Welcome to Communiversity ArtsFest In honor of the Arts Council of Princeton’s 50th anniversary, this year’s big event will have a local feel By Anthony Stoeckert

On April 29, Downtown Princeton will be the site for

Communiversity ArtsFest, the free town and gown celebration offering art, live performance (on seven stages), demonstrations, food and the chance to connect with artists, merchants and food vendors at the more than 200 booths that will be set up. There also will be live performances on seven different stages. Other highlights include favorites like Nana’s Make-A-Mess Workshop, where kids create their own artwork; and the sidewalk chalk art exhibit, where artist create their works on Palmer Square’s sidewalks. More art is created at Paint Out Princeton during which artists render the action at Communiversity

ArtsFest via plein air panting. The artists’ works will be exhibited at the Arts Council of Princeton’s Paul Robeson Center for the Arts, May 5 through June 16. This year’s Communiversity ArtsFest is the 48th, dating back to when the event was originally called The People’s Party, and it’s a special one because this year marks the Arts Council of Princeton’s 50th anniversary. Anne Reeves, the founding director of the Arts Council, says the goal of Communiversity was to bring the people of Princeton and Princeton University together. “It just happened,” she says. “It seemed to me, and Continued on page 6

others, to put together the town and the gown. There were kids on campus who agreed.” For that first event, activities were set up on both sides of the campus. “It couldn’t have been more flavorful because we had both sides going and kids of all ages going back and forth on campus – little kids and older kids,” Reeves says. “It was a nice mix. It was so full of joy and it was fun for everybody to be together.” Taneshia Nash Laird, the Arts Council’s executive director, says for this year’s Communiversity ArtsFest, the committee focused on a hometown, local feel when reviewing applicants. “We wanted to be sure the majority of the participants were Princeton-based businesses,” Nash Laird says. “This can be tricky because there are so many wonderful businesses in the surrounding areas of Princeton. Just as important as ‘local,’ is the arts. We

admit to giving preferential treatment to art-related, art-focused applicants — after all, it is an arts festival. “In terms of the 50th anniversary of the Arts Council, as you can imagine, we are beaming. We are so proud of the work the organization has done to fulfill our mission of building community through the arts — and what better way to accomplish this than by hosting this town and gown event for the community?” Nash Laird was named the Arts Council’s executive director in November of 2016, which means this marks her second Communiversity ArtsFest in that position. She says she and her daughters have many memories of attending the event over the years. “So when I found myself on the Main Stage introducing Communiversity ArtsFest as the executive director of the Arts Council of Princeton, it felt surreal, and very exciting,” she says. When asked what her favorite part of Communiversity ArtsFest is, Nash Laird replies: “The art, of course. “And by art, I mean the talented visual artists, musicians and dance performers. I’m amazed at the young new talent who applied to participate this year — and so many female artists! I am excited for attendees to see the schedule of performers on the seven stages throughout Communiversity.” New this year are some different – and free – art activities for kids on the Palmer Square Green and in front of the Paul Robeson Center for the Arts. “I’m excited about a new sponsor this year, Chopt Creative Salad Co.,” Nash Laird says. “They are relatively new to Princeton and will be serving fresh salads. This year, we partnered with nonprofit Sustainable Princeton to support their efforts in reducing the carbon footprint of Communiversity. Attendees can recycle, compost food waste and refill water bottles at their Resource Recovery Tents located on the map.” Jeniah “Kookie” Johnson is an officer on the Arts Council of Princeton’s board of trustees. Boy have we seen growth since then! Our Board and staff raised $10 million for the beautiful new and improved arts center; greatly increased our programming — including programs for at-risk populations; opened what has become an award-winning exhibition space; and Communiversity ArtsFest attracts more than 40,000 art enthusiasts to doubled our operating budget.” Downtown Princeton. Communiversity ArtsFest, so Johnson reminds people that they should be sure to experience the art that can be found everywhere during the big day. “The music and dance and other performing arts [on seven stages] are amazing,” Johnson says. “Exhibits, such as chalk drawing, keep getting better every year, and there are many arts activities for kids. The university students are pretty creative with their endeavors on the Nassau Hall Green, as well. Much of the food is artisanal — Mediterra’s paella and Nomad pizza come to mind. Art is everywhere. It’s what sets Communiversity apart from other festivals and makes it so special. The town gown collaboration also makes it special. Ceramic demonstrations by the Arts Council of Princeton are a favorite activity at Communiversity ArtsFest By Philip Sean Curran

