ach year Pennington Day board members, have the difficult task of selecting organizations and individuals to receive grants. In early spring, the Pennington Day website opens up to anyone interested in submitting a request for a grant. This year, we received over twenty compelling requests for grant monies. After a long process of research and discussion, 13 local organizations will be awarded a total of $6000 in grant money. From new computer systems in Pennington First Aid ambulances to new food drive bins for Boy Scouts of America Troop 44, we are thrilled to be able to contribute to each and every one of these worthy endeavors. We encourage anyone interested to submit request for grants – whether it’s your first or 31st request – again next spring! While you enjoy this annual tradition on the Main Streets of Pennington today, take a moment to appreciate that every booth you visit, every food vendor you see, has helped in making these grants possible through sponsor donations and rental fees. We are overwhelmed to have 206 vendors populating our tree lined Main Street this year! We are grateful for their presence and their contributions. We are proud of our small community and are so excited to share Pennington Day with you!

bright, colorful “tree” made by community organizations and residents of all ages. A crowd-created collage made during Pennington Day. And the ever-popular Artists Walk. The Hopewell Valley Arts Council will once again stage a showcase of local art, featuring the talents of professional and amateur artists, as well as the imagination and creativity of community members. Continuing the organization’s multiyear—and green—focus on “The Art of Upcycling,” much of the art on display will be created from discarded materials and junk. The returning “Art Walk” exhibit will once again feature a diverse array of artists and their works. Some artists will be on hand to sell their work; others will be creating art on site and sharing their creative process—and conversation—with visitors. This will be the fourth year the Arts Council will anchor the artful takeover of Howe Commons, the lawn in front of the Pennington Professional Center at 65 South Main Street in the heart of Pennington. This area will also feature musical performers throughout the day on the nearby Coffeehouse stage and a “food truck plaza” that will provide plenty of tasty and interesting food geared towards a more grown up palate. While the Pennington Day Kid Zone down the street provides plenty of lively entertainment for families and kids, Howe Commons will provide an area for attendees to hang out, listen to tunes, grab a bite to eat, visit with friends and neighbors and get their creativity on. The Hopewell Valley Arts Council will also have information on hand about their upcoming “get smART Luncheon Learn”, to be held at Princeton University’s Prospect House on June 16. This event will feature a private catered lunch in the historic and elegant home of former Princeton University presidents, followed by a choice 6

of presentations by three renowned speakers on the topics of photography, gardening and landscaping, and politics and neuroscience. Be sure to stop by the Arts Council booth at Howe Commons to learn all about it and get your tickets. For more information about the Hopewell Valley Arts Council, visit www.hvartscouncil.org.

enjoying the sounds of music floating across the square from the Coffeehouse Stage. Wander through the designated Green Street area to enjoy environmentally responsible ideas, beautiful crafts and local artists. Make your way south and visit each booth along the way. Take a moment to thank Our generous event sponsor vendors in Sponsor Row, their contributions make Pennington Day possible.  Each year, large donations ensure that the community grants are able to be distributed to worthy organizations and individuals. This year, we’d like to extend a special THANK YOU to our 2017 EVENT SPONSORS: The Pennington School, Callaway Henderson Sotheby’s International Realty, Capital Health and Princeton Foundation for Peace and Learning in US. Be sure to reference our Sponsor Boards to see all the generous companies and individuals

who made today possible! This year’s winners of the community grants will be announced from the Crossroads stage at 12:00pm From the Crossroads stage be sure to stop by the Foodcourt in front of Toll Gate before you meander down E. Curlis Avenue and find joys aplenty for children at the Kids Zone, including a giant slide, climbing wall and pony rides! Don’t forget to slip inside Toll Gate Grammar’s side doors to see the beautiful quilts on display. This year the Hopewell Valley Quilters focused on two separate themes: “Houses” and “Red, White and Blue” for Armed Forces Day. With so much to see at over 200 booths, we can’t possibly cover it all here. Take your time, enjoy the day and a stroll through our beautiful town. We are very excited to share it with you!

