are simple lipids consisting of fatty acids that react with amines and diamines. Waxes are generally used to enhance the slip property in inks and coatings, thereby reducing blocking and abrasion potential while beautifying the texture of the coatings.”

“The major advantage of the new anti-blocking additive is that it is composed of bio-based raw materials, making the material to be more eco-friendly. Another important characteristics of Sarjoadd-ABA is that it is versatile in nature, means the use of this wax is not limited to a certain resin system but it is greatly compatible with almost all the resin systems available for printing inks formulation. This is a very unique and important feature of the product,” concluded Sharma. z

Bacardi portfolio to move to 100% biodegradable bottles B

acardi has made a giant leap forward in the fight against climate change and plastic pollution as it unveils plans to put the world’s most sustainable spirits bottle on shelf by 2023. According to Bacarddi, the new spirits bottle made from Nodax PHA will biodegrade in a wide range of environments, including compost, soil, freshwater and sea water, and after 18 months disappear without leaving behind harmful microplastics. Bacardi rum will be the first spirit to appear in the new bottle, before the plant-based material is rolled out to replace single-use plastic across the entire Bacardi supply chain and the company’s 200 brands and labels including BOMBAY SAPPHIRE gin, GREY GOOSE vodka, PATRÓN tequila, MARTINI vermouth and DEWAR’S Scotch whisky. “When we set ourselves the goal of being 100% plastic free by 2030, we knew that it would take groundbreaking advances in packaging design to make it achievable, and that’s exactly what’s happening through our partnership with Danimer.” Jean-Marc Lambert, senior vice president, global operations for Bacardi. “It may sound small, but add that up across every bottle produced globally and we’re talking many

Mondi and BIOhof replace plastic wrapping M

ondi, a leading global packaging and paper manufacturer, has collaborated with BIOhof Kirchweidach, an organic farm in Bavaria, to design a sustainable packaging solution for 500 gram packs of tomatoes on the vine to be distributed to Penny supermarkets, owned by major German retailer Rewe Group. Coral Tray fulfills BIOhof’s objective of replacing its previous packaging, which used 2.5 gram of plastic film per pack, with a recyclable and plastic-free solution, supporting Rewe Group’s sustainability goals. It’s called ‘Coral Tray’ because of its resemblance to undersea coral and contribution to reducing plastic waste, potentially helping to protect marine life. This innovative new packaging is fully recyclable and made of renewable material and recycled corrugated board, which has an average recycling rate of over 80% in Europe. Packaging experts at Mondi Grünburg in Austria worked with BIOhof’s team to design the one-piece corrugated tray with integrated lid made of lightweight F-Flute. Both the fluting and outer liner are made of 100% recycled material and the KraftTop inner liner ensures it meets food contact requirements. The new solution can be mechanized for up to six different package sizes and gives BIOhof the option of using it for other small organic produce. “At Mondi we are committed to being sustainable by design and were delighted to work with BIOhof to help expand their portfolio of sustainable packaged products. The Coral Tray offers great shelf appeal. Mondi’s expertise ensured the perfect balance was struck between good consumer view of the product inside, tray stability for stacking during transport and perfect stiffness for mechanisation,” said Jan Blankiewicz, product innovation manager at Mondi Corrugated Solutions.

GI glaspac, a leading global manufacturer of integrated container-glass, inaugurated its new plant work on 9 November 2020. The company has also announced that with the manufacturing of speciality glass, the company foresees topline growth in its revenue by not less than 15-18% by 2022-23. The company last week raised an investment of INR 220 crores to manufacture special glass for premium segments, such as cosmetics, perfumery, personal care, carbonated water and high-end spirits. These special glasses require an additional layer of printing decoration, design and detailing work, which is possible only using specific technologies. AGI glaspac aims to attract further investment to complete the work. For the printing design and decoration of the speciality glass, AGI glaspac will evaluate engaging with Indian start-ups that can meet the international standards of printing and decoration. The company has been serving its customers in the liquor, wine, food, chemical and pharma industry worldwide with commercial and Type1 glass quality for over 40 years. The addition of clear speciality glass to its portfolio will cater to a new customer segment. Rajesh Khosla, president and CEO of AGI glaspac, said, “The pandemic has resulted in geopolitical disengagement with certain countries. It will leave the glass industry with a huge void and a shortfall of suppliers or importers in the future. We believe that it is a huge opportunity for Indian manufacturers and start-ups for various industries to increase exports and reduce imports. It is a golden opportunity to raise the bar in the international markets for the ‘Made-in-India’ products. AGI glaspac’s entry in the new segment of manufacturing speciality glass is a strategic decision. It will allow us to cater to the much-expected rise in the global demand after the pandemic subsides.”

ncreasing population, changing lifestyles, growing economy and increasing demand for e-commerce is fueling growth of Indian packaging industry. Polymer material-based packages and bottles have marked their universal presence with intensifying consumer demands. Similar to global counterparts, Indian packaging sector too is focusing more on sustainable solutions. Adopting advanced technologies is the only way to keep pace with global competition and provide sophisticated and hygienic products. Individualization has caught the eye of consumers, giving rise to customized products. To cope with these requirements, manufacturers are trying to make manufacturing and packaging lines more efficient and agile. Industrial IoT ready applications are also making current packaging lines smarter.