Communiversity ArtsFest is a chance to experience all

things Princeton, from the smell of the food and the sound of the music to the imagery of the arts. Kathleen Preziosi, manager of the ceramics department at the Arts Council of Princeton, helps to give the public a taste of what it can experience during the year at the Arts Council. Her department will be on hand during the day for demonstrations, setting up shop at the corner outside the Arts Council’s Paul Robeson Center for the Arts, 102 Witherspoon St., Princeton. “We have demos on the [potter’s] wheel,” Preziosi says. “So we have artists and teachers giving demos on the

18

wheel for people coming by who are interested.” She says spectators love to watch the clay “go up and down and transform into different shapes and sizes.” In addition to the potter’s wheel demonstration, Preziosi says there will be an art project for youth — a chance, in her words, for them “to dabble and get their hands dirty and try different things in clay.” There also will be information given out to invite people to the annual “Soul-Filled Bowls” fundraiser in December to support Meals on Wheels and the Mercer Street Friends. As part of the demonstrations, bowls will be made and sold later in the year for the fundraiser. Continued on page 21

Preziosi is a familiar face at the Arts Council, having worked there for 25 years. An artist herself, she does ceramics sculpture. Through the year, the ceramics department offers classes for adults and teens, from beginner to intermediate levels. There are even classes for children starting when they are 5 years old.

people who are “dabbling” to try something new. “And then we get people that actually try something that’s new that they want to continue; and they enjoy the social aspect of the classroom,” she says. “It’s just a variety,” Preziosi says. “And we have people that are artists that have flourished over the years and that possibly want to start their own studio or start working at home — building on what they learn here.” When school is out, there are summer camps for teenagers and children, she said. “But we have a huge amount of interest with students coming from the elementary age,” she says. “And we try to continue that through with figurative sculpture — giving kids the opportunity to try different things that they might not get in school.” She said there are about seven to nine teachers for the classes. “Most of them are artists . . . some are art educators,” she said. To learn more, go to the Arts Council’s web site, www. artscouncilofprinceton.org

Visitors at the Arts Council of Princeton’s ceramics station can get their hands dirty and create some art during Communiversity Arts Fest.

“They do change in titles sometimes,” Preziosi says of the classes. “But it’s basically your arts education of ceramic and sculpture.” For adult classes, there are about nine to 12 students, she says. Classes are offered on different days of the week, on a semester basis. “We probably have 73 artists using the studio in a given week, which is a lot of people,” she says. COMMUNIVERSITYartsfest The Kids Are All Right

Young musicians will be sharing their sounds during Communiversity ArtsFest By Anthony Stoeckert

Live entertainment is one of the hallmarks of Communiversity ArtsFest, and some of the best music is made by young musicians and performers. Taking place April 29, 1-6 p.m. in Downtown Princeton, Communiversity ArtsFest offers non-stop live entertainment on seven different stages. For young musicians, the event gives them a chance to share their music in front of a big crowd.

“It’s a great experience because so many people come out throughout the day and you get to see so many other performers, as well,” says Shrayva Nandyala, who performs with her sister, Easha, as Easha & Shrayva. The two students at Princeton High School write songs and also play some cover songs. When asked if playing at a big event like Communiversity ArtsFest is intimidating, Shrayva says she and

her sister have played similar venues. “We also play a lot of other gigs outside, in Philly and New York, which are equally big so I don’t think the nerves are as big of a deal,” she says. “But it’s always such a blast to come and play in Princeton, our hometown.” They started learning about music when they were around 3 and 4, starting with the Indian classical music their mother listened to. “I got really into Western music, so at the age of 13, I started writing my own songs,” Easha says. “It was kind of a natural progression that Shrayva was also interested in music, so we started playing it together and collaborating. I think it’s just a lot more fun to have two people on stage and to have that energy with somebody that you know.” Their knack for putting their own style to cover songs led to their arrangement of “City of Stars,” from the movie “La La Land,” winning a contest sponsored Sisters Easha and Shrayva Nandyala are a musical duo who will return to Communiversity ArtsFest.