he Kids Zone returns this year with some exciting new additions! John Hart Farms is a family-run working farm in the heart of Hopewell Township that offers resources and information to growers at any agricultural scale—from families looking to raise a few chickens, to industrial-sized operations seeking supplies by the ton. Homage to Houses & Armed Forces Day at the Quilt Show by Nancy Breland

H

opewell Valley Quilters will showcase spectacular works of art once again at the annual Pennington Day show, from 10 am to 4 pm in the Toll Gate Grammar School cafeteria. The quilts on display are made by members and reflect a great variety of styles, from beautiful traditional patterns to contemporary works of fiber art. This year’s show will include two special exhibits. The Quilters challenged themselves to make small quilts with “Houses” as a theme. The challenge quilts incorporate this theme in creative and diverse ways. Pennington Day falls this year on Armed Forces Day. A special display of red, white and blue quilts will pay tribute to those who serve our country. Another table will feature baby quilts. Viewers will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite quilt in the show. The Viewers’ Choice Prize has been donated by Pennington Quilt Works. Admission to the show is only $1.00, and proceeds benefit Pennington Day 2017. Hopewell Valley Quilters is an informal group that has been meeting for over 30 years. The group meets both in the daytime and in the evening in the Hopewell Township branch of Mercer County Library. All are welcome. More information about the quilt group will be available at the show. Toll Gate Grammar School is located on the corner of S. Main Street and E. Curlis Avenue. Entry to the show is on the north side of the school building.

Marianne Williams, winner of the Viewers’ Choice first place ribbon in the 2016 Pennington Day Quilt Show.

M

A town’s history forever changed by the events at a school

any of you may have heard the tale of the fire that destroyed O’Hanlon Hall on a cold January night in 1980. While no one was hurt in the fire that claimed the majestic building, Pennington lost the spectacular Shaw Chapel with its huge pipe organ and beautiful stained glass windows as well as many years of administrative records and archives. Faculty members who lived in O’Hanlon apartments lost all of their belongings, and they and students housed in adjoining Old Main residence halls had to seek shelter that night with local residents. Pennington Day was created to raise money for The Pennington School after it had lost so much. The event started as a small community picnic and has since evolved into a granting organization and festival that attracts thousands to the borough 36 years after it began. FUN FACTS ABOUT THE PENNINGTON SCHOOL • The Pennington School was founded in 1838 and called the Methodist Episcopal Male Seminary at Pennington. • The cornerstone of the building now called Old Main was laid in May 1839. • It is among the 50 oldest boarding schools in the country. • The Pennington School boasts one of the oldest high school football programs in the nation. • In 1853 a coordinate department for young women was added, and the school became known as the Pennington Seminary and Female Collegiate Institute.

18

Pennington Day • May 20th, 2017

• The Female Collegiate Institute was eliminated in 1910, and the school became an all-boys institution until it became truly coeducational in 1973. • Dr. Thomas O’Hanlon holds the record for the longest tenure as head of the school (1867–1873 and 1876–1903). • Former Secretary of State and three-time Democratic presidential nominee William Jennings Bryan was the keynote speaker at the School’s 75th anniversary celebration in 1914. • Dr. Francis Harvey Green was the headmaster at Pennington from 1921 to 1943. One of his greatest legacies to the school is part of his collection of letters, manuscripts, and books signed by the authors, as well as other memorabilia. A selection of books from Dr. Green’s collection is on display at Wesley Alumni House. • The Edmund Cervone Center for Learning was founded in 1975 to help talented students with learning disabilities and became a model for other such programs across the nation • The campus has seen considerable growth since the 1980s, constructing several new buildings including the Health Center, the Campus Center, and the Kenneth Kai Tai Yen Humanities Building. The former Lowellden was completely restored and became the new Wesley Alumni House, and extensive renovations to historic Old Main, Meckler Library, and Stainton Hall are currently underway. • The Kenneth Kai Tai Yen Humanities Building has been awarded gold LEED certification.