Versatile track system With individualization, it becomes eminent for manufacturers to satisfy individual tastes of consumers. Manufacturing in batches was a norm in manufacturing a couple of year ago. However, there are many positives of such production lines, but it also has many downsides such as huge investments in distribution centers and inventory costs. Today, to satisfy consumer demands, most manufacturing setups are keen on achieving batch size one production runs. Moreover, consumers are willing to pay a premium for personalized product too. However, customization demand is only possible with highly automated mass production, otherwise, unit costs are too high with production not being profitable. Changing current manufacturing setups for achieving individualization could lead to huge costs and might not sound feasible. B&R’s intelligent next generation industrial transport technology is the answer to market demands for achieving mass customization cost effectively, which is a reliable, industrial-grade, hygienic transport solution for flexible production lines. Flexible batch-size-one manufacturing operations need machinery and lines, which can adapt automatically without operator intervention. Flexible packaging lines help machine builders to reduce cycle times for new product introduction and even allow batch size 1 in a continuous production. A bottle filling line must be able to detect errors in filling station and operators should be able to stop bottles being filled at the faulty station without stopping the line. The machine and line must be able to account for such errors. This intelligent next generation industrial transport technology is an ideal way to implement a motion control solution with this level of responsiveness. Unlike conventional belts with rigid timing, an intelligent transport system conveys each product individually – with variable target positions, speeds and clearances. State-of-the-art linear motor technology and independent shuttles used in B&R’s Track technology provide highly responsive transport for efficient production at any batch size.

The ultimate tool for smart machine building and systems engineering Software has become the differentiator for automation solutions. In today’s highly competitive packaging industry, shorter time to market is of prime importance to machine builders. B&Rs Automation Studio, the single tool for software development for all hardware, is the perfect fit for machine builders to reduce programming effort, the time to market, version management and improve efficiency. It helps machine builders to deliver an unprecedented array of cutting-edge features to support every stage and aspect of product development, simulation, diagnostics, commissioning and maintenance. It helps in offering high program quality, engineering costs down and shorter time to market even in the face of ever-increasing product complexity. The simulation environment supported by Automation Studio enables machine builders to develop machines even without availability of actual hardware. Automation Studio can simulate everything right down to motion components. With its integration

with MapleSim and Mathworks enables machine builders to even simulate mechanics. This has helped them to reduce costs and time due to rework and design errors. Like other B&R products, SuperTrak and ACOPOStrak too are programmed in Automation Studio. With POWERLINK, openSAFETY and OPC UA, B&R offers its customers the perfect tool to meet high demands of Industry 4.0.

More efficiency with predictive maintenance Unplanned downtime is a serious threat to manufacturing, resulting in productivity losses and excessive maintenance costs. Predictive maintenance is the answer to minimizing risks of unplanned downtime. B&R's controls satisfy these requirements of flexible and modular manufacturing plants without neglecting high demands on availability and data consistency. With existing B&R solutions, machine builders can offer energy and condition monitoring possibilities in existing control system. Its promises 24/7 monitoring so, machines and devices can be used to the maximum duration of their lifecycle and then be replaced when required. The system is capable of monitoring and calculating overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) too, which can be viewed at any time and even compared between production lines, shifts or workdays.

IT department focuses on data confidentiality and integrity whereas availability of machine and lines is a secondary concern. However, the maintenance and production department need machines and lines to be available for production with data integrity and confidentiality are of secondary importance.

B&R continues to expand its mapp Technology software framework. Functions are now available for sending automatic notifications that enable advanced maintenance concepts.

With Secure Remote Maintenance (SRM) solution, B&R perfectly balances the needs of IT and production. Diagnosis and maintenance of machinery and equipment is now easier than ever. The solution utilizes latest IT and security standards and allows for significant savings with low investment costs. SRM enables operators to have seamless secure connectivity right down to sensors and variables. Machine builders or service technicians can access machines from anywhere in the world without interfering with the IT network of the factory. The IT configures and provides access rights and only authorized personnel can access the network. This offers a perfect mix of

accessibility, security and data integrity. This solution helps minimizing downtime and maximizing OEE of machine and lines.

Smart packaging with B&R To remain competitive in era of Industrial IoT, digital transformation is the need of the hour. B&R offers complete hardware and software solutions, comprehensive service and expertise in automation and digitalization of machinery and lines. With dedicated technology and global open source communication standards such as OPC UA, POWERLINK and openSAFETY as well as the powerful Automation Studio software development environment, B&R is right partner for implementing Industrial IoT for both new and legacy equipment.z – Ninad Deshpande B&R Industrial Automation

Toppan develops new packaging for frozen storage of food

T

oppan Printing has launched a new eco-friendly packaging that better retains the quality of meat, processed seafood, and other primary products kept in frozen storage for long periods of time. Primary products, such as meat and processed seafood, are held in frozen storage warehouses because of the need for long-term storage. The quality of products deteriorates slowly under such storage conditions. For this reason, little attention has been paid to developing specialty barrier film packaging to better preserve frozen foods. Toppan’s new packaging uses GL Barrier, a barrier film developed by leveraging original vapor-deposition and coating technologies, to reduce oxidation and therefore

prevent discoloration, loss of flavor, and changes in food texture for a longer period than is possible with conventional packaging. These features reduce food loss and waste and facilitate expansion of distribution, by preserving food quality in regions without suitable infrastructure for frozen distribution. The new packaging has improved environmental performance and is available in a mono-material structure that has reduced CO2 emissions and superior recyclability. The package also allows some food products conventionally subject to ultra-low-temperature frozen storage at -50°C or lower (F4) to be stored at higher temperatures of -18°C. This change cuts storage costs by around 60%, also helping to lower CO2 emissions associated with power consumption for freezing.z