by Lions Gate films. They made the cover as a tribute to Damien Chazelle, the director of “La La Land,” who grew up in Princeton. Also performing at Communiversity ArtsFest is the band Just 6 Hours whose members include singer-guitarist Seth Barnett, of Princeton Junction, and bassist Gordon Sine, of Plainsboro. Just 6 Hours came together after Barnett and Sine were in a band. After some members of that band left, Barnett and Sine formed a new group with guitarist Nick Marrotta, of Oceanport, and drummer Anthony Giordano, of Long Branch, who they met at Lakehouse Music Academy in Asbury Park. “We had a show that we had to play and we had about just six hours to practice and get ready for the show, so that’s where the name came from,” Barnett says. The alternative rock group plays original songs. Sometimes Barnett writes lyrics and brings his words and some chords to the group to flesh out into a song,

and other times the group writes music first and then Barnett writes lyrics. Just 6 Hours’ music is available on various streaming services. It’s most recent work is an EP, titled “Sober,” released in March. “I feel like sobriety is something we all try to achieve in our lives,” Barnett says of why the band made an EP about that theme. “A lot of people view sobriety as you’re addicted to something and sober means you’re getting off something, like drugs. But a lot of it is your own personal health, trying to stay sober and clean, and trying to promote your healthy self.” Three of the songs on “Sobriety” are about friends of Barnett’s who died from their addiction. “It’s definitely therapeutic,” Barnett says of writing about such personal and painful experiences. “You sit down and say, ‘How can I get this off my chest?’ It was very enlightening doing that because I saw parts of myself and I could help myself through them passing away. It definitely helps, but it was a little big difficult because I didn’t want to mess it up and say the wrong thing.” Making her Communiversity ArtsFest debut is 13-year-old Lara K. LEK of East Windsor. “I started playing music when I was in kindergarten, so about 10 years ago,” says Lara, who began taking voice lessons when she was in pre-school, then started taking piano lessons shortly after. She also plays clarinet in her school band. “I have an interest in folk music and pop and a little bit from Elton John.” There’s one particular John song that holds a special meaning for her family. “Elton John’s song ‘Your Song’ was my parents’ wedding song, and they always play it and other Elton John songs, so I enjoy it,” she says. She has previously played at area venues, including Cafe Improv, the Arts Council of Princeton’s open mic nights. During her set at Communiversity ArtsFest, Lara plans on playing music by Birdy, The Veronicas, Carole King and, of course, Elton John. Making Communiversity ArtsFest More Eco-Friendly Sustainable Princeton is finding ways to reduce the event’s carbon footprint By Anthony Stoeckert

Sustainable Princeton staff and volunteers will be stationed at three Resource Recovery tents during Communiversity ArtsFest.

Communiversity ArtsFest is a big event that draws people

from near and far viewing art, listening to music, creating art and eating lots of food. All of that makes for fun and excitement, but it also creates a lot of waste, and this year Sustainable Princeton is joining forces with the Arts Council of Princeton and Princeton University to introduce some new practices designed to make the event more environmentally friendly. Molly Jones, executive director of Sustainable Princeton says the group started talking with the Arts Council about measures that could be taken to reduce Communiversity centraljersey.com

ArtsFest’s impact on the environment. One step being taken is to improve recycling during Communiversity ArtsFest at “recovery stations,” orange tents where trash can be collected. The tents – sponsored by Sustainable Princeton and the Princeton University Office of Sustainability – will be located on Palmer Square Green, Hulfish and Witherspoon streets and in front of Nassau Hall. “There will be people there helping people understand what goes in the recycling, what goes in the trash,” Jones Continued on page 28

