From professional theater companies performing Shakespeare and Broadway hits to community and college groups performing all sorts of musicals and plays, there’s sure to be a live theatrical performance for everyone this summer. Seeing a play or musical live makes for a great family outing or date night, and the quality of performances in the area is sure to impress. The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey presents exciting and entertaining productions of classical works. Ariel String Quartet will perform in Princeton, July 7.
n this era of digital downloads and being able to spend hours on YouTube watching your favorite artists in concerts, it’s easy to forget the joys of live music. Princeton University Summer Chamber Concerts presents a series of free concerts at Richardson Auditorium, Alexander Hall on the Princeton University campus. The Vienna Trio will play works by Mozart, Joaqin Turina, and Camille Saint-Saens. Ariel String Quartet will play works by Tchaikovsky, Stravinsky, and Beethoven on July 7. The series will wrap up July 22 when Trio Valtorna plays works by John Harbison, Maurice Ravel and Johannes Brahms. Concerts indoors and outdoors of all styles take place in the Central Jersey Area all summer long. One of the newest venues in the area is the new stage at the Mercer County Park Festival Grounds. The grounds have long hosted concerts and other events, but the new stage has the park bringing in major touring acts, such as a July 2 show headlined by Barenaked Ladies with Violent Femmes and Colin Hay (of Men at Work) opening. The pop rock band R5 will perform on 18, and Nashville singer-songwriter Lee Brice will be there on Aug. 13. The grounds also will host a series of free concerts. Country Night with Madeline Smith is set for June 26. A Top 40 Night with Kristen & the Noise and Burnt Sienna will take place June 27, and will include fireworks On June 28, the grounds will present a concert with the Jersey Five (a Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons tribute band) and the New Jersey Capital Philharmonic Orchestra. A Motown concert with the Soul Cruisers will is set for July 11. Bruce Springsteen fans won’t want to miss a concert by Springsteen tribute band Tramps Like Us on July 25, and Rod Stewart devotees will want to check out a tribute show to him by Rick Larrimore on Aug. 8. Hopewell Borough presents a series of free concerts at the volunteer bandstand in Hopewell Borough Park, beginning with a blues concert by Paul Plumeri July 10. A Choral Concert with Jan Harrington will take place at Unitarian Universalist Church, June 27, beginning at 4 p.m. Also on June 27, will be a performance of Indian music and dance by Pradhanica at the Clark Music Center. Each summer, Tom Reock’s Reock & Roll Revue pays tribute to a classic album at Kelsey Theatre. This year, Mr. Reock and friends will honor a local legend, Ernie White, Aug. 1-2. Mr. White will join the band, which will highlight music from Mr. White’s career, including his newest CD, “Coming of Age,” which will be played in its entirety. Tickets cost $25. ancaster County, Pa., is the perfect weekend getaway destination.