We’re looking forward to having a personal oneon-one interaction to educate them on that.” Sustainable Princeton also will conduct an organic waste audit during Communiversity, working with the municipality of Princeton. “In discussing with them, no one is quite certain where most of the food waste happens at the event,” Jones says. “Does it happen from the food vendors in the kitchen in Continued on page 38

their food truck, or is more food waste coming from attendees at the event? What we’re going to be doing is working with a Princeton University student who is leading the effort, who is designing kind of a study for that day, to figure out where the waste is coming from so that in future years — as we try to get food waste where it should be going, not to the landfill —we’ll know a little bit more of the source so that we create informed structure to support the removal of the food waste.” Another step is placing refillable water stations at the orange tents, and at five of the event’s performance stages: Palmer Square, Witherspoon and Nassau streets, Chambers Street, Washington Street near the Princeton Garden Theatre, and Robeson and Witherspoon streets. The contest is open to artists who create works made of recyclable and sustainable materials, or which is in the theme of sustainability. “The contest is open to everyone, basically, on the planet,” says Laurel Cantor of Princeton University, which organizes the event. “But word doesn’t get that far usually, although I did receive an inquiry from somebody in Australia last year.” But because the rules for the contest require artists to carry their work in and out of the contest, that artist from Australia didn’t enter. “People use whatever they want to; they don’t have to use recycled materials, although you get extra points if you do,” Cantor says. “So if you give us something to display and you give us a list of what you used to make it, then the judges

take that into consideration when they’re awarding prizes.” Those prizes include a $500 cash award for the top winner. There are categories for various ages: pre-school, elementary school, middle school and high school students, artists older than 18, and a then a prize for groups, such as an art class. Cantor says it’s a lot of fun to see these works of art on display. “It’s extremely gratifying to see the level of intellect that people sometimes put into these pieces of art,” she says. “I get there very, very early to start setting up the tables and putting table clothes out so that when people come, they basically choose a place to display their piece. “ And when stopping by to look at the art, visitors also can make their own creations. A table will be set up so that people can make “trash art hats” out of paper plates, newspapers and leftover ribbons – even Christmas decorations. “It’s meant to be a place where people can come and see what can happen with refuse and talk over what the university is doing,” Cantor says. “It’s definitely a fun and feel-good activity.”

During Communiversity ArtsFest, visitors can look at “Trash Art” and even make their own creations.

summer Night’s Dream”), drawing, modern art, comic illustration and lettering, and much more. Also available are before - and aftercare. Kids ages 5 to 9 can explore programs under the theme “Meet the Masters,” with each week focusing on a subject inspired by an area museum. For example, Erin Armington, the Arts Council’s education manager, says one new program this year is “Art of Sports,” which will take place at Morven, coinciding with a baseball exhibit the museum will be hosting. Morven also will be the site for Art and Nature camps. Camps for kids 10 and older are split by age: 10 to 12 and 13 to 16, and older kids can focus on one area of the arts if they want. “The younger students have multimedia projects — they’re doing clay, they’re doing drawing, they’re getting a sampling of art because they’re still learning about art Continued on page 53

and what it is,” Armington says. “When they get a little older, they need to be a little more specialized; they get more academic lessons.” Maria Evans, the Arts Council’s artistic director, says the concept is for younger kids to sample various art disciplines and try various materials. As they get older, they get to focus more on their area of interest. “Kids don’t get a lot of a dedicated medium in school,” Evans says. “I know a lot of students will come here to take our clay classes because they love ceramics and they don’t get a lot of it in school. They get some of it, but say an 11- or 12-year-old wants to start exploring clay more, then they can do it.” Camp registration is weekly, which allows for flexFor example, a child who is interested in photograibility. digital art media. One favorite day for photography lovers is when SAVE animal shelter for homeless pets brings dogs for campers to photograph. “SAVE will bring their dogs here – the dogs that are up for adoption – and the students use them as their model,” Evans says. “So it’s great for the dogs to get out and about. It’s good exposure for them and the students get to learn how to take portrait photography.” Also available are intensive camps, where students focus on one area of the arts, such as filmmaking or ceramics, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. “It’s more specialized and they can get way more in depth, focusing on it for at least three hours every day for the whole week,” Armington says. Among the camp’s most popular camps is one devoted to Claymation filmmaking. Continued on page 60
